Never seen so many experts in one comment section, most of them don’t know ass from elbow, looks like a top job to me,all drives will sink after years of use no matter what,it’s just life
I'm sure there are many ways it could have been done and some better than others, I enjoyed the video and the comments from other pavers too. Thanks for sharing.
Looks pretty, but on the important part, the Base it's sat on, not enough excavation of soil levels or installation and compaction of type 1 crushed limestone, no aco drainage for pitch of driveway, edge bonding works? etc. Not criticism, observation with head knowledge. Check your guarantee term and conditions for later problems in these things. Kind regards
Just park a Range Rover on it for a week or two and see what happens, the sub-base was way too shallow....sad that people pay top dollar for a professional service and the guys doing the job / running the company have no appreciation for the engineering aspects involved. No water drainage allowed for, and the edging will more than likely fail as the edge stones are simply sitting on the sand substrate and held in place by the concrete on the edge.
anybody posting a comment that is a landscape gardener or paver saying this is a good job should be ashamed. shows how many cowboys are actually out there and why its so hard to find anyone decent with a reliable reputation.
Had my front garden 6x10 (I know, massive) and back garden redone (bit larger than the front). They were from a local community of certain people, impressed. They did a fantastic job. I am happy for the price paid as it came down by about £1500 (total) from the original quote when I mentioned their rivals in the business. A few of my neighbours have been round and are impressed by the work.
Shoddy driveway, it might look ok to someone who doesn’t have a clue but it’s a poor job, haunching edgings With no concrete underneath is a big no no, tipping wast from last job in sub base is wrong and there wasn’t much of a base laid,
Last jobs off cuts in the drive ain’t a bad thing I’ve seen us rip up an old drive way and use the old blocks as a sub base below the actual sub base it only adds strength to your ground works when wacked properly, a standard family car drive way should have a minimum 100 mm sub base for a heavier vehicle/commercial is a minimum of 200mm

I know nothing about driveways but it looks good to me, all the people who think the base is not good enough tell me what’s bad that’s gonna happen to it and in how long?
Well, let's put it this way, everyone that says it's a crap job have it a year or two and yet here we are nearly 5 years later and it's fine. I cleaned it for the first time the other day, just waiting for dry days so I can resand it. Unfortunately, the "pros" on here won't believe me and I don't care to be honest. It came with a 5 year warranty anyway so I'm covered.
Although this drive would be condemned by a building inspector, the customer is happy and with the light traffic it will endure the faults will not appear for a few years.
Mason Ringbinder condemned lol. You tell me why and I will contact them. So you are basically saying if I wanted to sell my property I couldn't because it's fine wrong lol
I have placed two links below which set out the minimum specification for the installation of this type of wearing surface. If you compare it to the work that was carried out you should see that it falls short of these specifications. Pay attention to the substrate depth and the total lack of concrete under the perimeter of the paving. I mention selling my house because of as you say it could be condemned, then surveyors would see that moving forward if of course you are correct.
Yes you are missing something. Lets start with "condemned"; this refers to work carried out on your drive not meeting the require minimum installation standards and not the house. The link includes a PDF from Marshalls who manufacture paving blocks, although they are not the company who manufactured the blocks your contractor used, the code of practice for preparing the substrate will be the same. Forterra who manufactured the paving blocks you have in your drive (FORMPAVE) do not have such a PDF readily available. A surveyor would be unable to assess the depth of substrate used and lack of concrete around and under the periphery, unless of course he digs a trial hole. Your video reveals all of this and in that respect, has some "clout". Send it to Forterra and ask their considered opinion, especially if Abbey Paving is a Forterra approved contractor. It would be interesting to see if their opinion agrees with mine. All the best Mason
Looks nice finished, as you had it on camera did you ask them why they dumped rubbish from another job under your drive, and are there bits missing off the video? As I saw 2 tonne(at most) of mot get dropped but on your drive that would only give 50mm which surely isn’t enough or is it because of the ground they needed less? just curious about the site prep as plan to get mine done soon and every quote I’ve had mention 150mm of mot sub base which you definitely didn’t have so hoping you could let me know what they said about that. Looks nice though.
Well, with that kind of edge job, it won't last long. That is how you make a patio for people and a table, chairs. This was not built for the weight of vehicles. IMO. Pretty, for now.
