  • Overwatch was supposed to save Blizzard. Instead, it was the beginning of the end for one of the most beloved game developers in the world.
Between a broken game, a waning player base and enormous controversy, it seemed like there was no hope left for Overwatch.
And yet, Blizzard got one last chance to make it right.

Overwatch at its core is undeniably a fun game, the problem is Blizzard is always making poor decisions when balancing. Playing OW is like eating the best tasting ice cream and every other bite you get a piece of soggy bread.

Balancing in Overwatch is probably one of the hardest games to ever balance properly, which is understandable.
The problem is lack of content, rewards, progression and incentives. Have non of those with improper balance is disastrous. Which is the state of Overwatch for the past three years but made worse with Overwatch 2.

2016-2018 was truly the magical years of Overwatch, the game was at its peak that time. Then Brig came out and on top with slow balancing, it fell off. Before the game felt like a hero shooter as it plays the best that way but with Brig, she made the game more moba which didn’t fit right for Overwatch. It doesn’t help that they decided to announce OW2 and it fell off further.
3+ years from that and we have OW2 launch…PvP only though. The game did had an exciting launch at first but it fell off fast. There were many things that changes and some were missing. Overtime it’s clear that the game was not made for original OW players which to me is frustrating and feeling betrayed.
As for esports, it felt forced and too fast. They didn’t let grassroots export grow and Blizzard had full control over the esports scene. Never thought I seen the Overwatch franchise mismanaged so badly, all thanks to Acti-Blizz.
Edit: I still think the game still has room to make a come back. Only time will tell. I may not be playing the game as much as before but I still love the franchise since OW1 open beta times.

For the first few of years of Overwatch I was absolutely IN LOVE! I completely dropped playing CS and TF2, games which I had been die hard on for years for this new game with amazing gameplay elements, a spectacular cast of characters and abilities, and some of greatest story telling and lore that I have ever seen. I was actually moved to tears by some of the cinematics that Blizzard produced, Dragons and Honor and Glory specifically. I remember working long hours at a shit job and counting the minutes until I could get back home and jump back into a game with the characters that I fell in love with and the friends that I had made while playing it. It is so sad to see what has become of the game we all grew to love so much. This may be one of the biggest falls from grace that the gaming industry has ever seen.

I discovered this game when my dad saw a video of the 2016 World Cup and bought it for our shitty Dell laptop. Because it was the only computer in our house capable of running an FPS game at the time, my sister and I shared an account and computer. We loved the game so much that we got another computer to play together, and even though we stopped playing together and took long breaks, we always came back. A year or two ago, I rediscovered the game, and even though it was nothing like before, I still loved it. After never being able to get past sliver as a kid, I almost managed to hit plat with my friends and while it's not at all impressive, it was enough. Even though I'm no longer a huge fan of Overwatch, it will always be my first and favorite pvp game of all time.

You guys did a good job with this. Overall this was a very fair and accurate piece.
I do have one small grievance/inaccuracy to point out. You kept repeating that Blizz didn't listen to the community regarding Brig and GOATS, but they absolutely listened. Brig was nerfed, no exaggeration, at least a dozen times in the year or so following her release. They kept chipping and chipping away. First lowering the stun time on her bash, lowering the shield health, her health, making the HoT on her armor packs stop if the target reached full HP, changes to how armor works across the game, then getting rid of the shield bash stun altogether and reworking shield bash to be a slight mobility tool instead of a stun. (I don't remember the exact sequence of these changes but the point is they tried A LOT of things.) Not only that, but they were buffing DPS heroes the whole time. All of this was to try and kill GOATS without going with the nuclear option of Role Lock, but they eventually broke the glass and threw that switch to finally change the meta. So yes, it took a long time, but it's not accurate to say to say they weren't listening because it was super evident they were very concerned about GOATS the whole time.
I also think the impact of GOATS is pretty overrated in the popular imagination. During the GOATS meta, I was in Gold-ranked games, like the majority of players, and guess what? Didn't see a lot of GOATS. But every time you looked at Overwatch content online - omg! GOATS is destroying the game making it unplayable! When in reality, it was a plague on the competitive scene, yes, and I'm sure it was awful for streamers and youtubers at high ranks playing the same meta for 12 hours a day. But this tiny minority of highly-impacted players somehow became the voice of the whole community, and the rest of the community claimed "GOATS" was ruining the game if they got killed by a Brig or couldn't demech a Dva in their metal rank game.

    • @markbo3251
      @markbo3251 Рік тому +1

The fact that I was still in plat during GOATS was so sad, it seemed like so much fun to play tbh. Though I can see how it can get boring after being meta for so long.

