    Here is one of the unsung heroes of golf . If anyone deserves a place in the World Golf Hall of Fame for services to golf, it's Mac O'Grady. Thanks for posting.

    I played with O’Grady a couple of times when he played on the European tour and found him a very complex character and though I listened to his theories on everything from steam navigation to black hole science I wouldn’t want to let him into my head I don’t think.

    I was at a practice round at Lake Course in San Francisco in 1987, and the US Open was played at the O Club. It was a practice round for the US Open and Mac was putting on a clinic. He had a migraine headache and asked me to get him some aspirin, and then I was privileged to be able to be up close on the range with him as he put on his clinic. And the guy could do the splits, he was extremely flexible. It was the most pure striking of a golf ball, with total 100% balance and power I have ever seen. I would love to be able to watch a clinic again of his in person, i also meet and was able to play a number of holes with different pros there, highlight of my golf life.

    The first indicator of teaching and research ( I heard from the video) was ethics and morality of teaching. He, (O'Grady) teaches from a kinesiology and nurturing of the golf perspective. Everyone talks about their "perfect" golf foursome. Mine would be; O'Grady, Hogan, Knudson, and myself. And how honorable to speak of service above self. I somehow wonder if any golf professional instructor has ever taken the time to call Mr. O'Grady and said, "Thank You".

    A pioneer in the golfing world. His matching up of his arm swing with his body turn was second to none. Once his should stop turning on the backswing as does his arms. Most ams arms have run on in their backswing after their shoulders stop turning. Once Mac's shoulder turn is complete, so is his arm swing. Fully in sync. Such a great ball striker.

      Leadbetter and others were teaching this synching (no "arm run-off") decades ago also, including my instructor. Mine is anal about it, and taught it to me in my 1st lesson with him 13 years ago (I had about 11 frames of run-off!). He would say (based on 30fps video) "you can get away with 1 frame run-off, maybe 2, but the more run-off you have the more you'll be a fader or slicer, and have to use a lot of hand/forearm manipulation to square the club. So you'll never be consistent."

    There, from the horse's mouth ..... "Mankind's Objective Research And Development". Not all those other interpretations people claim .... and as grandiose as it may sound, I can believe what he says is genuine and well intentioned.
    As a bit of an outlier myself, I think I would have got along well with this man. I hate most of the gambling, egotistic culture around golf. I enjoy the challenge and striving for perfection, not winning to show I'm better. "How", not just "how many", has always been more important .... and beating someone for bragging rights is something off my radar. That's why I now enjoy watching LPGA events. Those girls putt fantastically and play such a controlled game throughout the bag. I guess we all play for our own reasons😊

      Lol! I was thinking the same thing. More like a biopic movie. There’s an article about him in Golf Digest, you can find it online. Gary McCord is interviewed in that article and tells stories of his personality and antics. He’s a very interesting character according to McCord; somewhat of an enigma and has done some strange things. Yes a movie about him would be very interesting.

    He was a strong opponent of lifting the left heel in the backswing. He said that there was no logical reason to do so. He even told Tom Watson to keep his left heel down.
    It is widely thought that the raising of the left heel is to increase shoulder turn : which it does.
    But the real reason for lifting the left heel, which mac o grady, with all his wisdom, did not understand, is to take the rotating mass, slightly " off balance", so there is less resistance to the pivot action.
    A good ananagy, is a 500lb barrel, when laid flat on the floor, would be physically very difficult to rotate.
    Yet : tilt the barrel on its edge whilst aligning it centre if gravity on the vertical axis :one could rotate the barrel, with the power of a single finger: all because the centre of gravity of that rotating mass, had been moved to a different location.

    • @kevinralbovsky4621
      @kevinralbovsky4621  Рік тому +2

      Mac promoted lifting the left heel in late MORAD if the student has limited flexibility. One of the ten components to increase backswing rotation to 90-100 degrees for the tighter bodies. Mostly driver.
      1. Closed stance w/ball position mid-back. 2. Straighten the right knee to increase hip turn. 3. Lift the left heel. 4. Rotate the head to the right. 5. Shoulders down in depression throughout swing 6. Hand path on an extreme arc. 7. No left arm lift p3-4. 8. Tension level in grip, shoulders and arms reduced. 9. Lower torso COG left of center. 10. Left knee releases inward inside the ball.
      MORAD is adaptable to the individual. The general model is fairly easy. It’s the students habits that are sticky to change. Ideally the student needs a baseline of flexibility to have a powerful, repeating swing. Less moving parts the better. Try hitting your full PW lifting the left heel…mis-hits! Everything relative.

