The other day, my adult son stepped in cat vomit. He’s a germaphobe so I said I’d clean it off for him. Then I told him, “they call me puke cleaning up Momma back in Cincinnati. You may need to explain this moose fist. I am getting that, it is one of his fanciful wandering stories that are hilarious, but I feel like an outsider on an inside joke! 😂 I know he always uses the moose to explain something not belonging in an area. Does he mean you go on a mad search trying to find the 1 thing that really doesn't belong? Or you are the best at it? I'm telling you, my mind is just going off on a journey trying to figure this out. 😂😂
My sister in law is disabled and pregnant. She is a previous domestic violence victim. I am disabled too. I had cancer twice. We are de hoarding her apartment. She already has two children from her violent ex, age 4 and 6. The 6 year old is autistic and has adhd. She wants help, we are doing it together, very slowly but we are doing it! Your channel has helped me figure out where to start and how to clean without upsetting her. Bless you you are incredible humans x
I wish I knew about this channel 2 years ago. My fiancé's dementia stricken grandfather and father had contracted pneumonia from the condition the house was in. My mother had never met them, but while the father was hospitalized she took care of grandpa (who has since passed). She had to take out buckets of feces that were used as toilets by the alcoholic father - and bathe poor grandpa and feed him as he had been alone, scared, incontinent, for 3 days. As a 23 year old at the time, I rented out a dumpster and my Fiance, mother, me, and a friend went down and removed broken banisters, sealed off rooms that were hazardous, and added as many mobility tools as possible. I guess this is my long winded way of saying I appreciate and understand exactly how much time and effort you put into these projects. Even being young my body was so exhausted by the end of day 1 I couldn't sleep. It really can't be stated how amazing the effort you put in is.

He is correct, however if you have worked in a resturant you will know otherwise. Also If you are trashing tea, or coffee from those cabinets and if they are unopened there is a high chance the stuff is actually good. If I were him I would sort out the things from those bags and take whatever seems okay.
My dad and brother used to place freshly bought fruit on top of rotten fruit. For a person who is not a hoarder, it is hard to see how they live and the things they saw as normal.
I suppose you could always give out of date food to the zombies when the zombie apocalypse happens, that way it doesn’t go to waste, they get food poisoning and the the world is saved 😅
This needs to be talked about more. There area SLEW of people that are hoarders under the premise of ‘prepping’. When my father died it took a $1,000 construction dumpster rental and countless hours to get rid of it all. It’s extremely costly when you get stuck cleaning up one of these messes. 😢

It's amazing how the costly clean out only complicates an already emotional time. My son's Aunt was a crafter and reader and she hoarded like you would not believe.... she died 3 years ago and we're *still* not done. Thousands of dollars and a hundred thousand hours and we're still not done! If her house didn't abutt a national forest we would have burned it down. God knows it would have saved time and money!
@@Stephanie-we5ep Just invite other hoarders to come in and take what you, yourself, don't want. It shouldn't take very long once the word gets out that everything left behind is free for the taking.
Just make a detailed (®a!GS list posting and throw the stuff on the curb. People will come get it! For example " ice maker that fits 09 Magic Chef fridge" works better than " junk! Come take it"
That's why I'm doing a deep decluttering and cleaning now, while I'm only 82, and plan to keep up with it, so my kids won't have to later on. Finding much good stuff to offer to family before donating to my son's regular yard sales, and clearing out all cupboards that I can't easily reach any more, etc. All this is a gift I can still give, and it feels good.
This channel helped me to clean up my hoarder mess. I have OCD and have a hoarder issue, realizing that helps me to use my OCD to clean and getting rid of 60% of my stuff I don't need. Thanks for all involved, and Thank you FancyBootsJohnny for showing that its possible to show off the fancy boots down there in Massachusetts on a clean floor. Makes me want to shine in my own home 😂❤❤😊

I have trauma OCD. And my house gets clutter a lot, too. I have been trying to use my OCD to help with my organization, too.

