You think this song was strange in 2020, guess what it was like in 1980?!! The universal reaction was "WTF?!?!?" This album blew my mind! And it spent a lot of time on my turntable..cranked up! This album was another one which they worked with the acclaimed producer Brian Eno, and expanded the band lineup to include some heavy hitters to fill in on instruments. Adrian Belew (Zappa, Bowie, King Crimson) on guitar, Nona Hendrix on backing vocals, and live they brought in Bernie Worrell from Parliament/Funkadelic on keyboards, and Brian Eno playing a little bit of everything. Trivia: the lead singer you saw in the video is David Byrne and he's a Baltimore boy, so us Marylanders are quite proud of that. Talking Heads, the main 4 people, met in art school in Boston and their art school sensibility sure shows on this album. Unlike anything before it. Try listening to "The Great Curve" next. Or go back an album and listen to "Life During Wartime", you might have heard that one before. Thanks for listening to these great bands! Peace from SF
You're right there was alot of wtf in the eighties. There were alot of choices with music and all of it new and fresh. I had a front row seat, GOOD TIMES. Kinda glad it's over because I haven't been right since😐
You gotta remember: Videos were still coming into themselves. Everything and anything was possible. The Talking Heads had a reputation as being very much a performance act. And perform they did! Love this song. Everything from their live album, "Stop Making Sense" is awesome, BTW. Great reaction!
Talking Heads, Ramones, Blondie, were house bands at CBGB'S in the mid 70s to early 80s they all put their personal stamp on the punk and new wave( post punk) era. Loved them at least for being original and pioneers. Great reaction.

Wow! Loved the Talking Heads, a group that performed (back in the 70's) at punk places like Max's Kansas City in New York. I went to a job interview once and a friend, who knew the owner of the company, said that he was a Talking Heads fan. So, when I walked into the boss's office, he extended his hand to shake. The Talking Heads album 'Stop Making Sense' along with a select few others got me through the cultural hellscape of the '80's. A true classic, no exaggeration. The video is sublime, starting with just David Byrne,a guitar and a tape player and building up bit by bit - joined next by Tina Weymouth then the rest of the band appear.along with the most athletic backing singers ever - all building up to the crescendo - 'Girlfriend Is Better' and THAT big bloody suit. Incredible.
Love this sort of insane art. This is what "The Talking Heads" do. Check out their other songs, and you'll see. I think they all escaped from the mental institution. I see they made you smile.
The first time I heard this song was during the opening scene of "Down And Out In Beverly Hills". That version was from their Live Concert film "Stop Making Sense". Truly intriguing...
The first Talking Heads song I heard and first time I was even made aware of them was the video for Burning Down The House, watched it around 1983 possibly 1984 and it was among the earliest MTV videos I can recall watching, I wasn't aware of Once In A Lifetime which was released in 1980 until maybe 1989, MTV is known for playing a video a lot for 6 months then never playing it again. My girlfriend who is older than I am watched MTV the day it came out and she told me how much she loved this song and video and she loved the quirkiness that the singer David Byrne was displaying, the fact that he wasn't trying to look cool or badass or whatever that most people do in their videos, the fact that he was confident enough to let his geekiness, nerdiness, dorkiness, spaziness, whatever you want to call it to come forth for the world to see. The funny thing that she and I laugh about is that she said her mom was seriously disturbed by his actions in this video (her mom is pretty judgemental) and had to leave the room if the video came on, it really bothered her. I joked that David probably reminded her of some geek that tried asking her on a date in high school or stalked her and she never recovered that someone "beneath her" would dare to show an interest in her. David is actually really smart and has written a book on how the music industry works, detailing what you can expect when you're signed to a label, what you can expect in payment when you sell an album (about $1.30 depending on your negotiation) how much more you can expect if your listed as a writer on a song (about $0.09 per song) ,how often you get a royalty check for albums sold (twice a year) how much it costs to record an album, why you shouldn't be so excited when you're given a million dollars when you first sign to a record label because that money is given to be used to pay for recording studio time and is not intended for you to buy drugs, Ferraris and hookers AND the record company is going to want you to pay that money back. Just really informative things in case you're thinking of getting into the music business, written by someone who went through it. David is also one of those few celebrities that I would actually like to sit down with and talk about things that have nothing to do with their profession, things like, science, history, the universe, the possibility of life amongst the stars. Other celebs that come to mind for this are Dan Aykroyd and Marilyn Manson.
