If you are singing 5-7x a week for these broadway shows, you’ll probably understand better why Lea is doing these mix techniques like “operatic-contemporary..ish mixing” that you noticed picking. This is acceptable to protecting her voice, you should listen to some of her interviews as well. The musical geniuses were the once who taught her to do this if I remember it right from one of her interviews.
She talked about using classical methods during her Broadway runs when she was losing her voice to save it. I remember her speaking about it on one of the episodes of The Voice. So that's probably what she was doing here to prevent strain.
Yes...in her interview it was because of singing opera to vocalize as well saved her voice coz at one point in her singing career she almost lost it...
Agreed. There is a vid of Lea Salonga highlights from MISS SAIGON. The clips are from the Manila 2000 production she did (not the original London or Broadway), but her performance is amazing and it is clear why she won every major award for her original portrayal of Kim.
She is perfect and wouldn’t change a thing. This is my favorite version of Les Mis. It’s from the anniversary show with Ramin Karimloo, Alfie boe, Hadley Fraser, And Norm Lewis.
Singing in broadway is different from just singing technically, it is harder cause you need to be technical and operatic at the same time and you need to act while singing and sing your song with full emotions, you are the embodiment of the song you are one with it rather than just hitting the notes and you do this world class singing in fromt of VIP and Legends of the world for 3 times a day or more, 7 times a week. She has been in Miss Saigon, Les Miserables and other Broadway shows all days of her life for decades continuously in both London and New York. Voice of Disney Princesses and Tony Award winner. Who can judge her when she is more experienced than anyone it is like Godfather of cooking Marco Pierre White being scored and judged by Michelin people when he has the most experience than everyone lol.
When she pulled back, as a listener it didn’t hurt my ears compared to what you did. Both powerful versions, but there is more drama and I’m pulled in as an audience with Leah’s.
@@mikekenyon8483 You've probably heard her voice, though. She was the singing voice of Jasmine and Mulan in their respective Disney movies (the original animated ones).
I always assumed her pushing these notes was just part of her acting out the character. Certainly sounds much more heartfelt than just belting it or using an operatic head voice. Certainly worked to create a powerful performance in my view.

Maybe, but this is probably the only song I've ever heard her sing that wasn't my favorite version of the song. On my own, Don't cry for me Argentina, all the Disney songs, she shows that it's not just her voice, it's her skill and choices. This one, it's good, but for once, just in my opinion, not the GOAT.
I got to see Lea Salonga in concert one time, and she is flipping amazing. She can do all styles from opera to pop, and even vocal impressions of celebrity singers.
I'm so glad you're doing this one. I love her version of "On My Own", but I feel like this one is too often overlooked. It absolutely gives me chills. Excited to hear your thoughts!
She has my favorite two performances from both the 10th anniversary (On my own/A little Fall of rain), and this one from the 25th anniversary performance. No other actor has performed two different parts 15 years apart from this amazing show.
You are concerned about the techniques of how her tongue gets in the way. Reasons: saving and protecting her voice and positioning her mouth, tongue and face because she is acting at the same time. If it is simply a studio recording without acting in front of an audience, then you will hear a different technique. Lea would not be Lea in the musical world if she does not know the proper techniques.
@@hd7704 she's definitely clueless. In the description, she says this is from the 2012 movie. You know, the movie where Anne Hathaway played Fantine and won an Oscar.
She was pulling her tongue back because she has to. She's on broadway. Doing that almost every day. It takes its toll to her voice. That's very different from standing in front of camera and teach. That's live, powerful and emotional singing right there.
No, her tongue isn’t in the way, just like how you tried to mimick how you thought she sounded. You can clearly see that her tongue placement is relaxed on the video. It just how she colors her voice. In this role, Fantine has to have a thicker and darker sound to resemble a more mature character.
