As a veteran, I salute Sorrell Booke for his service to our country and his amazing brilliance! Terrific video!
Thank you!
All I can say is WOW! Mr. Booke was a great veteran, and actor. He seemed to be a very humble man. Much respect! RIP Mr. Booke.
Amazing man!
It is not a surprise that Sorel Brooke took the role of Boss Hogg. I think he wanted to have fun and that series was fun according to many who appeared on the show. I would guess that the pay was also pretty good. Many comedians are smart, well educated people. Creating comedy is not easy.
It appears that Mr. Brooke had a strong sense of duty to his country - and his efforts should be appreciated.
I think you're spot on!
It was one hundred and twenty thousand samolians ........... Duh !
Sorrell Booke not Sorel Brooke!
Sorrell
No small parts, just small actors.
RIP Boss Hogg.
So true!
He was smart enough to put down his ego and grab that bag! So happy you made this video. It's a great testament to his legacy!
Thank you!
Best role was as Principal Bester in Robert Mulligan's film Up The Down Staircase!
Makes me proud to be a veteran. We're not all "just grunts." Great video. I've been waiting on this one since the teaser.
Thank you!!!!!!
Thank You for serving
When 9/11 happened it seamed as though the entire nation was behind us … now the younger generation has taken to calling us “cannon fodder for the rich”, “imperialist puppets”, and “murderers”. It blows me away that the same people who benefit the most from the freedoms in this country are the same people who appear to hate this country the most. I wonder if they would feel the same away about “US oppression” after spending some time in the Middle East, Western Africa, Southern Philippines, or Gaza.
I to am a vet, very proud to have served, but so humbled to be in the company of such great heroes.
@@randyballew8795All who served were heroes!❤🇺🇸
I heard he was very very nice too. Good with kids. Whenever he ran into kids were fans of the show he would bust into character for the kids. Very good and kind man
Great to know!
Reminds me of Alan Hale Jr.
He loved getting into character as 'The Skipper' even when in the hospital undergoing treatment for cancer.
@@randynutt5660 I didn't know that that's very cool.
WOW 😮! What an amazing story sir. Little did I know that the bumbling Boss Hogg was a genius. Anyone that is fluent in 18 languages and a TV genius and most of all, a war hero should be taught in every high school and college. In addition, he should be on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Without him on the Dukes of Hazard, the show would not lasted as long as it did. Thank you for the wonderful video.
Thank you♥️♥️♥️♥️
Talk about your unsung heroes. Astounding! Nothing "ordinary" about Mr. Booke! So amazing that such a highly intelligent individual, educated at once prestigious schools as Columbia & Yale, chose to offer his rare and vital gifts and talents in service to his Country, when so many others, given his privelege and qualifications, would most certainly have avoided Military service. He was not only a truly valuable asset in war time, but also a true patriot and genuine genius. I would have loved to have seen and heard him perform Shakespeare, but alas, I only knew him as a Mayor in Hazzard County. Thank you, Sorrell Booke for your invaluable service to your Country, from a grateful Nation. God bless you, Boss Hogg.
"Now cracks a noble heart. Good night, sweet prince, and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest".

Hamlet Act 5 Scene 2
Beautifully said, wow!
My Grandfather and my Uncles served in WW2 they didn’t talk much about the war, when they came home they just wanted to live and have families. They were the quiet ones but like a lot other veterans gone but not forgotten.
God bless them all!
Same my grandfather
My dad was one of those men, he was just a 17 year old boy when he went into the army WWII.
I think Sorrell Booke got a kick out of playing Boss Hog😇
I agree!
as a multilingualist & musical multi-instrumentalist myself since childhood, at the moment 7 1/2 languages & 8 instruments, I just love and enjoy ppl like him. Music is language and language is music and therefore connects ppl 🤩🥰
Wow!
I am fluent only in seven languages and that and his war service most impresses me!
Music, language and math come from the same part of the brain.
"Music is an arithmetic means of measuring time."...- my percussion instructor.
...your analogy is way more artistic and satisfying. ;)
Back in the day when “the Dukes” was my son’s favorite show I learned of his classical training. Maybe because we lived not far from Yale and word spread. The military career was a surprise to learn.
Amazing right?
I never would have imagined this.
Amazing right?
God Bless all the heroes. We need them today. ❤

