Captain Nero stood on that bridge and killed 6176 people including two scipio Generals. and the man still lives to win more battles, his current record is 3-1 with the only lose costing the Scipiones a general. this man is a roman killing machine, if he is not to become a general his unit should be sent to Rome to fight under Julianus Vatinius himself!!!
He was given a job: hold the bridge and defend Carthage. He did so to the best of his abilities beyond even what a Julianus Vatinius would have managed. Twice he beat back the Scipii wolf. Twice he was offered promotion and relocation to a better command. And twice he turned it down. "I was told to hold the bridge. And hold it I shall." is the response he sent back. His men were heroes to the people of Carthage, but the battles wore them down. When the third attack came, Captain Nero knew his men would not hold the bridge again. And yet his men lined up to do battle with the wolf once more. "Our orders are to hold the bridge to the best of our ability.", he said to his men before the battle. "See to it when word reaches Carthage that they know we have done so."
*Achem* WE WERE TOLD TO HOLD THE BORDER AND THAT IS WHAT WE DID HONORED WERE OUR ORDERS IN DESPITE OF OUR FOE! Nos! Nos mos resistere et mordere? Mordere dura! Quoniam omnes sumus in facie? Nos! Nos hos arma sequi ferrumque pugna! Fortis pugna! Resistere et quod iustum est? You know, I bet you didn't expect Resist And Bite's main bit to be google translated into Latin and posted here. But now it has been.
I was actually in awe when their general died. Not since FO4 Survival's Long Sleepless Walk have I been so tense then relieved with every encounter. Captain Nero is the kind of guy Julianus Vatinius would respect.
Captain, you have my respect. Your heroic deeds were a match to the 300 Spartans. They even exceeded them as you were able to beat them back many times against all odds.
I'd like to remind everyone that Julius Caesar took over the Roman republic with one legion. Comparing the XIII legion crossing the rubicon to this massive world war is hysterical. I love this series.
Jon, I've only been here since... I'd say part 17 of Rome Total War (this one, not the older one), and I haven't seen much, but I love what you do, I love the way you could just stop in the middle of a battle just to make sure the water is flowing in the right direction, and you've probably taught me more about the ancient world in 42-ish hours than school has done in a year. Here's to you, and may you continue making videos that help people get through the week!
Glad to see Captain Nero live to fight another day. He may not be Julianus Vatinius but his feats on that bridge shall be told in the history books for the ages.
I have my end of Secondary Education exams at the end of this year. Honestly this series has been such a lovely support and break entertainment for me. Thank you so much!
If on the 4th bridge battle you smashed the cavalry in right as he was overextended, you could have simultaneously killed the general and gotten a cavalry charge against Hastati, potentially causing a route, since the Velites at the back were still routed. But hey. Captain Nero. The ballsiest Captain to ever command an army. Seriously, that guy was such a badass. He should have songs written about him and his name etched on the Roman Halls of fame for being the man with the biggest steel balls.
Marcus Maxentius, and you'd be any better? I'm sorry, but when was the last time you fought on the battlefield? Like a true Roman! Enjoy 'governing' the plebeian filth of your worthless city while you can. We're coming for you...
Well, I am the son of Julianus Vatinius! (The greatest Roman that has ever lived) So naturally, my intellect is far superior to that of your average 3 year old.
Tonight! Tonight! Tonight! Uh... huh... Strange... I feel like I've heard that somewhere before... Anyway, Tonight we dine on the blood of our foes for the glory of Zeus!
All hail the Brutii!! True Romans, unlike those pathetic pretenders, the Scipii and Julii! We Brutii are strong, true men, who bear the true title of Roman! From the mighty Aulius Augustus, to the terrifying Amulius the Wrathful, to the greatness that is Julianus Vatinius, we Brutii will conquer Rome and crush all those who stand in our way! Even the combined strength of our old "allies" and the Senate will not stop our advance! WE ARE BRUTII!!! WE ARE ROMAN!!
Yes if the Armenians try attacking us then we will be ready! But surely they will not dare to challenge me, Spurius Victor, Dragonslayer! And my army of pigs...
Subscribed to follow this series I found over a week ago, nice to see you've gone over quarter of a million subscribers, with stuff as great as this you deserve it
Jon, stick a fort down in the Alpine pass, let the Julii throw themselves at towers, troops and a palisade. You can reinforce from Mediolanum faster than they can from Lugdunum.