Finish looks good but couple of points, edgings should be concreted in separately but know majority don't these days for speed. What happened to the camera when stone and sand was going in? It did not look like enough stone went in, should be at least 100mm Looks nice and if does not spread or sink over the years all good
I'm not an expert on block paving but I know the principles of good groundwork. Also researched this quite a lot as we are having our driveway done at the moment by a company who were given the job on the basis of reputation locally but also on the detailed information of how their drives were constructed. They also did next door's drive so we saw how that was done. Currently excavated to a depth of 9 inches and weed control membrane laid over the entire site. This looks really shoddy by comparison. It may be OK for a few years but will eventually start to move.
Looks great. You should also offer pressure washing. You could make an extra $400.00 at least on top of the job. Send a worker there the day before to prep it so the area is dry when you arrive.

paul wilkinson been doing this for a number of years now the driveway is fine and as for the edge it has a concrete haunch which will last a lifetime all drysanded and whacked as well nice drive bud
Looks smart, the old key board warriors crack me sometimes read one page of instructions from google and are transformed into high and mighty experts. The proofs in the pudding check the posters reply.
Right because there are no pavers using youtube and looking at videos. Give me a break. As a PC tech, you better bet your ass I'd call someone out on shotty work. Stop pretending like people are just being combative for no reason. They may have a point.
Apparently, membranes are not needed in the vast majority of driveways: www.pavingexpert.com/faqmembr.htm _In the vast majority of light-use constructions (patios, driveways, footpaths, etc) there is absolutely no need for a membrane to be placed between sub-base and the bedding layer: it achieves almost nothing, as a well-selected sub-base material will have what we call a 'tight' or 'close' finish, that is, there will be very few, if any, significant voids. Further: when constructing a sub-base, the good contractor will 'blind' the surface with fines or grit sand to ensure that there are no nasty voids that could gobble up the bedding material._
paul wilkinson well we saw no evidence of sufficient depth of type1 subbase and never saw on your video sufficient compacting off subbase. All off which are crucial to stop ground sinking. So that is why I am asking as after a good down pour puddles will form. Don't get me wrong your drive looks ok. but the way it has been constructed defy all known tex books. And I assume your parking a car on driveway not a Sinclair C5.
Thanks for posting this video, it's never a nice feeling to have randoms saying that the work you paid for is shoddy. It's tough to hear but this work actually is shoddy and it's not just 'internet experts' saying this, take a look at the video that Paully linked to in a comment he posted 8 months ago: ua-cam.com/video/wNcRXIr8bBw/v-deo.html You'll be hard pressed to find any critical comments because the job is well done. I had a felt roof done that was a bodge job with zero beads and poor drainage, surprising thing is that it lasted 14 years to this month. After I stripped it off, I found all the chipboard and overlaid plyboard was soaked through and through. It took 14 years for the leak to show through to the plasterboard but it was slowly deteriorating over all those years. What you have now isn't the end of the world, it'll last until it's someone else's problem 10, 20 or even 50 years from now but know that it's still not a thorough job.
I dont know that whats the point of criticism. this is their house. what ever they want to do, lets do them. and Abbey Paving has done a good job. whats the big deal
Ohhh, I wouldn't have done it like that! Never block paved before but I wouldn't do it like that. Oh no no no. Isn't it great critiquing others work, having never done it yourself a great British pastime. Ohhhh those off cuts, from another job!! Oh the horror, knowing they could explode at anytime, I'll forward this on to Explosive Ordinance Disposal.

Would quite like to see the drive now....
It blows my mind how the OP has genuinely convinced himself anyone critical of this work is "jealous" of his driveway.
Matt Culler I think you need to look at the posts again, don't think I've said jealous too anyone, but if you're happy, then that's fine by me!
Shouldn't the surface water be made to drain towards the road and into a slotted metal covered gully and then to soak away?

paul wilkinson been doing this for a number of years now the driveway is fine and as for the edge it has a concrete haunch which will last a lifetime all drysanded and whacked as well nice drive bud
Yeah, not sure what all the hate is about, but hey ho, each to their own, thanks for the comment
goodcat1982 edge banding? How would you do it without haunching?
Nothing wrong with that job mate.
Piglet at @2:47 ??
Why did they not just do it in creative mode?
