The goes a lot further than you think, almost to the end of the handle. Yeah you levered the blade on the finger guard and snapped the tang. ua-cam.com/video/IjTpcaO8rk4/v-deo.html here you see how long the tang is.

One thing to note.. I know this is an older vid, but when the blade originally came loose, you were hitting the spine while the guard was resting on the log(and making divots in that log from the force). You may not have experienced the same failure at that point had you moved the knife further back so that the handle didn't come in contact with the log you were using as support.
That was pretty extreme, it was pretty funny how it was sortove being driven into the log.
They’re a cheap and sharp knife, I’ve seen them break in lots of videos with less. Honestly I’m not sure some more expensive knives would hold up to batoning.
That's what I noticed too. Guessing that's when he truly broke the Tang.
@@Jason-bd5iq it really is, unless you go with full tang knives(even then they do break on occasion) the possibility of it breaking is almost always there, lets be realistic.

Just found this channel. I got my first morakniv, companion HD. Sharpest knife I've ever owned.
tbh, if you hadnt hit the handle or leveraged the guard against the wood while cross batoning, its unlikely it would have broken. thats a lot of leverage your applying to the weakest point of the knife using two different techniques. when cross batoning, make sure the guard has clearance to not hit the surface your batoning on. when split batoning, hold the handle in your hand, hit only the blade tip like your doing in the begenning, and dont wrench on the handle and especially dont hit the handle to get it unstuck. you could do that all day without a problem. I would honestly call this more user error than the knife failing, i used to baton the old 1/3 tang clippers for years and only ever had one break, you just have to use the right techniques.
True but he did release a video confirming that his assessment of the tang was wrong and even admitted that the test was unrealistic and pushed the boundary of what you should test but imo this shows how tough a budget knife like the 511 is still durable and within the realm of proper usage its unlikely the blade tang will ever break. As testing goes sometimes its good to push stress testing to extremes to see limits all i know is for the money this is a hard fixed blade to beat.
Just a little detail which you didn't get quite right:
When you compare the Mora Companion to the Pro 511 you state the Companion's blade is thicker than the one of the 511. This is only true for the stainless steel Companion which has a 2.5mm thick blade. The Companion carbon steel has a 2.0mm thick blade like the Pro 511. Mora uses a thicker blade on the stainless steel Companion to compensate for the reduced toughness of their 12C27 stainless steel compared to the C100 used for the carbon model.

I don't think the issue was the batoning itself, but the guard sitting on the stump when cutting through branches. That probably caused the stress fractures, that made it break in the end. Saw a guy break a Bushcraft Black the same way.
As You said this is knife is more of a work knife than a bushcraft knife.
Still, it's a credit to Mora, that this failure wasn't as dangerous as it could have been.

Türk, correct. But also that last piece he was going through had wonky grain and a huge knot. That would have been tough with a hatchet. That’s the problem with batoning and why so many people think you shouldn’t do it with any knife: splitting little bits of wood or cutting through green wood with little taps is perfectly acceptable to do with any fixed blade. People just need to remember ITS NOT AN 8LB SPLITTING MAUL!!

You hit the nail on the head. At 4:04 when he broke the blade the guard was sitting and therefore pressed against the stump. So it's NOT just the force required to chop through the small branch that broke it, but the excessive force pounding on the spine of the blade against the guard on the stump!
My very first Mora was a 511, which I purchased, in no small part, because I couldn't believe A) that people were making all this fuss was about these cheap, ugly knives, and B) that anything that cheap ($8) could be worth anything. I still have that 511. I've put it through a LOT of wood, not just carving, but also batoning (smaller, and presumably softer wood than that red gum, which looks half-a-step from petrified). I've also seen others do BRUTAL things that I would never have considered to 511's with no ill effects, so I suspect you got the runt of the litter.
The guard was being pounded into the log, something that would damage a more heavily built knife eventually.
Love the bushcraft black, tough and durable but easy to use for fine work. Great knife

It just occurred to me that since we all seem to agree that the rat tail blade snapped inside the handle when the finger guard kept hitting the stump while you were cutting the branch - it’s actually amazing that it was still locked into the handle enough to allow you to keep slicing and batoning more wood. Sure would like to see a re-test without the oddball finger guard induced snap.
My companion goes with me more than any fixed blade. I love it but won't lose sleep if I lose it or do something silly and wreck it.

