    If you're going to skip one of the read tests, I'd skip the pre-read instead of post.
    The preread will only catch hard failures, where the drive read had physically cant read a sector. The post-read, however, has an expectation than every sector it reads is a 0 (since it happens after zeroing the disk) - since it knows theres an expected value here, it's actually testing two things: can I read the data, and is the data I read the same as what I wrote? Helps detect if there are issues which might otherwise result in silent corruption

    Why "just" 8TB drives? The 12/14 TB versions are on sale from time to time.

    • @b00bytrap
      @b00bytrap  3 роки тому +2

      Hey Bart, thanks for watching. Well, the 12TB versions were on sale for €187,- The 14TB ones were on sale for €220,- this time.
      When I bought the first 8TB drives 7 months ago, I paid €135,- for each MyBook. I bought these 8TB Elements for €115,- each. I went with 8TB drives again because I already had 2x 8TB.

    Great video! Just got two of the same drives. The first one is precleared but i did that after i chucked it and not using the ubs2.0 on my dell poweredge t320 server. The drives seems good but they running really hot. Got up to 47c. I added a fan against the front of the drivecages and it went down to 32c.
    Just a question. Is it better to move the files using rsync instead of krusader?

    6:30 You shouldn't be disappointed, if you lookup the RN on the drive it will come up as the air equivalent to the helium filled ones you got last time, helium 8TB has been phased out for the past year, any now gotten will be old stock likely. It will act exactly the same but won't die due to helium leaking out, tho no one knows for sure how long that will be (some speculating the drive will be long dead before it happens) so don't panic over that as I have 4 helium ones, all still kicking.
    The new drives you got have 5 platters instead of 7, they are using a more dense CMR platter which is why they are air over helium, airs limit is 6 platters.
    FYI I bumped into your video threw someone who bashed these very drives not knowing a thing, while claiming they did. The RN number is basically the only thing that matters when it comes to finding out what you need about a specific drive, everything else is firmware based that limits/unlocks features, either threw QA (don't buy 12TBs they can come with 14TB drives, I think Byte My Bits did a video on it), over production, slated product line etc. Worst part is the person linked a topic url directly to the page that even mentioned RN numbers and how they are basically the same drive... They went out returned the WD Elements and paid more for a red with the same RN as either the new drives they just returned or older ones from past purchases.

      Hey Egg-Roll, thank you for watching and the detailed explanation. I must admit that these drives do perform quite well in my server. At the moment they run 2°C hotter than the EDAZ drives (30 vs 28) so fine by me.
      If these drives hold up for 5-7 years I'm more than happy to replace them when the time comes. Only time will tell I guess.
      All in all I'm quite happy with these purchases.. Saved me a couple of hundred euros already :)

    the bays that are empty should have the blanks or empty trays inserted for optimal airflow (and should reduce the noise)

      Hey lee x, indeed and they are in place now :) When this video was filmed, they hadn't arrived yet.

    Waar heb je die server gekocht? Creo, serverhome of gewoon nieuw?

      Hey Mitchell Slot
      , thanks for watching. I bought this server from someone on eBay. With 2x E5 2540L, 64GB ECC, 2x 750W, 12x HDD caddies, some fillers and a rail kit for around €400,- (the caddies are quite expensive compared to the rest of the server).

    At the 13 minute mark, you included a Western Digital datasheet for model format decoding. Can you post the actual sheet? Everywhere I looked had sheets from way back in 2009/2012. Thank you very much.

    I'm probably going to be doing a similiar process with my WD Elements drive and I saw a video that said you might have to put special tape on the 3rd pin of the connector. Have you had any issues? if not I will probably just try it your way first

    Gebruik je een losse videokaart voor transcoding in Plex of alles op de cpu?

    • @b00bytrap
      @b00bytrap  3 роки тому

      Hey Bryan Griekspoor, thanks for watching. At the moment I don't use a GPU for transcoding. I play most content with Plex on the Nvidia Shield and therefore it doesn't need to transcode. When my girlfriend uses Plex through the browser, the CPUs do the transcoding.
