I figured that out long ago. Basically it is is pure projection. YOU see that in people such as narcissists, the prime example of course being Trump. PEOPLE soon learned from watching Trump for four years that everything he said about the opposition was true about him and NOT about the opposition. THAT'S just how they roll. IT'S not just exclusive to narcissists and fascists, a lot of people do that sort of thing. MY antenna goes up the minute they say something that I know is NOT TRUE, so I then say to myself: THANK YOU, you JUST told me what's TRUE about you. And forewarned is forearmed!🔪🖊🦅🐲. Early on in life, I realized that people who project--be they a fascist or a sibling-- cannot handle the pain of admitting that that quality is in them. Of course, ONCE you accept the pain, it begins to transmute. It NEVER stays the same because in nature NOTHING stays the same. Then you can rise above it like the phoenix🕊. BUT if you won't admit it-- you won't acknowledge it-- then it stays stuck in you and you endlessly project it. THAT rat, cornered by Putin as a young boy, jumped and bit him in the face and I think he's NEVER processed THAT pain, tgat fear. Masha Gessen, a naturalized Russian American, said how people ate people following the demise of the Soviet Union because there was so little money and so little food and so much desperation. LATER I figured out they were probably people who had died from starvation but nevertheless, Russians ate Russians. There's a lot of pain historically in Russia & either consciously or unconsciously that pain & thise fears feed Putin's thoughts which he then projects onto the blank slate of democracies everywhere. ONLY a very disturbed Russian fascist could say that a Russian-speaking Jewish president in the biggest European country was a Nazi & led a anti-Semitic regime. AND yet many of my neighbors here in Texas believe him and quote that when they tell me that the election for Zelensky was fixed. MY response I could tell left them flabbergasted & tongue tied because I NEVER fight with someone who I sense is projecting, and nonsense at that, so I said: " Yes, isn't it strange that a Russian-speaking Jew from Eastern Ukraine became the president of ALL of Ukraine and lives in the Western part of Ukraine? 😧 HE did know how to answer to THAT ONE!😉. IN all events I'm glad the speaker pointed out that this is a function of fascism and not just individual people who live in denial and project everything that they can't handle which is usually quite a bit.
The Republican party uses this strategy all the time. Rick Scott floated some new "plan" and on it, one of his talking points was---I kid you not-- "preventing Democrats from doing Voter Fraud." When it was found the Republican Party in Florida was preying on old and poor English speakers to switch their voter registration from Dem to Repub under the guise of "updating" their voter registration. These people had not idea their political party affiliation had been switched against their will.

I had to smile at Jason's mom saying that the reason the U.S. would be able to overcome the Nazi's after seeing U.S. Troops marching, some chewing gum & poking each other. It's the optimism I feel hearing the Ukrainian PERFECT response to "Russian Warship" threatening the men on Snake Island; Ukrainians interrupting Russian Transmissions with Heavy Metal Music; singing songs about Turkish Drones. It doesn't lessen the knowledge of the horror of the war, but it is a reminder that regardless, They remain themselves which is their overwhelming strength!

Because in the U.S., if you put all of the remnants of the idealism and impressive procedures established by the Founding Fathers - whom we revere as if they were gods … all of that on one side, one plate, of the old scale, and put the weight of capital and the influence of money 💰 on the other one, the democracy in the first plate will fly out the window from the heavy impact of Capital in the other plate. Come to think of it, democracy already HAS flown out the window. And to the top tier of wealthy capitalists, all that antiquated stuff is for the birds anyway. We the People hear birdsong but feel almost nothing of our supposed Democracy. This reminds me of some of Sherrilyn Ifill's analysis, with the depth of connections explained and the boldness it takes to explicitly put the ideas and dynamics together out loud.
The reaction of the US on the 9/11 attacks (the Iraq war, the war in Afghanistan, the curtailment of individual rights in the US) have strongly helped all kinds of nationalistic, authocratic regimes all over the world. For instance: China is using just the same rhetoric in regard of the Oigurs, as the US has said towards those prisoners of Guantanamo Bay, who were innocent. Read Ben Rhodes about it.
Regarding "business leaders who destroyed our economy", not only do we not punish them, but some are even senators. McConnell and Romney come immediately to mind. There are probably more.
Zero connection. Biden has done more executive orders in his first year than Trump did. This is intellectual garbage. Putin is pure evil and in a league all by himself
The damage continued because the Democratic Party has no zeal for justice and won’t pursue the coup plotters. Merrick Garland is at the center of the massive cover-up of many such plots. Listen to Gaslit Nation podcast of Ukraine expert Andrea Chalupa and Sarah Kendzior. They nail that creep to the wall, but no one in Congress is listening.
