I'm just so happy for Elladj, how his career has sky rocketed, from doing what he loves, and also how he is able to incorporate activism into his activities. As a competitive skater he always stood out for his edgework, skills and artistry, which were second to none. How fascinating and inspiring what he's been able to do post retirement! On top of the shows, social media has given him an amazing tool to reach many and make such a positive influence. :)

We have something in common. I’m white and always wanted to ice skate, too! ;-) I’ve been “ice skating” 2 or 3 times, but spent most of it flat on my behind on the cold hard ice rink, LOL ... It takes stronger ankles than mine to do otherwise, not to mention a whole heck of a lot of talent and skill. And probably a heap of fearlessness as well! Props to anyone who skates at the level of this gentleman, and I hope to see a lot more of him. I also support his goal of bringing more diversity to this sport, and to every other aspect of our society. Diversity is beautiful! Striving toward a more perfect world!
I'm also a biracial figure skater, and he's right the sport is extremely expensive and not accessible to many. But honestly can we please move away from the idea that someone of the same ethnicity as you needs to do something in order for you to do it? Yes, money and other issues have held back my skating progress, but never once did I want to give up simply because I was the only black girl. I never felt insecure about my skin color simply because I was taught early on it doesn't really matter all that much. I feel like these goals of "representation" while good in intention, sadly reinforce the idea that race is parmount and actually make people (especially young people/kids) MORE conscious about their physical characteristics, therefore causing people to fear "standing out" due to their race, therefore DECREASING their goal of diversity. If people just did what they wanted without regards to someone "looking like them" (side note: can't stand that term in this context because it implies all people from the same ethnic group "look that same" Isn't that a racist concept?),then we'd probably have more diversity as people from all different ethnic backgrounds would pursue their interests without worrying about potential differences

We (Black skaters) are out there, but this is an expensive sport due to little, or no financial support if/when they're going on the Olympic track. However, there's Starr Andrews, who's within the Senior ranks, hoping to place in the next Olympics.

Surya Bonaly really inspired me to become a figure skater as a kid. If I had of saw Elladj Balde, too, I knew I could be unstoppable.
