- Arabic Philosophy within/without the Western Canon
December 4, 2013
It has become standard in Western histories of philosophy to recognize the contributions of the Muslim philosophers Avicenna and Averroes. This is entirely commendable, though it is important to consider how the two Arabic Aristotelians (and possibly their cohort) are presented. Are they presented primarily as transmitters of Greek learning into Latin medieval philosophy? Or as individual geniuses from an otherwise strange environment? This talk discusses some of the challenges of integrating the broader Arabic tradition into the teaching of Western philosophy, and why the effort is worthwhile nonetheless.
