My favorite story aspect of any of the prequels is Anakin sensing that his mother is in pain across the universe. He uses this to his benefit in Empire Strikes Back when he tortures Han & Leia just because he knows Luke will sense it and come for them. Remember after being tortured Han says “they didn’t even ask me any questions”. The point was just to put him in pain so Luke would sense it. It’s one of the few things that directly connects Anakin in the prequels with Vader in the original trilogy.
I don't think you need to explain. She is pretending not to know. In her final commentary on Return of the Jedi she said she knew the Emperor's name is Palpatine. So she knows exactly who the sith lord is, but is just pretending. What else is she pretending about.
Interestingly enough, there were a lot of cut scenes from this movie, mostly involving Anakin and Padme's romance, many of which were actually not creepy, including a couple of scenes where we get to meet Padme's family. There was another unrelated scene, where we learn about Count Dooku from the Jedi Librarian as well.
It's weird but I never viewed the romance as 'creepy'. I've often compared it to Empire and don't really see much difference if I'm being honest. There's an argument that Empire's romance falls into the 'ambiguous consent' trope which is the same with this film :)
@@onemoreminute0543 I'd even go as far as to say that AotC's romance is less problematic than Empire's. Because while Anakin and Han are similarly pushy, there's just a lot more mutually discussed consent in Anakin and Padmé's relationship. She decided over the kiss, she established boundaries which Anakin proceeded to respect until it was ultimately her who accepted his advances, which he had pretty much given up at that point, and initiated the relationship. The lines with Han and Leia were a lot more blurred and loose, which ultimately was okay since they obviously both wanted each other eventually but it's still weird how the much more clearly consentual relationship is painted as the creepy one.
@@znk0r Padmé was canonically 14 years old when she hung out with 9 year old Anakin for like a weekend or so. Then, after not seeing each other for a decade, they fell in love when he was 19 and she was 24. Comparatively, Han Solo was 29 years old when he first met 19 year old Leia in A New Hope. Once again, the OT is honestly sketchier than the PT here.
Yes, it was certainly Lucas' intention to make it a beautiful love story. And it certainly does come from an old school Boomer kinda male-centric POV that comes off as creepy now. I keep thinking of the "I HATE THEM" scene and my mind always wanders to "and this is turning Padme on?? The confession of an unstable murderer and she's like thinking this is the man of her dreams??" But the scene is intended to be "look at this tortured soul, and only true love from a righteous woman can keep him on the right path". There's no thought of the woman's POV and how like 5 minutes later she's confessing her love. It's VERY male-centric. I think that's one big reason why I appreciate the prequels so much more after seeing The Clone Wars. They were able to flesh out the Anakin story so much more. You're able to see how tender their love was, how his relationship with Obi was a very strong one, etc (without giving away spoilers)
The Clone Wars animated show makes these prequel movies even better. Much more Anakin and obi wan, Padme, clones with personalities, filling gaps between episode 2 and 3, it has it all
So true. Much more fleshing out of Anakin, Padme, Obi-Wan and others. It's a bit non sensical in the movies as they are. I mean it's there but the bare bones. When you see The Clone Wars it makes so much more sense.
I never understood why people mock this line - I mean he grew up on Tatooine as a slave. He probably really would hate sand. The fact that people complain about this line is equal to him complaining about sand.
The novelization has Padme falling for Anakin because of his blunt honesty. She's been and worked with politicians her whole life and they always say one thing but mean other things. When he said that line she realized he was not just saying what he thinks she wants to hear.
The Clone Wars animated series covers the 5 year period between this movie and the next. Anakin is much more likeable and it really shows his and Obi Wan's friendship.
Clone Wars only lasted for three years from 22 BBY to 19 BBY. The Clone Wars show starts in 22 BBY a few months or weeks after Attack of the Clones enough time for Anakin to be Knighted and Ahsoka to be set up for Anakin. Clone Wars then ends in 19 BBY connecting to the events of Revenge of the Sith.

The only issue is that this was the first big-budget film shot fully digitally so because it was brand new technology not all the compositing works as well as it could be. But I find that forgivable for that reason - the firsts don't always age well but it opens the door.

Each one of the prequels has more practical effects, miniatures etc. than the entire original trilogy combined. In fact most of the time people complain about bad CGI, it's not even CGI, it's a physical set.

Yeah. The scenes with Anakin and Padme were filmed in much more natural locations to give off an organic aesthetic to the romance. Meanwhile, the scenes with Obi-Wan take place in more digital and sterile locations to give off the an artificial aspect to the mystery :)
One of the hardest things to animate using computers is eating with mouth open: this scene looks odd as the interaction between teeth and food as it's bitten is still challenging. "Alita: Battle Angel" also had a couple of scenes when Alita ate, but they played it safe by getting her to bite off a mouthful with lips closed, thus bypassing the problem, even though the computer technology was miles ahead of this movie.

I love Attack of the Clones. It's such a wild and untamed, genre-bending space opera ride that mixes an enticing neo-noir cyberpunk mystery investigation with a highly theatrical romance plot and bombastic war story spectacle, all set in space and with wizards. Who else does that? Glorious. I like how you're one of the few people who understand from the get go that Anakin is a _necessarily_ troubled young man who _needs_ to be a flawed and estranged outcast to eventually become the monster he is bound to be and that a character being flawed doesn't automatically make them a "flawed character", if you catch my drift. These characters aren't perfect plastic figures. They're not saints. Anakin is an estranged boy who, after leaving his loving mother as a young child, desperately craves the lacking approval of the stoic monk order he joined and in turn obsessively clings to the little love and emotional support he has in his life, be it from chancellor Palpatine, his mother or his now-wife Padmé. Obi Wan struggles to fill Qui-Gon's shoes as a paternal mentor to the boy, instead falling into the role of a bickering brother, an equal, and overcompensating with excessive strictness that only further drives Anakin away from him. Padmé is a young woman who has been wrapped up in a duty bigger than herself for all her life. Now she meets someone who is utterly enamored with her in her truest form, who has idolized her not as a powerful queen or a senator but a mere handmaiden, a person. There's hardly anyone with whom she can just be herself as much as with Anakin. And so she decides to be selfish for the first time in her life and embraces this problematic, forbidden romance. I just love how flawed they all are. Especially as an antithetical mirror to the almost fairy tale-esque, inherently heroic trio of the OT. There's a reason why only one of these narrative halves ends happily while the other one is headed for tragedy. Let's just say that Lucas didn't hold back with Episode III and there's a reason why even the mainstream likes that one. These two prior episodes were some heavy but necessary setup work. Now it's time for payoff.
It actually annoyed me when Yoda was condescending to Obi about his "lost" planet. Obi DID come to the conclusion of the records being wrong at the library but the arrogance of the librarian saying "oh well that's impossible for our records to be wrong" is the only reason why he wanted to reaffirm it with Yoda.
None of the problems are what you’re describing. It’s just poorly directed, which leads to wooden acting performances, and has clunky dialogue. We know Lucas can come up with a good story. But he needs someone else to write the final script and direct the actors to produce an Ep.V level of film.
It was twenty years ago this summer. I took a girl I met in an AOL chat room to see this movie as a date. Today we're married with two kids, both named after Star Wars characters!
A few years ago I watched a little boy watch Star Wars with his dad for the first time and when Anakin said, “I hate them!” The boy said, “He hates himself.” That was when I finally saw it. For some reason I divorced Anakin from episode 1 and Anakin from episode 2. Padme doesn’t. She sees that he was a good little boy and he’s being broken by the Jedi because they don’t want him to feel anything and being strong with the force, I think he feels everything. She says “To be angry is to be human.” He needs therapy and I think she might be doing the “I can fix him” nonsense. I can’t quite see the romance but maybe with more focused dialogue I might have bought it more. The score helps, it’s beautiful and really sets the dramatic love story tone.
The novelization of both Episode 2 and 3 portrays Anakin's and Padme's romance a lot better than the film version do. I was able to read both books prior to the movie releases and the movies leave out a ton of character and relationship building that earlier drafts the novel writers utilized.
I think at first the love story is difficult to comprehend but thinking about it, it’s only a 5 year age gap, they were both young in phantom menace although it seems as if anakin was 5 and padme was 15 he was 9/10 ish and she was 15. Obviously they’re older in the second episode 10 years have past, anakin had a childish crush on her but padme always thought of him as a little boy. He tries proving to her the whole movie that he’s not just “a little boy” I think eventually she sees that and slowly falls in love with him throughout that movie overall she’s not that much older than him but as for like him acting kind of “creepy” anakin being anakin I don’t think he’s good at communicating his feelings which was pretty much the whole reason he turned to the dark side. All he needed was help with his feelings. And in episode 3 obviously them being married and such and such is just them getting older so if you think about it it’s not that weird. I also recommend watching Star Wars theory’s videos called “padme reveals how she fell for anakin when he was only 9” it explains it more in depth but overall I think the love story is difficult to read into if you only see one layer of it.
When this movie came out, I had hard times trying to explain people to look beyond the cheesiness of some scenes and realize the contrast between an ideallic picnic and a young guy telling his love crush he does not mind a dictatorship as long as it works. Then Episode III came and it is still my favorite today, with its shakespearian tragedy feel and Anakin’s faustian pact…
If you want to see more of Obi Wan and Ani’s relationship and their fall check out the animated series The Clone Wars. It’s amazing and it introduced Ahsoka Tano who in my opinion is the truest Jedi in the story (next to Obi Wan)
Obi-wan and Ahsoka are specifically not the truest Jedi in the story, that's kind of the point. They're both very emotional characters, obviously not to the level of Anakin, but still not the Jedi ideal. You are equating Jedi with righteous or morally good, but the Jedi are not defacto good.