It may not be her tongue but the singer is pronouncing the vowels in a very round way and not emphasizing the eeeeeee, which does lend to a warmer sound than if she did it the way this person is mentioning. I think it sounds fine either way, but she is definitely accessing the note from a falsetto/head voice which a lot of folks have mentioned is a solid technique to protect the vocal chords for folks that sing professionally in lots of back to back shows.
I actually like her style (of pulling her tongue in per your description) to hit those higher notes as she sounded more full, round and smooth compared to your demonstration (without pulling the tongue in) which sounded pitchy, screamy (if I may use that word), thin and painful to the ear.
Yes I agree with you. Leah is a perfectionist and a very experienced broadway star, Im sure she knows what sounds better as opposed to ‘some voice coach/reactors’ just sayin…
I actually had the same thoughts! When reactor did the alternative way of singing it, the emotional texture which Lea had got lost. I thought Lea's choice would have been too obvious already.
shes technically singing it, as a pro broadway diva she must knew what shes doing. You just cant see and appreciate the technique Lea's using so she will hit those notes perfectly and it sounds really theatrical.
This vocal reactor is one of the worst. She’s most ecstatic about the pre-recorded and over-produced vocals on the corny tv show Glee. She always seems to have the most catty comments for Asian singers
She reminds me of all those people who missed the brilliance of Pablo Picasso because they refuse to open their minds and creativity of others. It's quite sad and pathetic really...
I'm no vocal or singing expert but as a thespian too, what I know is her placement or techniques is not just technical... it also needs to adjust on the mood and acting she needs to do for that scene. That is why her facial expressions including her mouth and/ or tongue might also vary from what is expected with from just singing alone. And there are specific words that we need to emphasize and that too can make a whole lot of difference. More so, it's no joke when we had to tour and do 3-4 shows a day or even simply needing to preserve your voice for several runs. It has to be a balance of both acting and singing. We can't afford to compromise or lose one. I suggest we try to do it too in front of a mirror or record ourselves. Do this at least 2x a day for 7 days straight and not just with one song. Sing it with emotions and a character to portray then we'll see how complex it can really get. And for her pulling it off... no words. :)
Lea is actually 15 years older in this video from the prior Eponine performance, so I think the vowel sounds here are a purposeful choice. It seems she's putting on a more mature, "weathered" affectation as Fantine to distinguish the two different characters she's played. My guess is that this choice was very deliberate, so audiences didn't envision her as Eponine again (youthful, juvenile, impetuous, optimistic).
I’ve never seen anyone do this song better than Lea Salonga, imo, and her performance during this 25th anniversary show was absolutely amazing. I love her voice…in no way a trained vocal coach or anything!! I’ve never seen her perform anything that wasn’t just stunning. Have you done a review of her singing “Movie in My Mind” for an anniversary concert of Miss Saigon? The duet with her and Rachelle…gahh, forgetting her last name, was so great…from just a lover of musicals and singers with beautiful voices. Also, do you think that when someone like Lea, who has probably had a lot of professional training, thinks about the things your talk about (facial moves, palette, etc) when they are singing…or do they just get into the moment during a performance…no idea.
Her belting is in between classical and contemporary. It’s not simply a soprano. She also uses this style on the ending part of Reflection. And that’s her signature.
We Filipinos read about Ms Lea in our social studies and history classes the same way you read about George Washington Now that's power that's influence
Lea Salonga, Musical theatre icon 😍. This isn't even the Les Mis part or song that she is best known for (Eponine, and On MY Own) which shows her incredible range. I love that because she was too old to play Eponine by the time the 25th anniversary concert she was cast as Fantine and was incredible. Mostly she is credited for changing perceptions in Broadway audiences about casting outside the original ethnic origin of the character. She was the only ethnic minority cast member in Les Mis. Plus she is the voice of TWO Disney princesses (Jasmine and Mulan).