I always select a tradesman from the You Tube comments section to ensure a top job😏
Never thought people hating on a driveway was a thing, looks completely fine
Takes all sorts lol
Looks good man! Keep it up
This is like the SIMS build mode in real life haha
How long did this take to do and how much?
If u don't mind me asking ofc
Why didn't he move the car out the way
How much?
Looks smart, the old key board warriors crack me sometimes read one page of instructions from google and are transformed into high and mighty experts. The proofs in the pudding check the posters reply.
cerb101 whatever floats their boat lol
Right because there are no pavers using youtube and looking at videos. Give me a break. As a PC tech, you better bet your ass I'd call someone out on shotty work. Stop pretending like people are just being combative for no reason. They may have a point.
teamhex they may have a point, but the issues I should be having, I'm simply not. So it does not back up their issues they mention, not yet anyway!
Dont use Abbey paving guys!!
PEEK A BOO why?
just read the other coments... and this comment is almost 1 year old btw
PotatoMasta Fish&Games its not good work, i bet the pavement starts sinking over the time
What the fuck do u know u prick
@@dennysmith2291 more than you obviously
Where's the membrane and concreting the boarder blocks in place?
David Parker what would you do on the soldier course then?
David Parker 7:46 edging boarder
Suggest you watch it again
Apparently, membranes are not needed in the vast majority of driveways:
www.pavingexpert.com/faqmembr.htm
_In the vast majority of light-use constructions (patios, driveways, footpaths, etc) there is absolutely no need for a membrane to be placed between sub-base and the bedding layer: it achieves almost nothing, as a well-selected sub-base material will have what we call a 'tight' or 'close' finish, that is, there will be very few, if any, significant voids. Further: when constructing a sub-base, the good contractor will 'blind' the surface with fines or grit sand to ensure that there are no nasty voids that could gobble up the bedding material._
I wish my lads worked as fast as that 😳
Not even put any hardcore down 😂 cowboy builders, bet that’s all over the place by now
Can't believe they didn't use any stringlines, they must have been pretty confident all the pavers would line up.
They're using batons in the sand set to level then screeding it with a flat edge pressed against both batons to get to level👍
Nice but weak base what kind of tool was he using to cut the brick 🧱 ?
Block splitter. Seems like a lot of the pavers in that part of the world still use them
Why did they dump bricks at the start
greatoutdoors Lawncare didn't know they did?
I'm getting something similar how much did this cost
cost of this? looks great! guess the value of your house when straight up!
its good you have no weeds. but didnt see them put any paving stones at the garden edge to stop it moving sideways
stephen borsbey they cemented in gray stones, is that what you mean? It can't move as far as I can see
And was all your yard supposed to be ripped up??
Looks nice. If I may ask, how much does a job like this cost?
Thousands !
It's a shame they missed out a few vital preparation that would secure the Longevity of the driveway.
How's your driveway stood the test of time 5 years later ?
Just dirtier lol
@@paulwilko10 fair enough 😁
How is it holding up?
On a serious note, as good as day one. May not look as new but nothing wrong with the strength of it.
no wonder they did not come in the cheapest . You'd have to pay for all the phone-time too :-)
Would be nice to see how it looks now. Particularly when it's wet.
Annette Hurley why when it's wet?
paul wilkinson well we saw no evidence of sufficient depth of type1 subbase and never saw on your video sufficient compacting off subbase. All off which are crucial to stop ground sinking. So that is why I am asking as after a good down pour puddles will form.
Don't get me wrong your drive looks ok. but the way it has been constructed defy all known tex books. And I assume your parking a car on driveway not a Sinclair C5.
Annette Hurley the only puddles that appear are by the door step, but only small and that is normally when the drain is full of leaves.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE HHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAA
JP2014 ha ha! That’s it in a nutshell!😅
What did you pay?
I think he is very very good on the Late Late Show, I think his name is Smithy
I dont know that whats the point of criticism. this is their house. what ever they want to do, lets do them. and Abbey Paving has done a good job. whats the big deal
Wouldn't worry too much matey, I'm not lol
you folks are good
So as everyone had said, is your driveway sinking?
Dang Dong its like a sinkhole 😂😂😂 not sunk at all 👍
a lot of experts in here x,)
Viktor yeah, bless them lol
beautiful... they did a nice job. i like the accent and the boarders and the overall layout.
Thank you
Ohhh, I wouldn't have done it like that!