My advice is skip the Clone Wars. Animation is poor, voice acting is laughable too. Prequel apologists will rave about this show, but they're the same ones who defend Jar Jar and all the embarrassing performances throughout the prequels.

sounds like you missed that, when the baddy was saying "if they find what we're planning to build we're done for" they show him handing over the plans to the death star, with a projected cg model of the death star to drive the point home, to Dooku who says he will take the plans to his master.

Didn't we already have...? (looks something up) Oh, guess not. Knights of the Old Republic came out the year after Attack of the Clones. I thought it was older. But yeah, whole big thing in that game about different disciplines within the Jedi order and (even though you were free to pick whatever color you wanted regardless of any other choices you made) certain lightsaber color associations for each of them as well as the Sith. It's been a long time since I read any of them, but did none of the expanded universe books that existed before the prequel movies ever try to touch on any of this at all? At no point during all the books after Luke's Jedi Academy was established?

Samuel L. Jackson did not need a purple light saber to stand out, just look for the guy running awkwardly with his light saber and the guy who poses for 5 minutes in the most cringeworthy way after he cuts off Jango Fett's head.

I may be mistaken, but I think there might've been a Star Wars tabletop RPG that predates Attack Of The Clones which includes a myriad of lightsaber colors.
The issue Anakin and Obi-Wan have at this point is that while Obi-Wan looks towards Anakin like a younger brother, Anakin looks towards Obi-Wan as a father figure, similar to how he felt about Qui-Gon. The two don't know how to talk to each other well.
And the REAL real issue is that no time was devoted to developing their relationship; the first time we see them, they're at complete odds, contrary to the warm words Old Ben uses to describe Ani in Ep4 (the elevator scene was tacked on last-minute in an attempted band-aid).
I know we've all heard this, but I'll hijack this comment in the hopes that Shanelle sees it: The song during the Maul fight where Qui Gon dies is called "Duel of the Fates." This is - in part - because the outcome of that fight determines the path that Anakin will go down. If Obi Wan - who thinks of him as a brother - trains him, Anakin won't quite embrace the Jedi teaching as well as he should and constantly power struggle and be consumed with aspiration and fear. If Qui-Gon trains him, then Anakin will have the father figure he never had who will teach him like a father and impress upon Anakin a more nuanced view of Jedi teachings that has room for emotions and attachments and can teach him how to manage those feelings
“So he’s like, 19.” Pretty spot on there. The time gap between Episodes I and II is around 10 years. The time gap between Episodes II and III is around 3 years. I can’t remember exactly how old Anakin was in The Phantom Menace, but it was somewhere around 8-11 years of age. There are comic books/graphic novels that talk about how Anakin was treated while a Padawan at the Jedi Temple (spoiler: he was not treated well at all, since he was much older than the other Jedi younglings when he took up residence at the Temple). Anakin was already a very strong duelist by the time of Attack of the Clones, but during the Clone Wars he got even better still - he just happened to exist at the same time as Dooku, who uses Lightsaber Combat Form II, and is canonically the best practitioner of that style in all of Star Wars history - that’s why Dooku is able to best Anakin at the end of this film.
When Leia says that Obi Wan served her father in the clone wars, she means Bail Organa, her adopted father. At that point no one (but Lucas) knew who her real father was.

We shouldn't have to watch any ancillary stuff to fill a gap which the original movie had plenty of potential to fill, and then didn't. Don't excuse incompetence with "Oh well, this inferior product over there might help". Not gonna wash with me.
While others criticize Anakin's flirting with Padme, it never bothered me. Anakin's spent the past decade with monks disconnected from basic emotions, and Padme has to be professional 24/7 because of her senate position. Actual flirting is foreign to them, so they just say whatever comes to mind, even if it isn't coherent.
Yeah, but there is zero chemistry between them. If the script and/or Hayden Christensen would have managed to portrait Anakin as a scary and arrogant yet at the same time confident and charming young man (the quintessential bad boy) the audience would understand much better why Padme falls for him. instead he comes off as awkward, creepy and bitchy. Not really qualities girls usually fall for. I'm not sure who is more at fault here - the writers or Christensen, my guess would be the writers.
@@dennispanko6311 Its a combination of 25 percent writing and 75 direction. The writing needs nudging, the direction is absolutely wack. When decent actors give bad performances, it is almost always the directors fault.
Problem is this total awkwardness has to work because original trilogy happened. If it had started like this and was given room to breathe and develop, it could've been something, but had to rush things because you got only three movies.
Jedi are not disconnected from emotion that is a misconception. All they teach is to be mindful of emotions and not to get possessive of personal relationships.

"Star Wars: The Clone Wars" the animated series takes place between the end of this movie and the beginning of "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge Of The Sith" and follows the adventures of Obi-Wan and Anakin.
Actually, it follows the story of the war itself and MANY of the characters involved in it, the Clones themselves often getting much more focus, even when characters like Obi-wan and Anakin are present.
@@KorAsek453 it does not follow the war itself. its an anthology giveing us glimses of the war. mostly Obi-wan and Anakin but occasionally other charachters. george lucas at the time it was first aired also said its supposed to be a biased, warped perspective of the war and deliberately inaccurate hence the propaganda-style intros. (which is why pre-Disney it was considered 2ndary canon, because its supposed to be an inaccurate portrayal of the war)

The strong focus on the Jedi characters was really only in the early seasons, the series as a whole gives much more varied perspectives, with several episodes even being done entirely from the Separatist point of view. Also, I don't really care what Lucas said it was SUPPOSED to be when it first aired, I'm talking about what it WAS. Besides, the show was run more by Filoni than Lucas anyway.
When I saw this years ago, you could literally feel the whole theater squirm in discomfort at the Anakin/Padme sexytime dialogue. The thing that broke the tension was some dude bursting out laughing hysterically.

The most times I’ve ever seen a movie in theaters was 6, and this was that movie. I don’t know why I was so obsessed with this one in particular. I originally planned on breaking my record for episode III, but only managed to see it twice.
I saw this one 6 times in theaters too. I saw Revenge of the Sith I think 3 or 4 times in theaters. But...I saw Phantom Menace 19 times in theaters! I can't imagine I would ever do that again for any movie, LOL.
The "executed by space monsters in an arena/gladiatorial pit" scene is an homage to Edger Rice Burroughs' 1912 novel "Princess of Mars", first in his Barsoom series. Disney made a pretty good film of it in 2012 under the title "John Carter".
I think a lot of the relationship between Obi-Wan and Anakin gets a lot more development in The Clone Wars TV series. If I remember correctly, the Syfo Dias mystery is basically Dooku posing as Syfo Dias and ordering the clones.
According to Wookieepedia, it was Sifo-Dyas himself who ordered the clones. But this is a very muddy point in the movies that isn't really clarified or explained, or even given a reason as to why we should even care.
@@MrSupertallblackman I mean 2003 also depicted an overexaggerated view on the Jedi and the Clone Wars so both shows kind of do their own thing compared to the films. In terms of tone The Clone Wars 2008 to 2019 is alot closer.
Basically, in the original concept, Sifo Dyas was either Dooku or Sidious using a different name. But in legends they make it where Sifo Dyas pre-emptively ordered the clones because of the return of the Sith(maul). The clones were never made to fight droids, they were made to fight Sith. Then, it was canonized with the clone wars TV show.
Coming from the generation that actually watched the originals in theaters and growing up waiting for this prequal series... I do not understand the negative reviews. We got some more Star Wars and was able to relieve our youth a little through them.
as a 96 kid I agree with you, but people will use that same defense for 7-9 and those from my view were trash. So you have to bring some decent arguments to justify the films and see the weaknesses too.
As someone who grew up in the generation that watched the originals I'll tell you the reason for the negative reviews. The movie is trash top to bottom. I refer you to Red Letter Media's critique for a fully fleshed out analysis of said trash.
Best use of imperial march in a Star Wars movie is the ending of Attack of the Clones. And the way how it flows into the Anakin/Padme love theme is one of John Williams' finest work.
People can say what they want about the Anakin/Padme romance...but their love theme, "Across the Stars" is one of the most beautiful film scores I've ever heard.
The dialogue is rough but I adore how they really focused on building and showing the world/ universe. This movie sets up A LOT and is necessary for the next movie, which I personally think is the best Star Wars movie there is
the worst thing for me about these movies is... the cinematography!walks into frame and then stands like chess pieces facing each other, giving very wooden dialogue, also too much cgi!
I like the movie. BUT I suppose they had to rush Anikan's decent to the dark side... I actually feel sorry for the actor.... Hayden Christensen... they gave him crap dialog that he had to say...
I agree. Love or hate (or in between) the prequels, the world building in the prequels is great. I’m not the biggest prequel fan, but aside from the dialogue, for me, the rest was pretty good.
After you watch Revenge of the Sith you should definitely watch the shows, Clone Wars, Bad Batch, Rebels, The Manadlorian and Book of Boba Fett. They all do so much to flesh out the story and the world building.
One of the things I love about the Clone Wars is see how the Empire's military weapons equipment and weapons evolved directly from the Clone equipment shown in the prequels. There are earlier models of X-Wings, AT-ATs, Star Destroyers, Storm Trooper Armor, A-Wings, and so much more. It gives a sense of time between the OT and the prequels.
Hey, just wanted to point out the volume seems a little low. People can always lower their volume i video is too loud, but some can only turn up the volume so much on a video with already low audio. Better too loud than too soft.
Agreed... I've always wondered why pro reactors have such a hard time dialing in their audio settings. She's been doing it long enough that you'd think she would know where to set the gain/input volume (or mic position) so that it is consistent across videos. Even worse to me is when a reactor has the movie audio at a much lower volume than their mic audio, so that you go deaf every time they speak. Shanelle has not typically had this issue, but others don't seem to have a clue how to mix their feeds.

