A single phase fully controlled converter is supplying power to a separately excited DC
motor drive of 1.75 kW, 200V, 10A, 1200 rpm. The armature resistance and armature
inductance values are respectively 1.2 Ω and 1 mH. The supply to the converter (rms value)
is 220 V at 50 Hz. Obtain the current and voltage waveforms in the source side and on the
motor side (i) when the motor is working at a speed of 1000 rpm, while delivering rated
torque. Calculate the firing angle of the converter theoretically for this operating condition
and verify that the motor’s working through simulation. (ii) Change the firing angle
abruptly to 60° and check what happens to the speed of the motor after the steady state is
attained. Get the waveforms for both operating conditions. (iii) Further, if SCR device 1
(T1) gets short circuited, show how it affects the functioning of the converter.
