Everybody is telling me that I shouldn't have got a 6.4... it sounds like they're alot of trouble... and expensive to fix. What should I do? Get out of it? I mean, if an engine is 17,000 dollars, it better run for A LONG TIME! Why are these engines such a problem?
@@mikekillian5989 honestly the best thing you can do is take care of it with routine maintenance. I hate to say it but these engines are prone to blow by issues if not properly maintained. I seen people get 500k out of them and heard of others getting6k out of them. In my opinion and personal experience with the 6.4, if you take care of it and dont throw crazy horse power at it it will take care of you.
@@mikekillian5989 I love my 6.4.... I have over 200,000 and it runs like a dream. But you have to delete the EGR and DPF... They are like a cancer on that engine. Also do a 5" staright pipe and a tune along with regular maintenance...
People say don’t get a 6.4 because they are the baddest diesel motor out and can be built to handle major power. But shit breaks and gets expensive quick when you play with fire. 900hp+ engines don’t make long term daily drivers but they sure are fun while it lasts 😝
How does this not have more views!?.... Good info. Thank you for taking the time. Would like to see how everything has held up to this point in time as these trucks are now getting older.
I think people write the 6.4s off as garbage as i loved this truck when i had it. It performed extremely well and was reliable for me. I did end up trading it in 2 years ago for a Ram 2500 because i wanted the manual transmission. Thanks for the compliment
Ran 50lbs of boost in mine for about 2 years till I had the head gasket issues. It cost about $8,000 to replace the head gaskets and put studs in mine.
Having to deal with a head gasket issue right now. 225,000 miles and totally deleted. Pulling engine to pull heads but can't decide if I want to pull pistons and bearings while its out. Been pushing coolant from degas bottle. Did block test and it has combustion gases in coolant.
Im sorry to hear them issues. In my opinion if i was to pull my engine, i would do a full check on everything as well. 225k in my opion does not warrant a full revuild but id definitely check my crank case rotary components. Good luck man!
I have a deleted but stock 6.4 I bought with in 2014 with 55,000 miles, and had I done the investigation on the 6.4 I would not have bought this truck. I now have 121,000 miles with no trouble and I pull a 5th wheel on mountain roads. I have the mini maxx tuner and keep this truck well serviced and next service will be full synthetic. I keep my ear to the track and I would say DO NOT BUY A 6.4 IF YOU CAN'T DELETE OR DON'T WANT TO, THE EMMISIONS WILL KILL IT!

I just did a full delete on my 08. My tuner suggested the street tune on my mini maxx as it balances out hp/fuel consumption. Im a little concerned that its a little too much for the engine. Its fast as f#ck, though. Probably need to just set it on the tow tune.

Hello Brandon, Thank you for the great info for us 6.4l guys. I have an '08 F450 that's giving the dreaded P0088 Fuel Rail Pressure to High code. I've read a thousand forum threads and I know that I want to replace my HPFP with an Airdog system or other like it. My question is, do I need a tuner to bypass the sensors on the old pump or will it be a simple install and go type of operation. Thank you for your assistance. Eric Rousse
ERIC ROUSSE Well i didnt run into a p0088 or anything like that and if thats pertaining to the HPFP im not sure if airdog or fass make that i believe they just do Low pressure pumps...so i wont be able to share any experience on that however i have replaced my LOW pressure fuel pump with a Fass 165 gph pump. The only sensor that was left unplugged from the original i believe was the sensor that "detects" water in the fuel. No big deal as long as your draining the seperator until fresh fuel comes out at least once a month youll be fine. When i installed the Fass pump on my tryuck i had already had a programmer installed but when i change tunes it never asks me or prompts me to select anything to do with fuel pumps or anything so i would imagine you would be fine. I didnt get any codes popping up after my install. The hardest part for me with the instal was connecting the lines on top of your fuel tank. I am living proof that it can be achieved with a flsahlight and mirror without having to drop the tank however it did take me considerably longer due to visability and limited space. The best advice i can give you durring the install make sure you messure a few times with hose before you cut it. You dont want to cut it too short. Good luck let me know how you made out
Thank you very much, Brandon. You're a great help. I think I can still get enough pressure if I replace my HPFP with a LPFP and won't have the issues that the HPFP has. Thank you again and I'll be sure to update you on my expedition.
Great video very much enjoyed it. I have a 2010 6.4 and would like to get a tuner and do a DPF delete any recommendations on tuners. Anything new out there that you would buy or have heard good things about.

