The only downside to building a resort style gym is the clientele tends to lean on the less health conscious side. It becomes a place to go to get away versus a place to go to get going. I was a member of the Naperville / Warrenville clubs for 5 years and I was surprised how many overweight people were just at the pool doing zero training. And that’s fine. But if you’re going to join a high end club, join because you’re trying to better yourself. Not because you want a new pool to eat a hamburger around. I remember how slammed the parking lot was in the summer and no one was upstairs training (not a bad thing for an athlete to have lots of space to himself) but then the pool was 1,000 kids running around while their moms just scrolled social media. I ended up dropped my membership and going to CrossFit anyways. But if you’re joining, be prepared to have people with zero interest in wellness just taking up space merely because their health insurance helps subsidize the cost of joining…