Great reaction. I love that shot of Padme’s and Anakin’s shadow on Tatooine- his Jedi mullet really forms Darth Vader’s helmet! Also there are a few cameos in the club scene ie the actors that play C3PO and Jar-Jar are shown in close up!
I really, really hope you continue to have the same attitude as with these as far as what you see/hear online and watch the sequels and standalone movies as well. As someone who grew up in the 90s but was still an OT fan, I love both the prequels and the sequels because I just love Star Wars. Are there things I don't care for? Sure, but that's true even for the originals. It's so much easier to enjoy what's given instead of being upset it's not what you would have written. Also, best part of this movie is that Obi-Wan spends most of it just basically participating in a Scooby-Doo episode lol
While I don't care about the sequels, I was a prequel kid so I'm npt going to hate them or their fans. Not goibg to do the same crap older fans did to me growing up, constantly telling me the movies I loved were crap and that I was a "fake fan". I'm glad theres enough content for everyone and we can all love star wars in different ways.
The problem with the sequels is not that they "did things I don't want them to do." This is a gaslighting/denial/deflection of what the REAL criticisms are. And that is how badly written those fins are, how much they break Star Wars lore, AND how much they disrespect snd make pointless the previous six. The prayers for their faults....do not make the OT pointless, and for any of their writing issues, the basic plot is still fantastic. The sequels don't have good plots, good writing, AND they destroy fan favorite characters.
I always loved Episode II because of the darker storytelling. The introduction of the Clones never felt fully paid-off to me, and even in Episode III there was very little...attachment to them. It always felt weird. Then Lucas made the Clone Wars animated series, which was PHENOMENAL. Now I can watch Episode II and III and I have that attachment to the Clones that I (personally) needed. Episode III: Revenge of the Sith is my favorite Star Wars movie. Most may disagree, but I just LOVE IT. It's so dark.
This is why episode 2 should have been episode 1. And in between this and episode 3 should have been the actual clone wars paying off, the clones, Anakins relationship with Obi Wan, his relationship with Padme. Introduce some of the reasons he starts to distrust the Jedi council. You know, basically the clone wars series stuff.

@@PheelKooL disagree. I think you still could have had clone wars. The movie wouldn't have covered all of it. And the main stories that were so good involving maul and savage, the mandolorian stories, cad bane, the mortis arc would still be told i. The series.
That's why they already made the Clone Wars (2003) cartoons before Episode III came out. Sadly no one has seen them or remembers, these cartoons (or the 2007 CGI series) make Episode III perhaps the best of the bunch.

Also, the guy who offers Obi-wan death-sticks was Matt Doran aka Mouse from 'The Matrix'. - 14:04 - That is Temura Morrison as Jango Fett. He is now on Disney+ playing Boba Fett in 'The Book of Boba Fett'. He also plays all of the clones in Episode III (not really a spoiler...they are clones of Jango). He also plays Jason Momoa's father, Thomas Curry in 'Aquaman'. He is a New Zealand actor, and I think he is Maori. - 15:57 - There is no comprehensive Obi-wan origin story. Most of what is known of his backstory as a Padawan comes from the 'Legends' canon, and not from Disney's 'Official Canon'. After Disney purchased LucasFilm, a lot of the canon stories written in books, comics, and video games were classed as 'Legends', that is Disney was not honoring the work of many authors, artists, and designers prior to the LucasFilm sale. Disney has been slowly confirming some 'Legends' characters as canon (Revan from the 'Star Wars: The Old Republic' era, as well as Darth Bane from the same era who created The Rule of Two for the Sith). However, Ewan MacGregor has been filming the 'Obi-wan Kenobi' series for Disney+ which will deal with the years between Episodes III & IV. Also, the animated series 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars' tells what happens between Episodes II & III...and A LOT happens, along with a lot of backstories for Obi-wan (including a lost love), Anakin (he has a Padawan who is the most incredible female character in all of 'Star Wars'...even better than Leia, and that is saying something!!!), Yoda, Padme, Dooku, and others. - 16:46 - Yep. The Lars moisture farm on Tatooine, which is filmed in Tunisia. This is where Luke grows up. Joel Edgerton is playing the young "Uncle" Owen, and Bonnie Piesse is "Aunt" Beru, who will raise Luke. - 17:35 - They become more like friends during The Clone Wars, now...they are still Master and Padawan, Teacher and Student. - 17:41 - The late, great Sir Christopher Lee. If you saw 'The Lord of the Rings', you should know him...if not...look up his IMDb and his Wikipedia page. The man was a BAMF, a GOAT, and just had an incredible life. The people he knew, the people he was related to, and the things he did onscreen and off. Incredible man. As Dooku, he is one of my favorite characters of the prequels. - 18:07 - No. Anakin's fall is much more than one incident. He is really a complex character when you see what happens to him not only in the prequels but in the Clone Wars. But he is a young man with a lot of darkness in him, as well as a lot of light. Just remember...The Force is always seeking balance. The Force really is balanced in Anakin. For all of his faults, he does have rather noble and wonderful attributes. For all of the darkness in him, he does strive for the light. - 19:54 - As for Jar-Jar...since the prequels, there have been interesting fan theories around the internet that Jar-Jar was actually a Sith Lord. What is funny is...they actually kinda make sense with the evidence given. Lucas had to actually rethink Jar-Jar due to fan hate because Jar-Jar was intended to be a shadow Sith Lord from his conception...but instead, we got a goofball that quite a lot of fans hate. I have softened a lot towards the character, as much as he annoys me. Mostly due to learning about the real-world backlash actor Ahmed Best has endured in the years since the prequels were released. Both Best and Jake Lloyd (Young Anakin) have gotten a lot of shit from fans, as has Hayden Christensen (Older Anakin). A lot of hate! - 20:48 - Search your feelings, Padawan. What do they tell you? - 24:34 - Yes! A purple lightsaber!!! And all because Samuel L. Jackson asked for a lightsaber that he could tell where he was in the big battle and because it was his favorite color. I play the MMORPG video game 'Star Wars: The Old Republic' and many of my characters have purple lightsabers (both Jedi and Sith). - 26:25 - The army was ordered by Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas...what is not explained was how and why. It was ordered for the Republic, and it was ordered in secret. And after Sifo-Dyas placed the order, he was murdered by his close friend...Count Dooku aka Darth Tyranus. Dooku did so to prove his desire to follow the path of the Dark Side and become the apprentice to Darth Sidious. - 30:15 - To the left of Palpatine is Senator Bail Organa of Alderaan played by one of my favorite TV actors Jimmy Smits. I remember being thrilled seeing him in a 'Star Wars' movie when I first saw this. He is important!!! BTW, if you have seen the film of Lin-Manuel Miranda's 'In The Heights', he played Kevin Rosario. - 30:28 - "is Palpatine...bad?" (Me...not saying a word!) - 34:14 - During the wrap-up, you asked "What are they planning to build?" You must have missed something. Before Dooku got on his little speeder and was chased by the transport with Obi-wan and Anakin, Dooku was handed a small device. In close-up, Dooku activated the device and clicked it on, showing a hologram of The Death Star. That's what they are planning to build. Part of the problem with being a huge 'Star Wars' nerd like me...you get excited when a new fan comes along! You wanna share a lot of stuff. It is kind of amazing. I have always rated this movie as the worst of the entire series, and the first one a close second, but Shanelle manages to make me see merits on both that I did not see before.
They were always better than people have been saying. They just have to be willing to look with more open eyes. The narrative about them is hard to overcome. Just as entertainment, what's not to like? Sci fi adventure. That's all it is.
I'd heard that originally, "Sifo Dyas" was supposed to be the Kaminoans mispronouncing the name of the person who ordered the clones: Sidious, as in Darth Sidious, the Sith in the black robe
Except that Obi-Wan *knew* (or at least knew of) a Jedi named Sifo Dyas, and that they'd died 10 years earlier. So it *can't* be the Kaminoans mangling of 'Sidious'.
I actually think that Anakin's character in this film is quite interesting. Due to being separated from his mother at an age where he has already developed his attachments, it leads him to being rather emotionally unstable over this film and the next. Qui-Gon was meant to serve as Anakin's father figure, but his death left Obi-Wan to try and take over that role. But Obi-Wan could never fulfill that paternal role, and instead acts more as a brother instead of the father figure Anakin needs. This lack of a maternal and paternal figure is what caused Anakin to latch on to Padme when he was younger. Their interactions in Episode I saw Anakin turn to her as his new maternal figure, though by now he has grown up and that relationship has evolved into a romantic one. This forbidden attachment, combined with Anakin's ever growing emotional instabilities, is what pushes him further down the dark side. Plus, the fact that he's been taught to suppress his emotions and attachments makes his interactions more complex, which explains why much of his dialogue with her is rather straight. :)
If you enjoy the relationship between Obi Wan and Anakin, you'd love The Clone Wars animated series. The sarcastic banter between Obi Wan and Anakin, (with the addition of Ahsoka Tano as well,) is an absolute delight.
This movie was...odd. The story was solid. The execution from the actors...could have used some polish. Still, the movie had some shiny parts. Yoda fight. Obi-wan detective work. Anakin and Obi-wan's partnership. Often regarded as one of the weaker star wars films, I think it is a solid entry minus the creepy anakin dialogue with padme.
I blamed the script and the direction more for that element than the actors. Like you said, the creepy dialogue...the actors had to work with those lines.
I was 13 when Attack of the Clones came out, and I remember when it was released on DVD, the only part of the movie I would watch over and over again is the stadium battle. I didn't really notice the really bad dialogue until I was a lot older. As you said, the story itself is fine but I think if the actors had better direction and the script was more fine-tuned it would have been a solid movie.
It's not really the actors who are at fault, it's Lucas. He's notorious for giving very little direction for his characters and going with the first takes. He's apparently not too picky.
Loved your reaction. Much fun! I really enjoy the many details of locations/planets that appear in this SW movie. Regarding story not so convinced of the chemistry between Padme and Annakin either. Pacing/editing feels a bit weird at times. A mixed bag as are all prequel movies, not quite on the same quality level as the original trilogy films. But overall I like the movie a lot nonetheless. It adds many interesting things to the SW universe, imo. Sidenote: There exists a seemingly outrageous fan theory that Jar Jar Binks is actually a Sith. After rewatching the prequel films with some distance and paying more attention to details, even skeptical me now believes this theory might actually be true. Some related relevant story parts were apparently cut out from episode III.
Something to check out (whether you react to it or not is up to you) Is the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. I know of a couple reactors which have tackled it, and its sucessor Rebels. The Clone Wars fills in the story line between Episode II and Episode III. Can watch III without it, just adds a lot of extra character development and build up, helping really flesh out the war as a true war. Rebels is set between Episode 3 and 4.
I am one of those in the minority that really enjoyed this chapter. I was totally behind the romance plotline. Builds up the sense of loss he suffers in the future.
I love how George Lucas took the fan reaction to Jar-Jar into making him partly responsible for the rise of the Empire. That's Rose Byrne as Padme's handmaiden and Joel Edgerton (who'll be returning as well as Beru's actress to the Kenobi series this May) as Owen.
Hey Shan, these films were, for a younger generation, their first Star Wars and they absolutely love them and they will literally knife fight you defending them. Most of them list ep 3 Revenge Of Sith as their absolute favorite Star Wars movie. It's very good but I can't wait to see your reaction.
I remember seeing the trailer for the first time. They ended it with the scene of the clones fighting in that sand storm and did a quick end cut. It looked epic as hell. What a let down from what we actually got. The Jedi came out waving their swords around like a bunch of fairies play acting in a musical or something. And yes...this movie was very PG. Why tease us with a trailer clip that looks like "R" potential (knowing that's what most of us wanted btw) and then hand us a product that's on the level of Shrek?