I absolutely love the way the 6.4s look and sound I want one but I've heard many horror story's about them which questions me if I should buy one or not
good video but some of your point of views are off. I've built a few of these and if your gonna run aftermarket you do need studs although the head bolts do seem to do the trick it won't. Especially if you use upgraded injectors or aftermarket turbo like you have yourself. you might consider new uppipes the upgraded ones with that turbo. If your running a stock tune stock injectors then you'll be fine but your idea of the wastegate will help prevent new pipes needed as well. these engines are the best if you know what your doing with them and they do have some awesome upgrades that can be installed. I own one myself and it has the delipped pistons and after market rods and studded running h&s mini and many other mods. Would you be able to post a video of how the tuner works? I have the same exact tuner and my truck (2008 f250 6.4) has the egr and dpf delete, new water pump and thermostat, but not an aftermarket air intake. The guy I bought it from was supposed to show me how to use it but doesn’t seem like that is going to happen. And I’ve tried looking online for a manual or something for it but haven’t had any luck. Just wondering if you could possibly make a tutorial video?
Kyle Wood I will have time to get that video up this weekend, most likely Sunday. This programer is obsolete making it difficult to find what you need.
Pablo's Reef you bring up a valid point, perhaps if it was like a traditional S&B setup with the shields it would be more effective...the only piece of mind i have is that the scoop in the fender is blowing directly on that filter. I agree with your statement however this intake will pull in more volume than factory which in a diesel we are seeking more dense air so its almost like a doubke edged sword at times lol
I have a 2009 f250. It has the deleted stuff done to it. It has 166300 miles on it. Dashdaq xl 75 hp tune. My truck is blowing out a white smoke or clear smoke. This is my first diesel. Love the truck. The truck is not throwing no codes, it hasn’t lost any power. One guy said turbo maybe another guy said injector. It smells like diesel coming out the pipe. Can anyone help. I don’t like the smoke doing that. Thanks for anything to help.
Tim Pritchett the fact you have not lost power makes me presume its not the turbo however it could be in the beginning phase as well and the fact there are no codes would also leave me to believe its not an injector fouling out otherwise the smoke would most likely be darker however there are arguments to that. You say a whitish clear smoke usually indicates coolant is being combisted. Are you going through more than normal coolant? Also could be the rocker arms as well. Do you hear a distinct popping sound through your intake?
Mine did the same man.. it was 2 and 8 cylinders being shot.. get it checked out. It cost me 6k to rebuild the damn thing after only putting 150 miles on it.. do you have any blowby?
Your 100% correct ..at a minimum there should be a shield there. I thought with the scoop right at the fender pulling in fresh would work best but your right. I will say this with a single turbo setup a stock intack will collapse,so after market is recommended.
Brandon... How much cash are you into your truck? I just bought an 08 F-350 with 60,000 miles. I'd like to boost it somewhat, but it's my daily driver, not a race truck.
I personally had 2 thousand in mine with that setup. If your looking to just boost it a little bit might want to just do a simple delete and call it a day