Hey brotha. Used a magnet. And contacted mora. Bother show that the tang goes way further back into the grip. About 2/3 into the handle. I believe yours snapped somewhere in there. You should cut the grip to find out.

I batoned my 511 once through some fairly big fire wood (because I didn't have anything else with me) and I worked out ok! That being said I agree it's not a good idea.
I threw one on a bladhq order, just as a general purpose shop knife. I'm not expecting hard use, cutting twine, cord, rope, opening boxes, the odd carving job. Maybe one day it will be upgraded, maybe not. A basic (sharp) knife is all I need.
These are great knives, but don’t expect a “sharpened pry bar “ as some are inclined to do. ALWAYS carry more than one knife in the woods.

You got to know the limits of this amazing compact Mora.
Of course it is not a batonning tool, you can baton with it, but it should be only small woods, and you have to do it a more proper way (blade always the most perpendicular as possible to the log).

the knife failed because you wailed on the blade, thinking your trying to get through the wood, but the handle was on the wood, so you were just pounding the handle into the wood by banging on the blade.
You can get these for 5€ in German Home Depot stores…. A friend of mine has 12 of them in every room and vehicle a few… :D
Thanks Pete I had always assumed it was the exact same blade as the companion just with a cheaper handle I had no idea it was thinner.

It's a 4$ knife. If you ask me it's really an amazing and robust knife for the price you pay. Comes razor sharp out of the factory and you get an ok sheath. Here in Sweden you can get them for as low as 3$. Can't beat that price it's literally the price of two Swedish beers

Did you see that Real Steel has a new survival knife called the Bushcraft Plus? It is one awesome looking knife, it comes in a high scandi and also a flat grind, I will let you know what I think here soon.
Love this knife I just needed it to match my takle box so when I'm fishing it looks nice and can be used to cut string and on acasion make a carve a stick in free time

I always keep one or two Mora basics around to lend out to people who ask for a knife. The edge geometry, steel quality and overall sturdyness is great and I have some that have seen much much worse abuse than shown in this video and are still going strong after years. Also I got them all for 5€ each. Everybody who sometimes lends out knives should have some.

Great stuff Peter, I was looking at getting one of these or do you think it makes more sense to just get the Companion HD, price isn't that big of a jump. Just gonna have it as a knife when I'm going any where like the beach or hiking just to have a good blade on me.

The Mora knife is typical variant of the Scandinavian type of knives. Built for everyday work and tasks in the woods. I have been using these types of knives for most of my life, and it feels a bit funny when I see these reviews on UA-cam. In Sweden Moras are a natural part of life, and when people in other parts of the world see the practicality of 'our' knives it's just odd. It's like watching people finding a new faith for the first time. I guess the Nepalese feel the same thing about their Khukuris and the popularity they have gained in the world...
That didn't look like a small tang, that looks like a snapped tang. Forgot about the other video, looks like you corrected that statement.
What are some of your favorite full-tang knives nowadays if I do want something a lil more robust without a huge blade?
Say Heah Cedric, I personally like the Mora 510, Infact it's one of my Fav. Neck Knives. If you L@@k closely at the blade profile you will see it identical to the classic #1. That being said, I like the handle better in that case. I also like the fact the new ones are thinner so they slice better. That's exactly what I want as a neck knife. A cutter.,,. p
was watching an older video on Mora's an it was particularly noted and shown with a magnet the tang on the 511 came 3/4 of the way to the back of the handle, not this was the older style 511 not the one with the pro handle, Did Mora start skimping with the steel when the y gave us the new great pro-shaped handle? I like the old design better in thew hand anyway. The video was two years before this one by preparmind101.

