The mix of modern and old style varies from community to community. I see Amish at the Cleveland air show each year, and some farmers have phones in the barn. Buggies use the McDonald's drive thru. I can't say I fully understand these rules, but if it works for them, so be it.
I was at an Amish barn raising about 20 years ago in Seneca County, New York, in a section of the Finger Lakes where the Amish and Mennonites now have a very strong foothold. The barn going up was for a young couple just starting their farm. There probably were about a 100 people working, and the techniques were of using smaller framing pieces nailed together rather than the massive frame work of the past in this case. What was so noticeable was the very disciplined way the work was proceeding. No screaming, yelling, etc. as everyone seemed to know what they had to do and there was little necessity for much direction of the work.
Actually - I grew up as a plain, Old Order Mennonite (the ones who drive horse and buggy), and the Old Order Mennonites do not have any beards. Some of the men in the video have beards - it might be a mixture of Mennonites and Amish helping each other build the barn. LOL, I'm actually from NY as well...
Monday to friday lunchtime they do. They don't have to put up with people that don't know what they are talking about. I like to do what i want on weekends.
That's definately not Mennonite. If you are considering them mennonite then they'd be the most conservative mennonites in the world. They would be more along the lines of "beachy amish" if you ask me. I am mennonite and i'm just as modern as anyone else. I wear name brand clothes, drive a souped up car, have a xbox 360, on my laptop. I'm not saying this to brag its just what a person believes is what makes them mennonite, not what they wear or have.
Most mennonite men shave their beards, amish men start growing beards after marriage, and yes as someone commented mennonites wear more color variety whereas as amish wear black ,shades of green, brown ,purple ,blue, it's not hard to tell the groups apart mennonite head coverings for ladies are smaller.
Having grown up around these folks, I can say that they would NOT consider themselves Mennonite. They are Amish (perhaps a derivative; there are many clans). Mennonites have no restrictions about clothing (beyond conservative dress) and hair; hats or transportation.
First off these are not mennonite they are amish yes they use power tools the average amish man starts this kind of work at age fourteen so this is like a vacation for them.
The hats aern't what make them AMISH ,they are descendants of Jacob Amman their choice of lifestyle separates them from the modern world ,no electric ,dressing plainly ,speaking a german dialect, and having their church service in their homes just as the early Christians and Pilgrims did.
This is how it's been done for hundreds of years. They brought this technology from Europe, this is the right way to build a barn. OSHA can fuck off, no safety or permits necessary.
Great film. think osha would shut down this build if it was commercial property/business. Really, they should have safety harness at that height. Thanks for the vid
I didn't know that about Old Order Mennos. I've known Brethren who refer to traditional Brethren men as having "Brethren beards." Not sure I'll ever get all the distinctions right.
Steep roof. Good to see real wood being used and how they are working together. Most people around here just let the barn fall down. They must be using a power tool.(saw)
They surely do it more safely than "modern" carpenters would do because they're experienced in working this way. Just like my step-mother's German grandmother know how to light a Christmas tree with candles without burning the house down.
That all depends which Mennonite church you attend... Holdemann Mennonites are quite the opposite, they are supposed to grow beards after being married...
Why do I hear electric tools in the background? I thought they don't use such things. Why not get a compressor and a air nailer and be done with it. Oh I see a little is OK long as it suits their needs, but they really don't condone modern things. Seems like hypocrisy.
I could open up a can of worms on that theology but, I'll spare us the book writing and say that God's son Jesus came born of a Jewish heritage for the Jewish people and the rest of the world. Hating Jews means you're hating God and His Son, Yeshua. And, there's no room in Heaven for people like that. So, we know there are one of two places where we go when we die. Heaven or Hell. If not in Heaven, well then, it's going to be Hell.
alwcurlz No room in heaven? The kingdom of heaven is within. If you're still praying to a God outside of you and thinking heaven is a destination, you are completely disempowered and a victim of organized religion. Your I AM is the power of Christ within you. Start creating, silly pants
Dave Stone Your fantasy will end with your life if you think you are a god. Only then you will realize there is no god in you. The first man, Adam learned that mistake and we are all paying for that. God cannot live in a human. Humans by nature sin from birth till death. Jesus Christ, God's son is the only one who was all God and all man without sin. He alone has the power of hell and death. What I believe is a faith in something and someone that gives hope after this short life is over. It's not religion. You have a religion. Religion is: "Man's way of feeling better about himself through futile works on this earth". When all hell breaks out on this earth I hope you will remember where your hope should really be founded upon. Jesus Christ is the only reason we have hope. There is nothing we can do of ourselves to save ourselves or anyone else in this world.
Hitching up the buggy
Churnin' lots of butter
Raised a barn on Monday,
Soon I'll raise another
For carpenters, clatter of hammers is the most beautiful music in the world. I've been listening to her for 23 years
People like this add so much to the country and enrich the character of America.
Good, clean hard-working folk! The gold-standard of the American work ethic!