    Everyone gets confused about Hogan's "weak" grip from 5-Lessons, including Mac in this video! The grip Hogan describes in 5-lessons is a strong grip, very much like Mac advocates, and what Hogan used in the Power Golf era (pre-'48). Unfortunately, the illustrations in 5-Lessons are of Hogan's weaker "post accident" playing grip, which he clearly describes as a "personal modification" and not a fundamental. He points out that the player is best off, who uses the fewest modifications to the fundamentals.

    • @mudddge

      I think Hogan post accident actually settled on a neutral grip

    Sometimes I think teachers would be better served if they would just hit balls for people to see how it’s done. Let them visually study what needs to be done in order to be successful. There’s a point in the conversation where the brain just turns off while listening. It’s inevitable.

    I appreciate what this guy and Homer Kelly did, but they brought forth way too much technical analysis of the swing which can ruin your game. Go to 19:26 mark and you see the downfall of this - it's just too much analysis and a lot of the stuff Mac analyzes makes no difference whatsoever. My father went to one of his clinics in late 1980s and said it was very confusing and made him stiff and locked up while thinking of all the "positions" he was supposed to be hitting. There is no perfect swing. Look at Mac's swing with the audio turned off and just copy what he's doing.

    • @kevinralbovsky4621
      @kevinralbovsky4621  2 роки тому +1

      The way I look at it is… Whether you’re serving a tennis ball, learning ball-room dancing, doing a handstand… you must first break down the parts step by step, then with repetition it becomes second nature. From there you can go on auto-pilot.
      Plenty of students enjoy improving the technical aspects of their golf swing. New discoveries are part of the great satisfaction of the game.

    • @cdunne1620
      @cdunne1620 Рік тому

      ..when you say there is no perfect swing you are implying there is no preferred motions in a golf swing. Clearly that’s just incorrect. Many many pro golfers have very similar patterns in their swings, very similar, but you are saying no all golf swings are different.
      Why do so many people object to analysis. Is it because it takes patience and effort or that they are just not talented at analysis. I don’t get it. Obviously you can’t swing properly with a mind crowded with swing thoughts BUT that doesn’t mean all swing thoughts are useless. That is just too simplistic.
      Swing thoughts are useful in the learning process, very useful. They are the guide in learning, your brain uses thoughts to organise itself and to learn. If you object to swing thoughts you’re basically objecting to the proper use of your brain in the learning process, that’s why I am in awe often at people saying all swings are different. They just give up so easily, destined never to learn and improve, how tragic.

    • @mudddge
      @mudddge 8 місяців тому

      @@kevinralbovsky4621that is not necessary at all.
      Sam Snead, very much the model for the MORAD swing, was a firm believer in keeping the swing as simple as possible. Not to worry about anything more than necessary, and he succeeded in that aim.
      The sum of his books make the swing so simple very few today, in this technological age, would believe it.

    • @kevinralbovsky4621

      Actually his neurological ideas are the best part when explained simply. Move the club and your body in a manner which is easy on the brain to repeat. Then turn the conscious brain off and play on autopilot.

  • @sduke39
    @sduke39 3 роки тому

    I wish Mac had not been so secretive with his MORAD system. The MORAD system never really became a teachable methodology due to Mac's reluctance to even share it with other teachers. Those that did share information were driven from the kingdom and banished from discussing Mac's teaching. Unfortunately now, MORAD has been given the same lack of relevance as The Golfing Machine. Both have been passed up by launch monitors, pressure mats, and high speed video. Golf instruction is now based on data and technology, rather than feel and suppositions about positions. I still feel like Mac has a lot to offer to golf instruction, but his MORAD system is no longer the pinnacle of instruction.
