Working on learning morse code myself. I like that you set the expectations at a reasonable level and point out that we all learn at our own speed. Thanks for putting this together. 73
Just what a needed a pep talk ;) President Kennedy's quote about going to the moon always helps me. Paraphrasing here: "We choose to do these things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one we are will to accept."

I know folks who want instant results. I told one guy that if he listened everyday for 30 days, he would be amazed what he had learned. He drives for a living, and could easily listen while driving. He told me 30 days was too long. That was 5 years ago..he would be just fine now, if he tried...
Sage advice, as always Keith. Hard for most of us to accept a 20-30% failure rate, but it really is good enough. And, there is always the "?" ready to employ!
77 years old, been at it over a year. Don't go on air because, while I've memorized the letters and numbers, I cannot follow text (unless there is a LOT of space between the letters). I immediately am two words behind and, therefore, don't get most of the message. copying the other guy's/gal's code is impossible if I can't keep up. They say contests are a great chance to improve your CW. Too fast--don't even get their call signs, much less their "sections." I'm at the point where I want to give it up. But I set a goal and insist on reaching it. CW is supposed to be fun. It's not fun until you master it. back to work.
Hi George. I understand your frustration. I first took cw in 1988 and we memorized letters numbers etc. Didn't touch it again until 2022 when I restarted and tried learning on my own. I was 74 then. WE now teach not to memorize but to listen to the sound of the letter. go to this link longislandcwclub.org/ read the academic info and then click the practice page link. That page is free to use. Send me an email at ve3svq@gmail.com and i can explain further and answer your questions.
Just for fun go to this page. longislandcw.github.io/morsebrowser/ Go to Instructor BC1 REA try the individual letters. Then do REA familiarity and familiarity under presets and hit play

@@timsmith428 yes. Effort is needed and realistic expectations over the short term.
Great. advice Keith, struggling but I'm sure ill get there in the end.
We all can get there and it can be a struggle at times but we know it is possible.

I can't quit, I have invested too many decades into learning it. Give me another decade and I hope I will get it.
@@PaulK7VIQ you can do it!
My reward QMX has been ordered.
@@PaulK7VIQ I plan on getting a nice cw key when I'm done with BC2
I'm 86, don't have sufficient tonal memory. Decided I would rather do something else with the time I have on this earth.

Sadly, you have just stated all the reasons I have given up.
Now you have some solutions and how to overcome them too