James best said ,, of him... sorel had the most incredible memory of any man alive! He could remember every play, part, and line of every script he ever memorised word for word with no mistakes 💯
Incredible! I can't even remember items on a grocery list, names of people just introduced to me, birthdates, or phone numbers! What a truly "beautiful mind". Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much for this video. I didn't know that "Boss Hogg" was a Korean War Veteran, and he spoke that many languages, a true American Hero. Also, I didn't know the story of Waylon Jennings. Again, thank you. Your videos are always full history.
Thank you!
He was one of the best most versatile character actors ever He played a general in two early episodes of MASH.He played a gangster named Lefkowitz in Soap.I forgot he played Archie Bunker's boss on All in the Family.
Correct!
I saw him on an episode of MASH where he plays a General. It was the first time I saw him without the Boss Hogg attitude and dialect. Great actor and greater American. Much Respect Sorrel.
Love that episode!
@@ThisDate when he grabs the brandy from radar and gulps it 👍🏻
Yup!
Everytime I watch your video's. I'm just so amazed. Of all these exceptional people! Sorrel Booke being no.1 !!!
Thank you! We have more stories to tell!
He wouldn't have been Boss Hogg if I knew all of this about him. He's Sorrel booke now.
Beautifully said!
Mr. Brooke just enjoyed his job, the pay, and the perks. The information you supplied was a good example of how we shouldn't judge a book by its cover. Too many actor's careers are hampered by a chosen role.
Thank you for giving insight into a fine and accomplished man. His humility, intelligence, and honor are something in short supply today.
Thank you! Believe it or not, he's similar to charles bronson: ua-cam.com/video/19wD_LhS-D8/v-deo.html
Every Waylon fan knows he was part of that band. He was also made to play bass. It was his guilt that caused his life long addictions to substances.
So said😢😢😢
I appreciate the fans.

Yes Sir He Was a War Hero and Genius Both 😊
Yup!
Sorell also played mr. bomberg in the tv series, “ Room 222”. 1971
Yes!!!
Wow!!😊
Thank you for the extended video on Mr Booke and after some of the screen shots you flashed it made me remember his bit parts in MASH n other shows. I believe with that generation he won't mind being remembered for Boss Hogg cause they aren't looking to be remembered as a piece but a part of the whole
Thank you for watching ♥️♥️♥️♥️
What an amazing story , loved listening to it , especially being that I was a dedicated Dukes of Hazard viewer as a young man..

If you want to know why he went into counterintelligence in the Army following college, well he was probably recruited by the C.I.A. while at Yale. Yale in the post-World War II years was a hotbed for C.I.A. recruitment. Especially the so-called "Skull & Bones" club. If Booke was in Skull & Bones it's basically a lock that it was the C.I.A. that recruited him.
Wow great point!
Skull & Bones was for undergraduates (Yale College) but some Bonesmen who went to the agency might have known Brooke and could have recruited him
I love and have Total respect for everyone of our Veterans. Thank you for every bit of this important information on our Veterans. God Bless everyone of you.
Amen. Amen!
That’s such an exercise in don’t judge as if you know someone till you do loved that show so much

Wow!
A true hero!!! Amazing man. Thank you so much for this amazing information. Rest in peace Sir ❤🙏

Thinking back... Remembering him in those roles he portrayed, his fluency in over 12 to 18 languages and, his involvement in Army counterintelligence...
You look at his performances and go "there goes a professional spy behind that face." I remember him when he appeared in "Mash."
Love that MASH episode!
@@ThisDate You can't help but get the impression he contributed a little "something special" to his portrayal of that role.
Absolutely
I don't see why its a 'surprise' he took the role of Boss Hogg. He had lived a varied, interesting and exciting life..The army service of course was very serious and probably quite taxing. Now he had the opportunity to just ham it up and have fun! and im sure he and his co-stars on DOH has exactly that, a LOT of fun from the looks of it
Well said and agree!
OMG, I forgot he wore a "fat suit" on the Dukes of Hazzard! But more importantly, we should rembr that he was not just a linguistic savant (ur words & so true), but a true American hero!👍🇺🇸
Beautifully said!
It takes REAL genius to play a character like that realistically! Thank you for your service Mr. Booke!!
Amen!
Excellent video of a great man, Mister Booke was truly remarkable, i am glad to have found your channel
Thank you! More great videos to come!
Ordinary guys from anywhere don’t speak 18 languages and have photographic memories. Only a handful of people at any time are true geniuses.
Amazing man!
I have an idea that Mr. Booke secretly loved the irony of being best known as Boss Hogg. He knew who he was , what he was capable of, knew he was a flat out genius and true man. I think he was probably comfortable enough with himself that he got a kick out of it. Also, he didn't grow up in a generation with main character syndrome, He was a journeyman actor who stayed consistently employed, that's a triumph in and of itself. But to have played one of television's most memorable characters is an absolute W. But to have done it with the level of humility and class is transcendent.
Beautifully said!!!!
@@ThisDate Thanks. And thank you for bringing deserved recognition to these men and women, it's appreciated.