Saw this in the theater and when Yoda showed up in the final battle people lost thier minds. When he pulled out that light saber the roars were deafening.
I think it was less that he was more spy and that he had just been... more active with the Force. He was still meditating, still practicing, still training. I would assume on Dagobah he almost... stopped all of that, lest Palpatine discover where he was.

So something that I heard a while back for the reason Obi-wan doesn't crack down on Anakin and puts up with a lot of his attitude is because he sees himself more as an elder brother to Anakin rather than a father. Obi-wan had felt that that role had fallen to Qui-gon, but when Qui-gon died he felt it wasn't right to assert himself into that role. Add the fact that Obi-wan was also a very "by-the-book" type of Jedi, he wasn't the best teacher for Anakin anyhow. On a personal note: As a child, I really enjoyed this movie. As an adult, I can't stand it! I want to vomit during all the Anakin/Padme scenes.
Yeah.. George Lucas can't write a love scene to save his life! Sadly, it seems that by this point, his reputation was so big that everyone around him was too scared to tell him how much he sucked at love scenes.
Between Episode 2 and 3 The Clone Wars is Happening, this lasts for three years. Episode 3 is set at the end of the Clone Wars and Anakin matures a lot with all the responsibility he has to take on while fighting in the War
The original 4,5,6 are hands down the best of the best. Next episode 3 is the best out of those 3. My opinion. I just love Star Wars and the music. Especially The Imperial March.

Go back and watch those final scenes of battle with armies. The weapon they are trying to build is the Deathstar, you can see plans for it up on the wall monitor and again when he has a little hologram of it in his handheld device. They show it for sure, don't say it by name though. Notice many of the enemy vehicles and ships in that last battle where sphere shaped.
I think people need to remember that Anakin is 19 years old in this movie. He's still an awkward teenager. However, he's still that good caring 9-year-old boy that we met in episode 1. Padme amidala was 14 years old in episode 1. The youngest Queen to be elected on her planet. She had the same kind of crush most girls had on little boys that were cute and honest. That is the foundation of their love. The uneasy feeling padme's feeling is actually forbidden Love not creepiness. I think the actors that did a fine job. Because creepiness and forbidden Love have similar reactions.
I think there are at least two reasons for the the failure with the love story here. 1) is that Anakin and Padme had not seen each other for 10 years and he still had a crush on her. I wish the background was that the two had seen each other a few times a year in between the films. It would have solidified his love for her and would have given her time to see him grow up. 2) Since they had him fall in love with her as a 9 year old and as a Jedi Padawan he is not allowed emotional entanglements he is approaching this AS a 9year old still.
Being 19 is a bad excuse for his behavior. Especially when mentored by the Jedi order. That's like seeing a buddist monk throwing a temper tantrum. You're trained to be humble and disciplined in self control. Most grow out of those tantrum's by their mid teens unless if they're really really spoiled.

Anakin was not given any training in how to deal with people on a personal level, in negotiating perhaps but as the Jedi did not have attachments he was not taught anything in that area. . That in combination the fact he started his training so late was also a big factor. If he started training when he was truly young (3/4) he never would have had the same attachment to his mother. He would have grown up in a world where from the get go he did not develop the personal attachments. As it he was trained by Obi-wan and not Qui-Gon, he got trained in the cold way that the Jedi are trained by the council. They are a factory and do not take the individual into account. If Qui-Gon had taught him he would have learned how to deal with people better on a personal scale because Qui-Gon dealt with the living force and did not just think of it as a tool.
@@Novaximus His behavior is because he was mentored by the Jedi Order. An organization founded on the idea that you need to suppress your emotions and personal relationships, which in practice often leads to the exact kind of instability we see in Anakin. It's the same reason we see so many emotionally immature, violent, and unstable men in our society. Because it's the same ideals upheld by many people's toxic perceptions of what masculinity should be.
Shanelle, I found your channel a couple weeks back, and have been watching some of your videos. I like your reactions and the way you look at movies. As an older person who saw ROTJ in the theater at age 11, and the original Star Wars at age 6, it's great to watch someone discovering it for the first time. Your determination to go into the prequel trilogy without too much preconception helps a lot. I think these movies aren't as bad as many of us originally may have thought (though I always thought Episode III was a pretty good movie). You put it well in your Episode I video, that it's not the same as the original trilogy, which is totally magical to watch, and I think that's why so much hate got dumped on these films when they came out. The sequel trilogy has taken some of the heat off these in the last few years. I love how you forgot that Palpatine was the bad guy. Keep up the good work!
The prequels tend to be a bit ify.....Although, I think the tie in with the clone wars cartoon makes it better especially the relationships. Love your reactions they are always so fun. Can't wait till you watch the next movie I think its the best from the prequels.
One comment on Anakin's "creepyness". A lot of that has to do with his lack of experience with women. He has "loved" her since he was 9 and with the Jedi not having attachments he has never talked to a girl in a romantic way. Please, give the guy a break. A LOT of Anakin's problems stem from the Jedi Rules and his starting his training so late.

