    Oliver, it is quite obvious you swing for the fences every time you produce and release one of these retrospectives. I hope you make the breakthrough creatively and financially which you so richly deserve. Blessings to you.

    I remember watching this movie as a child at my (late) grandmother's house during a fiesta with many other people. To laugh with the crowd is one of the best damn feelings ever. Those were good times.

    I read that Jackie was going to film more in Japan but because of his popularity, the locations were rushed by fans and created real problems shooting on location.

    Absolutely loved watching this on a bootleg VHS i got in the mall as an 11 year old in the 90s. I loved everything Jackie Chan because I just saw Mr Nice Guy in theaters and I was blown away by how weird this one was. Revisiting it for the first time in many years this evening and will be bringing it to my parents house, they're gonna be like WTF 😆

    Yet another great video, Oliver. While I can't say you've really made me want to seek out this film I very much enjoyed the review. You've really gotten very, very good at long-form reviews. I used to prefer your short reviews but over the past few months these longer, in-depth videos have just been fantastic.

    This is a movie that I didn't know what to make of at all when I first saw it. Then I watched it again. And again. And again. And I STILL don't know quite what to make of it but I love it anyway. It's one of those rare films that could only have been made at that time, in that place by those film makers. No way they could make this movie today (they would have to pay the rights to use the Street Fighter license for starters.)I think it is special. Great video as always.

    Most excellent review Sir! Another good ol' staple on Bravo in the mid '90s.
    It's quite funny how many movies you've covered that were Bravo/Sci-fi channel movies shown pretty much every friday/saturday night in the mid 90s. Though you are missing some Troma films :D

    I did enjoy that “Crime Story” film that gets a brief mention in this video. It showed to the nay-sayers that Jackie really could act, so much so that he justly won a Golden Horse Award (essentially the Taiwan equivalent of the Oscar) for Best Actor. He acquitted himself to the role very well even though his character only probably smiled once in the entire film, which is obviously very different to his usual fare at the time.

    I think your summary at the end described it perfectly. This is one of those movies I avoided before because it was never on those lists of "must see" jackie chan movies. Seeing it the first time I laughed my ass off and I think the fight with Richard Norton is honestly one of his better end sequences in the 1990's(behind Drunken Master II, Operation Condor, and Who Am I of course). It's just so absurd and that you can't help but laugh.

    My favorite scene was Jackie Chan dressing up as Chun Li and I love this movie for it's comedic moments so that's why when the South Korean tv series came out I wasn't very excited to watch it,but my girlfriend was a big Kpop fan and she got me in to watching it and to my surprise it was very good so I highly recommend it.Thanks the for the great review Oliver : )

Always enjoy hearing him talk, since I learned quite a few things about the movie business was in Hong Kong during its time as a British colony.

    Oliver, I know what's up regarding the HK laser discs part 1 & 2. In the early 90's, laser disc rentals in Hong Kong became very popular. In order to squeeze more money out of us, most movies came out in 2 discs. Roughly 30 minutes on each side. The Part 1 disc would be 2/3's or the movie, and Part 2 usually only used one side of the disc.
    It was a cheap trick to earn more money. As with all rentals, usually one movie was one rental ticket. In these cases we needed to use 2 tickets to rent one movie. This was a cheap shameful practice in the early 90's for Hong Kong home media.

      Stanlore Z haha Disc 1 would be in CLV and DIsc 2 in CAV? cheeky buggers! On the LaserDisc database some has listed part 1 at 99mins hence why I thought it was just alternative cover. But I think you're right I've never LDs being sold in two parts so it must be a rental scam lol www.lddb.com/laserdisc/46044/SEL0535H93/City-Hunter-(Sing-si-lip-yan):-Part-1-(1993)

    Great review Oliver, this is definatley one of my favourite JC films, it's not perfect but its profoundly entertaining, the movie is almost a spoof of the city hunter franchise overall.
    And yes bey Logan's commentaries are always entertaining, and it was through this film that I became aware of the manga and anime, which has just had its 30th anniversary and there will be a new OVA coming soon, I just done a video about it on the details.

    • @OliverHarper
      @OliverHarper  9 років тому +1

      Lantern Jaw Cheers man, yeah Bey Logan had mentioned it in his commentary but as you say it took the review off track but granted it would've added more to Jackie's frustration with the film and the director.

    • @Paul07791
      @Paul07791 9 років тому +1

      Oliver Harper Yeh, High Risk comes across as a poor man's City Hunter anyway. Kind of worth seeing if you wanted to know what caused the rift between Jackie and Jet Li, although it's Jackie Cheung's character that basically exists as a Jackie piss take.

