It is not a surprise that Sorel Brooke took the role of Boss Hogg. I think he wanted to have fun and that series was fun according to many who appeared on the show. I would guess that the pay was also pretty good. Many comedians are smart, well educated people. Creating comedy is not easy.
It appears that Mr. Brooke had a strong sense of duty to his country - and his efforts should be appreciated.

When 9/11 happened it seamed as though the entire nation was behind us … now the younger generation has taken to calling us “cannon fodder for the rich”, “imperialist puppets”, and “murderers”. It blows me away that the same people who benefit the most from the freedoms in this country are the same people who appear to hate this country the most. I wonder if they would feel the same away about “US oppression” after spending some time in the Middle East, Western Africa, Southern Philippines, or Gaza.

WOW 😮! What an amazing story sir. Little did I know that the bumbling Boss Hogg was a genius. Anyone that is fluent in 18 languages and a TV genius and most of all, a war hero should be taught in every high school and college. In addition, he should be on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Without him on the Dukes of Hazard, the show would not lasted as long as it did. Thank you for the wonderful video.

Talk about your unsung heroes. Astounding! Nothing "ordinary" about Mr. Booke! So amazing that such a highly intelligent individual, educated at once prestigious schools as Columbia & Yale, chose to offer his rare and vital gifts and talents in service to his Country, when so many others, given his privelege and qualifications, would most certainly have avoided Military service. He was not only a truly valuable asset in war time, but also a true patriot and genuine genius. I would have loved to have seen and heard him perform Shakespeare, but alas, I only knew him as a Mayor in Hazzard County. Thank you, Sorrell Booke for your invaluable service to your Country, from a grateful Nation. God bless you, Boss Hogg.

If you want to know why he went into counterintelligence in the Army following college, well he was probably recruited by the C.I.A. while at Yale. Yale in the post-World War II years was a hotbed for C.I.A. recruitment. Especially the so-called "Skull & Bones" club. If Booke was in Skull & Bones it's basically a lock that it was the C.I.A. that recruited him.

I have an idea that Mr. Booke secretly loved the irony of being best known as Boss Hogg. He knew who he was , what he was capable of, knew he was a flat out genius and true man. I think he was probably comfortable enough with himself that he got a kick out of it. Also, he didn't grow up in a generation with main character syndrome, He was a journeyman actor who stayed consistently employed, that's a triumph in and of itself. But to have played one of television's most memorable characters is an absolute W. But to have done it with the level of humility and class is transcendent.

Speaks Russian, Ukrainian and Polish- like a native speaker- and can navigate any Slavic language. Can also speak Spanish and quite a bit of French...had an AA degree before graduating high school, and while in high school played violin at Carnegie Hall. Best part? Although half Slav, she does not look it at all. Truly looks like a high school student, too-

Members of the greatest generation that proudly serve this country during World War II and Korea and Vietnam never talked about their service. That’s what makes them great. Thanks for posting this about Sorrell. I’ve heard that story regarding Waylon Jennings and the crash of Buddy Holly’s plane before. I can only imagine how horrified and sick he must’ve felt when he found out about the crash.

I feel so bad for only knowing Sorrell Booke as Boss Hogg for most of my life. He was _so much more._ He should have gotten a shot at an Oscar.
Just tonight, I saw an old episode of _Combat!_ featuring a young James Best (Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane) playing a cowardly soldier. For those who don't know, look up Vic Morrow (one of _Combat!'s_ leading men) and his tragic death.
Also, I knew about Waylon Jennings' fateful tie-in to "The Day the Music Died."