SHE WAS SICK THAT DAY! That’s why her voice wasn’t as perfect! I was just a little disappointed. But if she wasn’t sick! My gosh it would of been beyond perfect ❤
If I have the facts right, Lea was 16 when she "landed" her first job as Disney's Jasmine from Aladdin. And from there it went uphill. What I really love about her, is when she calls someone from the audience onto stage to sing with her. This is my favorite one: ua-cam.com/video/RGWC7icTM_E/v-deo.html
I’m afraid your facts aren’t right. Lea was cast in Miss Saigon when she was 17, Jasmine came a few years later. But her professional career started in the Philippines as a child star of stage and screen. (And yes it’s totally fun to see what happens when she pulls someone up to duet with her.)
She played the lead role in the musical "Annie" produced by Repertory Philippines when she was a young child. I still remember her guesting in one local tv show to promote that musical. She came sporting a wig with tight curls and singing "Tomorrow". She made me a huge fan after that.
Aladdin was definitely not her first job, and it was 1992 when she was cast as Jasmine, so she would've been 20/21 at the time. She had already done many works in theatre, television, and film at that point.
I was lucky enough to be in the audience for that historic 25th Anniversary performance at The O2 in London, and was even more lucky to meet her (and the rest of the cast) at the after-party. She was beyond lovely but also beyond tired.. I had friends that were also performing in that show and I know from them they worked them to the bone (!!!) for that performance.. There were a HUGE cast combined with the West End cast, the new (then) touring cast, and an all-star cast, plus a chorus hundreds (all previous cast alumni), and their schedule was insane... I think she was just tired..
She is pulling her tougue on many occasion and I think it help her build her character of something frantic, desperate, regretful and informal. There's some texture of crying induced nasal when she does it and it accompanie well the character on that scene.
I remember seeing this performance and at the time Ms Lea had recently been playing Fantine on Broadway (if I remember correctly). I feel like she had some strain at the top to protect just like you picked up on and a year or so later, suddenly it all came back after some rest. More recent versions of this song have been crystal clear, just like the classic Lea sound. That last note though...
There are times you have to adjust if your voice is tired. I think maybe she might be tired. I tend to do that and I am classically trained. And it can be stylistic too. It is almost like what I call a "cover" and pull back.
Lea started really young and her being casted in Miss Saigon in her teens has improved her singing a lot although she sang in broadway type shows before Miss Saigon. It’s her job for life.
I always thought she did the tongue pull for effect because like you said she didn't "need" to. It always felt to me like she was creating the heartbreak and desperation in that sound. I really like your analysis style. Have you ever broken down anything from the musical "Company"?
she does that (pulling the tongue backwards - operatic sounding) because she wants to sound like she's CRYING in the song.. because that part of the story was full of MISERY after what FANTINE had to experience in her life. so, it's intended and not by accident.
I don’t think she’s pulling her tongue back. When I hear her doing that I see that she’s adjusting her jaw to mix the vowel “e” with the “a”- vowel migration. It’s better than singing it nasal.
I love Lea Selonga. My friend's daughter Mia Jenkins was young Cosette in the 25th anniversary recording .. she's grown into such a beautiful talented young lady now. xx
She's really a Disney Princess, Ms Saigon and Broadway. A whole new world, original version was sung by Brad Kane (Aladdin's singing voice) and Lea Salonga (Jasmine's singing voice) in 1992
pls react on her performance in miss saigon, specifically the "I'd give my life for you" song. I really love it, i could not think anything but my mother when i listen to it. Just requesting to remember our mother this Christmas.❤️
Look her face my dear, Lea Salonga is complete in the emotion, I'd say too into the emotion, that's why some sounds are not so pure but perfect interpretation anyway.. She's Lea Salonga a master singing and a legend in broadway, and in this interpretation she's amazing as always.
This is one of my favorite versions of this song. The only one that i slightly prefer is Ruthie Henshall singing it at the 10th anniversary. Maybe you could react to that too :))
10th Anniversary concert, as a whole, is completely underrated. ((Colm Wilkinson is *chefs kiss* perfection; plus Michael Ball, plus Michael Maguire, plus Ruthie. Stacked cast!)). I personally prefer Lea as Eponine, but she is also really great here as Fantine. Could be I’m just so used to Ruthie as Fantine from the 10th Anniversary concert, since I’ve been listening to that concert album for over 25 years. But Lea is also flawless.