No one else could have played that role as ruthlessly devilishly and brilliantly as him! Literally a touchstone for a generation. Boss Hogg came alive because of him. You can't ask for a better compliment than that. Indelibly etched in the psyche of pop culture. He was the authority figure we loved to hate! Bravo to his talent and his service! Greetings from New Mexico!

There are some videos out there of James Best and Sorrell deep sea fishing, its funny to see them joke a bit in the character of the Dukes. What a great actor and show I grew up with.
Wow need to find that!
Brilliant mind with the ability to act and multitask languages is a strength in communication!

What a humble man he was!……
Amazing!
One of the best, unassuming military intelligence officers I've ever dealt with is a young woman at NASIC. Speaks Russian, Ukrainian and Polish- like a native speaker- and can navigate any Slavic language. Can also speak Spanish and quite a bit of French...had an AA degree before graduating high school, and while in high school played violin at Carnegie Hall. Best part? Although half Slav, she does not look it at all. Truly looks like a high school student, too-

Members of the greatest generation that proudly serve this country during World War II and Korea and Vietnam never talked about their service. That’s what makes them great. Thanks for posting this about Sorrell. I’ve heard that story regarding Waylon Jennings and the crash of Buddy Holly’s plane before. I can only imagine how horrified and sick he must’ve felt when he found out about the crash.
Thanks for watching
The choice was obvious--he was 2 different persons, the one we saw on TV & who he was in real life, an especially fascinating, almost unbelievable, story of a true hero!👍😃🇺🇸

Dukes of Hazzard was a great show.

This story was incredible! I was amazed to learn about Sorrell Booke!

Wow. People that accomplished are fine with things like that.He was happy with how people loved the character. Wow.
So true!
I was surprised by Mr. Sorrel’ s combat experience!
Amazing man! Check out our video on Top 10 Hollwood Heroes: ua-cam.com/video/IRM4-mesfI4/v-deo.html
I doubt Sorrell was embarrassed about playing Boss Hogg . It was a great role on a great series . How many secondary characters in any series are as memorable as his ?
He was proud of his work. Standup guy. And hero.
Only those that truly knew him, knew just how brilliant this man really was! After 70 years, you'd think they'd declassify all his info!❤🇺🇸
Yes!
I feel so bad for only knowing Sorrell Booke as Boss Hogg for most of my life. He was _so much more._ He should have gotten a shot at an Oscar.
Just tonight, I saw an old episode of _Combat!_ featuring a young James Best (Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane) playing a cowardly soldier. For those who don't know, look up Vic Morrow (one of _Combat!'s_ leading men) and his tragic death.
Also, I knew about Waylon Jennings' fateful tie-in to "The Day the Music Died."
Amazing right? Thanks for commenting!
Truly amazing!

I'm here in Australia and i didn't know that sorel booke was in the army and I've got a book written by James best (Roscoe) and just a part of it he says how him and sorel booke was great friends off screen
Wow amazing right?
Well think Sorell really loved the part of Boss Hogg, What is not to like? I tuned in just to watch Boss Hogg James Best and Flash the wonder dog. As for Service in the Army, my guess what ever he was doing is going to remain classified for a long time to come. As for the languages, That is even more impressive, since I can say my second language is Russian and I been at it for 5 years now, I got a way to go with it
Wow amazing!
He was a humble genius. How the hell did he find the time to learn all those languages? Also, because he was so humble, I don’t think it bothered him a bit that he played Boss Hogg.
I think you're right!
What a bloody legend.
Indeed!!!!!!
remember back in the 70s there was this little old lady missionary who came to the church we were going to at the time who was fluent or semi fluent in 54 languages. Kind of mind blowing.
And would';t it be cool if Sorrel Booke was the real life Colonel Bragg from MASH?
And I am sure that Mr. Booke was grateful for the best paying job of his life.
Yup!