This answers so many questions about what is going on, why some minorities so defiantly defend the far right? For example, I've always wondered about that and.... Those laws in Florida about don't say gay that in still fear in people about children, those are thinly veiled laws to attack LGBTQ in general. There is no way that the complexity of this man's arguments and insights, can ever be absorbed by those who need it most, because they are so defensive and so I just don't think there any other word for it but brainwashed..... By far right media, including of course Fox and OAN. It is so frustrating to know all this and to understand it and not be able to convey it in a way that they would hear. It's like they're closing their ears like a 4-year-old saying yada yada yada doesn't want to hear what you're trying to explain to them. This is so dangerous and so upsetting to not be able to communicate these ideas to those who are held captive by this fascist right wing movement.
Finally, someone who makes sense. Yet - there's more to humanity than logic and reason. I hope the powers that be, have learned from fascisim. Holocaust prevention requires vigilance and a constant presence of awareness. Plus - more than obvious or veiled placation.
But neither of them has what it takes to rule over a major superpower. HOWEVER, UK di have a woman who was a ruthless Leader, Maggie Thatcher! Remember her?
Jason Stanley speaks so clearly about what is going on. We also need to clearly see that we have never come to terms with the collective trauma of the Natives and African people in this land by the oligarchy of a few European men who have sadly continued their legacy, manifesting as the easily influenced, absent of emotional intelligence. We need a caring economy; the winner/loser mentality of capitalism is at odds with the principle of equality in democracy.
He's right (Putin). US Democracy _is_ dysfunctional. Just not quite as dysfunctional as he was betting on. I find this encouraging. It's easy to think all is lost when we look at the Senate, for example. It is messed up for sure, but not _lost_ yet.
He's actually right, democracy is inherently weak, especially when it gets complacent. What Putin didn't understand is how much stronger democracy can be in it's distributed ideology, resolve, and force. It has a far bigger base, like a pyramid. Autocracy is an inverted pyramid... It crumbles and falls when the bottom goes.
Sadly the modern day church is so apostate to God.. there are maybe o ly 1% of churches that still work as true Christian views. The other 99% of churches have fallen to political pandering, both on the left and right because Progressive Christians are no better than The Christian Right
I listened to a program on NPR this morning on Hughey P. Long, a populist in LA in the 30's who appealed to people suffering from the struggles of the Depression. The point was made that populism is always linked to authoritarianism. Please distinguish between the political issues of that time leading up to World War II & today's issues with Trump Republicans & Trump's transparent desire to be an autocrat. I am especially concerned with the impact that Trump's brand of autocracy/populism (along with Marine Le Pen & Le Front National in France) is having on the war that has broken out with Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Why can't people seem to see the parallel's between the rise of the Third Reich & Europe's reluctance to wage war against it until they were personally threatened, along with Amerrican reluctance to enter the war, once war had actually broken out? Aren't we haeaded down the same path now?
Been saying more or less the same thing myself since Putin helped himself to Crime without so much as a by your leave. I'm amazed he hasn't used the phrase "last territorial demand in Europe" yet.
1) How has MTG not been bankrupted by a Nigerian prince 2) Without a doubt, the feedback loop of Russia's unique brand of fascism is the most damaging legacy of technicolor. Since they have updated their tropes through its mastery. Hence homeboy's sparkling white turtleneck (which purposely has the macabre meet surreal.) 3) But that is how you beat this monster, literally prove he's human with consistently different types of "air raids"? Thanks!!
Although I more than appreciate what this young man is saying, I think he misinterprets a few things Americans are fallible humans; that does not mean we are not strong and can rise to the occasion and do the right thing;; our Constitution admonishes us that a person is innocent until proven guilty; that applies to any criminal, including war criminals; we must respect our rule of law; this is not a sign of weakness, but a sign that we can show restraint and do not allow ourselves to descend into indiscrimate killing, i.e., mob rule. We have a remarkable system that is flexible and adptable to whatever circumstances present themselves. Our system is constantly being tested. Mistakes are part of that. A Facist mentality cannot understand these manifestations because it needs a rigid consensus by people, which will never happen and is ruled by behavior that cannot admit to a mistake. It is quick to crticize, subject to outbursts of anger and the need to punish those that are comfortable with themselves, unafraid and flexible. Inside they are full of despair and sorrow, needing to see themselves as something significant. This is not strength, and it has nothing to do with gender. The need to control externals is ever present. People such as this are not well mentally.
