  • On episode 52 of She's with the Band, the show that aims to amplify the voices of women and femme people on stage, backstage, and in the business, host Tori Kravitz chats with Tatiana Shmayluk, the iconic front-woman of Ukrainian progressive metalcore heroes Jinjer.
This conversation goes far and wide covering how Tatiana writes and where her inspirations come from in art, Jinjer's recently released live album recorded in Los Angeles, and teasers for some brand new music to come later this year. She also discusses being back in Europe to record vocals, the band's journey throughout their now 16 year existence, and her social anxieties.

Tati is such a sweetheart. I'm glad her mother is ok considering the war going on directly in her hometown.

The front line is only about a kilometer away from the city but other than the occasional strike on a military warehouse it's unlikely that city will ever be a center of fighting thankfully.

The thing that I love the most about Tatiana is that she is such a real person: the way she talks, being sometimes a little shy, talking about insecurities, etc. You can really relate with her

I didn’t know I could love Tatiana more than I already did. I love how real she is saying she loves her cat more than her husband and that she doesn’t like to go out. So relatable!

Little does Tatiana know, just being as honest and genuine as she is about who/how she is, is being all the role model that anyone can ask for.

Great interview. I think the fans can probably answer the question about live vs studio. Max Morton Jinjer's engineer/producer is great and the albums sound great but there is an energy that the live stuff brings that you just can't duplicate in the studio.
The band is careful about the use of tracks which I appreciate but the other thing that lends well to keeping it from being "copy/paste" is that Tatiana never sings the same song the same way. You notice this if you are on one of the fan pages and see everyone's video recording of their night at the Jinjer concert during a tour. A fan might love every note and nuance in the video of Perennial at Wacken in 2019 but chances are pretty good she has never sang that song the same way despite literally hundreds of shows where she has done that song since. Most of the time it's her singing as she feels at the time, some times it might be that she just ran 50 feet across a giant stage and is out of breath so she sings a note shorter than she otherwise would but it's still different. Way better than singers who just stand there like a potato and sing.

32:33 for those who don't know, the novel she is talking about which was the inspiration of their song 'Pausing Death' is 'Death with Interruptions' (As Intermitências da Morte) written by the Portuguese Nobel Laureate, José Saramago.

Her social anxiety is a product of isolation. That is caused by being cut off from society. I'm mostly an introvert. It was having a very negative effect on my life. I went from being married for 22 years to 8 years, in which I was isolated for two by the pandemic. I had a nervous breakdown. I'm finally starting to emerge from a very dark place.
I love Ginjer❤ what a great band! I sympathize with Tatiana.

I can relate to Tati when she said that with being sober (I'm almost 3 years sober myself) and not having the courage at hand in the form of a bottle, it's harder to speak so easily from when intoxicated. Can't wait for the new music to be released!!❤❤

I love sharing this Jinjer story of mine:
I believe it was the video premiere for Mediator. The band was doing a FB live video before they released it and were responding to fans comments. I was watching and happened to notice Roman just zoned out, in his own little world, and I wrote "Is Roman stoned? He looks so stoned!". A minute goes by at the most and the next thing I know, I hear Eugene REPEAT my comment out loud and the WHOLE band burst out laughing. Roman goes, "No. I wish, but no.". 😂

Hmmm are we gonna get a 19th century multi-part epic Jinjer suite? I'm here for it! Jinjer unplugged? Yeah! Symphonic Jinjer! Bring it on!
Her favorite songs are some of mine too. Pearls and Swine, Pausing Death, Noah may be deep cuts but they all stand out to me. Pausing Death is the hidden gem of the album for me.
I've often wondered if she'd benefit from working with Melissa Cross. She says "No, I need!" Somebody hook those two up! I want to be hearing new Jinjer albums decades from now!
Aha! She says she's spending June recording vocals! And she's "gonna be fine." Thanks for the"little snack!" Trust in your method, girl!

There're few (a lot of, actually) reaction channels where a classical musicians make a deep dive into metal and other popular music. The Charismatic Voice is a perfect example.
Listening to Tatiana came to mind that there're not as much reaction channels where a metal musicians make a deep dive into classical music. At best, they listen to a few of the most popular classical pieces and that's it. Nobody could tell that he's "diving into Chaykovsky's rabbit hole".
And that's a pity. I guess if someone like Tatiana'd manage the reaction channel with this kind of content many people would like to make that dive with her.

If you write songs for a living it's not a good idea to listen to a lot of the newest stuff in the genre you write for. You would be surprised how many metal musicians don't listen to the same music the fans do. The only bands that can do that are cover bands.
