Gosh... It's incredible how music evokes such powerful memories and feelings. When I was a little child, I can remember spending the day at my grandmother's house when unwell, and hearing this music. Hearing it again now brings back memories of her, the sofa, wall paper, the sound of her voice and smell of her home. She's been dead for over 20 years and her house no longer stands but hearing this again awakens some deep rooted memories of a time I'll never see again but shall always cherish. It's sad that some things are no more but lovely to remember it all. Thanks for posting this.
We did an experiment in science class where we all had to close our eyes and guess a minute. Everyone else did it by counting and most were about five seconds out. I got to within a second by playing this tune on my head.
The Just A Minute theme was such an infectious tune. Brought a tear to my eye hearing it again. Memories of happy primary school days in the 1980s. The girls devised a dance routine to it! Hideously cringeworthy but good fun.
I've been searching everywhere for this dam tune that's been re-occurring on a loop around and around in my head from childhood , thank you I can rest 😁
I had a similar experience with a bbc tune for one christmas, it went round my head for years, i eventually found it out it was the ident for bbc 1984, but I still dont know why that particular tune stuck in my head for 20 years.
I have such vivid memories of being at school, my whole class being brought to the TV room, and us all gleefully singing along to Just A Minute with a level of enthusiasm that was far greater than anything the actual programme got 😂
the joy of hearing the music, a break from jotters and bic pens, wheel in that beast of a tv, a science show about volume involving pouring liquid is about to begin
I remember getting excited when the twirling ITVs disbanded and the round ‘clock’ symbol came on. The music was more upbeat, and as the segments counted down you knew your programme was about to start.
I started school in autumn 1992 when this was still being used. I remember we used to watch a programme called Time For Maths and when this came on beforehand everyone used to clap along to the music
I had no idea this was used up to as late as 1993. I remember seeing this a lot when I was at primary school so it was definately around before 1988. Groundbreaking bit of CGI for that time!
I loved listening to this tune when I was repairing TVs and VCRs in the 80s. Of course the programmes were just as good. There was also good music with the test cards. Unfortunately the good times don't last for ever.
Loving this!!!!!!! The last song is called Just a Minute and was written by The Shadows Drummer Brian Bennet under the alias name James Aldenham. Reminds me of school in south Wales, everyone would be sitting down, then you'd get the clowns in the class who'd jump up and start dancing to it!
My word I'm glad to see this online! That music with the 60 second count down was legendary! Certainly makes me feel nostalgic about my childhood. Now I'm 28 I'm really starting to miss all that stuff lol.
Classic! I remember these. I was a child in the late 80s and early 90s so remember growing up with these. The 60 second countdown was SO memorable. I remember watching an old VHS in a Science lesson at school in 2001. That played, and the teacher wasnt paying attention so someone snuck up to the front and rewound the tape so we could watch it again!
I love these intro tunes to the UK school's TV programmes. The first one we hear is the later new theme from the 80s and it's fantastic but the second one we hear is from the 70s and that brings on the nostalgia for myself. I remember watching the seconds disappear on the clock on the screen in tandem with the music as the class sat in the general purpose room in anticipation of our favourite programme Look And Read and The Boy From Space. Great memories.
blimey, this takes me back to my very early school days - like Proust but without the soggy biscuit listening back to it, with much more experience as a musician, I now realise that each bar is exactly 2.5 seconds long, and the piece comprises six four-bar segments lasting ten seconds each, which makes it sync up to the visuals and is dead clever also, the guy who wrote the piece (Brian Bennett, a.k.a. James Aldenham) was once the drummer in the Shadows with Cliff Richard
Unusual for you to get to a video much later than you normally would after it first appeared on UA-cam and therefore not get hundreds of likes :D Seriously though keep up your good work :)
Channel 4 didn't have time to play The Journey tune in full as Business Daily would have started at 12 noon , So they had to sorten it to fit in between the last ITV Schools programme on 4 to the start of Channel 4 Business Daily at 12 noon.
@Concise... Gotta admit I'd love it if C4 showed this again sometime randomly out of the blue - even 2 or 3 times just to get the public curiosity going. These days there are tons of kids that are like wild animals. Hell, my generation wasn't perfect but we grew up on this stuff and we've not turned out nearly as bad as the current generation of youngsters!
@TheIdentCritic . Many thanks for your message. The part that I like is the tune "Just a minute," To me it is a supurb piece of music. Have a nice Xmas.
Can remember everyone in my class never shut up during this music so the teacher had to quieten them down! I always never liked that because I loved the music and couldnt hear it!
@dctim I used to love the roto music too! I think we werent allowed but still loved it! You can get the full music to both The Journey and Just a Minute on Sub TV! I put the Journey on my ipod and that was fab to listen to on atrain journeys , may put both tunes back!
itv schools on Channel 4 finished about 22 years ago when I was the age of 7 comming up for the age of 8 itv schools on Channel 4 finished in 1993 when I was the age of 7 comming up for the age of 8
Mr mark colpstein comments well i did like most of the itv interlude music used from the late 1960s and 1970s and early 1980s up to the Change over to channel4 in septenber1987
Why did they stop using it? It wasn't because they stopped using countdowns to the schools programmes. It was replaced with a boring still of the upcoming programme and numbers in the corner counting down.
I'd love it if Channel 4 just randomly put this on again, leaving everyone wondering, "Why the hell is there a gay 90s tune playing in this advert?!" (I actually really like that music - for shame.)