In the UK democracy was nearly destroyed by one man, John Bercow, the speaker of the house who demonstrated autocratic behaviour WITHIN a democracy and nearly brought it down. Fortunately the people see the wood for the trees and counteract attempts to weaken it. But if your electoral system is open to abuse and manipulation democracy is compromised. It's up to the leaders of democratic nations to make sure their electoral system is beyond corruption. Electoral reforms are needed in some countries
Exactly. Plus the American presidency is too immune from accountability and carries too much privilege. Also their notions of freedom are too libertine, favouring individual rights over social responsibilities.
Absolute bollox, Brexit is a fascist project, sold on lies and perversion of history. Banks & Farage have strong links with Russia, Bojo the Clown makes Lebedev a lord against security service. As PM Bojo suppressed the report into his own previous department's failure to investigate Russian referendum interference. You guys blame Bercow .. what a joke! There's a reason why the Brexit press called judges enemies of the people, looking exactly like the Nazi German press, because they enforced the law Brexit is about establishing crony capitalism, keeping the Londongrad laundromat. It empowered racist thugs who attacked people and the Conservative government said nothing. Bercow did his job, ensuring debate and constitutional law, that is DEMOCRACY. The debacle that is Brexit was rammed through without resolving any of the problems. There's no accountability, the government has continually broken the law and there's been continual attacks on human rights.
Wow, something we all know, but no one in the MSM has been addressing. What Russia is doing is deplorable, but it would help if the US had more of a moral authority. It doesn't help that Russia can point to the US and say "they do it too" even if it is a false equivalence.
Shameful knowing it’s not all that false of an equivalent either. Cold War ethics have us all by the gonads. It will kill the species if we don’t change it.
What Russia is doing is deplorable, but we have done it in the US for longer than we like to admit. The Nazi party studied the US as did the South African govt before designing apartheid. We are the example for the world in both good and bad
I can't take it. Stanley needs speech therapy - TODAY. People who "stutter" by repeating entire phrases are unqualified to speak in public. And like all Americans Stanley thinks that yelling louder covers up his errors.
I read your article and want to thank you, especially linking Russian ideology coined by Dugin with fascism. This is so important to understand why this war against Ukraine was waged under those flags of the so called "de-nacification".
We broke our own rules when we conquered Hawaii, even by Resolution, in the 1890s and abolished their independence officially. It still illegally occupied to this day.
Hypocritical? Yep, we are that too often. Weak? The inexorable march of democracy in the past 200 years around the world, proves its strength and durability.
Maybe it is time to separate the states🤔 This bipolar entity we are dealing with is so exhausting and draining beneficial energy. All empires fall in history❤️🌎✌🏼…And I would like to hear from people living in Greenes district..is it a real district🤔 it’s so unreal to me that people want to follow her
A panel that would include Jason Stanley and Timothy Synder in a colloquial forum might be useful for those believing or understanding any stake in civil society.
The opposite of hypocrisy and weakness is authoritarianism. Democracy is like science- the best, imperfect attempt at not being ruled from the top down. Freedom is messy. See Erich Fromm ‘Escape from Freedom’
Spiritual balance is rare...these days.. I know i am privileged in that way.. i am always hopeful for God to do the unexpected and great things because that is his delight!
We forgive our own war criminals by doing nothing about them. Americans want democracy, but often the American government removes itself from the rules of conscience when the requirements of democracy reach too far up the chain. Our elites enjoy extraordinary exemption.
America is not the only democracy. It’s not even the best democracy. Nor the first democracy. We’re an imperial democracy is about it. But that doesn’t mean we can’t rise to the challenge and redeem this sorry human world.
Laissez faire in démocratic countries has led to this....😡poo-tin certainly thought he had the right of way.there is other places as well(Myanmar etc)but this one is more up front because its so close to us😰
So how did that thought come to Putin? Looking at all going on in our country for a few years, can we in clean conscience say Putin is wrong? The answer hurts but it should work as a wake-up call for us.
The inherent issue with democracies is they incorporate free speech which means that groups within trying to move to dictatorship are highly free to give it the college try. Maybe some fines for causing huge disruption. Can't be changed because that's what a democracy is so just have to hope that >> 50% of citizens aren't too lazy so they obtain broad information and >> 50% of citizens have enough brainpower to understand how they are being manipulated. Cross fingers really.
Maybe if Mrs Ammanpour investigated and reported her findings on Mr Moshe Menuhin’s take on might and power she and the rest of us wouldn’t be so surprised.

It is time the US is honest with itself. Political lobbying through direct funding is the problem. This will always open the US, or any democracy which has it, at risk of external influence. What brought it about, those who brought it about, and those who are ever trying to open the gates for this destructive lobbying further, is where the problem started, and making the problem worst. US democracy is fine. Your political campaign system is atrocious.

