The reason Hugo is so obsessed with the architecture is because Paris was undergoing a renovation and Hugo was angry that medieval architecture was going to be torn down and not preserved, so he made a book to champion his cause for the preservation of medieval architecture. The abridged version of the book removes all parts about Hugo talking about the architecture.
I absolutely loved it .... architecture and all. 💕 I can understand how it's quite difficult to read, absolutely. Hugo is so talented in how he describes things so they come alive. He is describing architecture, but underneath the surface, he' is actually saying so much more. I loved the story as well but I do agree this book features Notre Dame as the main character with perhaps literature's new found development alongside human civilization as the main theme. Perhaps his views that architecture is losing ground as a celebrated art form in place of literature gaining ground also means that humans will read about stories on paper rather than living them in beautifully constructed cities. 💕
Well done for finishing it, I tried a few years ago and couldn’t manage it! Really enjoyed this video, although HOW did the hot chocolate go so far?! 😂
I’ve spilt coffee like that before! Right in front of my boss when I asked for help getting a higher position. So embarrassing, yeah girl I’ll help you, since you’re so capable!
Honestly I actually prefer the 1996 Disney film. It was easier to follow. Esmeralda and Quasimodo were more likeable than they are in the book. Also I like Claude Frollo better as Judge than a Priest. Also Frollo was a much cooler than he was in the book. I’m probably the only one who likes the the three Gargoyles. But that’s just me. This is coming from a guy who can’t stand Dory in Finding Nemo, so what do I know? To each their own.
This is exactly how I feel about George R.R. Martin's A Feast for Crows. I'm glad I read it but... for the love of gods (the old and the new), it was seven hundred pages too long and dealt with everything except the very plot.

I know that information now and I wish I'd know that before read it lol
I came down here to say this as well 😂 Hugo is definitely exhausting to read! I love his books so much, but they’re definitely not for everyone.
I remember watching a documentary that Victor Hugo was a campaigner on architecture and that’s why there is so much in the book.
He was indeed but when I started the book I had no idea so it was a bit of a shock for me!

I wish he split it into two books. One about Esmerelda and the characters and another for all the architectural stuff.
OMG YES I FEEL THE SAME WAY REX!

haha I love that it dealt with everything except the plot!!!
I read this book and absolutely loved it. But Jesus Victor Hugo could drone on and on and on about anything.
He is such a chatter and you never know what his going to chat on about!
