  • Olympus C-3040 Zoom Camera Review | Retro digital Camera Reunited
    Back in the year 2000 I used one of these Olympus cameras at work. Back then this was a £700+ camera, quite a hefty sum back then but it did have a few tricks up it's sleeve. An sharp f1.8 lens, 3.3 megapixel sensor and a 3x optical zoom made for a little camera that was a joy to use but is that still the case today?

    Great that you managed to re unite Andrew. Some good images there. 3.3mega pixel. 😲. Wow. Great share mate. 👏🏻. Take care. 🙏🏻. Watto.

      Yeah 3.3mp was pretty groundbreaking at the time, Canon's EOS D30 DSLR which came out about the same time had 3.25 megapixels. It was fun to look back though I don't think I'll be replacing my modern cameras with it. Thanks for watching Watto 👍.

    Those shots came out beautifully! It definitely seems very ergonomic and an excellent workhorse in its time. Very nice review my friend!

      Thanks for watching, it was certainly a camera I was happy to use back in the day.

    Great review! My first digital was a 2001-2 Kodak Dc5000. 2.1 mgp,compact flash. Still have it! I enjoy these types of cameras! Fun to bring out and use just to have fun!

      Thanks TSTS, My first digicam was a Jenoptik 1.3mp LCD model back in 2001, I keep looking for one, I wasn't spectacular by any means but it was the novelty of having those images straight onto the computer.

    Wow back in 2000 I was stomping into the new millennium with a brand new APS film camera......I could only dream of owning a camera like this. Amazing to think where we are today. Nice trip down memory lane and funny blooper reel at the end :)

      Thanks Dave, my workplace was an early advocate of digital cameras, it inspired me to buy my first, a jenoptik 1.3mp camera about a year later, it was pretty rubbish but got the ball rolling. The bloopers happen all too often, I sometimes leave the video until he's gone outside 😄😺

    Great blast from the past andy. Love remembering the old days. What we had to live with. Life was hard lol. As the great Monty python sketch said. "You tell the kids these days and they don't bloody believe you" lol.
    Great video and love the cat. A star for sure.

      Thanks for watching Simon, yes today's cameras are much better, hell, even today's phones are much better than early digital cameras but I still think this one is pretty good for a 22 year old tech.

      We'll call that artistic licence. We never did find out who broke it, nobody confessed but I had a few suspects. Thanks for watching.

    Despite the cons you mentioned, 3.3 megapixels, a 1.8 lens, a camera able to produce nice bokeh, and a fantastic photographer...what else do you need? Fantastic photos Andrew! I watched this on a 80 inch TV and the photos still looked good, not sure how the print quality would be, but really makes you wonder why we want these 50mp cameras if you are doing a ton of print sales. If just posting to social media, 3.3mp is apparently just fine! Really enjoyed this one mate!

    • @AndrewWaltonPhotography

      Thanks for watching Paul, with the f1.8 lens I did want to try and get some bokeh shots in Aperture priority mode and see if I could grab a panning shot or two in shutter priority at low speed. Back in the day we probably used this in auto all the time which clearly was a bit of a waste. The downside to the camera was in strong sunlight it did want to blow out the highlights but I could reduce that with exposure compensation which is impressive on such an early camera.

    Awesome review Andrew! Love these retro cameras & the image quality is surprisingly good😀👍 Those memory cards were huge ( not the capacity lol )😀 The cat is the best😂😂😂🐱🐱

    • @AndrewWaltonPhotography
      @AndrewWaltonPhotography  2 роки тому +1

      The image quality is still a surprise, I have tested a few retro cameras with similar pixel counts but the Olympus wins hands down. The lens is particularly nice. I ended up having to buy a card reader with a Smart Media card slot on it in the end, serial cables must have their own special place in hell. The cat is the best but a complete nightmare when recording 😺

    I just bought an Olympus Evolt e330 so I will soon be playing with that. I think Olympus cameras are really underrated and are superb.

      Olympus cameras are pretty well screwed together - they're still a huge brand in Japan which speaks volumes. I have an old e-410 which did good service as a back up camera for my Nikon for a few years.

    Nice review Andrew. Who needs more than 3.3mp?! You got some great images with it - I particularly liked the one at 3.52 , I'm a sucker for anything graphical. Fun trip down memory lane too, I'd forgotten about Friends Reunited. Different world back then! 😊

    • @AndrewWaltonPhotography
      @AndrewWaltonPhotography  2 роки тому

      Definitely a different world back then. It was a good camera in its time, still passable for Instagram pics now. The shot a 3.52 works quite well as a mono in the harsh daylight. Thanks for watching Robert.

      Cheers Paul, ours did serve us well back in the day. Our cat, Batman, is a bit of a handful at times, I thought I'd do some bloopers to explain why the video seemed a bit disjointed, he put me right off cue several times.

    Points and shoots well decent ones are more fun than lugging about different lenses and are capable of fantastic images. I can see the law of diminishing returns with cameras and lenses so I refuse to get go down that rabbit hole.

    • @thegroove2000

      Its the operator, not just the camera that allows one to take well-framed good images.

    • @thegroove2000

      And also megapixels are not everything and with the likes of Topaz Gixapixel, there is a workaround for larger prints.

    • @AndrewWaltonPhotography
      @AndrewWaltonPhotography  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for all your comments. I'd rate sensor size over megapixel count any day although modern cameras are better at coping with smaller sensors than they were. This little Olympus has such a nice fast lens on it, it does make some nice images.