Who would win in a fight, Evil Jon or Julianus Vatinius. The Monster of the Mojave, Killer of the Capital vs The Regal Roman, The Chosen one himself. Inevitable Gnoming vs Bald is beautiful.
Invader Zim evil Jon but only because evil Jon is better than any assassin and would not fight with honor, in fact evil jon would probably have to use 2 stealth boys at the same time, one to evade each of julianus' ever vigilant eyes, for evil Jon is the spector of death it's self, the cold wind in the night leaving a knife in the back before returning with the morning sun unleashing a storm of bullets to be sure, perhaps evil Jon is the only creature that could end such a noble life but even she would fear what would happen if she failed.
About that bridge battle for the end road for Carthage, Ur men in almost every battle there have been in guard mode and don't fight to their fullest when you want to charge. You may already know this but they also face the wrong way after they charge.
IMO, you're underusing your legionaries in bridge battles. Testudo formation is so powerfull for clogging them as they get out of the bridge, and forcing their units to scatter. It makes them stay longer on the bridge, thus getting more out of your indirect fire. Its also easier for your regular infantry to fight the ones that manage to squeeze through the units in Testudo formation, and if the enemy push too much, its a perfect opening for a cavalry charge on the side. Anyway, the main thing here is that you want them as clogged as they can get when they are on the bridge, where you win with your indirect fire, and having units in testudo blocking the path is quite a thing for conserving numbers - something that is quite handy given the ammount of Scipios that are flocking to Carthage. Cheers and keep on spreading good ol Roman civilization! Ave Julianus Vatinius
I feel like Captain Nero may start developing PTSD from slaughtering so many fleeing Romans, his nightmares consist of with sword slice the backs of fleeing romans over and over again til the guilt wakes him up.
One thing a bit too late, but maybe memorable for later, for the bridge force. You could have had the general step out of carthage each turn to look for additional mercenaries to add to the bridge force. :)
After several victories, Captain Nero has finally been forced back away from the bridge, but fear not for Captain Nero not only survived he has also killed one of the Scipio scum's family members. Captain Nero's army will regain strength and crush the Scipio scums.
Rest with dignity, fallen Roman. Captain Nero, as Hero of Carthage, shall have busts placed in all of the great halls as a reminder of your men's bravery. ET HONOREM! ET HONOREM!
i just want everyone to know that Captain Nero regrouped in the final bridgebattle- he didn't flee in panic, he retreated per his orders from Julianus Vatinius DAMNIT
24:40 Jon: Ya know what, release the dogs Brutii commander: RELEASE THE HOUNDS Cowardly Julii front line soldier: AW FUCK THIS NOISE I'M NOT A PHARAOH I'M NOT DOG FOOD!
NOOOOOOOOOOO One of my biggest gripes about your series was that it was too easy for you and you never actually lost a real battle, but now I changed my mind D': RIP Captain Nero. Personally, I like him even more than Julianus in my heart now :')
Captain Nero. You might have lost the bridge, but you are a true hero. I look forward to seeing you in action at the defense of Carthage. If we survive this, there are several medals in your future, and if i have my way, a promotion to General Nero for your service. Signed, Galarius Brutus
SPQR are unbribable (that's a word (no it isn't)) and Roman Cavalry are light cavalry, they're the next step up from Equites which is why they're so crap one on one with anything.
Could it have been worth letting Placus Menenius flee the first bridge battle so that he could live to apply his -2 to morale (potentially more than that if routing made him pick up a trait like coward) to future attacking armies?

I have to say... Every single turn he ends I yell for him to move archers to the Carthage bridge army, but nooooo... Let them get worn down and chased off. :P

HelixTheAlmighty don't you dare disrespect Julianus Vatinius like that
He would make a damn fine Roman, if he weren't filthy traitorous scum
im not crying, my eyes are just sweaty
HelixTheAlmighty Thank you

-Captain Nero: slightly better than pig handlers.- Oink!- Oink!
Don Snoller Boo isn't crying. He accidentally fell in a puddle.
*SQUEAK!*
I said I was sorry...
When Jon talks about his honor when he betrayed all his allies and Roman brothers.