I can totally relate ...I could go on

genius
That’s awesome!
wheeling out the old wooden tv into the classroom good times! the soundtrack to a generation
The Just A Minute theme was such an infectious tune. Brought a tear to my eye hearing it again. Memories of happy primary school days in the 1980s. The girls devised a dance routine to it! Hideously cringeworthy but good fun.
Love this music man!!! Makes me sad everyday thinking how good my childhood was and we can't go back!!!!!! 😭
I couldn't agree more!
its funny how things like this stick in your head, sitting in class waiting for the clock to count down. I have the same feeling!
Yip school 1980s best
Even to go back just as an observer, so that you could see your happy little self enjoying a childhood that you loved and cherished.
@@theveluxhorse1120 at least you can observe in memory
Bought me to tears this....memories 😭 Nowadays life is hell.
To be 10 years old again. The teacher wheeling in the TV. Oh to be 10 years old again.
Don't worry, your not the only one that thinks that.
Believe me.
The soundtrack to a sick day... this music is engrained into my very soul!

Phew, I thought I was the only one!

Glad I wasn't the only one !
My brother and I still reference this but never knew what it was called
im glad i wasn't the only one. ive been searching this for years.

The class knew when we heard this music, the teacher needed a break from our shit
Classic memes
The moment my generation's childhoods ended.

Ah the jingle with the circle logo......... good childhood memories..........

From about 58 seconds in was my all time favourite memories of being a child! The best part of school hands down!
House and Garage and or Drum and Bass remixes much required of this legend
Oh the memories of primary school!!! :-D

Classic! "The Journey" and "Just a Minute" , Two great tunes from childhood , which are sorely missed! And the rotating ITV sign!
This music is nectar for my soul...

Brings back memories of friends who are gone

Yes Fab Tune...Such Memories...
Pure nostalgia takes me back to being sat on the floor of my School hall at Petts Wood South London

I love the second one the best. But love both.

i love the way the roto to the clock switch is so over the top dramatic. Stuff on telly now is so dull.....!
I miss these songs so much.
In the Assembly hall, on the Old Tall Television, Late 80's memory. Look & Read, Starting Out, How We Used To Live. .....
I Hate Getting Older 😂
I pity the two people who disliked this
Thanks very much indeed for uploading this - the music had been lost in my memory until now!

Hi Larry! I love your Retro Gaming Corner! I frequent it often… 😃👍
They should have at least played 'The Journey' in full for the last roto. An amazing tune.

why does it make me a bit sad seeing this again?
The past is a foreign country... and our visas have all been cancelled :(
Because we are all getting older and there's nothing we can do about it!😭
Nostalgia. It's bittersweet.
Am I the only one who was absolutely terrified by this? The music put dread in me.
@Concise...

Forced to watch this whenever I was suspended from school...
Love the wee tune
I remember this countdown on ITV Schools when I was at school nearly 30 years ago.
Takes me back to day off school.
🤯 I had no idea this was in stereo
School TV didn't have stereo speakers
Thank you for this.
We would beg the teacher to let the music play. And she would, bc I reckon she appreciated a cast iron banger as much as anyone.
Such a strangely affecting tune.
When the teacher wheeled the TV into class & we'd retune it to watch Neighbours when they left the room 😂
The sound of wagging it.
We had it so good back then
NOSTALGIA❗️❗️❗️😁😁😁

Do you know, which schools broadcasting was more popular, from BBC or from ITV?
Petr Pechacek
In my schools atleast, it was almost entirely BBC recordings. Though we are talking from around 1994 onwards when I was schooled.
+Katie Fraser Yup was the same in my class. Did you get the another class of your year coming into your classroom to watch it too?
@dctim I used to love the roto music too! I think we werent allowed but still loved it! You can get the full music to both The Journey and Just a Minute on Sub TV! I put the Journey on my ipod and that was fab to listen to on atrain journeys , may put both tunes back!

I MEMEBER
Reckon we'll see these making a comeback this month?
What computers and software did they use to create this? I remember it from the time, at primary school.
Has anyone else notice its the full min countdown, did there not cut it back to 40sec by this stage?
The first clock of the day was cut to 40 seconds from the start of Spring Term 1993. Every other clock ran for the full minute.
Why dont they go back to doing this? The viewing figures are so low now theyd probably go up
Dis remind me of da big tv at Skool ent it,
Mr mark colpstein comments well i did like most of the itv interlude music used from the late 1960s and 1970s and early 1980s up to the Change over to channel4 in septenber1987
Why did this presentation "end" on a Monday? Surely a Friday would have been the most likely day of the week!
Why did they stop using it? It wasn't because they stopped using countdowns to the schools programmes. It was replaced with a boring still of the upcoming programme and numbers in the corner counting down.
Things just go in cycles in TV presentation. They're always having a "cleanout" every now and then.
@80sandretrogubbins25 if the Internet had been what it is today, they would have been inundated with complaints for dropping it
is there any that ISN'T from ITV schools?
They could've updated it in 1989-90 (with the new ITV logo), but no...
This is Ecstasy 😁
Hi actually donevthe music to all these ???
THIS! What's it called and who is it by please?
James Aldenham aka (Brian Bennett), “The Journey”, and “Just a Minute”. Found them myself and now I own them both.
I guess this is from 1993
I'd love it if Channel 4 just randomly put this on again, leaving everyone wondering, "Why the hell is there a gay 90s tune playing in this advert?!" (I actually really like that music - for shame.)
Wasn't it 1993 the last time this was on?
yes it was
