Gulf Guardian Award 2022: Home System Inspections in Decentralized Wastewater Areas

Home systems are exempt from permitting under NPDES permitting system. By conducting home system inspections in Louisiana watersheds, over 214,000 gallons of water were improved by repairing the discharge from 347 ATUs and removing 82 septic tank discharges. In all, the project calculated a removal of 609 lbs/day of BOD pollution to receiving waters of Bayou Liberty. Repairs and replacements were completed without the need to complete formal enforcement procedures and in a cooperative manner. The program team was able to change the metrics from a 59% initial failure rate to a 94.9% passing rate!