Congratulations on the purchase
I purchased a 2008 F350 with blown turbos supposedly due to DPF pluggage. It has 215k miles and I got it for 7000. It is in the shop now getting a DPF, EGR delete, and The turbo is being changed out with a H&S Single turbo kit. It will also have a programmer. Just waiting on the Turbo to come in. The after these fixes the engine should be considered "Bulletproofed". The quoted price is 7500 for repairs. My question is, are there some other repairs I need to go ahead and do while the cab is off? I read somewhere that the water pump has a lifespan of 200k miles. Should I replace things like this preemptively? Or take the philosophy if its not broke dont fix it? I would be glad to post a video of truck when out of shop if anyone is interested. Also could there be an underlying cause for turbo failure? this is the 2nd time he had to replace turbos. When I started it, it had white smoke from exhaust, and then dripped oil on the driveway that looked to be coming from turbos. He said that was due to the seals being out on them. Any advise is appreciated.
chad gray well my truck is a 2010 but from what I've heard and read if it's an 08 you need to look into a front cover due to cavitation issues. I would go ahead and do the water pump as well but that's me. I rather do a little preventative maintenance instead of waiting for failure if you know what I mean. it would not be a bad a idea to do head studs as well since the cab will be off. there is a lot of different opinions on that right there. sounds like a little work and you got yourself a beautiful machine my friend.
Diesel Mike Correct same engine sir. from my research in the past I believe ford made a revision to the water pump blades in 09 due to the cavitation issues early on. I could be wrong on that. I do know their solution to 08 owners was an antifreeze additive.
Thanks bud. I have an 08 with 84k currently. I fully deleted at around 60k. Have heard about the cav issues but assumed it was for that whole 3 year generation. While I'm not experiencing any issues I always fear they are lurking. I have actually toyed with the idea of pulling the front cover of this perfectly working truck just to see if I have any problems there. Thanks for the reply.
Diesel Mike Your welcome! I can't tell you what to do however if it were me, I would look into the additive instead of going through that. best of luck to you

That way the information i have based on my experience is out there for every one however if your not comfertable i could provide a different avenue of conversation for you and i
ERIC ROUSSE I had mine disconected before for a trial run and i did not get any CEL or codes. Unless my truck was some how not detecting that than my answer is NO, you do not need to re program your PCM to do a re route
B-riceLewis Its been a wile since ive done these mods but if i remember correctly the intake was 300, fuel pump 600,exhaust 400, turbo set up for the single cost me about 200 bucks minus the price of the turbo
Brandon, thanks for taking the time to make and post your 6.4 videos. I own one as well and routine maintenance is the key longevity. It looks like your CCV is vented out under your hood do you have much blowback/smell from doing that?
Charles Everhart your very welcome, my pleasure. I didn't get the chance to reroute that ccv yet, however I don't get any oil or anything like that making a mess. you can't smell the gasses when driving but when I get out of the truck after its been at operating temperature you can smell it around the front. it's manageable. i DEFINITELY agree routine maintenance is key for any vehicle especially our 6 4's
I purchased a 10' section of 1" ID heater hose and a 1" ID U and routed mine all the way out near the passenger rear wheel. I knew my wife would not appreciate the smell of hot Rotella like I do. Luckily I have very little blowby so It doesn't look like my truck is catching fire.
Charles Everhart Hahaha my wife always says she smells something funny wile walking in our out of the truck. That sounds like a really good idea accually, was 10' enough hose? that will be my first spring truck project.
I will take a video tomorrow morning and share it with you so you can see. Most of the posts online I have read people actually use less hose and vent it out behind the front passenger tire but I thought that if you stopped at a red light the smell would be too strong.
Great learning curve, other than intercooler pipe shows volume v.s. acceleration of pressure. ( need schooling), and removal of emissions defy all logic plus your bumper sticker which is dumb.👎🏾