@@thesalmondean The 10th anniversary is honestly not underrated at all. Most people just naturally agree that the 10th anniversary is the best ever performance with the dream cast
@@masteryoda4583 I thought this was true, too - but for the last ten years all I ever saw online when it came to Les Mis was the 25th Anniversary concert. Not a lot of people talking about or acknowledging the 10th Ann which is leaps and bounds and just infinitely better. But maybe that's a recency bias situation. In my experience, it feels like 10th is overlooked a lot. But if I'm wrong, then that's great.
Lea had perfectly sung this with her own style and technique, if you were at her situation with all those factors that would interfere her voice doing acting while singing and not feeling well that time but still she handled it very smoothly and amazingly... Lea is one in a million , recognized and honored.
wow, i'm sorry, i must haver missed when you were asked to be in the 25th and/or 30th anniversary? Am i wrong? How many Tony's or Golden Globes do you have?
In the description, it says this is a breakdown of "Lea Salonga from the 2012 movie adaptation of Les Miserables the musical". Lea wasn't in the movie. Anne Hathaway played Fantine in the film and she sang this song. She also won an Oscar for the role. This performance is from the 25th Anniversary concert in 2010.
Maybe the reason for the tongue pulling back is because of what the character feels at that moment/situation OR maybe is it the accent of the character that she wants to portray. Just my two cents.
Ealing’s is simply making artistic choices, using her classical voice for certain notes over a metallic belt sound throughout…it’s called tonal colour And the examples the coach here, herself is giving are pretty shrill sounding
Would you expect anything less from the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical and the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical Award Winner?
My daughter's vocal coach who is a (theatre actress in the city) always referenced Leah Salonga in her classes. Every professional singer knows and admire the Leah Salonga.
This reactor just pretends to be superior so she can sell singing lessons to fools. She will even search the Internet for weak performances so she can pretend to be superior
Hi! Love your stuff (videos). Can you do me a small favor? When you get to the end of a great "live" performance (if it's Glee, who cares) like say, Lea doing On My Own, please don't immediately cut it off and chop off the cheers at the end. I get that you already stopped the video 10 times. It's what you do but I still want that wave to wash over me at the end. You know what I'm talking about. It's kinda like performance-interuptus, if you catch my drift. ;-)
In the voice ph, she talks about how she basically damaged her voice while singing classical. 🤔 Not sure if anyone here has anymore info about that, just curious
I saw the original cast in London with the great Colm Wilkinson as Valjean and Roger Allam as a brilliant Javier. The Soprana who sang this song adopted a more fragile approach, much less Push than Lea is using both very affecting. Both interesting versions.

Aladdin was definitely not her first job, and it was 1992 when she was cast as Jasmine, so she would've been 20/21 at the time. She had already done many works in theatre, television, and film at that point.
@@Robynhoodlum Yes, Lea was the singing voice of Jasmine and also Mulan 😊
Please do Ruthie Henshall from Les Miserables 10th Anniversary Concert
I would like to add to that please does Lea Salonga singing “on my own” from the 10th anniversary concert as well.
This whole production of these performances of Les Mis is amazing
I remember seeing this performance and at the time Ms Lea had recently been playing Fantine on Broadway (if I remember correctly). I feel like she had some strain at the top to protect just like you picked up on and a year or so later, suddenly it all came back after some rest. More recent versions of this song have been crystal clear, just like the classic Lea sound. That last note though...
This is the 25th Anniversary Les Mis in Concert (not a movie version). It's my favorite cast!
PERFECT! That's Lea Salonga!
I felt the emotion more when she pulled her tongue. Sounds dark and more painful as the lyrics is supposed to be expressing.