In the bar scene, while chasing the assassin, you would have seen two men turn around in reaction to the brief light sabre duel. Those two were Anthony Daniel's (C3P0) and Ahmad Best (Jar Jar Binks).
Many of us felt that "He was a good friend" did not play out at all. There are videos with suggested alternate prequels that would have been more faithful to the originals. I suggest you not look for them until after seeing Episode 3. Even though we were terribly disappointed when these came out, time heals all wounds. They are good for what they are. I will not say the same about the Disney sequels, which betrayed and murdered the original trilogy.
I agree. I always felt that the prequels were not well written to feed into the original trilogy, and the retconning was awkward. Could have been better from the get-go, although they were adequate and all had high points scattered throughout. And I-III did get better in the progression. I don't want to talk about the last movies. Rogue One was really good.
You could say that this is the worst of the teen Anakin. Later on during the Clone Wars series when Anakin is a bit older we really see the friendship between them.
My research has shown that as far as the colors of the lightsabers goes green is someone who deals with the spiritual side of the Force, blue is someone who deals with more of the physical elements of the Force, Red is someone who deals in the dark side of the Force and purple is someone who has an understanding of the dark and the light sides of the Force. But with Samuel l Jackson even though his lightsaber represents light and dark, he particularly wanted that color to differentiate him from others.
With your last reaction and this one, it is nice for someone to see these films as they are. People either hate them or love them, but the truth is they got some good things in them action wise and such but rough dialogue and character work. And yes, Anakin makes a lot of us uncomfortable.
My favorite story aspect of any of the prequels is Anakin sensing that his mother is in pain across the universe. He uses this to his benefit in Empire Strikes Back when he tortures Han & Leia just because he knows Luke will sense it and come for them. Remember after being tortured Han says “they didn’t even ask me any questions”. The point was just to put him in pain so Luke would sense it. It’s one of the few things that directly connects Anakin in the prequels with Vader in the original trilogy.
I don't think you need to explain. She is pretending not to know. In her final commentary on Return of the Jedi she said she knew the Emperor's name is Palpatine. So she knows exactly who the sith lord is, but is just pretending. What else is she pretending about.
Interestingly enough, there were a lot of cut scenes from this movie, mostly involving Anakin and Padme's romance, many of which were actually not creepy, including a couple of scenes where we get to meet Padme's family. There was another unrelated scene, where we learn about Count Dooku from the Jedi Librarian as well.
It's weird but I never viewed the romance as 'creepy'. I've often compared it to Empire and don't really see much difference if I'm being honest. There's an argument that Empire's romance falls into the 'ambiguous consent' trope which is the same with this film :)
@@onemoreminute0543 I'd even go as far as to say that AotC's romance is less problematic than Empire's.
Because while Anakin and Han are similarly pushy, there's just a lot more mutually discussed consent in Anakin and Padmé's relationship.
She decided over the kiss, she established boundaries which Anakin proceeded to respect until it was ultimately her who accepted his advances, which he had pretty much given up at that point, and initiated the relationship.
The lines with Han and Leia were a lot more blurred and loose, which ultimately was okay since they obviously both wanted each other eventually but it's still weird how the much more clearly consentual relationship is painted as the creepy one.
Reverse the roles, a 20 or dude gets to kmow 6 year old girl, then when they meet again and the girl is in her teen...Bam romance. It's creepy.
@@znk0r Padmé was canonically 14 years old when she hung out with 9 year old Anakin for like a weekend or so. Then, after not seeing each other for a decade, they fell in love when he was 19 and she was 24.
Comparatively, Han Solo was 29 years old when he first met 19 year old Leia in A New Hope.

Yes, it was certainly Lucas' intention to make it a beautiful love story. And it certainly does come from an old school Boomer kinda male-centric POV that comes off as creepy now.
I keep thinking of the "I HATE THEM" scene and my mind always wanders to "and this is turning Padme on?? The confession of an unstable murderer and she's like thinking this is the man of her dreams??"
But the scene is intended to be "look at this tortured soul, and only true love from a righteous woman can keep him on the right path". There's no thought of the woman's POV and how like 5 minutes later she's confessing her love. It's VERY male-centric.
I think that's one big reason why I appreciate the prequels so much more after seeing The Clone Wars. They were able to flesh out the Anakin story so much more. You're able to see how tender their love was, how his relationship with Obi was a very strong one, etc (without giving away spoilers)
The Clone Wars animated show makes these prequel movies even better. Much more Anakin and obi wan, Padme, clones with personalities, filling gaps between episode 2 and 3, it has it all

I never understood why people mock this line - I mean he grew up on Tatooine as a slave. He probably really would hate sand. The fact that people complain about this line is equal to him complaining about sand.
The novelization has Padme falling for Anakin because of his blunt honesty. She's been and worked with politicians her whole life and they always say one thing but mean other things. When he said that line she realized he was not just saying what he thinks she wants to hear.
The Clone Wars animated series covers the 5 year period between this movie and the next. Anakin is much more likeable and it really shows his and Obi Wan's friendship.
Clone Wars only lasted for three years from 22 BBY to 19 BBY. The Clone Wars show starts in 22 BBY a few months or weeks after Attack of the Clones enough time for Anakin to be Knighted and Ahsoka to be set up for Anakin. Clone Wars then ends in 19 BBY connecting to the events of Revenge of the Sith.

The only issue is that this was the first big-budget film shot fully digitally so because it was brand new technology not all the compositing works as well as it could be. But I find that forgivable for that reason - the firsts don't always age well but it opens the door.

Each one of the prequels has more practical effects, miniatures etc. than the entire original trilogy combined. In fact most of the time people complain about bad CGI, it's not even CGI, it's a physical set.
14:42 Aaactually the pear was the *only* CG thing in that scene. The room was a built set, and that sunset landscape was a real shot composited onto blue-screen.
Yeah. The scenes with Anakin and Padme were filmed in much more natural locations to give off an organic aesthetic to the romance. Meanwhile, the scenes with Obi-Wan take place in more digital and sterile locations to give off the an artificial aspect to the mystery :)
One of the hardest things to animate using computers is eating with mouth open: this scene looks odd as the interaction between teeth and food as it's bitten is still challenging. "Alita: Battle Angel" also had a couple of scenes when Alita ate, but they played it safe by getting her to bite off a mouthful with lips closed, thus bypassing the problem, even though the computer technology was miles ahead of this movie.

It's such a wild and untamed, genre-bending space opera ride that mixes an enticing neo-noir cyberpunk mystery investigation with a highly theatrical romance plot and bombastic war story spectacle, all set in space and with wizards. Who else does that? Glorious.
I like how you're one of the few people who understand from the get go that Anakin is a _necessarily_ troubled young man who _needs_ to be a flawed and estranged outcast to eventually become the monster he is bound to be and that a character being flawed doesn't automatically make them a "flawed character", if you catch my drift.
These characters aren't perfect plastic figures. They're not saints.
Anakin is an estranged boy who, after leaving his loving mother as a young child, desperately craves the lacking approval of the stoic monk order he joined and in turn obsessively clings to the little love and emotional support he has in his life, be it from chancellor Palpatine, his mother or his now-wife Padmé.
Obi Wan struggles to fill Qui-Gon's shoes as a paternal mentor to the boy, instead falling into the role of a bickering brother, an equal, and overcompensating with excessive strictness that only further drives Anakin away from him.
Padmé is a young woman who has been wrapped up in a duty bigger than herself for all her life. Now she meets someone who is utterly enamored with her in her truest form, who has idolized her not as a powerful queen or a senator but a mere handmaiden, a person. There's hardly anyone with whom she can just be herself as much as with Anakin. And so she decides to be selfish for the first time in her life and embraces this problematic, forbidden romance.
I just love how flawed they all are.
Especially as an antithetical mirror to the almost fairy tale-esque, inherently heroic trio of the OT.
There's a reason why only one of these narrative halves ends happily while the other one is headed for tragedy.
Let's just say that Lucas didn't hold back with Episode III and there's a reason why even the mainstream likes that one.
These two prior episodes were some heavy but necessary setup work. Now it's time for payoff.
It actually annoyed me when Yoda was condescending to Obi about his "lost" planet. Obi DID come to the conclusion of the records being wrong at the library but the arrogance of the librarian saying "oh well that's impossible for our records to be wrong" is the only reason why he wanted to reaffirm it with Yoda.

None of the problems are what you’re describing. It’s just poorly directed, which leads to wooden acting performances, and has clunky dialogue. We know Lucas can come up with a good story. But he needs someone else to write the final script and direct the actors to produce an Ep.V level of film.

A few years ago I watched a little boy watch Star Wars with his dad for the first time and when Anakin said, “I hate them!” The boy said, “He hates himself.” That was when I finally saw it.
For some reason I divorced Anakin from episode 1 and Anakin from episode 2. Padme doesn’t. She sees that he was a good little boy and he’s being broken by the Jedi because they don’t want him to feel anything and being strong with the force, I think he feels everything. She says “To be angry is to be human.” He needs therapy and I think she might be doing the “I can fix him” nonsense.
I can’t quite see the romance but maybe with more focused dialogue I might have bought it more. The score helps, it’s beautiful and really sets the dramatic love story tone.
The novelization of both Episode 2 and 3 portrays Anakin's and Padme's romance a lot better than the film version do. I was able to read both books prior to the movie releases and the movies leave out a ton of character and relationship building that earlier drafts the novel writers utilized.
His personal conflicts is why he should never have been trained. Too old and missing his mom….mom issues destroyed the universe
I think at first the love story is difficult to comprehend but thinking about it, it’s only a 5 year age gap, they were both young in phantom menace although it seems as if anakin was 5 and padme was 15 he was 9/10 ish and she was 15. Obviously they’re older in the second episode 10 years have past, anakin had a childish crush on her but padme always thought of him as a little boy. He tries proving to her the whole movie that he’s not just “a little boy” I think eventually she sees that and slowly falls in love with him throughout that movie overall she’s not that much older than him but as for like him acting kind of “creepy” anakin being anakin I don’t think he’s good at communicating his feelings which was pretty much the whole reason he turned to the dark side. All he needed was help with his feelings. And in episode 3 obviously them being married and such and such is just them getting older so if you think about it it’s not that weird. I also recommend watching Star Wars theory’s videos called “padme reveals how she fell for anakin when he was only 9” it explains it more in depth but overall I think the love story is difficult to read into if you only see one layer of it.
When this movie came out, I had hard times trying to explain people to look beyond the cheesiness of some scenes and realize the contrast between an ideallic picnic and a young guy telling his love crush he does not mind a dictatorship as long as it works. Then Episode III came and it is still my favorite today, with its shakespearian tragedy feel and Anakin’s faustian pact…

One of my most memorable video game experiences was that fight in Lego Star Wars.