I love all 3 of these channels but I only usually listen to UA-cam when I'm doing something else so the narration on this channel in particular is really helpful to me. And hardly anyone TRULY understands that this is related to REAL TRUE DISABILITY so it's hard to listen to most people talk about cleaning or whatever. They don't get it

I tried to watch Hoarders on Netflix but couldn’t get through it. They were so cruel to the hoarder, shaming and threatening her and acting like the psychologist could help her in 3 days. Your channel has changed my point of view. ❤
I agree. Quality (empathy, compassion, experience, intellect) over quantity (everything done too fast, thoughtlessly, just to wrap up a show) is so much better to watch, LET ALONE *live through* (for the homeowner).
Hoarders, the show. almost always left me feeling sad, unsettled, concerned for the person inhabiting the space
MMC & Mack have never ever made me worry about someone, compassion & respect are always present. although. I do have true concern for this husband. I really feel like I understand him, or relate to him on some level. So many comments say screw him; dump him & I have to say that does make me feel sad for him-
Even if this wife in this case needs to move on without him, that IS her choice & decision. She needs to do what is right for her. I can relate to her staying too bc of "For better or worse" etc ~ Some ppl REALLY view marriage vows extremely seriously & it blurs the lines where codependency comes in to play.

Trying to watch shows like that after understanding how different condition affect people make it so unenjoyable. For a valid reason obviously.
I've done the same, I've turned on hoarders just for back ground noise while I clean or draw. But within 10 minutes I have to turn it off.
They put up a disclaimer about hoarding being a mental disorder but then act like these people are just spoiled brats who can't clean. And then we're supposed to be shocked when they don't like a whole crew coming into their house and clearing everything out??
I'm not a hoarder but I do have depression so I've had a perpetual depression room most of my life. And even if I wanted help cleaning it, I get the fear and annoyance that comes with other people coming in and changing everything.
You have your own system, and while you might feel overwhelmed it's familiar. So it feel jarring to have people disrupt all of that in such a short time

The lady of the house must actually really love her husband to have stayed with him so long through all of this. Tbh, I love my husband dearly but my mental health and anxiety would have made it impossible for me to stay there among all that LONG ago. A collab between cleaning channels is not something I ever thought I’d see, but am pleasantly surprised by how much I like it!
Part of reasonable prepping is having those items easily accessible in an actual emergency. Just having an item doesn’t help. You have to maintain it, keep it in good condition, know where it is, know how to use it, etc. there’s definitely a difference between being prepared for an emergency and hoarding behavior.
We prep, but we rotate food and only buy what we normally eat. We have backups of household items, but a limited number of extra that only get replaced as we use something up.
Exactly! That's what we do. I have some food put away, but it's rotated as I purchase new. And it's limited and easily accessible.
You can have two or three years worth put up..and still be extremely organized, and know where every item is, and how much you have of every item.
Because I don’t eat a bunch of shelf stable food, when I originally stocked up, I definitely got too much . I’ve been trying out some recipes a couple times a month and items that just keep getting passed over I’ve been taking to a small food pantry a couple miles away. It’s a learning experience 😂
Trust me, when the you-know-what does hit the fan (and it will) everyone will be taking an inventory of what they have, fixing what is broken (if possible), and learning how to barter for whatever else they may need in order to ensure their survival. We just haven't gotten to that point, yet. Those who had/have no hoarding tendencies will be the first to suffer the consequences.

