Why did they have to have kid actors for this movie? The best thing about the first film was how the pilots were OLDER people. They were prior military or something like that. They had REAL experience and actually looked the part of a giant robot pilot. No one is going to believe these kids can operate effectively in a combat situation. Especially vs huge monsters.

I would watch pacific rim again in theaters, if they play the first movie! The first movie was so very awesome!
Pacific Rim is #2 behind only Avatar on the list of movies which I would still to this day pay full new-release price to see in a theater (with or without 3D). An absolute visual masterpiece which really requires a big screen to do justice to (although having a pause button is also nice).
The fact that I didn't get the chance to watch this movie in theaters angers me, didn't get the time and I regret it a lot. I would pay any amount today to get the chance to watch it in a theatre

I mean the first one had a closed ending which didn't set up for a sequel and I think that Guillermo del Toro wanted to let this be a one time experience. Aright first of all, I'm not gonna lie the fight scenes look awesome and I'll be cheering at every one of them. But one of the biggest loses I think this movie has, is that it doesnt have the one thing that makes the scene from the first one work so well. *Weight.*
The Jagers from the first movie seem to move so slow, like they are *actual giant robots* that has to cover some *actual distance* to deliver even a single punch. Even though they move so slowly, it's all worth it when the punch actually came in contact with the Kaiju because when that punch hits you can just *feel* how heavy it was, how damaging that single blow was to the Kaiju.
These new Jagers seem to move so fast and yeah their weapons look cool and all, but it's a shame that the impact is gone.
The first movie was brilliant, it's gritty and realistic, but it toes the edge of sci-fi too. It gives off the feel of a world capable of having robotic limbs and flying cars but also drug deals in an alley and murder in an abandoned parking lot.
I don't know what to expect from this movie, but I hope we can still see the alley ways in this sci-fi world.
*EDIT:* For the record let me say this for the people that commented this over and over again. It is not that I dont understand *why* the Jagers are so much more light in this sequel, what I'm saying is that *the weight that we see in the first movie REALLY sold it to not just me, but a way more wider audiance and it is a shame that we cant see that again in this movie*

I disagree. We see some Jeagers moving slowly, while some are fast. Missile dodge scene- slow; small jeager breaking out- really fast; red, thin Jeager kicking something- fast; bulky Jeager walking and shooting- really slow. It seems as if every mech is its own entity, with their own speed, saber one faster than whip one, whip one faster than cannon one, cannon one faster than giant-spiky-ball-of-doom one- and that's just the closing scene, there are much more to compare. In the first movie we mostly saw one Jeager, and I love Gypsy Danger, but they all mostly looked, felt and attacked the same. Now they are much more diversified, as if they were build to work in team, not alone, or on specific task- which is propably exactly what they were made for.
You nailed it. Even going back to the kind of source material that inspired this series, there was always such a palpable difference between, say, Big O and Gundam. Slow, ponderous movements - thousands of tons of metal. Steps that shake the earth. Just a few extra seconds of animation can multiply the cinematic impression of the same motion. I remember when I watched the first film in theaters and feeling like my guts were about to rattle out every time the Gypsy Danger landed a solid hit. It was so cool!

Yup. It's lacking in style and color. The first film had a ton of colors, especially since a majority of it took place at night. Here everything looks bland and doesn't stand out that well.

I think it's due to more day time scenes than the first one which had more night time scenes that had neon lights that big cities have during that time. Neon lights of course wouldn't be seen during the day.

My favorite example of this from the first movie was when Raleigh piloted the injured Gipsy Danger to shore by himself. The sequence of the Jaeger collapsing onto the beach was breathtaking.

Damian Bear they didnt look like superhéroes and even if this things are massive robots they have a sence of scale and at a certain point, proper physiscs, a sence of scale, that this things are huge and heavy move slow and take a while for every turn for every move
i can't say anything of this one because i havent seen any complete battle just some preparing and one or two battle scenes that last like 1 or 2 seconds but by the look it appears that they lost the sence of scale in the battles

Did you see that Jäger running through the wall. The speed alone is more than any metal could ever endure. The movements in part 1 were slow and always a bit delayed. You could see the weight in the movement.

The Jaegers looks like Hasbro child's toys. It's pretty obvious why, that's kinda sad. I liked the "darker theme" of the 1st one.
JustSomebody nah the darker theme won't work again. That was a time when humans were overwhelmed and overpowered. Now we can see humans can stand up to kaijus, hence the music and cool new advanced jeagers.
It doesn't help that every single Jaeger design presented in this trailer is unbelievably dull, overly complicated, uninspired and unimaginative as all hell to look at compared to the Jaegers in the first film.

