  • Over 100 years later and this son Cubano still gives! Before @sevdaliza_ 2024 “Alibi” ft. @yseult and @pabllovittar , “Rosa Que Linda Eres” has seen multiple Colombian samples and iterations including versions by Toto La Momposina and Carlos Vives. The son Cubano’s historical trajectory continued from those AfroCubans laboring on Colombian sugar mills in the 1900s to present-day. Magín Diaz, awarded a 2018 Grammy a year after his death for “El Orisha de la Rosa,” was most recognizable to me. Carlos Godinez’s Sexteto Habanero started it all. Interestingly enough “El Sexteto Nacional de Cuba” originally named “Sexteto Occidente” then finally named “Septeto Nacional de Cuba”-the group that inspired @sexteto.tabala was formed by Columbia records as a commercial rival to Victor records’ “Sexteto Habanero” following the group’s success. Ignacio Piñeiro, key figure in son cubano’s development led “Sexteto Nacional.” Rafael Cassiani had spoken fondly of his growing up from a child as a group member of the Colombian “Sexteto Habanero.” African diasporic musical pathways criss-cross the Americas! Huge appreciation to Carlos Godinez’s great grandson keeping this information alive. Did you know of the older versions of this song?