Obi-wan and Ahsoka are specifically not the truest Jedi in the story, that's kind of the point. They're both very emotional characters, obviously not to the level of Anakin, but still not the Jedi ideal. You are equating Jedi with righteous or morally good, but the Jedi are not defacto good.

Didn't we already have...? (looks something up) Oh, guess not. Knights of the Old Republic came out the year after Attack of the Clones. I thought it was older. But yeah, whole big thing in that game about different disciplines within the Jedi order and (even though you were free to pick whatever color you wanted regardless of any other choices you made) certain lightsaber color associations for each of them as well as the Sith.
It's been a long time since I read any of them, but did none of the expanded universe books that existed before the prequel movies ever try to touch on any of this at all? At no point during all the books after Luke's Jedi Academy was established?

Samuel L. Jackson did not need a purple light saber to stand out, just look for the guy running awkwardly with his light saber and the guy who poses for 5 minutes in the most cringeworthy way after he cuts off Jango Fett's head.
I predicted Samuel Jackson were to get a purple lightsaber because it would suit his skin but I couldn't predict he would ask for it himself.
I may be mistaken, but I think there might've been a Star Wars tabletop RPG that predates Attack Of The Clones which includes a myriad of lightsaber colors.
The issue Anakin and Obi-Wan have at this point is that while Obi-Wan looks towards Anakin like a younger brother, Anakin looks towards Obi-Wan as a father figure, similar to how he felt about Qui-Gon. The two don't know how to talk to each other well.
And the REAL real issue is that no time was devoted to developing their relationship; the first time we see them, they're at complete odds, contrary to the warm words Old Ben uses to describe Ani in Ep4 (the elevator scene was tacked on last-minute in an attempted band-aid).

I know we've all heard this, but I'll hijack this comment in the hopes that Shanelle sees it: The song during the Maul fight where Qui Gon dies is called "Duel of the Fates." This is - in part - because the outcome of that fight determines the path that Anakin will go down. If Obi Wan - who thinks of him as a brother - trains him, Anakin won't quite embrace the Jedi teaching as well as he should and constantly power struggle and be consumed with aspiration and fear. If Qui-Gon trains him, then Anakin will have the father figure he never had who will teach him like a father and impress upon Anakin a more nuanced view of Jedi teachings that has room for emotions and attachments and can teach him how to manage those feelings

Pretty spot on there. The time gap between Episodes I and II is around 10 years. The time gap between Episodes II and III is around 3 years. I can’t remember exactly how old Anakin was in The Phantom Menace, but it was somewhere around 8-11 years of age.
There are comic books/graphic novels that talk about how Anakin was treated while a Padawan at the Jedi Temple (spoiler: he was not treated well at all, since he was much older than the other Jedi younglings when he took up residence at the Temple).
Anakin was already a very strong duelist by the time of Attack of the Clones, but during the Clone Wars he got even better still - he just happened to exist at the same time as Dooku, who uses Lightsaber Combat Form II, and is canonically the best practitioner of that style in all of Star Wars history - that’s why Dooku is able to best Anakin at the end of this film.

While others criticize Anakin's flirting with Padme, it never bothered me. Anakin's spent the past decade with monks disconnected from basic emotions, and Padme has to be professional 24/7 because of her senate position. Actual flirting is foreign to them, so they just say whatever comes to mind, even if it isn't coherent.
Yeah, but there is zero chemistry between them. If the script and/or Hayden Christensen would have managed to portrait Anakin as a scary and arrogant yet at the same time confident and charming young man (the quintessential bad boy) the audience would understand much better why Padme falls for him. instead he comes off as awkward, creepy and bitchy. Not really qualities girls usually fall for. I'm not sure who is more at fault here - the writers or Christensen, my guess would be the writers.
@@dennispanko6311 Its a combination of 25 percent writing and 75 direction. The writing needs nudging, the direction is absolutely wack. When decent actors give bad performances, it is almost always the directors fault.
Problem is this total awkwardness has to work because original trilogy happened. If it had started like this and was given room to breathe and develop, it could've been something, but had to rush things because you got only three movies.
Jedi are not disconnected from emotion that is a misconception. All they teach is to be mindful of emotions and not to get possessive of personal relationships.

Actually, it follows the story of the war itself and MANY of the characters involved in it, the Clones themselves often getting much more focus, even when characters like Obi-wan and Anakin are present.

george lucas at the time it was first aired also said its supposed to be a biased, warped perspective of the war and deliberately inaccurate hence the propaganda-style intros. (which is why pre-Disney it was considered 2ndary canon, because its supposed to be an inaccurate portrayal of the war)

The strong focus on the Jedi characters was really only in the early seasons, the series as a whole gives much more varied perspectives, with several episodes even being done entirely from the Separatist point of view. Also, I don't really care what Lucas said it was SUPPOSED to be when it first aired, I'm talking about what it WAS. Besides, the show was run more by Filoni than Lucas anyway.

When I saw this years ago, you could literally feel the whole theater squirm in discomfort at the Anakin/Padme sexytime dialogue. The thing that broke the tension was some dude bursting out laughing hysterically.

The most times I’ve ever seen a movie in theaters was 6, and this was that movie. I don’t know why I was so obsessed with this one in particular. I originally planned on breaking my record for episode III, but only managed to see it twice.
Same for me, except I saw it seven times. Definitely not my favorite Star Wars, but I must like it pretty well to have it hold that record for me.
I saw this one 6 times in theaters too. I saw Revenge of the Sith I think 3 or 4 times in theaters.
But...I saw Phantom Menace 19 times in theaters! I can't imagine I would ever do that again for any movie, LOL.
The "executed by space monsters in an arena/gladiatorial pit" scene is an homage to Edger Rice Burroughs' 1912 novel "Princess of Mars", first in his Barsoom series. Disney made a pretty good film of it in 2012 under the title "John Carter".
I think a lot of the relationship between Obi-Wan and Anakin gets a lot more development in The Clone Wars TV series.
If I remember correctly, the Syfo Dias mystery is basically Dooku posing as Syfo Dias and ordering the clones.
According to Wookieepedia, it was Sifo-Dyas himself who ordered the clones. But this is a very muddy point in the movies that isn't really clarified or explained, or even given a reason as to why we should even care.
I think Anakin is basically a completely different character in The Clone Wars and completely inconsistent with the one in the movies.
@@MrSupertallblackman I mean 2003 also depicted an overexaggerated view on the Jedi and the Clone Wars so both shows kind of do their own thing compared to the films. In terms of tone The Clone Wars 2008 to 2019 is alot closer.
Basically, in the original concept, Sifo Dyas was either Dooku or Sidious using a different name. But in legends they make it where Sifo Dyas pre-emptively ordered the clones because of the return of the Sith(maul). The clones were never made to fight droids, they were made to fight Sith. Then, it was canonized with the clone wars TV show.
I watched this in theaters. I'll never forget the entire theater started applauding when Yoda started fighting Dooku. Great moment
I still remember being in the theater and Yoda entered for the fight. The place went absolutely nuts knowing we were finally gonna get that.

Coming from the generation that actually watched the originals in theaters and growing up waiting for this prequal series... I do not understand the negative reviews. We got some more Star Wars and was able to relieve our youth a little through them.
as a 96 kid I agree with you, but people will use that same defense for 7-9 and those from my view were trash. So you have to bring some decent arguments to justify the films and see the weaknesses too.
As someone who grew up in the generation that watched the originals I'll tell you the reason for the negative reviews. The movie is trash top to bottom. I refer you to Red Letter Media's critique for a fully fleshed out analysis of said trash.

Best use of imperial march in a Star Wars movie is the ending of Attack of the Clones. And the way how it flows into the Anakin/Padme love theme is one of John Williams' finest work.

The dialogue is rough but I adore how they really focused on building and showing the world/ universe. This movie sets up A LOT and is necessary for the next movie, which I personally think is the best Star Wars movie there is
the worst thing for me about these movies is... the cinematography!walks into frame and then stands like chess pieces facing each other, giving very wooden dialogue, also too much cgi!

I agree. Love or hate (or in between) the prequels, the world building in the prequels is great. I’m not the biggest prequel fan, but aside from the dialogue, for me, the rest was pretty good.

After you watch Revenge of the Sith you should definitely watch the shows, Clone Wars, Bad Batch, Rebels, The Manadlorian and Book of Boba Fett. They all do so much to flesh out the story and the world building.

I think the prequels get better with each film. This one felt much darker and more complex than the first one.
One of the things I love about the Clone Wars is see how the Empire's military weapons equipment and weapons evolved directly from the Clone equipment shown in the prequels. There are earlier models of X-Wings, AT-ATs, Star Destroyers, Storm Trooper Armor, A-Wings, and so much more. It gives a sense of time between the OT and the prequels.
Hey, just wanted to point out the volume seems a little low. People can always lower their volume i video is too loud, but some can only turn up the volume so much on a video with already low audio. Better too loud than too soft.
Yeah...I could cope with that a bit easier if the ads didn't pop on and blast my eardrums out, cos I have the volume all the way up.
Agreed... I've always wondered why pro reactors have such a hard time dialing in their audio settings. She's been doing it long enough that you'd think she would know where to set the gain/input volume (or mic position) so that it is consistent across videos. Even worse to me is when a reactor has the movie audio at a much lower volume than their mic audio, so that you go deaf every time they speak. Shanelle has not typically had this issue, but others don't seem to have a clue how to mix their feeds.