I think they're definitely shooting for the Power Rangers audience with this version. Marketing it to a younger audience. The bulk of the shots are during the day and the jaegers look less gritty/detailed, more like toys. They're all lined up like they're about to combine up into a megazord.

Stefan Hoffmeister I don't understand how people can connect minds and for giant monsters to exist and for these robots to not be crushed under their own weight. It's a movie. It's the future.
Cure Hime Productions suspension of disbelief only carries a futuristic movie so far. To alot of people it seems that the fluent movement is too far. To me it seems like the fluent movement itself isnt the issue here. The camera work itself in combination with the way they move makes the machines look like tiny toys in a toy city. And since the fanbase got very attached to the ideas of giant lumbering machines powered by onboard nuclear reactors, this kind of seems to destroy a core concept of the franchise. That is what i think people are actually complaining about when they say the movement is too fluent.
I'm fairly certain they just sped up footage in the action scenes. The scene where Gypsy (eureka?) punches his palm looks very similar to the first film where the wind up is very slow with a kind of quick strike. They probably just sped up certain scenes to look cooler to potential viewers. Also the canon weights and heights of jaegers constantly change and is very inconsistent, so a real way to determine how fast they could hit is completely impossible.

I recently watched the first one for the first time and was blown away by how good it was and how long it took me to watch the film. I later found out del toro wasn’t apart of the second film sooo nah I’m good
You aren't missing much. The second one lacks everything that made the first one great
Pacific Rim 1 is better than Godzilla and Skull Island, and the cheesy dialogue makes it even more authentic Kaiju movie coupled with mecha anime. I mean, Godzilla wasn't terrible, but in a monster movie, I wanna see more monsters and less human military subplots. Pacific Rim had the drama DURING the battles, inside of the cockpits. Perfect!

Almost all the original Godzilla films focused mainly on the humans in the world of the Kaiju. Even if that's what they were like, the Godzilla franchise still became a worldwide phenomenon for more than 60 years.
It just look really really animated. The first one was very raw and realistic. Nonetheless. Still hyped for it.

I really enjoyed the first film, and this one looks like it would be fun to watch, and have tons of cool scenes, but definitely not as good as the first. I mainly liked the first film because it had an awesome idea, but was still grounded in reality because it had an industrial and gritty feel to it. This one looks more like a brightly coloured power rangers or new transformers kind of thing, with the ridiculous weapons and faster movements of the Jaggers. They are making a common mistake, thinking that if people like this one thing, making it bigger/more of it, it will be even better. Wrong. These Robots are supposed to be big, hulking machines, with disadvantages and like something humans might be able to actually make. All in all, I think the Pacific rim classic will always be a great stand alone movie, they don't need this.
(Some of the stuff like the missile was cool though)

Without Guillermo del Toro at the head of this movie i think it's safe to say that the fans of the first one will be desapointed.
That is not to say that this movie will be garbage, we'll just have to see, but i don't think it has been made with the same dedication that the first one. Pacific Rim one was a movie wich just felt like a big love letter to all of the old school monster movies. This new movie looks like it missed that. It's too bright, it's too hopefull, too... doll. I see a lot of people referencing the transformers and the power rangers, and i think they're right. I cared for the futur and the well being of the caracters of the first one because even if i the plot was kind of stupid it was well made and i wanted to believe it. There is no stakes at hand in this one so there is no fear for the caracters . And teenagers... seriously what the hell... i know there is monsters and robots but that don't mean you should aim at kids!
I guess i should wait and see, maybe it's just the trailer that give this feeling, the movie could be different. But unfortunatly i don't think so. Well anyway, fingers crossed!

yeah, when I first saw the teenagers being the Pilots I was like, wtf? this bunch of kids can't be the pilots of this Jagers. the first thing a pilot should have to become a pilot was basically be a war veterans, know when to back off and when to charge forward. this kids don't even have their license yet...

Yep, dude, me too. I don't like how they do kung-fu moves with those robots, which probably would weigh like a bajillion tons or so. I haven't seen the first one in quite a while, but if I remember correctly, they just walked, shot and punched things, without going all Transformers.
A prequel to the first one might've been a better idea, but maybe this one will surprise me.