Exactly, that was an issue that they didnt mention, balance for casuals vs balance for Esports, people of low Elo dont play meta, they play what is more easy or fun for them, the best rankeds are in gold to diamond, people know the basics but arent obsessed over climbing

    • @Cheesehead302
      @Cheesehead302 Рік тому

Dude this is completely my experience, right here. Maybe it means I'm trash at the game, yeah, I kinda am if I'm in like Platinum or whatever after the stupidly high play time I have lol. But the bizarre hatred toward this game online has always been so weird to me, I mean I get it now because of the Blizzard controversies, but this type of "game is bad because of balance" feels performative to me. Any time a particular new meta sets in, all of the Overwatch content creators start talking about how awful it is, and then you just kinda see the general population agree with them and shit on it. But the key here is what you said: the vast majority of this type of stuff is only a problem for high ranked and competitive players, and not the type of thing that would pose a threat to the 90 percent of people that are just kinda casually solo queueing, and especially not in quickplay. If anything, it can be argued that the developers pay too much attention to Overwatch league tournaments, a lot of characters that utilize some really good strategy in that just aren't ideal to pull off in solo queue or as an inexperienced player.

I sitll think the biggest downfall was the OWL, due to how close it was released to the actual game release, grass roots tournaments couldn't flourish and stuff like Hero Bans or that kind of stuff might have been tested out at tournaments if the balance was ass, but alas Blizzard wanted to control the narrative of their competitive play and this is what we are left with.

I think it's a bit much to say people were excited about the Overwatch League. There were prominent opponents to that direction from its inception. For example, Richard Lewis was outspoken at the beginning, saying it was going to fail because trying to astroturf a competitive scene has never happened and never will happen. Franchising is almost unique to NA and I think that's where most of the hype came from.
EU and Korea were not as hyped as they had never really seen anything like it and preferred their grassroots tournaments and teams. Something I was especially outraged over with franchising was the removal of Esports orgs as their orgs. I.e. Team Envy was no longer, envy, they were the Dallas Fuel. It was no longer Lunatic-Hai, it was Seoul Dynasty. Completely soulless and astroturfed organisations.
Combined with other decisions with the league which were mentioned. The Overwatch League was doomed to fail from the start.

The questions that the game raises about the future of society, AI, among others are truly engaging. The concept of the gameplay is (or rather was) FUN. For me, the problems came first with Metas. I at the time was the epitome of a casual player, I hadnt even touched ranked, and yet by the one year mark I was starting to get bossed around (in casual preface) into playing meta characters and meta strats and the game started to become stale. I had to either play a character I didnt want, and not have a lot of fun and when we would lose I would get blamed for it because surprise surprise I wasnt good at my character, or I would stick to my guns and go with the character I wanted and just get harrassed for "throwing".
After this I dropped the game and didnt get back into it for a while. After a year I got back into it and immediately recognized another glaring issue with the game. Even after introducing new characters and stuff into it, it still felt very similar (this is coming from somebody that played at a mid - high silver) simply just spam shit at choke points and hope the people to not just commit suicide while trying to get play of the game. This sadly led to the game becoming super boring and tiring. This leads to the my biggest problem with the game.
Soon after I came back, I came to the final realization that led me to stop playing the game completely. Winning didnt feel as fun as how demoralizing it was to lose. There wasnt a quote on quote profit when it came to playing. Even if I felt getting better at the end the ultimate goal of winning wasnt satisfying anymore, whether it was because the game was losing its popularity and seemed to be dying, or because the meta was too gimmicky, or because of how sad of an excuse my teammates were, at the end every single time I won all I could utter was "finally..." when that happened I realized that this game simply was not for me and I changed immediately to another game (that was totally not the same hot pile of flaming garbage *cough* *cough* rainbow *cough* *cough* six *cough* *cough*)
Let me finish by saying this. Yes, I have tried out Overwatch 2 and Im just going to say that for me (let me say this again as to not get flamed. ME... My opinion) it just wasnt fun. Foe me, it had the same glaring issues that caused me to stop playing the game in the first place, just that instead of encounters lasting 1-2 minutes they now lasted 30 seconds or so. I played for a week and immediately let it go to rest again.

