    The more I see of your videos showing VW plastic parts the more I appreciate my 1990 Nissan with all metal parts. I cannot believe the motor manufacturers have fallen so low as to use crappy plastic parts that don't last. I suppose the upside is you'll ALWAYS have a job! Nice video and thanks.

    Water Pump started leaking 09 vw cc lux 2.0 tsi
    Just replaced platic coolant tank line & cooling hose flange. They both went out simultaneously. Also leaking from tubes off the firewall. Is there way to change just the connection without the entire heater core? Love the tutorials keep up the great job!

    The water pump in my 2012 CC failed. It was, as you mentioned, the gasket housing on the rectangle side. Had I known that VW was aware of the problem, and has extended the warranty to 120k, it would have saved me $900....

    • @rdarr40

    Just faced a leak issue in my skoda superb 1.8 tsi. Was told the water pump failed and needs to be replaced and probably the oil cooler might need replacement too. The estimate was too much at the dealership so went to a aftermarket mechanic. He replaced just the " gear ⚙ ", which wast the 3rd reason in ur video. I dont he diagnosed the leak. He could not procure an aftermarket water pump but found just the gear part where the small rubber belt is attached and just replaced that part. Now my concern is what if the gasket or the thermostat was faulty as well. Just been 3 days. Levels in coolant bottle still the same. So hopefully it was the gear ⚙ 😬

    Great video. Our 2012 EOS is going on its 4th pump after 85K miles. I don't have such a problem with a plastic anything, but rather I have a problem with such a bad design that has such a frequent failure rate. Between this and other major problems our car has had, not to mention the "dieselgate" issue in general, I can't imagine every buying another VW again!

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  8 років тому

      +Joel Freeman Sorry about all the water pump issues. That does suck.
      If I may ask, how you feel about "Dieselgate"? For all practical proposes your car has no ties to that. Does that situation impact how you feel about the brand? (I am not being a jerk here, I really want to know)

    • @joelfreeman5899
      @joelfreeman5899 8 років тому +2

      +HumbleMechanic You are correct, my Eos, is not a diesel. However the degree of corporate malfeasance, the two faced "we will cooperate fully" and then do anything but, and the institutional arrogance are all reasons (compounded by my Eos experience) is why I'm turned off from the VW brand. The sophistication of the deiselgate shows that it wasn't a bad player or two, but a much larger intentional method to lie, cheat and steal. I won't reward that behavior. I know other companies lie cheat and steal, but when they are caught, and in fact big time, they should pay!

    Thanks for the video! Thankfully my water pump is still going strong at 63k on my 2010 GTI. Something that people on some forums have had fail is the timing chain tensioner. Have you seen a lot of these failures or is it fairly un-common? For an early gen MK6, would you suggest getting it replaced with the newer part after powertrain warranty is done?

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  9 років тому +2

      The 2.0 you have is probably the newer tensioner. It was updated at some point(I forget the exact time)
      I have seen a few. It is still a semi involved job to replace. But it's cheaper than a cylinder head.

    Many thanks for the videos, they are so helpful...
    I thought I'd throw in some comments regarding my situation. I have a 2011 GTI. 114,000 miles. Just got the P2015 so I'm installing the new revision intake manifold and replacing the injectors with all new while I'm in there, along with a good carbon cleaning. (My luck, I don't replace them and they start going bad one at a time... No thanks, I'll bite the bullet now and just get it over with.) Knowing that 114,000 miles with no water pump issues is like a miracle, I thought I'd do some research and just get it out of the way now since I have to pull the intake manifold off anyway might as well save myself the labor of doing it twice. Going with an all-metal unit from Graf so hope that resolves some of the issues with the water pump fatiguing over time.
    Anyways, if the water pump was "trash", I wouldn't be at 114,000 with no issues at all. I'm not saying people don't have issues, but I'm not sure that they aren't induced by other problems like lack of maintenance, engine oil leaks, improper replacement, using chemicals on engine, etc,.
    So I'll have new intake manifold, injectors, carbonless intakes/valves after cleaning, new water pump and antifreeze, oil change, spark plugs... replaced PCV a few months as well as new R8 coilpacks all around. Should be good to go for a while now that I've gotten all the big 2.0t wear/maintenance items out of the way once this is done.

    Charles,
    Love your vids. Regarding these water pumps, how is VW handling the warranties on these? For a 2012 GTI, would that be the basic or drivetrain warranty? Viewer ajlbeer must have had this covered on the drivetrain warranty since his is the 2011.