From now on, when life gets hard, I can hope that there’s a woman in her sunroom, peacefully beading and enjoying her relaxation time; and that alone can remind me that everyone, including me, deserves that kind of serenity too.
Re: Food prepping: I actually do this. Except I rotate. I figured out what we ate that I could prep. Noodles, spaghetti sauce, cans of veg, etc etc. Then I strive to have at least a three month supply on hand. I rotate through them so I use the oldest first. It came in super useful during covid. There was no panic. We just stayed home and ate what we had.
Advice to those wanting to prep: In stress situations what your body wants is comfort food. It doesn't want to experiment with new things. It wants simple filling food. And it wants treats. For the love of everything good, make sure you store treats. For me, that's chocolate chips. If you've got flour, sugar, cocoa powder, oil, and chocolate chips the world is your freaking oyster.
YES! i discovered that i could store food prep home meal components like pasta and veggies very recently, and i've always been a can-hoarder because i grew up in a home with some hoarding tendencies and not seeing extra food in the house made me feel anxious. but ever since we hit rock bottom financially, and havent had the money to go out and buy our usual meals, my food storage has saved our butts time and time again - and i expect it to continue to do so since our food benefits have been cut drastically short and delayed. Rotation of supplies is key; It also makes you focus on what you actually have, what you're not using, and what not to replace because no one in the household actually likes the stuff. It's great to have buckets of rice and beans, but you have to have variety or you suffer 'food fatigue' and just don't want to eat what you have. You have to get beyond the survival mindset and remember to actually live while you're doing so. There's a difference between hoarding and prepping; hoarding is a mental issue, with prepping, we get to wear tin-foil hats and that's kinda fun, not gonna lie.
Yes! The people in that house prepped so much but then didn’t bother to rotate. Very unfortunate.
I am overcoming hoarding tendencies but decided I needed to store some bottled water and tinned food after I read our area's flood risk assessment. I had zero room in my tiny kitchen, but I bit the bullet and got rid of all kitchen appliances and implements I no longer used. The extra space has meant I now have a month's worth of food and 2 weeks of drinking water in my backstock cupboards. Its organised in a way that I can easily access and rotate through.
@@peaches65835 Being prepared for the type of emergency your area is prone to is a valuable thing. Our state government even reminds people in the cyclone season to have an emergency kit. On Christmas night our area was hit by a tornado. That is unheard of here. And people were without power for weeks which has pretty terrible because the worst hit area needed power to pump their tank water. So no toilets or showers. We were having a heat wave too. Fun times indeed.
You were very truthful when you said cleaning the hoard won’t help the illness. Not only will it not help the illness, cleaning will likely exacerbate the illness. Like you mentioned, the husband sees this process as a punishment, he is resentful about the previous episode of cleaning and you are absolutely correct that he will start buying and hoarding as soon as he’s back home. I can’t imagine how difficult it is when trying to help someone who not only doesn’t want the help, but resents it as well.
It depends on how much he wants to save his marriage. Incentive can do a lot. I left my first husband because he wouldn't allow me to straighten up his stuff. Not get rid of, just straighten it so we could use the front door. My father-in-law complained after I left that he had to cart 4 truckloads of crap to the dump. My mom told me this as if it was my fault and I was literally speechless. None of that crap was mine. Not one bit. But as the wife, I got blamed for the state of the house even though I lived under threats if I touched any of it.
Just to say, I didn't go back to him, and he didn't change. In fact, one woman he dated complained to me (!) about how messy he was! Yeah? As if I didn't know?

The cleaning is really for the wife. She needs to de stress, get the strength to process & RESOLVE THIS. This is not a marriage but a hostage situation.
We cleaned a flat of my ex husband's great-grandmother. She had severe hoarding too. She didnt allow to clean while alive and when her granddaughter swept the small place from bed to doors that was clutter free, she had to show her the showel and she took out any paper or piece of plastic that was there. Only pure dust could leave the flat. She collected around the neighborhood empty bottles, butter wrappers, milk cartons and other things, flattened them, tied neatly and stored in her flat. There wwre othwr things too. Pioneer wardrobes for several classes, antique stockings, soup and detergents enough for a decade of cleaning and things like that. Had things from soviet times till present. House was filled till the ceiling. And she also had a lot of stuff with expiration date long ended. Nasty things, like 40 years old fish and such. When she died we all went to clean and one person broke a glass jar with about 20 year old fish, she started to vomit on the spot. Apparently glass jar and vinegar marinade prevented the fish to complete disolve but kept it in some awful state all those years. It was horrible. And after we cleaned most or garbage from the kitchen evening came and from ventilation shafts came out a cloud of moths. It filled almost all the kitchen, most likely went to search for their evening meal as usual but it was gone. I got so scared of that cloud, it looked so big that it could eat me.
I appreciate you validating the very human need to suplex strangers at the grocery store. It's so frowned upon in society that every time I'm at the grocery store there's always a couple random dudes who interrupt me by yelling "you can't do that!" and trying to put these weird connected bracelets on me that would prevent my next suplex. Luckily I'm quick enough to suplex them first, but then I have to leave the store or they won't stop trying. It sucks being harassed every time I just want to buy some food.

