Sandy, Only known you for 45 years or so....really loved your truck since back when.
I still remember eating those wonderful applesauce doughnuts. They were the best; I haven't had one since 1959!!
Boy, if UA-cam could send smells along with these delightful images I might just have to lick the computer screen. I can still remember when the Helmsman would get out of his truck and open the back doors and that smell would just envelop we waiting kids. By then the truck that served our neighborhood was a windowless panel van with these incredible drawers in the back.
I remember the Helms truck, they used the best wood and marine hardware as well. I don't remember the "Whistle" but I remember a bellow with a long handle and it made a different sound than the whistle. Excellent job on the restoration.
I remember these. Great thing. Home delivery by a schedule. Great!
Big thanks from Southern Cal on the restoration, I will always associate that horn sound with a glazed donut..a 4 year olds memory in Redondo Beach., Cal 1963
Vstar Cruiser is it True you guys forced all the Black folks to have to swim at Manhattan Beach back then???
Wow, what a thrill to see one of my favorite company trucks. The Helms truck that I remember was a Very light yellow 1965 Chevrolet truck. Our Helms Man was Don. I was 11, and my friends and I would hear the horn from the beginning of the block. My friend and I would run down the street to Don and the Helms truck; and we’d ride on the rear bumper to our houses. Don gave us all a $1.00 credit a week. I’ll always remember Don, our Helms Man who gave me some of the greatest memories of my childhood. God Bless you Don !
They had the best chocolate donuts! My grandma lived right across from the bakery on Helms Ave.
Gone are the days. Awesome
Great history. Thanks for sharing this information.
• Cheers from Michigan
You bet!
I was doing some research on a memory of this institution of the Helmsman aka Helms Bakery. You confirmed my memory. Thanks
Glad you found it useful and entertaining.
very nice
Where I lived in the Silverlake area of Los Angeles our Helms Man apparently was a high volume seller and received an updated "Classic Helms Truck" for his effort. As I recall instead of the rounded front it had sharp corners and the windshield was tilted forward. I can't remember if Carl stated it was one of a kind or if several were constructed.
kool
I always did like Divco trucks & do want one someday
this is a cool truck
I wonder how many are left
I chased the helms truck on my bike when I was a kid
Thanks for you comments and for watching!
I've used a few Olsen Gaskets. Good quality.
Every Tuesday was lemon filled donuts.
Is the Helms Bakery DIVCO Truck for sale? In 1949, Terry was the driver on Harvard Blvd. Los Angeles, CA.
Iam really curious about the Helmans truck whistle. What did it look like and was is powered by Air, vacuum or electric???. I am gonna guess it was operated by a vacuum line from the engine
can stand while driving wonder if only such in world, sitting is unhealthy like fro truck drivers so why not stand, if redesigned to make room for legs down to same level as bottom of engine is now, , smaller cars ..standing not airodynamic , well, could sit while on speed, and top of cab come down , stand while slower or stopped and top goes up.
