Krist actually used a Jazz Bass style bass called an ibanez Black Eagle. Using any J Bass with just the bridge is pretty accurate

In 1992 Krist had a Gibson Thunderbird at the show I was at. Now in 1989 he had a Ibanez if I remember correctly

Krist is the reason I play bass. I was 10 years old and heard "Smells Like Teen Spirit", specifically the verse when the guitar cuts out. I heard the bass and immediately said to myself "I have to do that." I remember it plain as day.

Thd funny thing is most of these bass players don't sweat over getting a distinctive tone, they probably just fart around with the controls to get something they like.
Anyway most of the time it's the sound engineer that get the desired sound.

Kris's tone still had a bit more brightness and bite than this, but it's close. Close as in it sounds like fingers vs. a pick on the same settings.
Also, two soapbar humbucker basses are probably the easiest to find these days. It's the geometry of the coils and windings inside that matter. The pickup shape is just a housing.