He also played a general on MASH.
Correct
If you saw O Brother Where are You, the fat Mississippi Governor was played by yet another war hero. Mel Brooks was in the meat grinder Hurtgen Forest and said that nothing funny happened there. He was being serious. Every last man both American and German were heroes in that insane battle. A book came out about that in the late 80s or in the 90s titled "When the Odds were Even" that takes more into account about the battle than I have ever read. For one thing, the Air Corps was ineffectual in that battle because there was too much danger in bombing American Troops. That in itself was a major thing, the other was that material and replacements had to come all the way from Normandy as no port close to the Hurtgen was available, meaning that at times there were more and better suppled German troops than American. Aid stations were over run, recaptured, over run again, then it snowed and covered up aid stations after the Germans had captured them and pulled back and it wasn't until the snow melted that all the dead who had been left stacked up in rows finally revealed their positions. Some higher up who obviously did not know what front line service was, wanted to show the Germans just how materially strong we were for Thanksgiving and ordered hot Thanksgiving meals to be brought up to the front lines in plain view of the enemy. The Germans waited until long chow lines were in place and then called down the artillery. General Gavin or Ridgeway witnessed it and later wrote that when he went home after the war and Thanksgiving meal was served, he got up from the table and went outside and threw up. He said he never celebrated Thanksgiving again.

I knew the fact on Waylon Jennings. I think CBS didn't want us to know Brooks' military career and his accomplishments. We may of seen the character different......
Really good point!
It's quite genius to be that intelligent and yet be so convincing at playing the fool. Sounds like a counterintelligence man to me. It is all in how you look at it. IMHO
Totally agree!
No doubt about it, an amazing man; I had no idea. That said, I've always found Sorrell's performances over-the-top, in a caricature-like way that seemed destined to lead to Boss Hogg. I've tried, but every time I see him in a 60's TV show, his performance is too exaggerated (eg: Naked City). He has a big role in a very good Route 66 episode from '62 ("The Voice at the End of the Line"), in which he plays a warehouse manager pretending to be a "leading man" type in a phone romance; he only occasionally becomes too whiny and contrived, and he is FABULOUS in the touching, sensitive final scene...really excellent. But that's the exception. In 1966, he appeared onstage in the Lincoln Center revival of "Finian's Rainbow" as the Southern blowhard Senator Billboard Rawkins, a role which was essentially a "warm-up" for the Hogg. And though he was respected enough to be cast in the all-star stage/filmed production of O' Neill's play "The Iceman Cometh" in 1973, his performance (in a small role) is really a put-off. So, in many ways, he found his ideal niche in his "Dukes" role. But that in no way detracts from his inspiring personal story, which you've presented exceptionally well.
PS-- the actor onscreen (on the right) at 9:00 is Roy Poole, another stage/TV guy from the 60's, a wonderful but unsung actor. Check him out in the filmed musical "1776" as old Stephen Hopkins of Rhode Island; you'd never recognize him.
Wow great insights, wonderful comment! Thank you!

IMO, there SHD BA statue of him in his hometown of Buffalo, NY. If my memory is correct, John Basilone was also born in Buffalo, NY.
There is a statue of John Basilone in his adopted hometown of Raritan, NJ. And an annual parade 2 honor him.
Boss Hoggs deserves the same. My dad was a Korean War vet, who was up by the Yulu River when the Chinese jumped in.
God bless all of America's vets, and active duty.
How Abt a few foreign words in each vid in honor of Sorrel Booke. He would B glad 2 hv tt as part of his legacy. That bcz of him, more Americans will begin 2 learn a foreign language.
When I was in the AF, I was stationed in England. So I did not hv the opportunity 2 learn another language. But it did take a while 2 understand the British.
As was once stated, the Americans and the British are separated by a common language.
Another great vid sir. I salute U.😊
I love that idea! There should be a statue!
Thanks, Nick. The reason for the lack of information available on Mr. Brooke's service in U.S. Army counterintelligence during the Korean War is a simple one. The whole declassification process is broken.
To quote a Washington Post article on this topic from 1/31/22, the declassification process is "outmoded, unsustainable, and keeps too much information from the public." I doubt this will change anytime soon.
I salute you, Mr. Brooke, for putting your immense talents to work for the U.S. Army and against the worldwide expansion of Communism. The stark difference between North and South Korea today is due in a very large part to the sacrifices made by U.S. and allied troops there, including yourself.
You stepped away from a promising career to put your life at risk and to serve a higher cause. In doing this, you and every Korean War veteran helped to make the world a better place.
