I was just like this on my holiday trip to Korea!! Everyone I asked helped me, even old ladies and people that didn’t know any English, not one person refused to help me, I felt so welcomed!!
Once I asked for the subway to a couple of school girls and they told me the directions, 3 minutes later as I was walking I heard running behind me, it was them running to tell me they had given me the directions to the sandwich shop and not to the metro station lol then they went out of their way to walk me to the metro… Korean people are really helpful and nice, I really liked your country!

외국어라는게 잠깐의 쪽팔림만 견뎌내면 그 다음은 쉽더라구요. 일본에서 10년정도 살고있는데 맨 처음에 일본어 못할때 겁먹고 괜히 웃음거리가 되지 않을까 그런생각이 들었는데 오히려 일본어가 서툴다는걸 아니까 본인들이 배려해주고 반대로 한국어번역으로 보여주기도 하고... 그러면서 자신감을 얻었던거 같습니다.
외국어는 정말로 자신감. 띄엄띄엄 말하더라도 한마디 한마디 해보다보면 긴장풀리고 잘해질겁니다.
눈치 안보는게 진짜 중요하다는 거에 동감합니다

영어는 만국 공통어라서 그런것 아닐까요 중국이나 일본여행가서 영어로 소통될때가 많고, 프랑스나 독일등등 여행갔을때 그나라말 대신 영어 쓰면 편하죠 ㅎㅎ
영어는 전세계 공용어이고 반면 우리말은 아직 널리 알려져있지 않아서 그런것 같아요

Do Koreans treat people from southeast Asia who speak English the same way and ask them for help??
Sometimes it becomes a sensitive topic on some social media that Korean people don't care about people from Southeast Asia who ask for help :( *But I'm sure there are still many good people there*

If you look like a foreigner (including Southeast Asian) , speaking English as a tourist, they will treat you as a foreigner and be nice. Some Koreans just avoid foreigners because they are afraid of English 😅
It is true that Koreans sometimes discriminate South East Asians, South Asians, and Chinese. If you live in Korea, you may encounter mean racist people. But most Koreans treat foreigners as foreigners. If you speak a little Korean (hi, thank you), Koreans will like you and be nice to you.
Koreans will be mean if you are rude or behave badly (ex. Throw trash, violent, loud talk, disrespectful, harassing women) . It’s easy to misunderstand each others’ behavior.
Young people usually have better manners and will help you . Older people can look rude, but some older people can be really sweet, so it’s hit or miss with older people 😂. Women tend to be nicer and more helpful.
@@yj8641I am a South East Asian woman, from Europe. I travelled/hiked 4 weeks in Korea and only older people came to talk to me even tho they don’t even speak English. I was amazed by two of them (60 and 70) they could speak and understand basic English.
Some of them were extravert and very fun to be around. I found them nicer and helpful.
Sadly, many youngsters were a bit cold, arrogant (especially girls) or avoiding contact.
@@Kyeuti I understand what you mean. Young Koreans, especially young girls, look cold, indifferent, and even snobbish. I’m a middle-aged Korean woman (ahjumma 😅), and I feel that way too so I Dont talk to young people either 😂 I think they think it is rude to show interest in other people… my daughter feels very annoyed at older people looking at her or talking to her 🥲.
Older people tend to have less manners but some of them are very curious about foreigners and friendly. Young Koreans don’t approach foreigners - they think it’s rude or not cool. However, if you ask for help, young people are more likely to be more helpful.
If you talk to older people, some may enjoy chatting with you. Most Young people Dont chat with strangers.

But was frustrated not to be able to interact with young people just out of curiosity. I thought « why do they avoid me, they are cold and full of themselves » 😅 Thanks for the explanation for strangers. That makes sense and I get it.
« Snobish » as you said, exactly what I thought 🤣 Some girls were giving me some weird look (like they think they are prettier or maybe that’s just my imagination 😅) I never experienced this before in any country but I understand that apparence (being pretty, wearing nice clothes) is very important in Korean society.
A few times, I tried to explain my experience and some Koreans were harsh with awful stereotypes (and sometimes racist) towards South East Asians. As you said, there are good and bad people. I met some nice Koreans during my trip. I hope to visit again. I really appreciate your open mindednesses and kindness.
