The whole time I watched this video, I couldn't help thinking of Hank Morgan who was the main character of A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. His first official act, on his first day in office was the creation of a patent office, explaining that you couldn't have a successful nation without a good patent office with good patent laws. Ava Philip - a patent is a way for a company or person to lay claim to an invention. They submit massive piles of paperwork to the government, showing how no one has ever made such a thing before AND they give proof to show that the invention is both unique and that the patent would be defendable. That means that things like throwing a stick for your dog to chase and swinging side to side shouldn't have been given a patent- everyone does those things and there's no way to defend such a patent.
If the government approves, then you get your patent. It can take years to do. Once you have a patent, if someone else were to try to, for example, make and sell a butt kicking machine (lol), then you could sue them. (My dad holds over 50 patents, so I've heard about this process my whole life. It's truly boring stuff. I could never work in the patent office, ugh.)
