    Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

That was a great interview with two solid, ethical, family men and hunters who each do extraordinary work.
I have been hooked on Weatherby's ever since my grandfather gave me his South Gate California 300 Wetherby when I was 14. I now have a few different Weatherby rifles but I am missing the 307, that might be my next purchase.

I feel the same way. In fact my dad had a nice Weatherby bolt action with a glossy stock and bluing that I spent a lot of time with. It always performed and looks amazing and well made. I always thought that I would need to buy me a Weatherby to celebrate that era in my childhood as to celebrate and support as well this great American company that still pushing for the best, and for the fastest Made in America!

A great American company! So glad Adam had the vision to move from CA to WY. If they'd stayed in CA, who know what might have happened to the company. CA is such an unfriendly state with ridiculous firearms laws and insane cost of living. Pretty awesome for the governor of WY to work with Weatherby on this move.

One of the things that I recently noticed is that for decades, Weatherby has specified a tighter max bullet diameter tolerance than most cartridges. This is because the chambers of most Weatherby cartridges use sections of very snug freebore to make certain the bullet is held in line with the bore as the rifling is engraved. This helps with accuracy and usually reduces dispersion (which is why modern precision cartridges like the Creedmoor and PRC series do it too). It also allows them to get higher velocities without going overpressure.
The SAAMI specifications, for example, of most 30 cal cartridges like the 30-30 or 308 Winchester allow ammunition to use bullets up to .309" diameter. Allowing that extra slop in the spec puts limitations on some dimensions critical for accuracy. This can be a problem if someone has a tight match chamber since ammo loaded to the SAAMI spec can have bullets slightly too large for their chambers. The 300 Weatherby Mag, on the other hand specifies a max bullet dia of 0.3083", which allows them to use a freebore of only .3084" in production chambers. Only recently have some other cartridges like the 300 PRC and 300 Norma Magnum adopted the tighter bullet spec.

I ABSOLOUTLY LOVED the 8 or 9 years that my wife and I hunted together. We could never afford Africa, Or even out of state hunting. But it was DEFINITLY a very special time together. Guys, IF you can convince your girl to go out, and hunt with you, it will create a bond like no other. Hunting was never the same after she had to quit. I still enjoyed it, but it just lacked, well, her. Now, we are both disabled, and can no longer can hunt. But we will always have those great times together.

Thinking back to the 1940s-1950s many hunters were still packing lever-action rifles conceived in the 19th century. Into that environment, Weatherby brought modern high performance rifles and ammo.

Tis might of changed my opinion of Weatherby products.
In the 80's I watched hunters show up in camp with 7mm, .300 or larger Weatherby rifles and chamberings.
Some, told me their rifle did not need precautions before the hunt...like checking zero, it was sighted in at the factory, nonsense.
They had drank the Weatherby coolaid. These were client hunters.
It soured me on the glossy mark v. I would take along an old ,battered /06, for insurance .
This was refreshing talk Thanks, Ron

After having to pass up a shot while hunting Elk in Colorado when I had a 300WSM but the animal was standing in a thick brush with only the top of his head showing, he was 375 yards away and a real monster. After a bit of investigation I settled on a 340 Weatherby used, after I received it I put a Vortex scope on it. When Barns was making the MRX it had become my favorite bullet. With 250 gr bullets the accuracy at 600 yards was unbelievable.

I strongly identified with Adam's description of California during his grandfather's life and his decision to move the company to Wyoming. I grew up farming, hunting and fishing in Southern California, left in 1964 to go to college in Virginia and when I returned in 1971 I didn't recognize the state. Physically it was the same, but culturally it had changed immensely. I left for Colorado a year later and never returned.

My uncle bought one of Roys guns before the mark 5 even came out and my dad hunted with it because my uncle couldn’t handle the recoil! Being a 60+ year gun collector and having owned well over a hundred Weatherbys through the years I dreamed about buying a Mark 5 and when I did in the deluxe model it was not only a gorgeous rifle but surpassed anything on the market! 6 decades later and the still are what dreams are made of for a lot of young hunters! I have owned every model and just about every cartridge except the 460 which I have never had a desire or need for and their guns have always performed as good or better then anything on the market! Their Vanguard is one of if not the best gun on the market in their price range that being said the Mark 5 is a fine gun but for their price has slipped over the years for their price point and has lost a lot of sales to the foreign market the last few years. I think their newer belt less cartridges could get a lot of that market back if they keep developing those cartridges and keep a close eye on what the public is wanting out of their rifles today which has changed a lot compared to say 20 years ago. The general public today don’t feel the way about guns the way they used too and so it’s going to be a lot of work and effort to get a more favorable attitude towards rifles but it can be done by the way we treat peoples perception of hunting and keep it a sport that fathers and sons and grandsons can be proud of and enjoy in a ever changing world!

Best guest ever Ron, I enjoy all Adams hunting videos and podcasts, solid guy building amazing rifles and new cartridges. I hope you have Adam on again, maybe you 2 could go on a hunt, try out a new weatherby rifle/cartridge. 😊

My late 80's Vanguard is still the queen of my collection which includes 700's and a Waypoint along with newer Vanguards. I would like to see a 307 on the Peak stock and a CF barrel

Great video Ron! Really impressed with Adam and Weatherby as a company… We need to support American companies as much as we can! I’ll be purchasing a Weatherby as my next gun…maybe in a future 7mm-378 to celebrate their 80th year in business?…. I can dream

Each to his own but I have a weatherby and I still appreciate it's beauty over its chambering. I hope weatherby still continues to make beautiful (wood stocked) rifles.

