      I'm Colombian and everything said was obvious and exists in America too (Safety in Baltimore, New York, Chicago I feel is worse). I guess if you're a foreigner this might be helpful. But I get gringo prices too due to my accent, Colombians can even tell you're from another city in Colombia even.

    No place is perfect. And if you spend long enough time anywhere, you will get sick of it. I have friends all over the world, and they all are sick of where they are from. I guess it's just nature. South Americans are sick of poverty and corruption and see North America as a golden land. And north Americans are sick of the consumer culture and garbage weather, and see south America as a paradise.
    Every place gets crappy once you get rid of the rose colored glasses.

      @@markpatterson8622 definitely true, but I don't see the point of your post. We are talking about those willing to move countries in the first place. Most Americans don't even have a passport since it's the "best country in the world" lol. Yes, South Americans in general want to come to the USA since South America is obviously very poor and they want to flee poverty. But there are also people in the USA who are just like me. Fortunate enough to have money and/or a remote job, and want something more than living in a consumer culture within a nameless suburb. I understand South America isn't perfect (and I would know since I've already spent 18 months down there so I think I can speak from experience). While as mentioned, no place is perfect, I would STILL rather take a chance on a full time move to Cuenca Ecuador (the place I am aiming to live in) since the food, weather, culture, environment and overall quality of life are just so much nicer than anything I would ever find in the USA.

    There is some merit to the points you bring up but none of them will affect you if you adapt to the culture and environment. I am American and have a second home in Colombia very close to Rio Negro, outside Medellin. My wife and I spend about six months or more a year there. If you assimilate into the culture and the environment, you will find people to help you and work with you to making your transition much better. We have over time made good contacts with trades people that anytime we need a repair at home, these people we have developed a repour with will come and do the work, as promised and on time. Safety is no different than in the US. You learn what areas you can exist in and what areas to stay out of. Common sense. In our neighborhood we all look out for each other, and I know of no crimes occurring in the immediate area where we live. Bureaucracy, like in the US, you learn the system and find what works best. Is it different, yes, but nothing you cannot overcome. Again, knowing people can help you a lot. As far as Spanish goes, I think it is mandatory if you live in any country, you know it's language. I learned mine over the years from the streets in Miami, FL. I have improved greatly as I live in Colombia. I will never speak as a local, but it's not bad...LOL! These problems, I observed, are also experienced by Latinos migrating to the USA. The problem many Latinos have is that they come to the USA, and they live in small areas, in large cities where others from their country of origin live. They will only shop and do business in stores owned by others from their country. They want to live in a small micro culture that represents the culture they come from. I know a number of Latinos that do this and never learn any English but live in the USA. Sad, but true. As humans we migrate the world, but still have an inner desire to retain the culture we are born into. I will add that the USA is more accommodating in this desire for Colombians, than say, Colombia is for Gringos living there. It's all good, I love Colombia and it's people.

    This is one of the best analysis of Colombia I've seen in a long time. It's crude but true all the way.
    Most UA-cam references are generally good, but travel oriented about all the friendly and diverse people, topografical wonders, unique history, amazing food, political, social, economical references,recent modern intrastructure (too many malls), beautiful women (booties), etc...
    Which is ALL true but most UA-camrs only mention sporatically the street crime element as a "watch out for that" segment in their Colombia tourist trap coverage. Overall, the travel aspect is awesome and true!
    However, the "living in Colombia" reality aspect is another.
    In other words, the honeymoon phase can convince anyone in the world the following...
    You can do a zipline better in Colombia near actual cities than in Costa Rica, have better coffee than in Brasil, visit more architectually diverse cities than Ecuador, understand Spanish best and better than Chile, see more greener mountains then Peru, meet more ethnically diverse people then Argentina, experience "somewhat" better bureacracy/democracy then Venezuela, sip on coca leaf tea like in Bolivia, travel more square miles beaches alone than in the whole country of Uruguay, indulge in more attractions then Paraguay, see more original and better soap operas than in Mexico, see more beautiful women then in Central America as a whole, etc...
    BUT I like your synopsis on Colombia after the honeymoon phase, right on the money..
    You nailed it!
    P.S Colombia needs more "chinos!" (Koreans, Japanese, Chinese, Philipinos etc..)

      Ex-pat friendly? I'd respond by saying that if you arrive with currency, they'll gladly receive it. I spent a few days on the island and found the employees and services as accommodating as any resort (not typically a fan of resorts but was with a traveling companion who was content not getting too far out of his comfort zone). The authentic island outside of resorts is notably different and foreigners who don't speak conversational Spanish would likely be disappointed. Excursions to the smaller recreational island of Jhonny Key are worth a day trip with such an incredibly clear, 7-colored sea to swim in.

    I have spent months in Colombia and specifically Medellin over the years.. recently I was staying there, and I'm just done, tired of not being able to safely walk around the city, tired of air pollution, tired of crime, scams, seeing poverty everyday, people begging for money, horrible gringo expats that are highly toxic bros and trashy people.. tired of most women being single mothers, trying to get money from me, tired of the sex tourism energy, tired of door guys questioning who I have over (one disrespected my girlfriend and thought she was a prepaga), Tired of the horribly run "nice" gyms.. Body tech, where it took 5-10 minutes just to enter every time, because they don't know how to run a gym, tired of the noise (especially Poblado) the chaos of how things are run in Colombia.. I could go on and on.. The women are beautiful, but I prefer Blondes, so Poland is more for me and plus in those European countries can have more meaningful conversation..

