  • A pre-rut hunt in the Kaweka Range. Plan was to visit the 3 huts and cover some new ground.
    Weather was good, saw a few deer and captured some footage and pics. Some great country in there!
    Heard 3 territory calls but for the most part pretty quiet.
    Spent most of the time glassing the open stuff but managed to sneak in on a young fawn amongst the beech just off the track on the way out.

    Thanks for that little tour mate. Hoping to get in to Ballard with Chris Crosse next April. Never hunted sika, never hunted the roar, never hunted the Kawekas. Looking forward to it already. I have your cameras predecessor, the SX50. Bloody awesome little camera for the price. Do you use a tripod or monopod for your vids??

      No worries mate, glad you enjoyed it! Nice, if there is anything i can help out with, just ask. Yeh awesome camera mate, use a tripod for most of my filming.
      Cheers,
      Nik.

      newzealand gunsandhunting Yeah cheers. Watched a few more of your vids this morning. Really enjoyed them. Do you always hunt solo?? Not sure what the Ballard Hut block is like for the roar, not the best from what I gather but we'll have a better chance there than at home on the couch. My nephew and I are pretty green but we'll get the hang of it I'm sure. Just go quietly is my plan.... I live in the far north so don't get as many opportunities as I'd like, hell of a long drive to get into decent country. Well worth it though.

      Yeh mate, 90% of my hunting is solo.
      Probably as good as any other within that area mate. Below is a link to the online version of the article that goes with the video.

      newzealand gunsandhunting Thanks Nik, bloody good of you to offer. Any advice would be good so yeah, I'll drop you an email sometime soon. I'm away working in Antarctica until March so all I can do is dream of hunting and watch UA-cam until then, and our internet is crap so I have to get up at 4 or 5am when no one else on station is using it! I envy your ability to get into the bush so often. I'll be in touch.
      Cheers,Ev

    Nice video man. Did you shoot anything? What caliber is your 7mm killer?

    • @nikmaxwell
      @nikmaxwell  9 років тому +1

      Cheers mate!
      Nah, no shots fired. The rifle is an M98 actioned Husqvarna, was originally chambered in 8x57, put a 7x57 barrel on it a few years ago.
      Cheers,
      Nik.

      Hey Glenn,
      Pretty good, I thought that the battery had suffered from the cold on this trip as it showed low quite early on. However, once I took out the battery and put it back in, it showed its correct status again. Have had the same thing happen on my Canon SX280 HS.
      The SX60 is a very good camera mate, especially for under $500!
      Cheers,
      Nik.

      So I take it they are a rechargeable battery and if so how much do spare ones cost ? I currently use a video camera & carry an old still camera as well...want to have one camera for everything ( with my video camera I have 3 batteries and that can get me through a weeks hunting trip no problem) Your 60 power zoom is the bomb and the price is very good...I take it you can flick the screen around like a video camera when talking to one self ?? I appreciate your time as any information is helpful.

      @nikmaxwell  9 років тому

      Yep, rechargeable. Canon batteries are about $90 but you can get cheaper alternatives. I only have the one battery.
      That is how I used to roll too mate, hard to beat the quality of a DSLR but the SX60 does a very good job for the price and weight!