I have a .243 Mark V Hunter and it has a fantastic barrel. This gun shoots .3s and .4s with a handload that I was lucky enough to develop with the first bullet and first powder I tested. I'm a Weatherby fan.

I'm currently in my mid 60s and Weatherby has been known to me for many years, but I never put one in my ownership until lately. With lots of pleasure, I currently have a Mark V Backcountry 2.0 in a 280 AI . I like where Weatherby is heading and wish them the best in a very changing industry.

I owned a custom maark V in .300 Weatherby back in the eighties, and that is one rifle I still wish I had not sold. It was rediculously accurate and that always makes a rifle fun to shoot. :-)

I have several Weatherbys both rifles and shotguns. I have never ever been let down by them and their customer service. I took the Vanguard Meateater in -06 to Africa last year and had excellent results on 12 animals out to 700yds. I now have the new Meat Eater in 6.5RPM which I'm taking to New Zealand in May for Red Stagg. I'll, as always, be using my 300 Weeatherby Mag for free range Audad in TX next year in the Mark V action. I'm a true Weatherby fanboy as rhey would say, bit results, quality, and customer service are top tier..and most importantly they are a God fearing family and put that 1st and forward. I'll continue to support them.

307 weatherby is on my list..I grew up in the late fifties early sixties my father was one of a handful to have a 300 weatherby east of the Mississippi back in the early days of weatherby.. I remember around Christmas he’d received a weatherby company catalog..Roy’s office and big game mounts, as a young kid that was it.. now at 70 I’m still weatherby all the way.. When Weatherby came back to mark v’s being made in the U.S. I bought one with a very low serial number and it’s dead nuts on.. great interview Ron!

Super great video interview with the future of Weatherby.
Had a 308 Vanguard, wood. Never forgot the day at the range I was smoking a 2000 buck set up 700 Rem in 308. It lived 165 btips and packed full of H380. Loved my "nise busting" 300 Wby Mag!!!! Lol
Hydrostatic shock, very important. Killed a groundhog once and never hit him, 308 125gr bullet. Blood out his ears and nose at 85 yards.
I am a speed lover too. Amazing what a 75gr bullet running very fast made heart and lungs mush on a deer.
Enhance your Vanguard line with the traditional high speed cartridges like the 220 Swifter. I have dies for 257 Mag but afraid I would get carried away and smoke the barrel!!! Lol
Great to see dedication to the industry, honoring the great name of Weatherby and another generation with confidence of longevity.

I worked for The Dukes best friend and John loved him Weatherbys and was proud to own them and let others know that! It’s about putting your product in the public’s face and keeping it there! It’s about making hunting honorable in the public’s view not just to hunters! It’s funny Adam mentioned about the stock splitting! I had that happen with the first deluxe I got and Weatherby replaced it at no charge. I bought my father one of Weatherbys first Accumarks in the new cartridge 30-378 and he was always a big fan of Weatherbys but he just loved that gun and took many elk with it! California has turned into a gun hating state and was a smart idea to move out of there and into a place where people love hunting and guns too. If I can make a small suggestion it would be to try and make ammo a little easier to get in your cartridges because I see it holding back sales because of availability of Weatherby cartridges! I know it has for me over the last few years !

Ron, I had an interesting conversation at the range today I thought you and the listeners would enjoy.
I was at the range today staying sharp after I found out I drew my elk tag here in Arizona. Anyways, I’m there shooting my 6.5 PRC and 300 Win Mag and there’s a gentleman a couple benches down shooting a 7 Rem Mag with the 162 ELDX. The two of us start chatting a bit discussing our upcoming tags. He asked what I was shooting there and I told him it was a 6.5 PRC. (That’s the rifle I had on the bench at the time) he kind of rolled his eyes and I laughed and said “I know I know but hey, you’d be surprised how close that 6.5 with the 156 Berger EOL comes to the 7 with a lot of classic loadings like a 160 Partition, accubonds, even the 162 ELDX, on paper” he then gave me a bit of a lecture about how there’s “no replacement for displacement, frontal diameter, on paper ballistics is one thing but on game is another” etc etc. I kind of laughingly said “man I agree that’s why I shoot my 300 win mag with 200 accubonds for elk” to which then he started “educating me” on how his 7 actually is a little better due to ballistic coefficient and sectional density, etc. 😂😂 I just found it funny that he automatically discounted the 6.5 simply for being a 6.5, then used the same arguments folks do for the 6.5, for his 7 vs the 300. I didn’t say much, just kind of laughed along and parted as friends. Anyways, just thought that was pretty funny.

I have a weatherby vanguard 257w. Bought it for under 500 bucks. Threw a free floated bell and carlson stock on it and i have a rifle that shoots 1/2” groups on the regular with choice ammo 101lrx’s and 110 gr accubonds. Its about 3/4” gun with the regular weatherby hornady interlocks. Its the number one we all grab when we go hunting. My wife has a custom camilla in 308 and i have 2 weatherby compact vanguards for younger kids. My son has a 375hh custom dgr. All are very accurate and easily sub moa. The mark 5 is just great to work the bolt on and a true top tier gun. Great rifles!

Always wanted a Weatherby and finally got my hands on a .257 in the early 70's. Unfortunately I fell on hard times and had to sell it a little later.....broke my heart.

I see Knives of Alaska is a sponsor. I bought one of their coho knives years ago in aus8a. My favorite fillet knife till this day. Nice to know they are still around!
