We kit-bashed our own Warhammer 40,000 Chaos Ork - Da Hellboy! |Duncan Rhodes

- Converting miniatures is one of da funnest parts of the wargaming hobby and it's a fantastic way to create something unique! Inspired by conversions from an old issue of White Dwarf, we asked ourselves could a Warhammer 40,000 Ork fall to Chaos and what would this look like? So, armed with clippers, file and greenstuff, we decided to find out! n this video we create this custom miniature by making use of bits and pieces left over from previous projects and videos to make a model that is totally unique. We talk about how an idea can form and how to make an initial plan, then explore what can happen during the build and how to deal with challenges as they arise. The result is 'da Hellboy' - the biggest, meanest, and most corrupted ork there is.
If you enjoyed this video and you would like us to make a full painting guide for this character in the future, then let us know in the comments below!

Of course we want to see it painted!!!!!
well you cant let us on a cliff hanger like that! You have to paint it now!
Can't wait to see you paint it Hellboy-Style ;)
With the new terminator kits... I'd say Tyberos of the Carchordons... and using actual dreadnought bits to make the largest known astartes... and pay homage to the Red Wake not seen yet. Cheers!
Yeah, I'd like to see him all painted up!
I love this, definitely would love to see him painted too!
You've given the Ork a good name for a Khornatic Ork Boss! You've nailed the kitbashing.
Conversions like this is one of my favourite parts of the 40k hobby.
There is nothing more satisfying than lovingly converting and painting a character to lead your army into battle.
Or making a squad of handpicked veteran warriors that character can lead into glorious combat.
Like, say a mob of Chaos Nobz for Da 'Ellboy! so they can krump some of dem dere Beakies, and Umies, and Pointy-eared Gits on their way to krump dem Boys wot kicked 'Ellboy out of 'is Klan.
Or a lovingly converted Chaos Lord and a squad of Chosen as the centerpiece of a Chaos Space Marines army.
And I would love to see Da 'Ellboy fully painted.
Thanks for the video! Nostalgia really takes me back! 😉Great idea for a twist.
Amazing work as always, folks! the kitbashing process is some of the most enjoyable hobby to watch, and I can't wait to see Da "Ellboy in all his crimson glory! 🤘
This is a fantastic kitbash! Pete the Wargamer would approve I think! How you described the lore for the character combines so well with how it came out which I think is a great indicator you nailed it. Would love to see Da Hellboy painted up!
You reminded me of the good old time I was enjoying reading the new white dwarf every month.
Green skin and armor that blends up to khorne-y red would contrast awesomely, or have his green skin be faded and turning red on his chaotic side. A lot of interesting ways to go
Looking forward to seeing him painted and hope you do more conversions
Yup, want to see it painted! Nice conversion.
That's exceptional Duncan that looks like exactly like forbidden lower🌹
Great stuff - I happened to be in the middle of "modifying" some Kroot as I watched this! The only thing I'd suggest is maybe a blob of milliput inside the body cavity; it gives the parts you're putting together a bit more surface area to stick to, so it's more stable and less of a Kinder Egg of parts glued to one another. Plus if you're lucky any excess will get pushed out through any holes, giving you a head start on green stuffing the gaps!
Beautiful orc, looks like he will collect many skulls
This was inspiring and a perfect concept. I would absolutely love to see him fully brought to life with a few thin coats!
15:36 you can also mix in about 25% pre-mixed Milliput for even more pliability (and a harder final cure)
15:45 save that semi cured stripe and mix it into a batch that will just be for filling (no detail sculpting) and save a few cents! 😄
Definitely off to an excellent start there. Paint will take this the rest of the way, for sure
Loved the conversion, would equally love to see it painted up.
He looks amazing. Add me to the list of people wanting to see him painted 🤩
Definitely need to see this painted!
Great looking Ork, hope to see how you paint it in a future video.
Glad to see you branch out from two thin coats with your new 'one thin film' conversion series. In all seriousness, I absolutely adore this, have always loved the idea of Chaos Orks and this does them justice, would love to see this bad boy painted.
Fantastic video! I'd love to see more of these kit bashes
Will do. We loved making it too
This turned out so cool! I'd love to see you paint him
this is crazy impressive. kitbashing is one of these things i really want to try, but it always seems so intimidating. you just made it seem easy enough for me to try it…someday!
Please paint this conversion it looks really great! I really miss this side of warhammer, the stores used to be really encouraging of conversions in the past, but now they do not encourage it at all. In the past i remember people showing up with custom made Ork Trucks made of Tonka toys and really interessting kit-bashed hero characters. Its really weird that that is now vanished from GW stores. I was told i could not use my Seraphim in a casual in-store game becuse they were on 40mm bases and not 32mm bases... really depressing how allergic to change they are now.
What a tease. I wanted a Red Skinned ork covered in beaten brass!
Oh yes, soon. Time was not on our side this week lol
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA I eagerly await the video!
A painting tutorial is a must! This has inspired me greatly! 🤘
Definitely want to see this guy painted
Converting models is the thing I've loved most about the hobby and what keeps me in it.