    Hi Charles, I have a 2010 Audi Q5 2.0t - It's had the timing chain failure then faulty Piston ring replacement (yes, hard to swallow as we don't have USA's legal support here in South Africa for this latent defect but Audi paid 70% of all costs so there was some help). Anyway it's over a year since this was done (now on 153000km and now there is a high pitched whine coming from near the centre top of the engine. You can replicate it by just whistling through your teeth like and engine revving :-). Audi glibly said it's the turbo and handed me a massive quote. On further visits to turbo, steering and VAG specialists (plus watching tons of youtube vids) they say it's the balance shafts or water pump. My question - would a failing balance shaft make this noise (it follows the engine note exactly, does not get louder or softer with the aircon or any other time (except when revving the engine) or is it just the water pump (bearing? - there is no leak at this point) and should I replace the pump. Balance shaft replacement versus water pump replacement cost differences are big and I don't want to overpay if I can help it. Love you vids - they have been very helpful on my journey with this problematic Q5...

    This is a good video, Thanks I have a 2012 Q5 (81K miles) with this engine and I removed the wp today. I had a huge water leak down the back of the motor and was finally able to track the source back to the pump. I will say it is rather difficult to get to. I do have a follow up question. How do I remove the pulley on the balance shaft that drives the pulley so I can replace this small belt with the new pump? I was able to slide the old belt off the pump but can not remove it from the driver pulley. Can you help?

    I have a 2012 Tiguan 2.0 turbo manual. I was losing coolant, and found a leak at the water pump. I replaced the water pump with an oem part purchased at a vw dealership. Now the leak is no more, but the newest problem is that the engine light is coming on and saying the engine is running cold. The dash temp gauge does not move at all even when engine is hot. Lower radiator hose is cold, upper get hot as normal. Thought there might be air in the system, have applied pressure to the lower hose, it bubbles in the tank, but nothing seems to work to get the temp gauge to work or the lower hose to carry warm coolant. Car runs fine, no overheating or other issues that I am aware of. Any suggestions?

    as an Automotive tech for over 20 years, i've seen the worst that Germany has to offer. VW is right up there with Mercedes and BMW. And lets not forget the disaster that Mini was. Often times,the owner of these vehicles are the ones who can least afford to have it fixed. VW, Audi, and BMW have these slip-on coolant hoses. Well, when you remove the hose, the o-ring inside has been compressed for so long, that if you don't replace the complete hose assembly, then your chancing another water/coolant leak. I did a water pump like this, along with the tensioner for the drive belt, and the cost was over $2200. Absolutely ridiculous. These are the Pinto of the new Millennium.

    I had my starter motor on my 2011 GTI(65kmiles) Go bad , it was stuck and wouldn't retract, so I had that replaced for $450+ and when I left my buddy's shop my car overheated after I got 3 miles away. I had no check engine light and I was able to very carefully drive it back while making sure to keep it from overheating too much.
    He and I believe its the water pump. Is there anything else it could be ? It has plenty of coolant , doesn't leak and has never had any kind of overheating issue. I have a water pump on order for it. Such a weird circumstance , what are the chances of having a major problem one after the other. ugh.

      Try dropping your oil pan and cleaning out your collector / oil pan with brake clean. My wife had the check engine light / overheating issue and that is what it turned out to be.

      +Ben Zabinsky $1000!!! That seems kind of high. There is an updated pump for the CBFA engine, but I think the CCTA is the same. Be sure you don't have an oil leak as well. I would call VW and see if they can help you out with the pump.

    •  6 років тому

      I'm a tree The newest Toyotas use 'plastic' oil filter housings {and who knows what else is plastic}. I used to have a 2011 Camry, and after only 100,000 miles, the transmission started failing. Also, all the suspension components in Toyotas are cheap CRAP. After only 100,000 miles, my insurance actually totalled my entire car just because ALL the suspension components were failing {even though the car was in cosmetically brand-new condition}. I will NEVER purchase or associate with a Toyota product ever again.

      Sean Johnstone plastic impeller means that if the pump jams up, the impeller breaks instead of taking the timing belt along with it.

      Yeah, but if the pump jams up it's probably from a seized shaft bearing... plus a metal impeller usually won't crack and fall apart like the plastic ones do.

    This video helped me realize the REAL cause of the failure this water pump in my car. Short story is that if you use Gunk engine degreaser on this engine, it lays on top of the gasket, under the intake manifold where you can't rinse it off. Three days later the coolant all blows out where the gasket swells and bulges out the side of the housing. It took two water pumps to figure this out.