Nothing like a virtual civil war to end the evening.
I just found myself cheering and chanting for Nero's victory on the bridge.
Thank you, fellow Roman. The troops need all the morale support they can get
Captain, you have my respect.
Captain Nero has similarities with mass effect 1 captain Kirrahe.
cpt Kirrahe- "hold the line"
captain Nero- "hold the bridge"
Jon's commentary during the last bridge battle gave me chills of epicness.
Hey Jon. Congrats on the 250,000 subscribers! Here's to many more years of ManyATrueNerd!
Huzzah!
Many A True Nerd to Jon! a man who made me find multiple of my favourite games of all time

Thank God Julianus finally got there. You`ve been making him do far too much rome-ing around ;)
Marcus Hillier It shows how lackadaisical Julianus Vatinius is. In the event of a civil war he'd rather take a cruise of Mare Nostrum.
Marcus Maxentius, and you'd be any better? I'm sorry, but when was the last time you fought on the battlefield? Like a true Roman! Enjoy 'governing' the plebeian filth of your worthless city while you can. We're coming for you...

Invader Zim: Someone get Screwattack on this!
I was starting to worry this video wouldn't come today, so glad it did!
I don't understand why he doesn't use fire arrows more on bridge battles
congrats on 250,000 you are with out a doubt my favourite youtuber right now, next stop half a million
I love that the before the final battle of captain Nero the loading screen gave the quote "valour is superior to numbers." Shine on captain Nero.
i bet you captain Nero is Julianus vatinius' long lost brother
That would be the greatest honor in the world. Maybe a promotion could help uncover my lost lineage
Captain Nero and his troops represent the epitome of Roman strength and courage. Well done, lads!
Well done on the 250,000 subs, the only sad thing is knowing you deserve so many more.
I am living for these bridge battles lmao.
I wonder who cleans up all the bodies on the bridge. It's not like they'd just leave em there XD
“For how can a man die better than facing fearful odds,
Than for the ashes of his fathers and the temples of his gods” Horatius/Captain Nero
About that bridge battle for the end road for Carthage, Ur men in almost every battle there have been in guard mode and don't fight to their fullest when you want to charge. You may already know this but they also face the wrong way after they charge.
Is that Jon's first unintentional loss of a battle?
Captain Nero you truly are man worthy of Rome. Dare I say an equal to Julianus Vatinius.
IMO, you're underusing your legionaries in bridge battles. Testudo formation is so powerfull for clogging them as they get out of the bridge, and forcing their units to scatter. It makes them stay longer on the bridge, thus getting more out of your indirect fire. I feel like Captain Nero may start developing PTSD from slaughtering so many fleeing Romans, his nightmares consist of with sword slice the backs of fleeing romans over and over again til the guilt wakes him up.
OMG that battle at 36 min!!!!! on the edge of my seat!!!!
A sad day indeed... But, I look forward to seeing Captain Nero rise again! Thanks for the video!
Captain Nero was a true hero of Rome.
One of the highlights of my Wednesdays. Youse a cool dude, Jon.
One thing a bit too late, but maybe memorable for later, for the bridge force. You could have had the general step out of carthage each turn to look for additional mercenaries to add to the bridge force. :)
you guys are great, i normally dont bother with the comments, but i love what happens here! good job jon, great community
Yes! I've finally caught up with the series! Now it's time to wait and suffer until the next episode...
please conquer the entire map jon
Hoss20 That's actually what I'm doing. I didn't give the other families the chance to take any cities outside of Italy.
So when the Juli retreat, it's dishonorable cowardice but when you retreat, it's because there's "no point" fighting to the end.
After several victories, Captain Nero has finally been forced back away from the bridge, but fear not for Captain Nero not only survived he has also killed one of the Scipio scum's family members. Captain Nero's army will regain strength and crush the Scipio scums.
Never forget Captain Nero. One day the history books will speak of his mighty stands for the honor of Rome.
Rest with dignity, fallen Roman. Captain Nero, as Hero of Carthage, shall have busts placed in all of the great halls as a reminder of your men's bravery. ET HONOREM! ET HONOREM!
Congratulations on 250,000 and congratulations on the start of your removal of the non true Romans.