You could always make it into a opinel style folding knite quite easy after you hroke it, steel is heat treated quite well afterall🤷🙏
They may well be a good budget knife but if you use knives a lot they aren't as cost effective as one might think. Better to invest a little more. For me the bargain of the year is the Terava 110. A bigger knife, and does things differently but for Bushcrafty work its more than x10 better and will last more than x10 too. So in my mind a better investment.
Sometimes specialised tools are required and here Mora does do some great items. I have a good few Moras but they are not my choice if I want to do a general Bushcraft knife. Been there and broke them too frequently when pushing them beyond what they should do, but then I needed to do more and thats all I had. So great knives but know their limitations because they do have plenty of limitations.

I've got the stainless version of this with the blue handle. I use it as a guinea pig knife for when I want to test out new stones/sharpeners. Didn't realize the tang on this guy was so short
+subroc yeah i was quite suprised when i pulled it out and it was this small! Not needing it any bigger i guess but i estimated half way at least!
I dunno, I'm quite alarmed at how short it is. It's no wonder yours shook loose from the handle. It's definitely a good thing to know. At only a few bucks difference, there's really no reason not to go for the Companion over this every time.
Oh, and I don't know if you're still using your wife's DSLR or you've got your new camera, but the picture quality is way improved. Particularly the stuff at 3:43 struck me as really pretty
+subroc yeah I think i might stick on this while I save up for a 4k handycam. All the youtubers I admire primarily use DSLRs it turns out (i just assumed everyone still bought handycams but apparently they aren't mainstream anymore at all!? - I really gotta learn this suff!)
Cedric & Ada Gear and Outdoors Just about every time I see some video and think "ooh that's real nice" and see what camera they are using it turns out to be a Canon dslr. And I don't think it is just that people who know their shit buy them, because I've seen people who I'm pretty sure don't know what they are doing make poorly shot but otherwise beautifully rich crispy/buttery video. My wife's camera is a Sony NEX-5R which does alright, it's strength is its fairly compact size as it is a mirrorless dslr, it has a lcd viewfinder only so doesn't need so much internal glass and bits. The video function on the Sony is not as convenient as a JVC camcorder, but I hear that the Canon interface is more geared toward video. A big part of the whole deal is having the different lenses and knowing how to use them. I've only watched some tutorials, I haven't been able to justify getting the lenses, but a macro lens would serve you very well and it is useful for more than just close ups. The Sony NEX use a proprietary lens type that is smaller than the standard ones. I gather there is better variety, and better value in the standard lenses they'd use on a big Canon.
I am just way too scared to take a DSLR outside of my backyard, let alone the crazy lenses that you can get! I think it'll be this DLSR for stump top and indoors stuff but a nice fairly flash camcorder for my outdoor stuff.

I think its hit and miss ive had mine 10 yrs and although i have never used it to baton i have put it through hell and to cant tell what it it any more but still going
Are all morakniv tangs that small or is it just the basic line? Besides the garburg I mean.
Mt. Baldwin on the companion it goes halfway and on the bushcraft series it goes 3/4s. The really low cost moras like this one have the small tangs :)
My morakniv blunted the tip after staving into wood one time.... Fail.
Picked up 2 of these off Amazon 8 dollar's each.
The 511 is the knife everyone have in their pocket at work here in sweden. Its a cheap beater. When it gets dull or break we just throw it away and get a new one. Handy little tool for sure.

Look up a tool called a froe you'd be shocked to find out people used to baton with knives designed for splitting wood into boards cause an axe can't make a controlled cut the same way a froe can consistently.

You smacked the handle! No wonder it broke. Probably you'd have been fine if you'd have just pounded on the blade. But as you say, it's a $10 knife.

You broke bout an inch off the tang seen someone break it at the same point then he cut the handle open to show exactly where it broke

All I would say, is show what it CAN do, not what it obviously can’t. No one is gonna baton that small knife.
That's not a realistic test. The protruding guard was resting right on the stump. This is a craft knife, not a bushcraft or hard use knife.

I don't think Mora uses 1095 steel (or 1085) for their carbon steel blades.
I had read that Mora used UHB-20C for their carbon blades. However, according to this Morakniv website, the Companion MG Carbon steel blades are made out of C100 steel. Both UHB-20C and C100 supposedly have similar properties as 1095.

You don't know how to use a knife. Why did you keep batoning when it could not go any further? Didn't you feel the guard hitting the tree stump? Why didn't you move the stick to the edge of the stump so the guard would not get in the way?
