    The rivalry between Epoch and Bandai in the barcode gaming sphere was certainly interesting.
    1991 saw the release of the incredibly basic Epoch Barcode Battler.
    Bandai noticed this and created two barcode game systems in 1992 - the Datach Joint ROM add-on for the Famicom as you've presented here and the Super Barcode Wars handheld which was designed to compete directly with Epoch's offering.
    In the same year Epoch released their sequel handheld, the Barcode Battler II which featured connectivity to the Famicom (albeit for a single game) and the Super Famicom (via another add-on adapter which connected to a controller port).
    Epoch then went on to create 3 more handheld barcode gaming units, two of which had no barcode scanner and a third which was a football game (The J-League Barcode 11) which could also output to the Famicom and Super Famicom as it used the same data transmission protocol as the Barcode Battler II.
    Given the form-factor of the NES, a western version of the Datach Joint ROM would likely have functioned like the Aladdin Deck Enhancer in terms of the mini cartridge placement, but with the barcode reader sticking out of the front of the console.

      @@eadweard. Yes, but I just think that’d be the more realistic concern if the device were to cause me concern at all. Even thirty years ago, barcodes were on everything. Kids wouldn’t need their parents to buy them stuff to get more codes; the stuff already in the house would last them a while and incoming packaging would keep them going. I’d probably see it as mostly harmless fun if I were a parent in those days, but I might be worried that they’d go dumpster diving if we lived in town or walking distance to it.

I don't recall if the ad showed up before the start or during the middle of this video, but I simply skipped it and didn't think much of it. However, when the video started to talk about the Epoch console, I realized that the EpochTV ad was likely shown because mentioned of the console in the video. I doubt EpochTV and the Epoch console are from the same company, but it just shows how certain ads are chosen to be shown - it likely showed the Epoch TV ad because the video talked about the Epoch console.

    Another reason this did not make it to the West - it would have had to be redesigned to fit into the front of the NES rather than the top of the Famicom. The Sufami Turbo could have made it, but by then Nintendo were really emphasising region locking.

    • @merman1974
      @merman1974 2 роки тому

      @@ScooterinAB it's more than that, because of the locking mechanism in the original NES you can't just slot anything in. It's a lot of work for a limited market - because properties like Dragon Ball were not as widely recognised in the West there wasn't the impetus/demand to release it over here. You are talking a lot of money setting up a new production process for what would have been a small target audience.

    • @ScooterinAB
      @ScooterinAB 2 роки тому

      @@merman1974 So how did the Game Genie work? Besides, Bandai wasn't some questionable Chinese bootlegger; they were a major company that had worked with Nintendo. It would have been easy enough, given their manufacturing capabilities and their ties to Nintendo, to figure this out.
      I doubt its lack of a non-Japanese release had anything to do with a small Western audience. Coming out at the end of the console's life and with only 7 games made for it, 5 of which were and still are nova-hot properties, the addon was most likely a complete failure in Japan. It being released in Japan not 3 years before the NES was continued in the US is a deathblow in Japan, considering that was functionally the end of its life already. A 12 to 18 month delay to test the market would have meant the Datach would come out when or after the NES was discontinued in the US. Already a failure in Japan and with a rapidly shrinking market, there would be no point in releasing it anywhere else.
      This has nothing to due with technical complications not brand popularity.

    one of my elementary school buddies had a Barcode Battler. Probably due to the region no barcodes worked except the provided cards.
    Up until this day I remember it as one of the most bizarre electronic games, if you can even call it a game, since the best barcode always wins and it's the only significant player input that actually changes how the game turns out.
    As for me, I owned a famiclone DBZ/YuYu cart with all the barcode shenanigans replaced with in-game character selection (albeit primitive and very faulty)
    It was indeed a strange time to be alive

    One other nail in the coffin of all the barcode games was the rise of quality home printers and computers. People were analyizing what the barcodes did and reverse engineering ones they could print out at home and thus max out stats and so forth. Making barcodes of your own was already easy anyway. So that blew up any sort of competition idea or need to scan anything from a store. You just print a million hit points and you are done. The play value rapidly dropped below zero and the card reader games ended up in bargain bins alongside the Cuecat, another device wrecked by barcodes. Who knew a barcode could be so powerful? Maybe somebody should make a game around that idea. Oh wait....

    Weird thing there is the English on the unit says Datach, but the Katakana says De-Ta-Ku, which makes me think that maybe 'Datac' (without the H) would've been more accurate. I mean, I guess this never left Japan so it's not the world's biggest deal, but it does ultimately mean English speakers who don't read Katakana could be led to pronounce the unit's name in a different way. I spent 6 years hitting game shops in Japan and I don't think I saw one of these. I can't imagine anyone heard of it.

    I'm assuming that at some point Nintendo was receiving a cut off this. That's the only way I can see it being really good for both sides. If people trusted the Bandai name, they'd be likely to buy the device. The company would probably make more then the cut to Nintendo would cost them and Nintendo would save on the cart costs while still having a control what happened.
