Those Airbus a350 delivery slots are so valuable. For American Airlines to just give up those a350 delivery slots and have to go to the back of the line for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner would mean American Airlines takes much longer to modernize their fleet.

They should have kept their A350 after delivery until they got their 787s, then sold their A350s.

No, of course you didn’t, because otherwise you would’ve known the order was for the A350-800 variant, which Airbus canceled and has no plans to resurrect. American had no need of the larger -900 or -1000, and the 787-10 was the only other aircraft in the segment.

American has done the same thing that United did. They both ditched the A350 and are going towards buying more 787s which in my opinion they should have both kept their A350 orders. The A350s would have benefited their long haul routes even more and they could even put the A350 on their longest of routes but they both decided to cancel.

Yes, I think they should've followed through. Since American Airlines retired its fleet of A330s in 2020, originally placed by US Airways, its widebody fleet consists of only Boeing aircraft; which could be problematic because of the profits>safety crisis, government oversight, quality control issues, and more which could lead to delays and affect safety; which is now much worse since the airline canceled the A350 order originally by US Airways. What was the point if Airbus had to send one of their A350s to fly over American's headquarters all those years ago?