They were an art school band, that's where they all met. Their visuals were heavily influenced by surrealism and the Dadaists, a group of artists from the 1920's. You might want to check out their concert film "Stop Making Sense" - very interesting and different!
Glad you enjoyed it. Talking Heads were one of the great alternative sounding bands of the eighties. They deserve to be respected in the same way as the likes of The Smiths and The Cure.
I know a bunch of people who take Talking Heads deathly seriously and like... yeah I totally agree they're 'important' songs but it's great to see someone just smiling and laughing at this song because it is also just a great time and should be enjoyed to the max :D
"Stop Making Sense" concert from "Talking Heads"! You need to see it JayveeTV. Or react to parts of it. Everyone should see it. Most fun concert ever. They show all their talents there. Excellent musicians, absolutely cult and funny.
OMG I laughed so hard I got rice up my nose, because I’m eating dinner! 😂 I’m watching for the 2nd time now. I knew you were a bit hesitant to listen to more Talking Heads, but you took a chance because we bugged you so much, and I’m grateful! Thank you! I love this band so much. They have some hits that are more accessible, too, like “Burning Down the House.” But I love them at their weirdest, too! Their concert film “Stop Making Sense” is considered by many to be the greatest concert film of all time. The way it builds from a simple beginning is incredible. I once met David Byrne, very briefly, and he has the most intense eyes I’ve ever seen. He has a new Broadway show coming out on HBO next week (“American Utopia”), and I’m so excited I can hardly stand it! You can find clips on here from a recent SNL performance he did that previews the show. Btw, the live version of this song, Once in a Lifetime (from Stop Making Sense) is even better! And here are some other Talking Heads recommendations: Burning Down the House Stay Up Late Road to Nowhere Slippery People And She Was Girlfriend Is Better Heaven The Lady Don't Mind Life During Wartime Making Flippy Floppy Pull Up the Roots THANKS AGAIN! 💕 P.S. I forgot to add that David Byrne is a big fan of Brazilian music and has put out some excellent compilation CDs that introduced new audiences to so many artists! Check out Umbabarauma by Jorge Ben - it’s a football (soccer) song! You will LOVE it. Phenomenal rhythm. I couldn’t stop listening to it when I first heard it and I still listen to it frequently!
One of the coolest concerts i ever saw. Watch Talking Heads "Stop Making Sense" in their 1984 concert. You will enjoy their live performance much more than this video. Always use this concert as the go to for any talking heads reviews.
This was one of the very early MTV videos. I was already a hunger Talking Heads fan from the late 70s. David Byrne was (still is) one of the most innovative, creative, and interpretive talents from the early New Wave movement. For a special treat, watch their “Life During Wartime” performance live from their 1984 Stop Making Sense tour (I was there!), movie, directed by Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs). Absolutely brilliant performance by the entire band. Whoa!
LOOOOOVE Talking Heads!! As far as figuring them out - often the meanings are highly idiosyncratic and aren’t meant to be deciphered but just absorbed. Their famous concert film is called “Stop Making Sense” after all! (I wear that t-shirt a lot to remind myself. 😂) I highly recommend that you check out that film! Many consider it to be the greatest concert film ever made, and it’s viewable in its entirety on UA-cam! I have a ton of Talking Heads requests but I think my top 3 of those you haven’t done yet are: Slippery People Girlfriend Is Better Road to Nowhere 🥳 THANK YOU! 💕
Love the song and what a video! So odd, but that is the great part of it. Anything from the DVD Live show "Stop Making Sense" is gold. Some have rated that music concert video in the TOP 5, best ever.
Studio: Wild Wild Life, Burning Down the House, (Nothing But) Flowers, And She Was, Take Me to the River Stop Making Sense: Girlfriend Is Better, Life During Wartime, Psycho Killer (yes, again, trust me on this one), What a Day That Was It is *very* difficult to go wrong with these guys.
Great reaction. Talking Heads were unique in that they came from an Art School background, and you can see that in their inventive approach to music, and videos. This was an early favorite on MTV (when it actually played music 24/7). Singer David Byrne is acting out what is in the mind of many of us - a sweaty, manic, confused mess wilting under the strains of modern society. At the end, we see it's all in his head.