Yes. That was a horrible turning point for our nation.
@@mtn1793 I'm very sorry. However, we all have our demons to attend to...
Excellent discussion and interview thank you
Gosh this man is so articulate. Cuts right to it.
His not that articulate because you not understanding about the West and how the game being played
He is against everything of your values. you need to double-check your values
It was so close to have another Putin in the United States of America. So close!!!!!
👍👍👍👍
Putin was grooming Trump!
Regarding "business leaders who destroyed our economy", not only do we not punish them, but some are even senators.
McConnell and Romney come immediately to mind. There are probably more.
the trump thing is the direct cause of the Russian lunacy we're seeing.
Zero connection. Biden has done more executive orders in his first year than Trump did. This is intellectual garbage. Putin is pure evil and in a league all by himself
Ahhh the ultimate narcissist...if he gets in again I'm moving out of the country...just NOT to Russia!!!
Putin lead Trump down the rabbit hole!
@azzi prophet or troll??
How much damage will do this one term, double impeached clown ...uffff...
FOR SURE !!!
Pay to educate all the children, and do not allow parents and pastors to indoctrinate them into lies.
More Jason Stanley please. He is brilliant and blunt.
I am smarter now. Thank you Professor Stanley
Jason is one of the major voices explaining fascism and how to defeat it, in the world today.
An informative interview! Thanks!
GOP *embracing* Fascism probably also has something to do with it.
People need to really hear this and act to counter it in all forms possible!
No I don't want to counter it
Finally, someone who makes sense.
Yet - there's more to humanity than logic and reason.
I hope the powers that be, have learned from fascisim.
Holocaust prevention requires vigilance and a constant presence of awareness.
Plus - more than obvious or veiled placation.
Do you know what the word Humanity came from? And what is it?
Yes women too, look at Marjorie Tylor Greene, Boebart,….who can’t stop praising Trump in every turn.
But neither of them has what it takes to rule over a major superpower. HOWEVER, UK di have a woman who was a ruthless Leader, Maggie Thatcher! Remember her?
Also Queen Elizabeth I, King Henry's VIII daughter
@@steppenwolf3252 Whatever her flaws, she was hardly playing the ethno-nationalist card. To pretend otherwise is either ignorance or disingenuous.
Governor DeSantis [R] in Florida and others are definitely using Putins playbook.
Agree with you on this. It is dangerous.
Prof. Stanley's voice, as a leading source of illumination of the means/methods of Fascist thinking, is just beyond value today. +1+1+1
He's right (Putin). US Democracy _is_ dysfunctional.
Just not quite as dysfunctional as he was betting on.
I find this encouraging. It's easy to think all is lost when we look at the Senate, for example. It is messed up for sure, but not _lost_ yet.
We are very close to being a fascist theocracy. This radically religious Supreme Court has many years on the bench to accomplish & fine tune it.
Luckily a NON fascist theocrat has just been confirmed as SCOTUS justice.
Excellent interview.
Thanks much. ♡
Good point.
I have been thinking about this very topic for a month.
They’re preaching Q-Anon at my cousin’s church in Arizona.
Glad I'm not there
What type of church? Evangelical?
Need to revoke tax-exempt status of political churches.
@@atomicstyle7344 Yes, Evangelical, non-denominational.
Sadly the modern day church is so apostate to God.. there are maybe o ly 1% of churches that still work as true Christian views. The other 99% of churches have fallen to political pandering, both on the left and right because Progressive Christians are no better than The Christian Right
Here come the Trump trolls with no critical thinking skills.
No thinking required for the followers of the orange faced clown 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
Where? Where? I don't see them Elizabeth. Protect me!
welcome to the american autocrat party, formerly known as the republican party.
That’s why Trump loves Putin so much. Accusing your opposition of what you are.
Everyone would do well to listen to this conversation.
Yes.
Been saying more or less the same thing myself since Putin helped himself to Crime without so much as a by your leave. I'm amazed he hasn't used the phrase "last territorial demand in Europe" yet.
What a great interview...ordering the book!!
1) How has MTG not been bankrupted by a Nigerian prince
2) Without a doubt, the feedback loop of Russia's unique brand of fascism is the most damaging legacy of technicolor. Since they have updated their tropes through its mastery. Hence homeboy's sparkling white turtleneck (which purposely has the macabre meet surreal.)
3) But that is how you beat this monster, literally prove he's human with consistently different types of "air raids"?
Thanks!!
Eye Fricking Opening!! Heading to the 🏳️🌈 Pride Parade this year. Minorities must stick together to protect our hard won freedoms and equality.