@@brandonmorey3441 I’m not studded, yet, but it usually stays under 30 everyday I drive it. Thank you
@@adambreeze6491 even better. Your welcome
That's actually a Hot Air intake. Pulling air from under the hood.
Your 100% correct ..at a minimum there should be a shield there. I thought with the scoop right at the fender pulling in fresh would work best but your right. I will say this with a single turbo setup a stock intack will collapse,so after market is recommended.
Nice
Great vid! I really like the single setup. Is that an SXE charger or Sx3?
Demarje Sanders sxe
Demarje Sanders thank you
Brandon... How much cash are you into your truck? I just bought an 08 F-350 with 60,000 miles. I'd like to boost it somewhat, but it's my daily driver, not a race truck.
I personally had 2 thousand in mine with that setup. If your looking to just boost it a little bit might want to just do a simple delete and call it a day
Brandon, from your video I can tell I have almost the same tuner, how can I get in contact with you, need help, I started messing with the tune I'm running and somehow got the wrench to come on and I'm idling at 900 RPM, please HEEEELP.
Sorry for your troubles friend. I do not have the tuner or the truck for the past 2 years. I would try and pull the DTCs with a regular scan tool and clear them or identify what the codes are saying. Id need more detail in order to help diagnose this way
@@brandonmorey3441 thank you for your quick reply, do you have an email I can contact you?
Good vid. Gave you a like just for the flag. Wish I could give you another.
Thank you lol. I appriciate that!
U still have the truck?
I do not have the truck anymore
I do not have the truck anymore
@@brandonmorey3441 did it blow up?
@marksrepairj623 no it did not, i traded it in on a Cummins G56 back in 2019
@@brandonmorey3441 right on man
Which pull a part does she currently reside at ?
Not too sure that it made it to a junkyard yet...when i traded it in 2 years ago they were impressed with the high mileage with such little blow bye.
This truck still ripping?
Bought a Ram about 2 years ago...wanted a manual transmission, but it was still running strong
@@brandonmorey3441 Good to hear. How many miles before you let it go? Just bought a 6.4 with 200k. They either sold it to me with a blown HG or I somehow blew it in the first 100 miles haha. It's getting studded atm. Just excited to get it back and keep it on the road as long as possible
@@SkylerMorgan i had around 170k on it and i must have been fortunate because i didnt have near the issues or horror stories that are out there on the 6.4. So either i traded at the right time or just got lucky with my particular engine lol. Good luck with it, the truck was definitely a solid workhorse for me when i had it. Congratulations on the purchase
Is it still running?
I sold it almost 3 years ago...i hope its doing well
I purchased a 2008 F350 with blown turbos supposedly due to DPF pluggage.
Why would you assume that an 08 is more susceptible to cavitation over a 2010? Same engine, same 6.4L.
I can't tell you what to do however if it were me, I would look into the additive instead of going through that. best of luck to you
who is the fuel pump by? thanks in advance.
Tanner Moore Fass
+1 for the American flag! That's 5hp easy.

Brandon. How are you !
Hey i just bought a truck 6.4. 2010 And i really like to take care. As you take care of your truck so i would like to know how can i contact to you !
LATINOS POWER well i am flattered and though i do appriciate the compliments i feel if you had any questions or concerns they could be adressed on here because im sure some of my viewers may have simular quesrions as yours. That way the information i have based on my experience is out there for every one however if your not comfertable i could provide a different avenue of conversation for you and i
Do you need a tuner to re-code the PCM if you reroute the CCV?
ERIC ROUSSE I had mine disconected before for a trial run and i did not get any CEL or codes. Unless my truck was some how not detecting that than my answer is NO, you do not need to re program your PCM to do a re route
Thank you.
Use good quality 100% synthetic motor oil. There is a difference.
Thank you, great comment! Absolutely noniced a difference once I made the switch myself.
How much did this cost?
Charles Everhart can't wait to see it
Stacked blocks and blocks in the front a big bo no
I’m speaking from experience...the absolute best modification any 6.4 owner can do is getting rid of it.
Great learning curve, other than intercooler pipe shows volume v.s. acceleration of pressure. ( need schooling), and removal of emissions defy all logic plus your bumper sticker which is dumb.👎🏾
The intercooler pipe was factory unless you were referring to the intake pipe? Thanks for the opinion.
