Yes it does run off the battery, so disconnect any devices when parking / storing the bike. The OptiMate USB charger will switch off if the battery has around 50% charge remaining (12.4V is voltage level it cuts out at), sufficient power to restart the bike, but other devices may not have a low voltage cut-out.
You would have to connect it to the wiring of the 12V socket. The wiring is meant for the motorcycle 12V system that is universal world-wide. The USB referred to is the O100 USB charger that runs from 12V and supplies 5V 1000mA. All USB devices world-wide are supplied with 5V.
There is an auxiliary socket right on top of the battery. You just need the two pin connector. It shuts off about 1 minute after the bike. Lots of folks use that spot for their gps. At 0:37 you can see it. Almost touching index finger of installer.