Great reaction. I love that shot of Padme’s and Anakin’s shadow on Tatooine- his Jedi mullet really forms Darth Vader’s helmet! Also there are a few cameos in the club scene ie the actors that play C3PO and Jar-Jar are shown in close up!
I really, really hope you continue to have the same attitude as with these as far as what you see/hear online and watch the sequels and standalone movies as well. As someone who grew up in the 90s but was still an OT fan, I love both the prequels and the sequels because I just love Star Wars. Are there things I don't care for? Sure, but that's true even for the originals. It's so much easier to enjoy what's given instead of being upset it's not what you would have written.
Also, best part of this movie is that Obi-Wan spends most of it just basically participating in a Scooby-Doo episode lol
While I don't care about the sequels, I was a prequel kid so I'm npt going to hate them or their fans. Not goibg to do the same crap older fans did to me growing up, constantly telling me the movies I loved were crap and that I was a "fake fan". I'm glad theres enough content for everyone and we can all love star wars in different ways.
The problem with the sequels is not that they "did things I don't want them to do." This is a gaslighting/denial/deflection of what the REAL criticisms are. And that is how badly written those fins are, how much they break Star Wars lore, AND how much they disrespect snd make pointless the previous six. The prayers for their faults....do not make the OT pointless, and for any of their writing issues, the basic plot is still fantastic. The sequels don't have good plots, good writing, AND they destroy fan favorite characters.
Yoda trained Count Dooku, Dooku trained Qui-Gon Jinn, Qui-Gon trained Obi-Wan Kenobi, Obi-Wan trains Anakin Skywalker
I always loved Episode II because of the darker storytelling. The introduction of the Clones never felt fully paid-off to me, and even in Episode III there was very little...attachment to them. It always felt weird. Then Lucas made the Clone Wars animated series, which was PHENOMENAL. Now I can watch Episode II and III and I have that attachment to the Clones that I (personally) needed. Episode III: Revenge of the Sith is my favorite Star Wars movie. Most may disagree, but I just LOVE IT. It's so dark.
This is why episode 2 should have been episode 1. And in between this and episode 3 should have been the actual clone wars paying off, the clones, Anakins relationship with Obi Wan, his relationship with Padme. Introduce some of the reasons he starts to distrust the Jedi council. You know, basically the clone wars series stuff.

That's why they already made the Clone Wars (2003) cartoons before Episode III came out. Sadly no one has seen them or remembers, these cartoons (or the 2007 CGI series) make Episode III perhaps the best of the bunch.

Then a good-looking young black man, that is Ahmed Best, who plays Jar-Jar Binks. Also, the guy who offers Obi-wan death-sticks was Matt Doran aka Mouse from 'The Matrix'.
- 14:04 - That is Temura Morrison as Jango Fett. He is now on Disney+ playing Boba Fett in 'The Book of Boba Fett'. He also plays all of the clones in Episode III (not really a spoiler...they are clones of Jango). He also plays Jason Momoa's father, Thomas Curry in 'Aquaman'. He is a New Zealand actor, and I think he is Maori.
- 15:57 - There is no comprehensive Obi-wan origin story. Most of what is known of his backstory as a Padawan comes from the 'Legends' canon, and not from Disney's 'Official Canon'. After Disney purchased LucasFilm, a lot of the canon stories written in books, comics, and video games were classed as 'Legends', that is Disney was not honoring the work of many authors, artists, and designers prior to the LucasFilm sale. Disney has been slowly confirming some 'Legends' characters as canon (Revan from the 'Star Wars: The Old Republic' era, as well as Darth Bane from the same era who created The Rule of Two for the Sith). However, Ewan MacGregor has been filming the 'Obi-wan Kenobi' series for Disney+ which will deal with the years between Episodes III & IV. Also, the animated series 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars' tells what happens between Episodes II & III...and A LOT happens, along with a lot of backstories for Obi-wan (including a lost love), Anakin (he has a Padawan who is the most incredible female character in all of 'Star Wars'...even better than Leia, and that is saying something!!!), Yoda, Padme, Dooku, and others.
- 16:46 - Yep. The Lars moisture farm on Tatooine, which is filmed in Tunisia. This is where Luke grows up. Joel Edgerton is playing the young "Uncle" Owen, and Bonnie Piesse is "Aunt" Beru, who will raise Luke.

- 17:41 - The late, great Sir Christopher Lee. If you saw 'The Lord of the Rings', you should know him...if not...look up his IMDb and his Wikipedia page. The man was a BAMF, a GOAT, and just had an incredible life. The people he knew, the people he was related to, and the things he did onscreen and off. Incredible man. As Dooku, he is one of my favorite characters of the prequels.
- 18:07 - No. Anakin's fall is much more than one incident. He is really a complex character when you see what happens to him not only in the prequels but in the Clone Wars. But he is a young man with a lot of darkness in him, as well as a lot of light. Just remember...The Force is always seeking balance. The Force really is balanced in Anakin. For all of his faults, he does have rather noble and wonderful attributes. For all of the darkness in him, he does strive for the light.
- 19:54 - As for Jar-Jar...since the prequels, there have been interesting fan theories around the internet that Jar-Jar was actually a Sith Lord. What is funny is...they actually kinda make sense with the evidence given. Lucas had to actually rethink Jar-Jar due to fan hate because Jar-Jar was intended to be a shadow Sith Lord from his conception...but instead, we got a goofball that quite a lot of fans hate. I have softened a lot towards the character, as much as he annoys me. Mostly due to learning about the real-world backlash actor Ahmed Best has endured in the years since the prequels were released. Both Best and Jake Lloyd (Young Anakin) have gotten a lot of shit from fans, as has Hayden Christensen (Older Anakin). A lot of hate!

- 24:34 - Yes! A purple lightsaber!!! And all because Samuel L. Jackson asked for a lightsaber that he could tell where he was in the big battle and because it was his favorite color. I play the MMORPG video game 'Star Wars: The Old Republic' and many of my characters have purple lightsabers (both Jedi and Sith).
- 26:25 - The army was ordered by Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas...what is not explained was how and why. It was ordered for the Republic, and it was ordered in secret. And after Sifo-Dyas placed the order, he was murdered by his close friend...Count Dooku aka Darth Tyranus. Dooku did so to prove his desire to follow the path of the Dark Side and become the apprentice to Darth Sidious.
- 30:15 - To the left of Palpatine is Senator Bail Organa of Alderaan played by one of my favorite TV actors Jimmy Smits. I remember being thrilled seeing him in a 'Star Wars' movie when I first saw this. He is important!!! BTW, if you have seen the film of Lin-Manuel Miranda's 'In The Heights', he played Kevin Rosario.

- 34:14 - During the wrap-up, you asked "What are they planning to build?" You must have missed something. Before Dooku got on his little speeder and was chased by the transport with Obi-wan and Anakin, Dooku was handed a small device. In close-up, Dooku activated the device and clicked it on, showing a hologram of The Death Star. That's what they are planning to build.

It is kind of amazing. I have always rated this movie as the worst of the entire series, and the first one a close second, but Shanelle manages to make me see merits on both that I did not see before.
They were always better than people have been saying. They just have to be willing to look with more open eyes. The narrative about them is hard to overcome. Just as entertainment, what's not to like? Sci fi adventure. That's all it is.
They are good movies except for the dialogue and direction. You have to filter that out and be able to appreciate them.

I'd heard that originally, "Sifo Dyas" was supposed to be the Kaminoans mispronouncing the name of the person who ordered the clones: Sidious, as in Darth Sidious, the Sith in the black robe
Except that Obi-Wan *knew* (or at least knew of) a Jedi named Sifo Dyas, and that they'd died 10 years earlier. So it *can't* be the Kaminoans mangling of 'Sidious'.
You may remember in Episode 4 when Luke first meets Obi-Wan he has a line "you fought in the Clone War with my father?".
I actually think that Anakin's character in this film is quite interesting. Due to being separated from his mother at an age where he has already developed his attachments, it leads him to being rather emotionally unstable over this film and the next. Qui-Gon was meant to serve as Anakin's father figure, but his death left Obi-Wan to try and take over that role. But Obi-Wan could never fulfill that paternal role, and instead acts more as a brother instead of the father figure Anakin needs.
This lack of a maternal and paternal figure is what caused Anakin to latch on to Padme when he was younger. Their interactions in Episode I saw Anakin turn to her as his new maternal figure, though by now he has grown up and that relationship has evolved into a romantic one. This forbidden attachment, combined with Anakin's ever growing emotional instabilities, is what pushes him further down the dark side. Plus, the fact that he's been taught to suppress his emotions and attachments makes his interactions more complex, which explains why much of his dialogue with her is rather straight.