I can totally understand how something like this can happen, I was raised to keep an immaculate house. However, since my son passed away, I could care less about anything. I have no motivation and no desire to do the deep cleaning that I used to do. It’s still presentable for the most part, but I can see the difference in how I’ve let things go… Thank you for what you all do and your understanding

When my daughter passed, I suffered from the same problem. It’s been 10 years since she died and I just now am starting to be able to clean like I used to. But it’s still nothing like I used to in terms of housecleaning. It just doesn’t seem as important anymore. Depression is a weird mistress.

For that woman to have a clean living room and be able to enjoy her sunroom again was the greatest gift you could give her. I know how much better I feel when my home is clean and decluttered. Thank you to all of you for all you do.
There was a tv show in Australia where they took all of the contents from the home of a hoarder and laid them out in a shed. They sorted into categories and took measurements of the sheer amount of space that all of the gear used. Then they worked with the owners helping them to see the volume of what they owned, how much they had duplicated and helped the owners to decide what to keep, sell, donate and throw away. I don’t recall if they ever revisited these families years down the track to see if they were able to maintain a changed lifestyle but you could see a number of them finally coming to terms with what they had been doing and the impact on those around them. The sheer scale of some hoarding was astonishing. On a smaller scale I have been trying to address this with my elderly father for several years now with some successes and some failures. Sadly if he has spent money on an item, it still has value even if broken and he struggles to dispose of it.

We’ve got Stacy Solomon Sorts Your Life Out in the UK she gets a team to put every single item in a warehouse or hanger and all the items are paired up to show how much stuff they have in their home and sometimes something so little and meaningful to them she will repurpose ❤

After getting severe food poisoning from sour cream that "should be okay", I am now gleeful about discarding old food. We can even compost most of it. And I'm helping our nation's farmers by buying food, even if I don't get to it all 🇺🇸 🍅🇺🇸😅

I loved that Mack said that about eating the 10 year old almonds in a moldy basement. These cleanings motivate me, too, and curb and correct some hoarding for me. Very helpful comments, insight, compassion, and great sense of humor.

Your videos are so validating for me. I recently went to my parents house and found medication that had expired in 2009. I didn't even look at the dates on the food, because seeing how much the hoard had grown was painful enough. In good news though, I got one room cleaner than it had been in decades using your jigsaw puzzle method. Move stuff from one small section onto the floor, clean the surface, then put everything back but organized and wiped off.
The crazy names in the beginning are actually very helpful. It’s how I can tell if I’ve already watched the video.

Well, I actually do it too, and I thought it was a reasonable thing to do… to make sure you’re using up the older one first! I don’t want some old item sitting in the back forever never getting used. Guess I’m weird. 😂

I hate that show--shaming people for what is really a mental health issue, all for ratings. And showing up with all those dump trucks and a camera crew is beyond cruel. These three angels show so much compassion and empathy while preserving the dignity of the people they are helping.
I’ve learned so much about the mental health issues involved in hoarding. One of your videos where you talked about the areas of the brain that are directly responsible for these conditions, and how getting rid of things causes them actual physical pain, was so incredibly mind blowing to me. And also gave me so much more compassion for people. Thank you for all you do for others!

