This was one of the most incredible projects I have ever worked on.

In this video, we coded a Minecraft mod that live translates languages through a voice chat above your character in Minecraft. It has fairly good accuracy and can translate most languages around the world. This mod allows you to play Minecraft, make jokes, and have fun with people that can't even speak your language.
Live voice translation has been being worked on by Google and other companies, and they provide API's for it. Google glass , apple glasses, and other similar products have been talked about for years with mentions of live-translating interactions in real life. We thought about taking that, and applying it to gaming.
I truly believe that this is the near future for all online games with voice chat, with being able to play and communicate with anyone from anywhere, breaking down the language barrier. I also believe that this is a cool glimpse into the future in real life. If a bunch of kids can do it at home in one of the biggest games in the world, a bunch of engineers and geniuses can make it happen in real life.
In this video there were plenty of languages, and I was able to laugh and joke with all of them. When testing this mod, I played with friends of mine that spoke different languages, and we were having so much fun playing together and laughing about how crazy it was that we could communicate with each other.
This has been being worked on for a while and I'm so happy to finally share it with everyone. There are some bugs still, and in this version a couple of the notable bugs were: Minecraft words being incorrectly translated, names being incorrectly translated, and your last word not showing up sometimes.
Whenever this mod's bugs are fixed and it's features are added, I plan on releasing this to the public for free, and with open source so anyone can make any additions they want with ease. Depending on what API is used for transcribing/translations and how many people are being translated, it can be costly, so although the mod will be free from me, using it might require setup on your end.
I am releasing an SMP, the "United SMP", which is going to feature creators from all around the world. Equal representation from the languages that are on it, with a mock EU-style committee to make decisions so there is not one owner. This will be launching hopefully later this month, and has 60 creators to start with, 10 of which will be English speaking, 50 of which will be from 5 other languages. Most of these people are people I never would have been able to collaborate with, or make jokes with, or share with my fans, so I am so excited to share our community with the world. There will be more details on my twitter about this, and I will be live streaming the server in the future.

If people all over the world played like this everyday, over a few years we would see a massive rise in international universal terms and phrases AND many people will learn bits and pieces of other languages that would overall lead to better global communication and understanding for the next generations. problem is that the technology is very primitive, with loads of translation errors. It would be the equivalent of trying to play games or watch a movie translated through google translate with voice input. Hopefully better with time though, especially if ai gets really good with translation and listening

Personally I would love if dream did a survival series with this team. It will be so funny! Also, dream is such a nice person.
Russian, Hindi, German, Spanish, Japanese, and English. This is so damn incredible, I'm honestly so impressed with where this can go. Not only bridging the gaps between languages, but educating SO many people about other languages and cultures!!! It's honestly beautiful hearing everyone speak so freely in native/first languages, and to be able to understand each other. SO cool.

I speak Japanese fairly well and I had the best laugh when the mod somehow translated “I didn’t know that (about the acacia).” to “I bought a bra.” Like…how did it even make that translation leap? 😂
The rest of the video had decent Japanese translation with smaller mistakes, as far as I could tell, so I don’t know how it made that jump. Also, this is an amazing idea, Dream! 💕

Amazing they had an entire language translator for Minecraft, perfect.
As a person who speaks both Hindi and English fluently must say some of the translations were a bit scuffed but made it quite funny for me.
I really see this a a huge moment as this mod can help connect lots of people around the world to create and built friendships.

As someone who speaks Spanish and English, those translations were funny. But honestly this is a really cool addition to minecraft bc even when the translator isn’t perfect you can still communicate which is so cool!
Yeah some of the translations weren't very accurate but as long as you can communicate this mod is huge

It would be cool if someone made a mod for minecraft, which would have a voice chat, in the game settings you could configure what language you want to hear the players in, so minecraft will be cool, you play voice chat with a friend, he speaks English, and you in Russian, he hears you in English, and you hear him in Russian. That would be really cool! I hope people have understood what I am writing about.

You can use compact AI models on users computers to eliminate API cost. Whisper model for speech-to-text and something like OPUS-MT for translation.

If you know anything about coding or anything computer science related you will see just how impressive this is. Standing ovation to dream and his friends. Absolute masterpiece
The making of a mod-project like this when it comes to CS has little to do with impresiveness here. Google and other companies simply provided their live translation API which has been built for years, where other projects like MC mods can plug in. This is very simple to make and code, and not impressive. What's impressive is the use cases of it. Dream is showcasing the future of gaming and an SMP he's working on. International gaming will no longer be "international but English" for instance, but actually "international".

I speak 4 languages and 3 of them are in this video. I can't explain how amazing it was to heard Rich and Dream together after so many years of them being my favorite creators!!! Though Rich is very fluent in English anyways, im just glad this happened and im glad this mod exists and will be available so people who didn't have the chance to learn other languages can still enjoy with other people :D

This is impressive. I can confirm all the translations are actually good since I'm a polyglot and speak most of these languages(English, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Russian, German, Arabic in that order). Normally translations between context and concepts can change the translation into something completely different. Arabic, Cantonese, and possibly Indian/African languages may be the ones to notice this more often since they tend to be more meticulous. Other than that the translations can be generally understood; better than I expected for sure! Dream you were handpicked by UA-cam because they know what they're doing and of course they see your potential from your character, good intentions, creativity, and your high intelligence. They see you as an asset for the community and sure enough they were right.
