Also, your trick for testing the replacement sensor prior to removing the valve from the heater is clever, but I actually didn't need to modify the edge of the cover to accommodate the cable; I just threaded the cable through the COM hole, connected it to the board and installed the cover with the sensor hanging outside. The disconnected cable from the existing sensor in the well can be shoved inside the housing, above the metal valve, to get it out of the way during this test.
