Who is price gouging? Name them. The top 2 grocery chains after Walmart (Kroger and Costco) average a profit margin of 2.5%. That's not gouging. For every $1000 in sales, they profit $25.

As long as people will pay their prices, they will keep them high. Raw materials have come back down but prices are still high so they are raking in record profits. Ever since I’ve heard people complaining about grocery prices I’ve watched what people put in their carts. For the most part most people buy what they want despite the higher prices. This keeps prices high because people are willing to pay for it. I shop whatever is on sale each week instead of shopping what I want. It’s called sacrifice and too many people are unwilling to make concessions.

So some significant clarifications and guardrails were put in on the act from 1887 but without re-architecting anything.
Would you or I change more? Probably, but it did raise the bar a bit for objections and solidified some things that 45 tried to exploit.

I worked in the grocery business for 45 years ended at Kroger which is very bad it pays the lowest wage in the nation. And the CEO makes 28 million a year.

Who is price gouging? Name them. The top 2 grocery chains after Walmart (Kroger and Costco) average a profit margin of 2.5%. That's not gouging. For every $1000 in sales, they profit $25.
The companies that make the products. I don’t call it price gouging though. They raised their prices as raw materials and labor went up. As long as people will pay their prices, they will keep them high. Raw materials have come back down but prices are still high so they are raking in record profits. When the consumer no longer pays their price and they have excess supply, they will lower the price. In the meantime, I don’t buy name brand anything anymore

@@AbsoluteNut1 during Trump’s time, eggs were less than a dollars a dozen, gas was around $2 a gallon, my medication was $5 now $25, the grocery bills were $50 now $80. He didn’t have to do any price gouging because he had already kept the prices down that all of us could have comfortable living. My retirement paycheck shrinks 30-40% now because prices of everything are going up like crazy. Wake up!

Ever since I’ve heard people complaining about grocery prices I’ve watched what people put in their carts. For the most part most people buy what they want despite the higher prices. This keeps prices high because people are willing to pay for it. I shop whatever is on sale each week instead of shopping what I want. It’s called sacrifice and too many people are unwilling to make concessions.

I think Tapper is misinformed, or just intentionally playing dumb. Even here in the UK we have reports detailing the practice of price gouging! The definition being that prices are superficially inflated by the supermarket to a level _higher_ than what they would be due to inflation. Because supermarkets think the consumers won’t notice that additional increase as inflation is already driving prices up. It’s deceptive, it’s immoral and it should absolutely be addressed asap. Supermarkets currently rake in the highest profits in years.