I think people underestimate how difficult it is to balance this kind of game, where there are so many variables and synergies to keep track of, it's near impossible to have every character share equal playtime. But at the same time, it's strange how they keep continuing to make the same mistakes they have for years. The balancing at the end of Overwatch 1 was actually showing rapid improvement, and it seemed like there was finally some understanding between players on multiple levels. Even the OWL had hero diversity with every team and map, and things were looking up. Then they launched Overwatch 2, and the impact one less tank had was astronomical to the game, and it seemed like this shift in meta was unforeseen by blizzard. As it is right now, there are countless heroes that are nearly impossible to play, or are inferior choices to others in nearly every way. Support is a unrewarding and near unplayable role, and the OWL showed us that once again, there is one dominating team comp for every map, for every team, and for every scenario. I still love Overwatch and its characters, but with the new monetization system and familiar balancing challenges, I feel an all too familiar feeling of tiredness. Fun to play sometimes, but impossible to enjoy after an hour or two.

    1. Brigitte

To this day the core heroes that Blizzard launched the game with still seem to be the most fun

Right now their top priority needs to be the strength of damage boost, and the issues that arise with one shot heroes. If they can figure out even one of the two of those soon that will be MASSIVE for making the game so much more fun and appealing to a wider audience

It baffles me that people talk about StarCraft as a "ded game kekw" while it has between 1 and 2 million unique monthly users, a new patch, and the most competitive pro scene it has ever had. No thanks to Blizzard, even the new patch has been community driven. It baffles me that people talk about it as a "ded game kekw" when it has one of the most driven and passionate communities in going right up there with smash bros melee.

I remember a lot of years ago that ChipsA said that there was nothing like OW, like if every player is making concious deccisions in their picks and everyone plays their role, its one of the most fun games ever, but thats experience is very limited, you have to get a team and play scrims, making tournaments with people that you know will play decent and have good conection, i have played other shooters and nothing comes close to an excellent OW ranked, its like a good futbol match, even the team who lost doesnt feel that bad bcs it was such an awesome match, but balancing is hell, Seagull said it, you balance the maps or the heroes (CSGO or LoL), but if you have to balance both is impossible

Even without Brig meta, OWL was doomed to fail. They veered away from what makes an esport unique, grass root culture. It just goes to show how disconnected the suits managing Blizzard was to the gaming community.
Starting the League as a franchise on the get go and trying to model it like traditional sports basically alienated possible new eyes. People that are hardcore esports fan will eventually fall in love with a team of their choice. It happens organically. What OWL did was forced and inorganic. Had they given the pro scene at least 2 years to ingrave on fabs and grow naturally then the league could have a far more stable and longer lifespan.
And one more thing that killed Overwatch was its watchability (or lack there of). For the casual gamer and people that are not into gaming, watching an Overwatch game was basically pointless. There was too much happening on the screen. It's hard to track players and have a sense what's about to happen and that's even with excellent commentating.
Basically Blizzard saw OWL as a multimillion dollar cash cow that can keep them fed for years. That is not what makes a great esport. Look at CS:GO, The FGC, Rocket League and Riot's esports scene. All started from humble janky beginnings but are now the greatest esports.

Jeff: “at a certain point, I’m like, what the hell do you people want?”
That’s the summation of the problem. Players will complain about OW no matter what the devs do. Overwatch is the whipping boy of modern FPS, and there’s really no rationality behind it.
The closer you look at the criticisms, the more you realize that many of them contradict each other, and have almost nothing to do with whether the core gameplay is good or fun.
We raised OW to the level of a god, and like all gods created by man, it eventually became our scapegoat. OW is Elon musk.

Well this video was made under a more positive context then other overwatch videos on this channel, some of the content is just misinformation. I've been top ranked for 5 years now and the content creators that everyone looks to for opinions are often just going with the flow. Double shield wasn't a meta that was often run in comp. At it's peak it was maybe run 60% of the time. The thing that made ranked really painful was just griefers and throwers and people who didn't care just like any competitive game. People not playing meta in top ten games is throwing, and so to me the most frustarating thing was never playing meta, it was people who would pick trash heroes like moira hog and essentially grief in pro pubs. As a final note, these content creators are not good at the game mechanically, yet they have a huge following. An amazing overwatch league player like vigilante on the atlanta reign streams to like 20 people. The opinions you should be looking at if you want a genuine take on something, is not content creators who just go with the flow and say what people want to hear, but it's pro players who are 1000 times better and who truly know what they are talking about.

It became a game whose foundation was now built upon layers and layers of terrible ideas. Then even when they changed the game to 2,2,2 they never went back and altered the heroes that they changed to counter 222, and now all sense of balance was out the window.

But 2's a hell of a lot better than 1 was for the last few years of its life. Balance issues are inescapable in Overwatch at this point, but I think the overall quality of the game and enjoyment will stand above those issues.