Awesome! It's really good to see this song (and this video) is still confusing people 40 years later! "There is water at the bottom of the ocean"! Remain In Light -- the album this song comes from -- is really good too! "Born Under Punches", "Crosseyed and Painless", "The Great Curve" and more!
Talking Heads were amazing - and band members husband-and-wife team Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz had another band called the Tom Tom Club -check out their fun and amazing song Genius of Love (lots of artists sampled portions of the song)
I love this video and song. It reminds me of comix from the 70s, like Mr.Natural and the famous image of Keep On Trucking. This is totally crazy and fun . Love Byrne. This is my favorite of their songs. They also did a song for the track of Wall St. David's wife had a cameo in the film. She worked in the company and tells Bud (Charlie Sheen) that they called from the hospital and his dad had a heart attack.
Absolutely listen to "Burning Down the House", but the live version. They toured with a killer percussion section and the most fun backup singers ever. The excitement pours from the screen!
David Byrne as a solo act is also amazing. His albums Rei Momo and UhOh were played every road trip without fail. A walk in the dark is so haunting and odd. Love it!
Don’t stop now! More Talking Heads, please! Burning Down the House, And She Was, Road to Nowhere, Take Me to River (Al Green cover).

David Byrne is a very clever and talented musician.
I didn't know they were into the "dada" movement ! Anyways I remember when this video came out and thought I'm really a Nerd for loving this.
Glad you enjoyed it. Talking Heads were one of the great alternative sounding bands of the eighties. They deserve to be respected in the same way as the likes of The Smiths and The Cure.
Love me some Talking Heads. Saw them live. They were great!
What a song! Great beat and bass. Loved this when it came out
"Burning Down the House" and "Wild Life" are both fantastic too!
I'm so much enjoying that you do all these 80's music. Thank you!!
It is a fun song 😆. Talking Heads Life during wartime and Burning down the house are really good as well , Thank you Jayvee ✌️
I love the talking heads!! You should listen to stay up late!
And here are some other Talking Heads recommendations:
Burning Down the House
Stay Up Late
Road to Nowhere
Slippery People
And She Was
Girlfriend Is Better
Heaven
The Lady Don't Mind
Life During Wartime
Making Flippy Floppy
Pull Up the Roots
THANKS AGAIN! 💕
I remember hearing this in the opening scene of “Down & Out in Beverly Hills”, scenes of homeless people as the song plays through
Me too. Funny film.
If you like this from them you’ll LOVE “WILD WILD LIFE”
This is one of those songs that you'll find pops into your mind days from now. You suddenly discover you're singing the chorus to yourself
One of the coolest concerts i ever saw. Watch Talking Heads "Stop Making Sense" in their 1984 concert. You will enjoy their live performance much more than this video. Always use this concert as the go to for any talking heads reviews.
"Life During Wartime"! Talking Heads are great!
This song is BRILLIANT, David Byrne is BRILLIANT! I LOVE THE TALKING HEADS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whoa!
Man, that song brings back some great memories to me from the 80's - Road To Nowhere & And She Was are also great songs
I love Talking Heads!!!! I was a teenager when this came out and I loved it! Still do🤣🤣🤣
"There is water at the bottom of the ocean"! Love it!
I have a ton of Talking Heads requests but I think my top 3 of those you haven’t done yet are:
Slippery People
Girlfriend Is Better
Road to Nowhere
🥳 THANK YOU! 💕
Talking Heads are Genius! David Byrne is an amazing musician and performance artist.
Talking Heads - Road to Nowhere. Another great song and video you’ll love.
Love the song and what a video! So odd, but that is the great part of it. Anything from the DVD Live show "Stop Making Sense" is gold. Some have rated that music concert video in the TOP 5, best ever.
His startled face when he popped up in the beginning 😂😂😂
I've never put any thought into the lyrics of this song I just love everything about this
Studio: Wild Wild Life, Burning Down the House, (Nothing But) Flowers, And She Was, Take Me to the River
Stop Making Sense: Girlfriend Is Better, Life During Wartime, Psycho Killer (yes, again, trust me on this one), What a Day That Was
It is *very* difficult to go wrong with these guys.
Talking Heads, Life During Wartime from the performance film Stop Making Sense!
This the song on down and out in Beverly Hills and they got in the rock roll hall fame and sold over40 million albums so they did everything
I couldn't click fast enough for this one - classic song - that point in your life when you question your choices - How Did I Get Here?
Love & blessings to EVERYONE in this beautiful community!
Love it!