Notice there is no government required safety equipment, if one was to get hurt they take care of each other.
Now that is a barn, wonderful workmanship, great design and scale, thank you for this video.

That's a heck of a nice BIG barn.
People like this add so much to, and enrich character of America.
To be honest... I wonder who's got it better. Us, or them?
a legal form of slavery
Monday to friday lunchtime they do. They don't have to put up with people that don't know what they are talking about. I like to do what i want on weekends.

Slavery? More like self sufficiency
@Landon daniel Hyde so why arent you living in their community?
This is the true definition of putting in work...

Love the Amish! are those Mennonites? My papa was Mennonite and that is way different.
First off these are not mennonite they are amish yes they use power tools the average amish man starts this kind of work at age fourteen so this is like a vacation for them.
No building permit here it's their land and they do what they want. I think it's way above any building code anyway. Well done.
How long does it to build a barn this size from start to finish
*Without their hats they're nothin'!*
The hats aern't what make them AMISH ,they are descendants of Jacob Amman their choice of lifestyle separates them from the modern world ,no electric ,dressing plainly ,speaking a german dialect, and having their church service in their homes just as the early Christians and Pilgrims did.
Are these Mennonites using nails or screws to fasten the barn together?
The motors you hear in the background aren't really chainsaws. They're Amish guys racing their chopper engines.
Don't let OSHA see this... they'd freak!
OSHA wouldn't care since it's not a business.
Great team work.
beyond impressive.... did i hear power tools?
Mennonites with no need or use of endless bickering may be Canadian.
This is how it's been done for hundreds of years. They brought this technology from Europe, this is the right way to build a barn. OSHA can fuck off, no safety or permits necessary.

These are men, not pussies.
They’re harnessed off to Jesus

Du hoscht schun recht, Jeremy, die gucke wie Amische leit, aver du kennscht net alle Fuhre-Mennischte.
Tobitobiify but still they look exactly like some other amish churches in our area
Teamwork
That barn is huuuuge
Good thing they are not in California, because they would each get a $25,000 fine for not wearing a safety harness, from OSHA.
U fall off that barn, you wish you were tied off.
Hell imagine what these guys could do if they used technology
@arlichar11 yep you sure did :) Mennonites, unlike the Amish, can use electricity and some even have cars
Union 💚💚💚
@fattymcfatfatism They're Mennonites, not Amish. Mennonites use modern machinery, automobiles & everything the rest of us use.
good livin
Dont forget faster pinkskud
That's alright :) It is a great video :)
i love to see this, but obviously no one asked them to be filmed!Wtf? no respect, man!

I heard power tools! lol
15 lads 15 nailguns a saw and a load all or forklift beats them hands down
Did you say Kosher? lol....that's Jews. Amish eat whatever they want.
And the Amish are quite anti Semitic.
as they should be
