Sofia is a city with 7000 years of history. In the 8th century BC, a Thracian settlement was formed on the territory of present-day Sofia. The Thracian tribe "Serdi" named their settlement Serdika. This territory was attracted by its mineral springs, the water of which can be used to this day in the center of Sofia.
In 29 A.D., the city was conquered by the Romans and became the center of an administrative region. The city was named Sredets, meaning "middle, center", as it is believed to be located in the center of the Balkan Peninsula. Later, when the city was captured by the Byzantines, the city was again given a new name, Tiaditsa, which means "among the mountains". After liberation from Byzantine rule, the name of the city became Sofia. The church of "St. Sophia", not far from the Cathedral of "St. Al. Nevsky" gave the present name to the capital. During this period, the city grew, became a center of crafts and trade. Many buildings and churches were built, the most famous of which is the Boyan Church.
The image of Sofia is constantly changing. Today Sofia is a major industrial center of the country, where most of the production and population is concentrated. New stores, restaurants and hotels are being built, offices of private companies are being opened, subways are being built, and cultural and historical monuments are gradually being restored. In Sofia one can see buildings of different styles, for example, buildings in urban, Stalinist style - the Party House, the Balkan Hotel (now Sheraton), TSUM (now transformed).
