Left Kalamazoo in 1985. Always loved Kalamazoo and surrounding areas. Saw quite a few of the old landmarks and a whole lot more new bldgs. State theatre is still there and next door was a hamburger place who served the best olive cheeseburgers. I didnt notice if that place waas still in business cause the ride was a little fast. Loved the film.
Bronson Park (the park on the left at about 8:40 in the video) is where Lincoln made his only speech in the state of Michigan. There's a historical marker.
kalamazoo proper, a lot of college students. the kalamazoo metro (not including battle creek), everything from meth houses to genuine billionaires. generally, stay out of comstock and the north side and the worst you'll encounter are drunk/stoned drivers. the north side is currently experiencing gentrification. it's mostly working families, but there are quite a few drug dens, some gangs and the majority of the homeless there. west side/oshtemo, you'll on occasion see a mclaren, lamborghini or bentley. mostly residential (nicer apartments and houses on lots measured in full acres), some decent retail and restaurants with commercial/industrial scattered around. southside/portage is mostly middle class (all 3 levels). you'll find most of the retail here. east side/comstock fell hard when GM closed the factory 15+ years ago, but is slowly recovering. it's a lot of commercial/industrial land with neighborhoods scattered throughout. politically, kalamazoo is a blue dot in a red sea, mostly due to the 3 colleges. we're a swing state, so your vote actually means something. financially, cost of living is going up and wages arent keeping pace. this is thanks in part due to it being listed on a few lists of places with low COL, including forbes. lots of homes here are now owned by out-of-state real estate investors. crime, is about average for a metro this size i'd guess. it's newsworthy when gunshots are heard (unless you live on the outskirts. lots of hunting and farmland). weather, we have it all. sometimes in the same week! shorts and winter coats are common attire for kids heading to school around this time of year. 40 when they get on the bus, 75 when they get off. snow tires are highly recommended.
good ole blue dolphin/papa pete's, Kalamazoo's oldest gay bar. i used to deliver beer and trained with the guy that delivered there. only time i have ever actually seen a leather harness was in their basement, on a mannequin.