I like this guy!💚✌🌷
Read his book! It's a great read. Clear and concise.
Thank you, Jason Stanley!!
I’m not sure where do you think there’s misinterpretation on his part; I think his discourse doesn’t contradict what you’re saying.
There's a reason why the Brexit press called judges enemies of the people, looking exactly like the Nazi German press, because they enforced the law
Brexit is about establishing crony capitalism, keeping the Londongrad laundromat.
Corrupt Tories who cuddle with Russian oligarchs and take their money are a fundamental problem of Londongrad.
This is complete bs. The Tory government played into Putins hands in executing Brexit. Which was in Putins interest. Go read a book
We know now that the Torries were backed by Russian funds and have lied / are lying to their public
Ukraine is fighting for it's freedom period.
he is right there, our democracy is weak lately
Yes Hari, I am as concerned as you look.
Stanley talking about Putin, sounds like he is also talking about Trump and the Republican party.
THANK YOU Mehdi and Jason he is spot on!!!!
I would say that what the Usa have done is even worse than what Russia is dping. So not a false equivalence at all. A total equivalence i would say
I love seeing Christianne still doing news. Always the best!
Excellent interview. Makes some important points.
I can't take it. Stanley needs speech therapy - TODAY. People who "stutter" by repeating entire phrases are unqualified to speak in public. And like all Americans Stanley thinks that yelling louder covers up his errors.
Criminals ALWAYS have an excuse
He’s 100% correct.
I read your article and want to thank you, especially linking Russian ideology coined by Dugin with fascism.
This is so important to understand why this war against Ukraine was waged under those flags of the so called "de-nacification".
We are, as are they. Time is fleeting my friend's.
We broke our own rules when we conquered Hawaii, even by Resolution, in the 1890s and abolished their independence officially. It still illegally occupied to this day.
Excellent interview thank you.
thanks fot watching.
Hypocritical? Yep, we are that too often.
Weak? The inexorable march of democracy in the past 200 years around the world,
proves its strength and durability.
MrStanley one of a few reliable
sources of solid brain food,
these days. Share his wisdoms.
The opposite of hypocrisy and weakness is authoritarianism. Democracy is like science- the best, imperfect attempt at not being ruled from the top down. Freedom is messy. See Erich Fromm ‘Escape from Freedom’
Being hypocritical is not the same thing as being wrong.
Nor is it the same thing as being weak.
Spiritual balance is rare...these days..
I know i am privileged in that way..
i am always hopeful for God to do the unexpected and great things because that is his delight!
since when did the US export democracy?
We forgive our own war criminals by doing nothing about them. Americans want democracy, but often the American government removes itself from the rules of conscience when the requirements of democracy reach too far up the chain. Our elites enjoy extraordinary exemption.
You need to turn up your volume is too low.
He keeps saying democracies but he should be saying American democracy specifically.
America is not the only democracy. It’s not even the best democracy. Nor the first democracy. We’re an imperial democracy is about it. But that doesn’t mean we can’t rise to the challenge and redeem this sorry human world.
Emboldened by trump
Fascism is ALLWAYS about the dominance of either an ethnicity ore a religion.
Please remember this Jason Stanley !
I heard that statement ..I thought there were laws against HATE SPEECH . SO WHEN WILL THE LAW INFORCERS PUT THESE CRAZY PEOPLE OUT OF OFFICE ?
Laissez faire in démocratic countries has led to this....😡poo-tin certainly thought he had the right of way.there is other places as well(Myanmar etc)but this one is more up front because its so close to us😰
VERY SADLY…MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY
So how did that thought come to Putin? Looking at all going on in our country for a few years, can we in clean conscience say Putin is wrong? The answer hurts but it should work as a wake-up call for us.
“The enemy of my enemy is my friend” (for the time being…)
Gosh this was a bummer😔..🇺🇦❤️🌎✌🏼
This is the best liberal based channel .
Fear and paranoia is what this man's thoughts project...
Maybe if Mrs Ammanpour investigated and reported her findings on Mr Moshe Menuhin’s take on might and power she and the rest of us wouldn’t be so surprised.
I watched the Republican Party go south with REAGAN inviting the “moral majority” into that party. Christians awful hate and intolerance preached at fundamentalist evangelical Pentecostal church 8 days a week for my 76 years with loathing. The meanness and bigotry Jason Stanley surrounded with was sickening. Cured me of religious dogma altogether.
"Sinclair Lewis aptly predicted in 'It Can't Happen Here' that if fascism came to America it would come wrapped in the flag and whistling 'The Star Spangled Banner.'" - Harrison Evans Salisbury, 1971