    • @Bogotaeverything
      @Bogotaeverything Рік тому +3

      I could understand your points and that is why many colombians leave the country. As for the single moms, I could say that abortions are still frowned upon in this society and the men follow a toxic pattern of leaving both partner and kids as if being a dad was not a responsibility of its own regardless of the relationship with the mother and they select their girlfriends because of their looks, so once the passion is gone, there is no compatibility.
      I agreed until you said that the polish could have a more meaningful conversation as if colombianas were stupid or something. People in Eastern Europe are in general more blunt, more rough and less helpful or nice than colombians. If you want to date a beautiful blonde woman you have to have money. Eastern European women say that beauty is expensive and if you have good genes, you should have a rich husband.
      I lived in Russia for six years and there was a consistent pattern of the women moving to the Caribbean or South America with a latino guy that was on the uglier side and dump him for a guy that was rich and attractive. One of the girls even dumped her Peruvian guy here in Bogotá to date a better looking Colombian. They're extremely emotional but also ice cold when it comes to taking decisions for their own benefit.

      I was a month in Medellin and that was also my impression. The girls are hard work and unreliable. And the gym thing made me laugh, same here in Mexico. • @Ramsefall
      @Ramsefall 11 місяців тому +1

      If you're a digital nomad doing remote work for a US-based company then you are taxed and need to file as you normally would. However, if your sole source of income is Colombian, then you won't have to pay additional US taxes if the amount you earned is less than $108,700 per annum. Do a search on Foreign Earned Income Exclusion for a clearer and more up to date figure. I lived and worked there for four years from 2005-2009 with no US income (including dividends or other investments) and didn't even bother to file. The IRS never bothered me based on my assumption that I had no US income during that span. Colombian taxes are much less than the US, as are outstanding healthy insurance policies, plus there's no annual filing requirement -- your employer withholds all required tax and (private) health insurance expenses and you get your net income. I believe I had less than 15% of my gross pay withheld monthly to cover everything.

The system here i feel is a bit corrupted. Well, if you get into a serious criminal case you still need a lawyer but for things like drinking and driving, drug use, or physical fight... police will use these things to grab some money from you just to exchange you some convienience. I will agree with you in the fact that in general most Colombians do not speak English. My girlfriend who I met in Madrid and was a well known model in Spain, didn't speak any English. Which was good for me, as I learned to speak fluent Spanish by living with her and immersing myself in her language. She is from Ibaque, and we have travelled most years from Spain, to see her family and friends in Ibaque. I listened to your comments on Ibaque, it's an unusual place, in that it's a city but doesn't feel like a city. Ibaque is certainly not a tourist destination, primarily because very few people there speak English. There is almost a distrust of non Spanish speakers. I put that down to the proximity of Ibaque to what was then a very active region where FARC were in control. That is not true today, but when I first visited Ibaque, there was a real risk of kidnap and being held for ransom. I had one very close call which I won't go in to detail here, but in the early years of visiting there, I was always acutely aware that I was a potential target, and you never knew who you could trust. Today, I would say that Ibaque is a relatively safe city to visit, but like most of Colombia you will have a far more enjoyable visit if you have at least some basic knowledge of Spanish and the culture of Colombia. It is though a beautiful country, with a diverse geographic outlay that never fails to impress me.

      You cant dress nice and flashy(I would not recommend to dress flashy in Colombia), and go to the wrong side of town. Usually the wealthier areas are safer, but you still have to keep an eye on people. Furthermore, with women you have to be very selective. I do not even consider a woman in Colombia if they are not well educated, come from a good family background or aren't family oriented, and well spoken. There are always exceptions, but women with children are big no and red flag for me in Colombia.

    Most of the Central and S American countries seem a lot alike to me as an American who can't speak Spanish. Differences appear slight although they likely are very important to the ethnics who live there ? The same thing only different comes to my mind. The Spainards influenced them all in the distant past ? (except perhaps Brazil) A discomfort must set in when the novelty wears off and familiarity is missed ? Remember ''the grass always looks greener on the other side of the fence'' ?

    It's easier to get mugged in Downtown LA or in any borough in NYC. :) The States is by far way more unsafe than a city like Medellin. I'm not saying Colombia is super safe but you never hear about a school shooting in Colombia or someone going postal at a department store. Just sayin'. I've been living in Colombia for three years and I've never had a bad encounter with anyone. The issue with a lot of expats is that they go to cities like Medellin to find women and then essentially get scammed like you state in your video.

    Funny fact - Colombians usually blame the guilt on the Gringos and call them stupid or naive as they deserved to be rubbed, drugged, scammed, etc. If they really were that nice and kind people als always asserted they won´t come up with scams, lies, and sneaky ways to drain money out of you. In my opinion, it more likely proves the empathy, trust, and compassion of many Western people, that won´t question and try to help or even believe in the good in man. Traits, that can end up badly in Latin America. And yes of cause there are surely many more good people that will never harm anybody.

Gun violence in the USA is much more prevalent than in colombia. Almost all of the criminals i have met here use knives. If you are in a situation with a knife or gun pointed at you, it's very simple, give them what they want without a fuss and you will be ok.

There's indian, great vegan options, mexican, pizza, burgers... pretty much everthing you can get in the states, but i agree the asian option are lacking. As for security.....I'm never concerned about being shot with a gun by a mass murderer. People who come here attract what they are afraid of. The burden is on us to adjust if we want to live here. Colombians don't have to adjust us. It's their country. If you want a complaint....leave. No one is begging you to come or stay. These people are happier than most with all the cash. 😊