The dogs CAN SWIM?! I had no clue lmao it's hilarious
Jon, remember to use your fire arrows on those bridge battles
I think even Leonidas would commend Nero's defense of that bridge.
Captain Nero, the hero the Brutii needed but will never appreciate.
Captain Nero didn't retreat, his horse got spooked and his foot was caught in the stirrup.
why am i getting genuinely emotionally invested in these roman generals
Because RTW is an excellent game.
Captain Nero, you are a Roman worthy of the Vatinius Cross.
I would imagine that some units with basically no armour, naked fanatics for example, might be able to swim, probably not however
18:41 Goes into a panic attack and starts having a seizure at sea because he doesn’t have his buddies. 🤣
i just want everyone to know that Captain Nero regrouped in the final bridgebattle- he didn't flee in panic, he retreated per his orders from Julianus Vatinius DAMNIT
"The middle east is peaceful at the moment" That's a phrase nobody has ever said before.
oh captain my captain
the Scipi lost three armies and 2 generals to take that bridge. Nero, you will be remembered. foreverthat will be known as Nero's Bridge.
This series has the best comments on youtube. I wish I could like this video more than once. #ManyATrueRoman
Hestati to the left of me,
Libyans to the right
Here I am
Stuck ona small bridge with you.

Jon: Ya know what, release the dogs
Brutii commander: RELEASE THE HOUNDS
Cowardly Julii front line soldier: AW FUCK THIS NOISE I'M NOT A PHARAOH I'M NOT DOG FOOD!
God I love bridge battles.......and bridge ballast
NOOOOOOOOOOO
One of my biggest gripes about your series was that it was too easy for you and you never actually lost a real battle, but now I changed my mind D': RIP Captain Nero. Personally, I like him even more than Julianus in my heart now :')
Should have named this episode "a bridge too far"
Captain Nero. You might have lost the bridge, but you are a true hero. I look forward to seeing you in action at the defense of Carthage. If we survive this, there are several medals in your future, and if i have my way, a promotion to General Nero for your service. Signed, Galarius Brutus
Bit off more than you could chew? You have to get Juliannus's army to relieve the bridge or you could loose all of Italy
Thousand years later, there'll be a monument written Romans been killed by the bridge.
Indeed, Many A True Roman
MANY A TRUE ROMAN!
27:01 Elephants can swim to you fool!
captin nero made julianus proud
SPQR are unbribable (that's a word (no it isn't)) and Roman Cavalry are light cavalry, they're the next step up from Equites which is why they're so crap one on one with anything.
ALL HAIL LORD JON
Sull-E No,no,no. Jullianus is the Leader (lord), Jon is simply the new Roman God of war.
Zach Antes Are Jullianus and Jon not one in the same
Well, I certainly hope the archers took some nocks.
Another upload! Yes! This series is like crack to me.
I played 100's of hours of this game back when it was new I never knew the dogs could swim lol.
Could it have been worth letting Placus Menenius flee the first bridge battle so that he could live to apply his -2 to morale (potentially more than that if routing made him pick up a trait like coward) to future attacking armies?
I was worried that there wasn't going to be a Rome today!
still waiting for that to happened because it looks more of a buffer zone, hopefully those armies of victor and Vatinius march on to the city once they've landed home
What a wonderful birthday gift!
Captain Nero was the real Roman today, he will be in the history books.
We will set aside a nice section for him in our true history books where we describe how he wet himself and ran away.
And I shall write another section about how the Senate doesn't actually do anything productive, other than loose money and counger up Greeks to fill it's offices!
Dionysios of Babylon I thought you were more experienced with filling orifices...
Many a True Congratulations on the quarter million subscribers
And Many More
Using skirmishers as chasers when the enemy routs is an alternative for light cavalry. They run fast. :D
Given, better win first.
I think you forget theat Admiral Lucius is transporting some units
i suspect captain nero is julianus vatinius' brother, wich would both explain why he is such a great leader and also why he wasn't promotet, as most brothers dislike eachother
Nonsensical. A duo of brothers can subdue any foe and overcome any obstacle
I have to say... Every single turn he ends I yell for him to move archers to the Carthage bridge army, but nooooo... Let them get worn down and chased off. :P
Captain Nero's last words: "Hodor"
You may want to get captain nero on a boat.
John do you remember Steve rest in pepperoni
