    Stumbled across this by accident. I'm always amazed when I watch professionals at the top of their games. The guy was out there in a sweater and collard shirt and not an ounce of cement went anywhere except exactly where he wanted it to. Amazing talent...

    Many years ago I lived in a brick house built in 1948. The brick was backed with veneer block wich was also set on the top of the foundation. The only problem was the small front porch and steps. The joints failed and I had to clean the bricks and relay them. That chore took me two or three days because I had never used mortar before. I dropped the steps about 1/4" to the front so water would drain out. 55 years later the bricks are still holding.

    UK standards are different to us. However it doesn't really matter taping or rubbing bricks down into position. Rubbing is better.
    One other thing. With timber frame construction you should leave a gap under the window sill for shrinkage of the timber frame. The bricks won't shrink when the frame goes down. the window sill/ frame will push up on the bricks which can lead to leaks around the window

    He put the black paper up on the wall but he has no flashing or weep holes on the bottom of the wall to let the water that gets behind the wall a place to get out. Also he uses no cavity drainage material. He is nailing the wall ties over an inch above the brick. This gives the tie room to move before it gets tight and does not let the wall move away from the house. Rowlock sills are really not approved by the brick institute as they leak to much. Also he has no flashing below the window and the windows were not installed correctly as there should be flashing around the perimeter of the window. When he lays the sill brick he does not compress the mortar between the bricks he slides them in to close together. There should also be a gap below the window to the brick. The wood in the house will shrink in years to come and the brick will not which will cause the windows to become hard to open and close. I could go on but you get the drift. I have 40 years in the trade and I have built them all.

    • @harrypehkonen
      @harrypehkonen 7 років тому

      I wonder if the flashing, ties, etc. were changes that came in after the 80s, which is when this was apparently recorded.

      Yet only a certain percent of ppl in the world can look at ur comment and half ass understand anything u just said. This guy on the video is old school. Sounds alot like my boss man when he speaks. Only that ol dude here on the video is not cursing. My boss mans favorite word was motherfucker and fuck. Probably said it more than a sailor. I'm kinda young I'm 24. I had to learn to shut the fuck up and listen when he got on to me. Day by day I got faster and faster. From learning how to spread mud fast to learning to keep my mud spreading consistant. To laying a brick to the line. All while not lossing patience. And sufferring long hot summer mississippi days where my body couldnt t bare it. Some days no one would show. So I got to where I could be out by the sand pill where the mixer sits and have the near perfect morter mixed and in the wheel bar and pushing that mf which felt like a whole football field and getting to where brick. mud boards and entire set up is and cant stop cause mud boards need mud. Pretty much now I can get all this done in about a couple minutes. Have every mud board full. Then grab my trial which is always nice and clean. And spread mud pretty damn fast once I reach the end I lay brick backwards . and make it easier on him. Yes I am young and I'm mexican. Never miss days. I am going on a year working with him . he pays the mud man more then me. I steal get payed what he started me with so I make 350$ for 5 days 8 hour days with no lunch. Wide ass open speed. Why am I still working there idk to be honest. Only job that will pay me hint hint I'm Mexican. My situation is complicated. If that answers ur question but. Being payed low. And putting up with an entire year of heads aches bumps bruises and arthritis has made me into a better man. I look and think about things differently. Feel wiser . I probably wont ever get a raise. But maybe one day things will change. I probably could run a crew and make better money. I'm letting god lead me. I'm just gonna keep learning what more I can from him. Back in the day ppl around here say no1 ould lay brick or even just plain out out work my boss. But if I ever find work somewhere else. Doing whatever. I know I'll at least be if not the fastest but be considered the hardest worker out there. I can probably make it anywhere. Dont ask me why I'm telling y'all this shit. Hell maybe someone will read this and maybe hire me. If plus I also got 20 years expierience in English I sound like a damn redneck when I speak so if. Anybody need a damn good worker let me know.

      Why is this the only comment on the topic of garbage flashing clearly exhibited here. There's house wrap shown in the video so obviously not having it isn't an excuse. Who gives a flip if he wants to tap on his precision instruments, it's his level, I don't tap on mine but clearly the vapor/water management fail here can be seen from a mile away.

