oh yeah, you gotta get schwifty in order to properly program a 7 axis cnc robot arm mill (or whatever is the actual name of it) :)
At my uni we actually have a group working on calculating and counteracting cutting forces, to increase these robot's capability in metals. There's a lot to come... merry christmas!

Any way I can follow what this group is doing? Just started thinking about building my own 7 axis (hopefully) metal capable, machine. However there ain't much info out there on arm style metal milling

building from scratch you need kind of degree of engineering
there are reasons for that less than a dozen name exist manufacturing robots
yet you can buy arms with high payload and try to milling metal
however by its nature the robot arm will not yielding on metal
then a gantry style 5 axis with rotary will be more precise..

I have a great passion for learning all kinds of new things in many different areas. So I spend tons of time online researching these things.
Because of this, I see these kinds of responses in the DIY communities all the time.
Basically, If you didn't pay a school to learn it. Then you can not do it.
Do not try, Because you are not capable.
This type of thinking is arrogant and discusting.
If a person feels that they are capable and they have the time and finances to do so.
Go for it.
Do not let anyone convince you that you are not capable simply because a school didn't give you a piece of paper deeming you smart enough to try.

I have a question.
Here in Germany, you go 10 years to school for becoming a Zerspanungsmechaniker (Mechanics who work with lathes and CNC and oder small stuff).
After you finish 10th grade, you go 3 years to a work-school while practicing the stuff you lern there in a real company.
After those 10 years of normal school and 3 years of work-school you are finally allowed ro work and make money.
Here my questions:
How long do you have to go to school in the US to become a CNC mechanist? Do you learn in a company right away or do you visit 'work-school'? How long do you learn this job? And do you learn 3/4/5 Axis?

It really depends on your attitude, skill and opportunity. Someone who takes Machining in high school can possibly walk right into a operator / set up job where they are getting paid. But then they have to learn on the job or attend an industrial school to up their skills.
I personally walked into a machine shop for $9 an hour with no skills. 2 years later I was making $28 and hour and was the shop supervisor.
Just depends on your skill and where you work.
I went to a school that was 6 months long. The school set you up with a job. By a year in i was making really good money. But over half the class wasn't working as mechanist by that time. Freedoms to succeed is also freedom to fail. It's all about your attitude and willing to learn.

Can I speak to the guy that programs Bethany, the robotic arm? Mainly what kind of math. If a was to design my own robotic arm that could machine the toughest of metal's. It would have around 96 motors. Coordination all that would be insane, but it would be capable of moving the tool tip at any angle, you wouldn't even need to rotate the work, but it would be more energy efficient if you did

Bethany is not a seven-axis but a six-axis robot with an external one. In regards to KUKA, the option to control the robots movement along the external axis is done by pressing of any of the A's on the touch screen panel. Then a small menu opens which contains three options, control of all six robot axes, control of the external axis and I forgot what is the third option in that menu. This is the KR Quantec model, which particular model from that line I do not know.

Hey titan, what is the reason you are starting to use powermill? We use both fusion 360 and powermill in our shop. We are in windsor ON Canada, where powermill is necessary because of all the complex molds built here. From what I've seen in your videos though you guys do mainly aerospace work. I've heard that a lot of ppl prefer fusion for that kind of work.
Fusion is not ITAR yet... so I wanted to add in high level Aerospace tutorials. PowerMill is great for 5th Axis and MutliAxis contouring

To hold work piece, like tooling board of 400-1200kg/m3, we use Tesa 4965 double-sided tape. Crazy strong, just a few pieces 100x50mm per 500x500 piece is normally enough. Use acetone and syringe to soften it and remove using a wooden wedge.

Not exactly sure... it repeats good but he does deal with having to get beyond chatter though since the Spindle is way out on a limb... 😂

you are not alone dude.
You're an inspiration. I use to sling metal, ran three machines at a time, kept the spindles turning, and no scrap parts. Always tried to be the hardest worker in the shop. I was injured and lost my ability to kick butt as a set up operator. From watching your videos I'm considering honing my programming skills and staying in the trade. Thanks for giving me hope. Mahalo

I can program that thing by hand off the top of my head.
CNC and robot programming has become too easy these days. You load up your cad model, into your favorite software package, set a few tool path and tool options, and send it to your post processor that generates your G code. I can understand that this saves time and money, but engineering skills are not quite what they was back in the day when lathes and mills where programmed with the aid of a calculator, zeus book and the engineering drawing.
in school i did a little bit, not that much, a little pure g code programming. and i gotta say, shit takes huge amounts of time. and this was just in some 3 axis mills and 2 axis lathes. and the mathematics involved can very quickly become really advanced. just think of a 7 axis mill how god damn crazy mathematic that involves.