If you enjoy the relationship between Obi Wan and Anakin, you'd love The Clone Wars animated series. The sarcastic banter between Obi Wan and Anakin, (with the addition of Ahsoka Tano as well,) is an absolute delight.
This movie was...odd. The story was solid. The execution from the actors...could have used some polish.
Still, the movie had some shiny parts. Yoda fight. Obi-wan detective work. Anakin and Obi-wan's partnership.
Often regarded as one of the weaker star wars films, I think it is a solid entry minus the creepy anakin dialogue with padme.
I blamed the script and the direction more for that element than the actors. Like you said, the creepy dialogue...the actors had to work with those lines.

I was 13 when Attack of the Clones came out, and I remember when it was released on DVD, the only part of the movie I would watch over and over again is the stadium battle. I didn't really notice the really bad dialogue until I was a lot older. As you said, the story itself is fine but I think if the actors had better direction and the script was more fine-tuned it would have been a solid movie.
It's not really the actors who are at fault, it's Lucas. He's notorious for giving very little direction for his characters and going with the first takes. He's apparently not too picky.

I really enjoy the many details of locations/planets that appear in this SW movie. Regarding story not so convinced of the chemistry between Padme and Annakin either. Pacing/editing feels a bit weird at times. A mixed bag as are all prequel movies, not quite on the same quality level as the original trilogy films. But overall I like the movie a lot nonetheless. It adds many interesting things to the SW universe, imo.
Sidenote: There exists a seemingly outrageous fan theory that Jar Jar Binks is actually a Sith. After rewatching the prequel films with some distance and paying more attention to details, even skeptical me now believes this theory might actually be true. Some related relevant story parts were apparently cut out from episode III.
Something to check out (whether you react to it or not is up to you) Is the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. I know of a couple reactors which have tackled it, and its sucessor Rebels. The Clone Wars fills in the story line between Episode II and Episode III. Can watch III without it, just adds a lot of extra character development and build up, helping really flesh out the war as a true war. Rebels is set between Episode 3 and 4.

Hey Shan, these films were, for a younger generation, their first Star Wars and they absolutely love them and they will literally knife fight you defending them. Most of them list ep 3 Revenge Of Sith as their absolute favorite Star Wars movie. It's very good but I can't wait to see your reaction.
I remember seeing the trailer for the first time. They ended it with the scene of the clones fighting in that sand storm and did a quick end cut. It looked epic as hell. What a let down from what we actually got.
The Jedi came out waving their swords around like a bunch of fairies play acting in a musical or something. And yes...this movie was very PG. Why tease us with a trailer clip that looks like "R" potential (knowing that's what most of us wanted btw) and then hand us a product that's on the level of Shrek?

Unfortunately the kid that played young young Anakin grew up with so much hate for the character and perhaps his acting that he had major depression problems.
Saw this in the theater and when Yoda showed up in the final battle people lost thier minds. When he pulled out that light saber the roars were deafening.
D/w, everyone at the time was wondering how Yoda was supposed to duel someone. I guess he was just more spry at 860 than he was at 900 years old.
I think it was less that he was more spy and that he had just been... more active with the Force. He was still meditating, still practicing, still training. I would assume on Dagobah he almost... stopped all of that, lest Palpatine discover where he was.
Being unable to walk doesn't prevent him from doing leaps and flips.
He used the Force to make his creaky muscles do their job, kind of like when adrenaline gets pumped into the body.

So something that I heard a while back for the reason Obi-wan doesn't crack down on Anakin and puts up with a lot of his attitude is because he sees himself more as an elder brother to Anakin rather than a father. Obi-wan had felt that that role had fallen to Qui-gon, but when Qui-gon died he felt it wasn't right to assert himself into that role.
Add the fact that Obi-wan was also a very "by-the-book" type of Jedi, he wasn't the best teacher for Anakin anyhow.
On a personal note: As a child, I really enjoyed this movie. As an adult, I can't stand it! I want to vomit during all the Anakin/Padme scenes.
Yeah.. George Lucas can't write a love scene to save his life! Sadly, it seems that by this point, his reputation was so big that everyone around him was too scared to tell him how much he sucked at love scenes.
Between Episode 2 and 3 The Clone Wars is Happening, this lasts for three years. Episode 3 is set at the end of the Clone Wars and Anakin matures a lot with all the responsibility he has to take on while fighting in the War

The original 4,5,6 are hands down the best of the best. Next episode 3 is the best out of those 3. My opinion. I just love Star Wars and the music. Especially The Imperial March.

Go back and watch those final scenes of battle with armies. The weapon they are trying to build is the Deathstar, you can see plans for it up on the wall monitor and again when he has a little hologram of it in his handheld device. They show it for sure, don't say it by name though. Notice many of the enemy vehicles and ships in that last battle where sphere shaped.
I think people need to remember that Anakin is 19 years old in this movie. He's still an awkward teenager. However, he's still that good caring 9-year-old boy that we met in episode 1. Padme amidala was 14 years old in episode 1. The youngest Queen to be elected on her planet. She had the same kind of crush most girls had on little boys that were cute and honest. That is the foundation of their love.
The uneasy feeling padme's feeling is actually forbidden Love not creepiness. I think the actors that did a fine job. Because creepiness and forbidden Love have similar reactions.
I think there are at least two reasons for the the failure with the love story here. 1) is that Anakin and Padme had not seen each other for 10 years and he still had a crush on her. I wish the background was that the two had seen each other a few times a year in between the films. It would have solidified his love for her and would have given her time to see him grow up. 2) Since they had him fall in love with her as a 9 year old and as a Jedi Padawan he is not allowed emotional entanglements he is approaching this AS a 9year old still.
Being 19 is a bad excuse for his behavior. Especially when mentored by the Jedi order. That's like seeing a buddist monk throwing a temper tantrum. You're trained to be humble and disciplined in self control. Most grow out of those tantrum's by their mid teens unless if they're really really spoiled.
Blaming bad writing and zero chemistry between actors for the romance not working makes a lot more sense than your apologia. Sorry

Anakin was not given any training in how to deal with people on a personal level, in negotiating perhaps but as the Jedi did not have attachments he was not taught anything in that area. . That in combination the fact he started his training so late was also a big factor.
If he started training when he was truly young (3/4) he never would have had the same attachment to his mother. He would have grown up in a world where from the get go he did not develop the personal attachments.
As it he was trained by Obi-wan and not Qui-Gon, he got trained in the cold way that the Jedi are trained by the council. They are a factory and do not take the individual into account. If Qui-Gon had taught him he would have learned how to deal with people better on a personal scale because Qui-Gon dealt with the living force and did not just think of it as a tool.

An organization founded on the idea that you need to suppress your emotions and personal relationships, which in practice often leads to the exact kind of instability we see in Anakin. It's the same reason we see so many emotionally immature, violent, and unstable men in our society. Because it's the same ideals upheld by many people's toxic perceptions of what masculinity should be.
Shanelle, I found your channel a couple weeks back, and have been watching some of your videos. I like your reactions and the way you look at movies. As an older person who saw ROTJ in the theater at age 11, and the original Star Wars at age 6, it's great to watch someone discovering it for the first time. Your determination to go into the prequel trilogy without too much preconception helps a lot. I think these movies aren't as bad as many of us originally may have thought (though I always thought Episode III was a pretty good movie). You put it well in your Episode I video, that it's not the same as the original trilogy, which is totally magical to watch, and I think that's why so much hate got dumped on these films when they came out. The sequel trilogy has taken some of the heat off these in the last few years. I love how you forgot that Palpatine was the bad guy. Keep up the good work!
The prequels tend to be a bit ify.....Although, I think the tie in with the clone wars cartoon makes it better especially the relationships. Love your reactions they are always so fun. Can't wait till you watch the next movie I think its the best from the prequels.

One comment on Anakin's "creepyness". A lot of that has to do with his lack of experience with women. He has "loved" her since he was 9 and with the Jedi not having attachments he has never talked to a girl in a romantic way. Please, give the guy a break. A LOT of Anakin's problems stem from the Jedi Rules and his starting his training so late.
That and he's someone who's had PTSD. He's going to be awkward and weird because the only model for love he's had was his own mother.

In the bar scene, while chasing the assassin, you would have seen two men turn around in reaction to the brief light sabre duel.
Those two were Anthony Daniel's (C3P0) and Ahmad Best (Jar Jar Binks).
Many of us felt that "He was a good friend" did not play out at all. There are videos with suggested alternate prequels that would have been more faithful to the originals. I suggest you not look for them until after seeing Episode 3.
Even though we were terribly disappointed when these came out, time heals all wounds. They are good for what they are.

I agree. I always felt that the prequels were not well written to feed into the original trilogy, and the retconning was awkward. Could have been better from the get-go, although they were adequate and all had high points scattered throughout. And I-III did get better in the progression. I don't want to talk about the last movies. Rogue One was really good.
You could say that this is the worst of the teen Anakin. Later on during the Clone Wars series when Anakin is a bit older we really see the friendship between them.

Have you thought about checking out George Lucas’ first Sci-fi movie, THX1138?
My research has shown that as far as the colors of the lightsabers goes green is someone who deals with the spiritual side of the Force, blue is someone who deals with more of the physical elements of the Force, Red is someone who deals in the dark side of the Force and purple is someone who has an understanding of the dark and the light sides of the Force.
But with Samuel l Jackson even though his lightsaber represents light and dark, he particularly wanted that color to differentiate him from others.
With your last reaction and this one, it is nice for someone to see these films as they are. People either hate them or love them, but the truth is they got some good things in them action wise and such but rough dialogue and character work.
And yes, Anakin makes a lot of us uncomfortable.
