People ask me this so much! I learnt makaton when I was a toddler as I couldn’t talk due to a medical issue, and then I learnt to talk but met my best friend who’s deaf when I was 9. So I learnt BSL from him. Plus I’m a theatre kid so I like to sign when singing which I use SSE for. I’m so glad I learnt them at a young age cause now it means I can communicate with a lot of different people!

I grew up learning makaton and BSL/SSE because of my Aunty who is a special needs teacher. The signs are SO different! I’m trying to learn the BSL structure to have better communication with the deaf community. Can you please make a video on the difference between those who identify as being Deaf or deaf (lowercase) please? I’m just trying so hard to not cause any offence whilst on my BSL journey so looking to learn as much as I can about the language and history of BSL ❤️ xx

Also I have seen your video about BSL structure, if possible could you make a video on examples of BSL structure sentences?
do most deaf people understand SSE? my daughter has some trouble hearing (we don’t know to what extent yet) she also may have ASD.. I want to learn the one that will be most beneficial in communicating with her, so was leaning towards makaton but I would also love to be able to communicate with the deaf community so SSE seems like the middle ground?
Some deaf people do understand SSE but not everyone, some are full BSL users and SSE can confuse them. I would recommend Makaton for a person with autism, but there’s not reason why you have to only learn makaton, you can learn lots of signs and use them in different context. if that makes sense
Its hard to learn SSE online tbh, most youtube channels focuse on BSL, as do different websites and apps and while they use the same hand signs to an extent when it comes to learning longer sentences or phrases they're structured differently so you kinda just gotta figure it out yourself

I’ve been really wanting to learn sign language for a while now. I work with people with disabilities, have done for the last 4 years now and it’s something I absolutely love. I didn’t realise there was so many different types of sign language though, it’s fascinating!! This video was so clear so thank you, really ☺️ i think it’s important to know the differences too and not confuse them. Be respectful in that 😊 My question is though…. Do I learn Makaton or BSL or SSE ? 🫣 I would love to be able to communicate with everyone (including those without a learning disability) in a more structured way but know that Makaton is easier to learn. Hi, I would say if you want to communicate with people with disabilities then Makaton is the way to go. However, if you want to communicate with both deaf and people with disabilities then i would say both but perhaps start with BSL to get to grips with the structure as that can be quite difficult and then makaton will also come a little easier- there are some differences in the signs tho!😊
makaton isn’t typically use for communication with deaf people it is used for people who are non verbal or have a LD. SSE is Sign Support English. it’s sign language in the english Grammatical Structure. Makaton isn’t sign its used voice gestures and some sign to communicate. so not quite SSE can’t do what makaton is mean for

soo i’m terms of of language BSL out of the 3 is the only language. deaf people sign BSL but not in always in the strict structure that it comes with like there’s a dash of SSE in there but mostly BSL as makaton is a few signs mixed with voice and gestures it makes it a bit more difficult to understand. most deaf people can understand so a degree all 3 but some can only understand BSL and struggle with anything else. it depends on the person most of the time. hope that helps

Its a shame I may not be able to communicate well with deaf people with it but I can see the benefit of us learning it together. Great video by the way!
If they’re hearing with a teaching degree then level 6 but if they’re deaf and part of the deaf community level 3 and sometimes if BSL is their first language they mightn’t need a level qualification
@@EmmaKeane Interesting! Had this conversation at work today (work in a Deaf school) and my colleagues had very different opinions from each other. It can be quite a contentious subject I think!
@@jeremy2015 Yes, i can be quite a controversial topic. i think you should always try and find a deaf teacher first as they are more involved in the deaf community it’s their language they’re the best people to learn from and they are always out there but i understand sometimes it’s difficult to find, but if you really can’t find a deaf teacher than a fully qualified hearing teacher also works