Well think Sorell really loved the part of Boss Hogg, What is not to like? I tuned in just to watch Boss Hogg James Best and Flash the wonder dog. As for Service in the Army, my guess what ever he was doing is going to remain classified for a long time to come. As for the languages, That is even more impressive, since I can say my second language is Russian and I been at it for 5 years now, I got a way to go with it

If you saw O Brother Where are You, the fat Mississippi Governor was played by yet another war hero. Mel Brooks was in the meat grinder Hurtgen Forest and said that nothing funny happened there. He was being serious. Every last man both American and German were heroes in that insane battle. A book came out about that in the late 80s or in the 90s titled "When the Odds were Even" that takes more into account about the battle than I have ever read. For one thing, the Air Corps was ineffectual in that battle because there was too much danger in bombing American Troops. That in itself was a major thing, the other was that material and replacements had to come all the way from Normandy as no port close to the Hurtgen was available, meaning that at times there were more and better suppled German troops than American. Aid stations were over run, recaptured, over run again, then it snowed and covered up aid stations after the Germans had captured them and pulled back and it wasn't until the snow melted that all the dead who had been left stacked up in rows finally revealed their positions. Some higher up who obviously did not know what front line service was, wanted to show the Germans just how materially strong we were for Thanksgiving and ordered hot Thanksgiving meals to be brought up to the front lines in plain view of the enemy. The Germans waited until long chow lines were in place and then called down the artillery. General Gavin or Ridgeway witnessed it and later wrote that when he went home after the war and Thanksgiving meal was served, he got up from the table and went outside and threw up. He said he never celebrated Thanksgiving again.

No doubt about it, an amazing man; I had no idea. That said, I've always found Sorrell's performances over-the-top, in a caricature-like way that seemed destined to lead to Boss Hogg. I've tried, but every time I see him in a 60's TV show, his performance is too exaggerated (eg: Naked City). He has a big role in a very good Route 66 episode from '62 ("The Voice at the End of the Line"), in which he plays a warehouse manager pretending to be a "leading man" type in a phone romance; he only occasionally becomes too whiny and contrived, and he is FABULOUS in the touching, sensitive final scene...really excellent. But that's the exception. In 1966, he appeared onstage in the Lincoln Center revival of "Finian's Rainbow" as the Southern blowhard Senator Billboard Rawkins, a role which was essentially a "warm-up" for the Hogg. And though he was respected enough to be cast in the all-star stage/filmed production of O' Neill's play "The Iceman Cometh" in 1973, his performance (in a small role) is really a put-off. So, in many ways, he found his ideal niche in his "Dukes" role. But that in no way detracts from his inspiring personal story, which you've presented exceptionally well.
PS-- the actor onscreen (on the right) at 9:00 is Roy Poole, another stage/TV guy from the 60's, a wonderful but unsung actor. Check him out in the filmed musical "1776" as old Stephen Hopkins of Rhode Island; you'd never recognize him.

There is a statue of John Basilone in his adopted hometown of Raritan, NJ. And an annual parade 2 honor him.
Boss Hoggs deserves the same. My dad was a Korean War vet, who was up by the Yulu River when the Chinese jumped in.
God bless all of America's vets, and active duty.
How Abt a few foreign words in each vid in honor of Sorrel Booke. He would B glad 2 hv tt as part of his legacy. That bcz of him, more Americans will begin 2 learn a foreign language.
When I was in the AF, I was stationed in England. So I did not hv the opportunity 2 learn another language. But it did take a while 2 understand the British.

Thanks, Nick. The reason for the lack of information available on Mr. Brooke's service in U.S. Army counterintelligence during the Korean War is a simple one. The whole declassification process is broken.
To quote a Washington Post article on this topic from 1/31/22, the declassification process is "outmoded, unsustainable, and keeps too much information from the public." I doubt this will change anytime soon.
I salute you, Mr. Brooke, for putting your immense talents to work for the U.S. Army and against the worldwide expansion of Communism. The stark difference between North and South Korea today is due in a very large part to the sacrifices made by U.S. and allied troops there, including yourself.
You stepped away from a promising career to put your life at risk and to serve a higher cause. In doing this, you and every Korean War veteran helped to make the world a better place.
