  • Sochin is an advanced kata that is very often performed in tournaments. It is a powerful kata with strong stances. This video explains each move of the kata step-by-step.

    Thank you. That is an excellent explanation, and the video is very well presented. I especially appreciate your focus on the stance; Sochin is as you say "all about the stance," but nowhere else can I find as good a description of what exactly that means.

    when kata was put together in days gone by especially the old and the ancient ones. they did not have the internet, or dvd players or television. The kata is and is not a dance. it is a dance in that it has choreographed movements - a dance of death. For the movements of the kata carry within it both obvious things and not so obvious things. Layers of information so that the kata is in essence your note book. Each of the traditional katas have infinite insights into what is karate.

    Thank you sensei for all your lectures on Katas. Your lectures have helped me a lot. Especially when my sensei teaches me a new kata and I practice that new kata alone for the first time. If any confusion arises, I refer to your kata lectures. One small request from my side. Please can Yip upload a lecture based on Nijushiho kata ? Thank you sensei. Osu.

    • @distinctloafer

      Yeah you should keep that to yourself, because that was extra as hell. Like even the smallest of mistakes you can't let go. People like you who like to knitpick, are just trying to too hard to prove yourself. What good are there if you said that? So that he could time travel back to 7 years ago to change that? And issued a formal letter of apology to all his viewers? Oh and you try to act like you wanna point that while being humble? That's just call humblebrag about your belt rank? Everyone knows that. "Oh Im no expert, but I just practiced for 10 years, that's all, and ain't that a beginner mistake? Idk I said Im not an expert."

    all stances are good. all stances are transisional in that you are not standing there like a statue. All stances is the basis of footwork and other tehniques fir example when you are performing a front kick you are also performing two stances - cat and crane. as for kumite, in theory you should be able to learn how to adapt to fight in any stance and in any position since the enemy will not wait to attack you - he will attack at any time or moment or enviroment.

    That stance he does in the beginning, is that fudo dachi, or sochin dachi, I here they are the same yet some say they are different, can someone please clarify this?

    • @Salsmachev
      @Salsmachev 6 років тому

      They are interchangeable names, but there are three variants of the stance. One version is horse stance but diagonal, one is like horse stance plus back stance, and the third variant is like horse stance plus front stance. Any of those three can be called by either name.

      Acording to my sensei
      Sochin dachi = diagonal kiba dachi
      Fudo dachi = its a combination between zenkutsu-dachi and kiba-dachi (front leg do zenkutsu dachi, back leg do a kiba-dachi)

    WHY? May of the technical elements you mentioned must be important for bunkai purposes rather than aesthetic ones (this is after all karate not dance)
    Student with a western mind (or a modern mind in general) do not want to do anything with out a reason now you could say "learn the moves then figure out the meaning - that the karate way " - ok - not all - but show us some at least what your being so specific about
    many instructor have been too particular with movements without understanding