On the 'Ell Boy theme, what if he fights alongside a Chaos (Tzeentch?) corrupted Water Caste Tau?
Great job! I used that model and the Iron Jawz Brutes to make my World Eater’s Terminators
Yes I would love to see it painted ! it's always painted that conversion are awesome, you have no idea what that it's a conversion.
Thanks, our latest video is how to paint him :-)
I realy like how chaotic orcish this mini came out after the kitbash. To not seeing how it get's painted would be not right.
I kinda have a weird 40k/Star Wars themed crossover I had in mind, basically I'm thinking of converting some Chaos corrupted Stormtroopers by using the Star Wars Legions Stormtroopers and then adding some Chaos bits and possibly give the Chaos Stormtroopers some gnarly trophies
Da ell boy must be painted! Gork, er um Khork demands it.
You know what would be cool, firstly yes paint this Ork coz we all luvz em! Secondly, could you paint like a 90's Karl Franz model or even 90's Nagash! That would be cool, we're all in on 40k now but in the old days it was mostly Warhammer fantasy. Anyway my other suggestion is you Vs a 90's Golden Demon winner, pick a winner and try and get as close to it as possible using the same model using modern techniques. Anyway, love the channel, keep up the good work.
Be great to see the end product
Orruk Megaboss is a great starting point for kitbash a custom orc character. I turned mine into a mekboss in mega armor.
Very nice
Really wanna see it painted
Really enjoyed this :) Chaos Orks seem really cool! :D
When talking about the tongue, it really sounded like Duncan was saying “tong” every time 😂😂
🤣🤣🤣
Full of course we want to see you painted😊
Sorry spell check is a pain in the bum oh, of course we would love to see that beautiful miniature painted. Nice to see I'm not the only one that still looks at the old white dwarves or inspiration.😊
Duncan kit bashing! More, please!
Forgive me Sacred One, but I believe we'd all love to see you paint this boy
I'd personally like to see you do something *really* out there for a conversion. Preferably something AoS themed. Maybe a Cities of Sigmar Cogfort. While that is something we might get a model for in the future, considering the new CoS range. I'd still love to see you turn the old Steam Tank into a modern Spider Tank. Since that's how they've been depicted. Another idea might be a Mortek Ballista for the Ossiarch Bonereapers. Those are things in the Lore we haven't gotten a model for yet. Or if you *really* want to get spicy, consider making a Kharadron Overlords Krontanker. It is a ship that's supposed to be quote "more than ten times the size of an Arkanaut Ironclad." Just a few ideas to throw out there for you.
Wow, thanks. There are some great ideas here for sure
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA Thanks! I tried to think of some good ones, so I'm glad you like them!
I picked up the two Orruk carrying a big spear with the free monthly mini on a whim, but don’t currently have fantasy orks, so thought to myself “how do I make this fit in with my 40k mob?”
So, after a little kitbashing, the two are carrying a Redemptor Dreadnought’s plasma cannon with a Big Mek-designed manual trigger mechanism.
i need to see DA 'ELL BOI painted up
Gotta paint this one up for us!
Can't wait to see the paint job on this! 😊
You and me both!
Hey guys. Good video but just a reminder to keep an eye on your mic and audio levels. If you're worried about dynamic range, try using a compressor or even compander to pull up the lows and drop the highs. 👍👍
This looks awesome, please give us a painting tutorial.
Also, would you be able to show us what your take on a chaos Ork blessed by tzeentch or slaanesh would look like?
Looks Very cool !
Yes, I'd like to see it painted.
It's really cool. 👍
I want to see this fully painted
Would love to see it painted please! I believe the sculpting tool is called a Lecron carver.
Excellent video! I'd love to see it painted!
Hell yeah kitbashing!
Thank you for the inspiration
A nice surprise to see you doing conversions and a great result! For people wanting to do something similar, I recommend a round file for this sort of work, rather than a flat file
Round works great and so did this flat one. Better than we expected tbh. We did use a round one for smoother corners
He'll be even more killy...
As the soft guitar music plays on in the background...
😂😂😂
Da old boss iz back an' 'e's bigger, meaner, an' fightier dan eva!
Outstanding
you really need to paint it. It looks awesome!

Duncan Rhodes conversion academy
Nice lol
Paint 'em
paint it!
Algos for the Algo God
HE NEEDZ DA PAIN-t
Love it! Thought the horns would be a bit much, but they're absolutely perfect. Would love to see this bad boy get painted!
Agreed. We were concerned about them at first but they came out looking perfect
Please paint! I'd be really interested in your take on hell boy, but an ork, but chaos. Most of Hell boy's color is drab, except his skin, so how you take "drab color inspiration" and punch it up to chaos/ork excesses would be a fascinating lesson on color usage and interpretation. I've rewatched your votann space suit video for the exact same reason. Thoughtful discussion of inspiration and interpretation.
Yes, we cannot wait to paint it. Keep an eye out soon
Glad you take divergence path to do conversion stuff, can't wait to see the next conversion you will do
More to come!
I love conversion work like no other, please do more.
It sure is fun
This turned out really cool, I would love to see da 'ell boy painted up. It would also be killer if you guys considered doing these every now and again because this was a real fun and informative video to watch.
We will be in the future for sure
That’s amazing!!! Can’t wait to see it painted. Will you be doing any tutorials for Cities of Sigmar? Would love to see a Grey Water Fastness scheme ❤
Will do next week once our boxset arrives