      Keep up the good work ethic. It's rough work being a brick layer, yeah, I'm an old woman who started working masonry on my own pos house up north. I love masonry. I sold machine tools all my life and lifted what the men lifted and I was always a skinny little thing, still am. Spine is going but damn, I won't stop 'til I'm dead. Know when to advance yourself so you can earn a decent living. Sounds like you're on the road to success. Keep your nose to the grindstone, don't stray off the path and you will always be successful. Those words I played over in my head for thirty years. I was one of the highest paid females in my industry. Yep, I said female. Work safely, stay strong.

    • @plannottruster
      @plannottruster 4 роки тому +1

      robnarley mix the mortar up real good to the desired consistency, wait 5-10 minutes, mix it up again and add just a little bit more water if needed. The mortar will be much more workable and plastic. The 5-10 minute process is called “slaking” or “letting the mortar slake”.

    WOW! This guy is good! One of the most important points that he makes concerns furrowing. Although furrowing is taught, practiced, and accepted as the "right" way to lay mortar, he explains exactly why furrowing is forbidden by many architects and engineers. Just remember, neither bricks nor mortar are water proof. Both bricks and water absorb water. If anyone ever tells you that you need to furrow your mortar, just refer to the points that he makes: 1.) Furrowing does not fill the holes in the brick, and 2.) It creates a horizontal void that is ideal for collecting water, which is exactly what destroys brick work over time -- especially in areas of the country where we have a melting and freezing cycle in the same day (Colorado, Wyoming, Montana --- places that I have lived and worked). The water collects in the day time, then it freezes at night. This causes the water to freeze and expand, which then causes the joints to crack, which then lets in more water, which eventually leads to crumbling of the brick work.

    Not all old brickies still have game though. We had a couple on site months ago on a big job in Haslemere and they were so unbelievably slow. Claimed to be the tits but couldn’t even lay to a straight line. Embarrassing

    This guy does everything the same as we did including the setup,layout, and bricklaying.
    We did our ties a little different- bend tie at hole near end less than 90 degrees- place on top of wall -tie will extend beyond face so it needs to be bent back making sure that completed bend is 1/2” inside of face of joint- remove from top of wall and hammer bend flat.
    Make up several the same way on setup plank. Use 8 galvanized nail and locate nail slightly above brick and drive slightly downhill. When nail is too high tie will flex.

    Also, the header on the third course of that lead wasnt even touching the level. Gotta get down and look.

    a true artist, they make it look so easy, I've laid brick once and it was a nightmare, I had morter everywhere but the joints! the one thing I don't like here is the fact the holes show around the window. wish they had "solid" bricks for ends.

    lol this is actually kind of rtarded
    first of all a good bricklayer rarely ever need to use the level, only ever so often
    second theres methods and tapes to get the bond right, also you dont need any of it cause ur eyes dont lie
    this is a diy video not a video for bricklayers.

      This was in 1992 and that was the standard at the time. It wasn't even code where we are at it was still up to the home owner or builder and some chose to skip it all together to cut costs. But we are in the second driest state in the country so mold isn't an issue unless you let your sprinklers hit the house or have an undetected plumbing leak.

    I’m building a brick 12x12 storage shed with brick, motivated after watching you and Mike Haduck’s videos. What if I am not laying against a building but just a single row how would I lay the angled bricks to go under a window, if the window has yet to be place into opening?

    No damper? I couldn't tell if you put weepers in. And what's the point of the paper if it doesn't extend past the top of the brickwork to be covered over top by the next trade? Maybe it doesn't rain where it was built.

    Great teacher and entertaining to watch. I thought the furrowing was to provide two 'edges' for the brick to lay on, better than laying on a hump! But I take onboard the comment about why the frog is there, even though I reckon the trapped air would prevent full engagement of the mortar with the frog.

  • @adamchandler8872
    @adamchandler8872 7 років тому

    I understand a deep furrow is not great but the real reason bricks are perforated was because it saved the manufactures money and made them lighter.