    Yeah, Wong Jing... He made lots of these kind of broad-slaptick schlock films. He was banging Chingmy Yau at the time, so that's why she appeared in all his movies back then.
    You need to check out Wong Jing's "High Risk" with Jet Li. It's two hours of character assassination of Jackie Chan, based on Wong and Jackie's feud while making City Hunter.

    HKL was SO missed when they went down. I hoped they were doing well with the addition of Film Asia which had titles like Bang Rajan, Itchi the Killer (COUGH!!) etc. But it seemed there just wasn't enough demand for it. I managed to get a half of 70% of their releases before they went bust but was extremely lost without them for quality conversions.
    I like this review. You make some valid points & your editing is of workaholic showmanship as usual! What's your favourite JC film may I ask?
    Mine is Druken Master without a doubt. Not the second one which is like the Mario is Missing of fighting films, but the original. "I thought you were meant to be a teacher? You'd break a GORILA in half"! Ha Ha! Such a classic!

    if you seen it. the protector(1985) would be fascinating considering all the set drama and different versions of that movie. And it has jackie cussing. I also have a soft spot for battle creek brawl. The fights are really slow but if the movie was done a lil better(like giving chan more control with the action) it could have been a good early display of Chans ability. But that did not happen. And I love operation condor. When there is a big budget Hong Kong film. It's all on the screen.

    Like Under Seige but good. Yeah I love this one. It's so crazy and over-the-top but so entertaining. I can understand Jackie's disappointment in it but I think it holds up a lot better than many let on. The action alone makes it worth checking out and I never minded the use of gunplay or even Jackie killing people. It's kind of like a Jackie Chan film, crossed with the violence of a John Woo film and the over-the-top humour of an anime. And it's awesome.

    God, I forgot all about that one henchman that looked like Bill Bailey. I had the UK VHS release, with the Wong Jing interview and extra outtakes, and I don't recall it having the dance number. Good research into Jing. He's made some right shoddy stuff. Have you seen Naked Weapon, with Maggie Q?

    • @Texy88
      @Texy88 9 років тому

      LiamTheGreat That video version did not have that dance number; it had been cut out beforehand (not by the BBFC, so presumably the version the UK distributor got had it cut out on receipt - according to some other Bey Logan commentaries sometimes Hong Kong films did have bits removed in preparation for international releases before being sent to the countries in question, presumably because of the likelihood of those scenes either not going down too well or because they did not think that people in those countries would be able to understand the scene. I recall Bey saying that in some earlier international prints of “Project A” the Mah Jongg scene was completely cut before being sent to the West because Hong Kong did not think that people in that part of the world would be familiar enough with the game).

    Cary On Under Siege is how my brother always described it.
    The sexism and homophobia is dumb as hell, but I have a soft spot for this film. It's the one Hong Kong film that works better with the origin English dubb, because it heightens the stupidity of the film and somehow it makes more sense

    For a film made by an apparent sexist Chinese Roger Corman, this doesn't look that bad. That street fighter seen is so bizarre.

      Jack Park It is very amusing in places. When I first saw that Street Fighter II scene I just howled with laughter so much that I was crying! It was just brilliant!

    I think this movie is better tan The Legend of the drunken Master and I dont undestand why The Legend of the Drunken Master is so loved, but the original Drunken Master beats up both movies.

      Juan Luis Vargas Pareja I don't know if I'd call Legend of Drunken Master loved. Drunken Master II is loved, but Legend of Drunken Master is an terrible version of it.

    Really, you had an issue the way the women were portrayed in the film? You do know women can be portrayed as sexy and still be strong characters, correct? I don't get the need to desexualize women in order to make them strong characters. In fact all the women in the movie are shown to be strong as the men, at least in their martial arts skill and their ability to use firearms. The subbing about gay people I will give to you. I've only seen this movie dubbed though.

    i have city hunter in a jackie chan collection that comes with rumble in the bronx, mr nice guy, first strike and others but city hunter sucked all the others are good but city hunter i hated terrible i found it goofy

    I love 90s/80s Jackie chan but city hunter sucked. It has nothing to do with the comic outside the characters names and was way, way too silly. Chan balancing reality with comedy made the stunts more impressive and fun as well. This was just...Chans Ace ventura?
    The redeeming quality was the awesome street fighter scene (closest to a good live action film adaptation) though

    Asian women stop acting after they get married because they have more morals and values to not be put in the compromising positions that the occupation of actress puts them in. Duh. Not everywhere is as decadent and hedonistic as hellish America.