YOU ARE SO NOISSSYYY.......
I always thought she did the tongue pull for effect because like you said she didn't "need" to. It always felt to me like she was creating the heartbreak and desperation in that sound. I really like your analysis style.
Have you ever broken down anything from the musical "Company"?
Lea is really good!!!
she does that (pulling the tongue backwards - operatic sounding) because she wants to sound like she's CRYING in the song.. because that part of the story was full of MISERY after what FANTINE had to experience in her life. so, it's intended and not by accident.
I don’t think she’s pulling her tongue back. When I hear her doing that I see that she’s adjusting her jaw to mix the vowel “e” with the “a”- vowel migration. It’s better than singing it nasal.
I love Lea Selonga. My friend's daughter Mia Jenkins was young Cosette in the 25th anniversary recording .. she's grown into such a beautiful talented young lady now. xx
Clearest diction of any singer; windex for the ears; music for the soul. I call her the dominos pizza of singers; she just delivers and delivers...
She's really a Disney Princess, Ms Saigon and Broadway. A whole new world, original version was sung by Brad Kane (Aladdin's singing voice) and Lea Salonga (Jasmine's singing voice) in 1992
She has a musicality that only she can pull off. Well the international awards says it all.
MRS. LEA SALONGA-CHIEN, YOU DROPPED THIS *👑*
pls react on her performance in miss saigon, specifically the "I'd give my life for you" song. I really love it, i could not think anything but my mother when i listen to it. Just requesting to remember our mother this Christmas.❤️
Yep, Lea is legendary in this arena. That is why she won award on this. 👍
Lea is so good I got 25th anniversary show on DVD it is worth watching it
This woman is queen. The. End.
Great video. Her facial reactions to what’s she’s singing add so much. Thanks for explaining the different ways you could sing a note/word.
Hi! Can you share the ref of your mic please 🙏 :)
She is a great singer. We love Ms Lea Salonga.
Look her face my dear, Lea Salonga is complete in the emotion, I'd say too into the emotion, that's why some sounds are not so pure but perfect interpretation anyway.. She's Lea Salonga a master singing and a legend in broadway, and in this interpretation she's amazing as always.
When you sing heheheh so far different
LEA is the mastery of technique
Phenomenal artist. I can safely say that's she's a living legend and a national treasure of the Philippines 🇵🇭. 👏
to be able to say that you played BOTH Eponine and Fantine.... i don't think anybody else has done so before. love Lea so much.
It was like she was at certain place and imagining the story.
Very proud of you miss lea salonga
She was won Best Actress in Musical Miss Saigon
This is one of my favorite versions of this song. The only one that i slightly prefer is Ruthie Henshall singing it at the 10th anniversary. Maybe you could react to that too :))
I love Lea and most of the time her renditions are the best for me, but yeah, I agree, that Ruthie has the best version of this piece.
Ruthie for me! Very raw and emotional
Léa was so good in Les Misérables.
That pup is so chill
Lea is absoutely superb in my opinion. And i have never been rong.
Ealing’s is simply making artistic choices, using her classical voice for certain notes over a metallic belt sound throughout…it’s called tonal colour
And the examples the coach here, herself is giving are pretty shrill sounding
Have you you performed in broadway and won awards too ?
I love Lea so much
Would you expect anything less from the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical and the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical Award Winner?
That little cutie pie in the background though... 😆
Lea Salonga the living legend ❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
My daughter's vocal coach who is a (theatre actress in the city) always referenced Leah Salonga in her classes. Every professional singer knows and admire the Leah Salonga.
for us lea perfectly performed no body's perfect you sing madam judgemental we judge u too
This reactor just pretends to be superior so she can sell singing lessons to fools. She will even search the Internet for weak performances so she can pretend to be superior
At this point, I’m curious what voice you find acceptable. If you’re not happy with Lea, is it even possible for you to happy at all?
This was the 25th Anniversary from Les miz.
How do you transition 1:27 voice?
