This American team consisted of inexperienced young talents lacking in team game and had a worse fundamental basketball education than these Greek players. Also, Diamantidis, Spanoulis, Papaloukas and Zisis probably had more basketball IQ in average than any American teams guard rotation has ever had. When it comes to American-European basketball thing, we are one as Europe. We don't think about differences. Just like Zeljko Obradovic told "Welcome back home" to David Blatt in Euroleage preseason meeting. He is also considered a European coach in Europe because he became a coach in Europe even though he is American. And as European basketball, this was maybe the proudest moment. I know this is years ago but yes. Even as a casual football fan being Canadian in this day and age it's a struggle to find a legit way to watch Ligue1 or Bundesliga, just so I can watch Jonathan David and Alphonso Davies. In 2006 it would be stupidly hard to watch the Greek players play professionally in any way, youtube was a grey zone for sports highlights, you couldn't even rely on that. Diamantidis is one of the best players in European history and so are Papaloukas and Spanoulis so don't think that you lost from a bad team. The good days are gone and it will take a while to get so many talented Greek plays together simultaneously. Still, we played amazingly and deserved the victory more than ever!! To USA fans/supporters: stick with the facts: your game was pathetic and lacked intelligence and system, so it was a fair defeat. Too many roids do not guarantee the victory. In all of our losses our team average ages is either teens or young 20s. Never have we lost with USA being a older experienced team. Our younger B Team will lose to the world's A Team every once in a while. Guess how the rest of the world would act during those times? Over half of the 2006 players on Team USA weren't even on the NBA all-star Team. If I remember correctly Chris Paul was a rookie in 2006. Melo has yet to make the NBA All-star team and both lebron and melo were barely even old enough to legally have a beer. Some of our best players that were Allstars in 2006 were Kobe, Tracy McGrady, Ray Allen, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, Gilbert Arenas, Shaquille O'Neal, Allen Iverson, Chauncy Billups, Vince Carter, and Paul Pierce. USA sent 2 all stars on a roster of 12 in 2004. That's what we call our B-Team in USA. Tracy McGrady, Kobe Bryant, Jason Kidd, Vince Carter, Ray Allen, Shaquille O'Neal, and Kevin Garnett were just a few of our best all stars in 2004. Lebron Wade and Carmelo were all rookies and just hit their first full calendar year in the pro's hence the reason why none of them made the all-star team during this year. Look what happened at the 2008 Olympic when we sent 9 All stars on a roster of 12. 2012 and 2016 were also 9 Allstars out of 12. In 1992 we sent 11 out of 12 with arguments that the 12th spot should've went to either Shaquille O'Neal or Isaiah Thomas. We knew our team was weaker in 2004 and 2006 but when we send our A Team like everybody else I actually feel bad. So stop trying to troll and enjoy your gold medal.
The sad part is that Greece lost to Spain in the final. I didn't see this game nor the final, but the word was that Greece had given all in thus game and had nothing left. I see this game as the real final.
Man, the difference between this team and the 2008 Olympic team was significant. This team played predominantly iso sets, no offball movement, no answer to zone defenses, and didn't force turnovers.
My observations: USA had no movement on offense, complained to much, played poor defense and in general didn't respect this Greece team. Greece wasn't afraid from the tip and gameplanned better, where as USA seemed to believe they just had to show up and they'd win. The gap between NBA players and the rest of the worlds players are not as big as u think, even from an athletic standpoint. Those Greek guards were driving by Allen Iverson and Wade for layups, two guards who are considered the quickest in history. Food for though

Having a bad tournament doesn't make any player a bad shooter. Just like losing one game doesn't make that American team less talented than the Greek team. But this was no luck. This American team consisted of inexperienced young talents lacking in team game and had a worse fundamental basketball education than these Greek players. Also, Diamantidis, Spanoulis, Papaloukas and Zisis probably had more basketball IQ in average than any American teams guard rotation has ever had.
When it comes to American-European basketball thing, we are one as Europe. We don't think about differences. Just like Zeljko Obradovic told "Welcome back home" to David Blatt in Euroleage preseason meeting. He is also considered a European coach in Europe because he became a coach in Europe even though he is American. And as European basketball, this was maybe the proudest moment. Diamantidis is one of the best players in European history and so are Papaloukas and Spanoulis so don't think that you lost from a bad team. Every single time that Team USA has lost the Gold Medal in Basketball we had the younger less experienced roster with raw talent. In all of our losses our team average ages is either teens or young 20s. Never have we lost with USA being a older experienced team. Our younger B Team will lose to the world's A Team every once in a while. Guess how the rest of the world would act during those times? We will happily take a loss but when the world trys to ride on it in such a shameless manner it's funny that they call us arrogant. Do you even know why 1992 The Dream Team was created? They got tired of grown men's acting like hotshot while beating our 18 19 year old kids. The Dream Team was a result of your arrogant.
USA stars play more basketball than any other nation. Not only do we play FIBA World Championships and the Olympic but we also play the toughest league in the world call the NBA. Even Charles Barkley talked about this. He said that USA All Stars can't play in all of them all the time after playing the NBA every year. Our old retirees can handle your leagues even after ware and tare from the NBA. We have to take a break every now and then and that's when y'all should be going for the gold.
Both 2004 and 2006 were The USA's younger B Team. Over half of the 2006 players on Team USA weren't even on the NBA all-star Team. If I remember correctly Chris Paul was a rookie in 2006. Melo has yet to make the NBA All-star team and both lebron and melo were barely even old enough to legally have a beer. Some of our best players that were Allstars in 2006 were Kobe, Tracy McGrady, Ray Allen, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, Gilbert Arenas, Shaquille O'Neal, Allen Iverson, Chauncy Billups, Vince Carter, and Paul Pierce.
USA sent 2 all stars on a roster of 12 in 2004. That's what we call our B-Team in USA. Tracy McGrady, Kobe Bryant, Jason Kidd, Vince Carter, Ray Allen, Shaquille O'Neal, and Kevin Garnett were just a few of our best all stars in 2004. Lebron Wade and Carmelo were all rookies and just hit their first full calendar year in the pro's hence the reason why none of them made the all-star team during this year. Look what happened at the 2008 Olympic when we sent 9 All stars on a roster of 12. 2012 and 2016 were also 9 Allstars out of 12. In 1992 we sent 11 out of 12 with arguments that the 12th spot should've went to either Shaquille O'Neal or Isaiah Thomas. We knew our team was weaker in 2004 and 2006 but when we send our A Team like everybody else I actually feel bad. So stop trying to troll and enjoy your gold medal.

Man, the difference between this team and the 2008 Olympic team was significant. This team played predominantly iso sets, no offball movement, no answer to zone defenses, and didn't force turnovers.
My observations: USA had no movement on offense, complained to much, played poor defense and in general didn't respect this Greece team. Greece wasn't afraid from the tip and gameplanned better, where as USA seemed to believe they just had to show up and they'd win. The gap between NBA players and the rest of the worlds players are not as big as u think, even from an athletic standpoint.