I’ve been folding laundry that has been sitting for weeks since it was done. I’m almost done with all the dishes in my kitchen.
This was inspiring! I actually took cups and saucers (that were part of a stoneware dinner set) to the dump today. I had not used them, ever, in 38 years! They were just taking up space I needed. I also threw away something I thought I would repair for the last 18 years. It felt good! I boxed up some other things to donate. And, I really needed to hear that chipmunk talk!
My mother would save the envelopes from junk mail, open them all the way up and use them to write down her grocery lists or as what she called "scratch paper". She grew up during the Great Depression when paper was not always available.
Plus it's all embodied energy. Seems crazier to me to throw out usable paper and then buy paper...

My mom would cut old clothes into 1/4 to 1/2 inch strips, then make "rag rugs" using a crochet hook (or sometimes just her fingers). Worn sheets also were turned into handkerchiefs, dinner napkins, and pillow cases. We live in such a wasteful generation.
My mom still does that.
My mother-in-law did that, too, and I started doing it. Why buy a note pad? I actually cut the envelopes into note-paper size and clip them together.
@@debpratt52 There were 6 kids in my family and we all had to have spiral or composition notebooks for school. After school was over, my mom would tear out any pages that were full and use the rest for other purposes....writing notes, bookmarks, letters, jotting down recipes, playing "Hangman" and "Tic-Tac-Toe", or whatever. Sometimes she would tear out sheets from spiral-bound notebooks, cut the torn edges off and because they had 3 holes on one side, she would place the sheets into a loose-leaf notebook, just in case we kids ran out of notebook paper for school. She would even save the coiled wire from those spiral notebooks to use around the house. They worked great for hanging things. She often said, "Use your head for something other than a hat rack." LOL
The work the 4 of you did was amazing. I admit it made me sad and I cried when you spoke of the woman coming down stairs and seeing the change and knowing she could use her sun room again. Even if it was for a short time. Lawd, I have a sun room I enjoy and understand how she feels about being out there. How depressing having a spouse so ill mentally that it destroys your own mental stability. Sad. Y'all did great work there.

Thanks to you, I am becoming more and more conscious of my prepping hoard. We hadn't cleaned out our spice cabinet since we moved to this house in 2016, and my daughter was so proud of me for telling her to toss any spices expiring by 2016. Thank you for all you do.
With things like the fridge, it can be easier if you take a picture. I mean clean out every bit of food, and take a picture so you know exactly where each shelf or drawer goes. You may also want to count the indents (there’s 4 shelf spaces between the drawer and the shelf above it). My dad and I sometimes paint multiple rooms or a whole house at one time, and we take pictures of what pictures go where on the wall, and how the top of each dresser (or cabinet in the kitchen) needs set back up. That way, we can just lay everything flat or remove items and lay drop cloths over them. My dad gets annoyed with me sometimes because we are literally there to paint, and he’ll find me cleaning something that doesn’t effect the walls, ceilings, or baseboards in any way lol. I seriously have to pull myself away. I LOVE cleaning and organizing.

Ya know, sometimes it gets down to the point of 'it needs to go'-whether it 'could' be eaten under circumstance X or not, or recycled, or donated. Same thing with 'good stuff' that cost a lot of money, or is sentimental, or...whatever. At some point, we each have to consider what our stuff is ACTUALLY costing us. If it costs a marriage or a relationship with your children, the cost is too high regardless of what it is. 'People over possessions' is one of my new mantras.
I don't know if her marriage will survive this, but it makes me happy to know she could enjoy the clear space and her beautiful sunroom again! Much love to the wife. Also, I feel bad for the husband out of compassion, he has not reached his breaking point (divorce?) and experienced rock bottom, it is tough and I wish him the best in hopefully getting mental care. Regarding the "emergency food" in those buckets- **if** it's the purpose-made prepper kind of food, freeze dried and packed in mylar with oxygen absorbers and all that, it really does have an official shelf life of 20-30 years. It's also really expensive compared to regular grocery store food.
If it's just regular shelf stable food, like pasta and beans and four lifetime supplies of almonds, nah. I know hoarders won't listen to "you really should throw this out," but specifically preppers might listen to the principle of "first in, first out" and utilize things like can dispensers that make it easier to rotate stock as they use it.

