$115,000 LONG ISLAND OPEN
Garden City Bowl, Garden City, N.Y., Apr 2-7, 1984
Schlegel An Island Unto Himself
Ernie Schlegel earned a ticket back into the Firestone Tournament of Champions by winning the $115,000 Long Island Open.
Schlegel won two matches, including a rousing, 237-214, victory over leading qualifier Mike Durbin to net a check for $16,000. In the championship game, Schlegel opened a 31-pin lead and matched Durbin almost frame-for-frame thereafter to preserve a winning margin.
Jim Stefanich had ousted Art Trask, 210-191, in the opening match before Don Genalo, the defending champ and local favorite, administered knockout drops to Stefanich, 259-215. Schlegel earned the opportunity to capture his third PBA title by upending Genalo, 225-198.

Always have appreciated the professionalism and sportsmanship of Mike Durbin. The man is the epitome of class.
Watching Jim Stefanich, I was amazed at how close he came to the foul line and never fouled. This was a great field. Ernie bowled great under pressure at this tournament. There was nothing like the PBA and then going right to WWOS when the man, the myth, the legend Jim McKay was the host.
Much better than these 2 handed morons we have to watch today.
New guys today are a mile away from the foul line
Ernie Schegle is probably the greatest bowler of all time. He crushed Randy Petersen mentally, (which isn't difficult to do) in 1996 Touring Players Championship.
And you know it's a good one when Jim Stefanich is covering the most boards of the whole bunch. Love it. :)
I went to this one Live, I wish my dad and I had met Stefanich, my dad watched him bowl his perfect game on TV many moons before
My idols! Stefanich, Durbin, Schlegel, can't get any better than this!!
Chis and Nelson were the best... miss them every Saturday afternoon.. they were the best
2 handers had them removed for the moronic Petersen and Rob Stone.
Fun fact: Mike Durban and comedian Tim Conway were both from Chagrin Falls, Ohio.
Ohio has produced solid folks. Facts
OMG can't believe it this is one of the few tournaments I was at to see it live as it was shown on ABC remember this like it was yesterday even though it was nearly 30 years ago!!!
Gotta love that Brunswick Edge! Yes!
You heard Nelson, it was a poly-urethene ball. The Columbia Yellow Dot is polyester. The U-Dot was introduced later that year.
Jim stefanich has bowled a 300 game in 1974 Midas open
Man, Mike Durbin was a tough out. Just a competitor and cold blooded pro. One of the best ever
You’re right. As genial as he came across as a sportscaster, he was actually a very tough competitor.
@@oldsnwbrdr he sure was. Proud to say he lived a lot of his life here in ne ohio. Clutch when it mattered most
Wish someone would post the 1983 Long Island Open.
Am I in the twilight zone or something? Ernie says he treats the ball like it's a hot potato...... and then he stands there like a zombie for half an hour before he finally throws it. Roll it already!
Ernie Schlegel was in the zone to win the Long Island Open
Andrew Phillips buttmunching spoiler
Ya just couldnt resist,huh?🤣
the first match was exciting and very close
Always had to love when Bo would say stuff totally wrong....but with conviction.
Genalo is going to play the track....and he plays around 5.
So many errors he makes; i.e., "If you hit the pin it will go down", "The bowlers are shooting at 3 pound 3 ounce pins". Just a couple of mistakes he has made in previous shows.
Ernie Schlegel puts a tremendous amount of roll on the ball.
Ernie Schlegal put a tremendous amount of pills up his nose. Fixed that for ya😆
1:04:02 "He cannot shout out Durbin though": what the heck are you looking at Bo? Good announcer but so many faux pas.
Did Chris Schenkel mistakenly say “John” Genalo at 35:14?
The way the PBA Used to be !!!
Genalo has a monster, epic molestache
Roto Star's answer to the Columbia Yellow Dot...the blue polyester.
Any chance you could load up that tournament that eagle won in the beginning? Look at the old gravity ball returns!
Ernie was wild but Cathy put an end to that.
Women will do that.
She was on more drugs than him.
'84 . . . just about the time I got busy with life and got away from bowling.
can you please upload the 1984 and 1989 Firestone Tournament of Champions
"UNBELIEVABLE!" "I don't believe it...Muhammad Ali"
Didn't Trask become a leg breaking, finger choppin bookie? That's pretty bad ass
Don Genelo looks emaciated
Carmen Salvino missed the show by 42 pins.
48:22 - another of many Ernie Schelgel's "huh?" moments. I guess it worked, though.
Also - what is Genalo throwing?
Roto Grip, soft plastic. Competitor to yellow dot.
did stefanich have a rug? never heard he did, but sure kinda looks like one!!!
I think he did. These days he sports the natural look!!!
mrbowling300 thank you mr bowling, and thank you for posting all these videos!!! they are a joy to watch!!
dettigs glad you enjoy them....will have more in the spring time....too busy at work right now. :)
Haha! I wonder if Trask is still serving time?
Wasn't he a let breaking bookie type? Lol
I like KABC-TV
48:20 BUFFALO!!!!!!
hands got sore in these days ...
Didn't Art Trask end up doing a prison sentence for illegal SP Bookmaking at one stage post PBA career?
Yes correct Art was a bookie after bowling.. had a big operation..
What an outlaw ...🤣
Bo was not too sharp, but he had the pleasant tone and common sense absent in today's commentators. Finding someone to fill Billy Welu's place wasn't easy, and the selection of Bo Burton for the job just goes to show the lack of alternatives they had.
20alphabet Your thoughts of Mike Durbin as a color commentator?
irishpogi may have been a conflict of interest as Durban was the PBA president, and the PBA commentator is selected by the PBA