the second of four children…. His Mom had been managing a farm, raising kids and working at a poultry plant during Great Depression era. My Dad never overcame his fear of lack. Even carefully throwing out cans of food which were rusted & prior to dates on cans… it could set him off as if you shot someone he loved. He always had more connection to stuff than people. When he passed he had an entire locked room full of giant totes which he ziptied and often had locks on. Inside the totes were toilet paper, tide, etc. I split it up between 6 families after he passed and it lasted my own family nearly two years.

At 64 years young I replaced the upstairs toilet seat. It was not my first rodeo😊 $12.00ish Walmart. 😮It came with some assembly required. 9 parts. It aged me 1 year to apply the new seat. NINE PARTS! I thought I needed a tiny pill under my tongue.

I cleaned an elderly relatives’ pantry recently. We found things with a best before last millennium. Something was marked ‘newly opened 1992’. And I found an older packet of that. Plenty of things with bb in the early 2000s.
And the kitchen didn’t even look like a hoarder house. Just a regular sized pantry with things shoved far in 😅
That’s what my parents (and mine too) kitchen is like. We just don’t throw out stuff if we don’t use it and it doesn’t start to smell. I threw away spices from 1982 last time I was there, I figured they didn’t have that much taste left in them.
I appreciate that you took everyone’s safety into mind and didn’t spin kick the kitchen clean.

One key thing that helps me is keeping a trash bin near the back door. A good supply of construction bags. I keep a bag going that I empty the trash bags into. Boxes get flattened and put in the burn pile. I keep a bag for shred material.
I started wondering about the rotting seeds that emitted the horrific smell, ran into a story about an entire family dying from gasses emitted from rotting potatoes in their basement. I did some research regarding "rotting seeds" and they emit hydrogen sulfide. Be careful, don't need anyone injured or dying while cleaning someone's else's mess.

It was right to acknowledge that with him still in the picture the house would eventually return to this state, but this gives her breathing space-literally!- for a time. I wish my sister could be helped this way, her husband is a true hoarder that includes recyclables in trash bags that never get taken out and actually recycled. I owned a cleaning service for 15 years. What I used to clean porcelain sinks was baking soda it worked amazingly.

my boyfriends mom struggles with hoarding - luckily not too severely, but whenever i’m over to see my boyfriend for the weekend, i normally try to help out with cleaning, even if it’s just taking out trash or wiping things off
occasionally i’ll get to spend hours sorting through big piles of all of their stuff and helping them keep important things and getting rid of garbage or donating what they don’t need
his parents are always really appreciative when i help out with that stuff especially since his mom is so overworked so she can never find the time to do it herself
i love seeing how happy it makes them when they see that i’ve cleaned up something that they have put off for so long
i’m over so often that i almost do that sort of stuff as a payment to them for feeding me all the time and buying me things
i also help with making everyone dinner sometimes and help with general clean ups too but big cleaning days are definitely some of my favourites to do there
i love watching your content because it reminds me of when i get to help people close to me clean since lots of people i know struggle with hoarding. keep up the great work!

I truly pray the husband gets the help he needs to learn new coping mechanisms for hoarding. I grew up in a hoarding household. And I'm the complete opposite of what I grew up in. I'm a clean freak and everything has to have a place and purpose. Or it gets tossed. Definitely looking forward to the ladies videos as well. Sending all the love and light to you all from Texas 😊
If you have kids, please be lenient with their things. A lot of hoarders attribute their hoarding to a parent who constantly threw things away, which mattered to them.
@@SIC647 That might be true for some of the younger hoarders, but most middle aged and elderly hoarders have different reasons.
But I agree, don't just go and declutter your kids' things. Talk to them about it and only toss broken stuff, for example. A great way to keep up with toy clutter is not bringing it into the house in the first place - relatives need to be on board with it, too.
